You know, rereading through some of Fortov's scenes and his characterization, what if he had ADHD?

This may be a bit of a stretch, but just the way that Zorian tells Fortov that "you're smart, you're just lazy," reminds me of how friends with ADHD were treated in schools. Teachers and parents would see what they could do when they were hyperfocusing and ask "why can't you do that all the time?" I don't think Fortov is notably smart or dumb, he just has some internal difficulties that happen to sometimes be beneficial and that others don't recognize. I wonder how the Kazinski family would react if he could prove it.

OK this right here was a moment Ilsa lost me, I hate, hate I tell you, when a child (he is fifteen, it counts) tells you something is bothering them, they have a problem with something you listen. Even if he didn't have empathy headache and it was just some plain old social anxiety this approach vexes me so much! I get headaches too blah blah blah. Her getting Akoja to go with him, is problematic at best. I know she has a crush, but still if he says he doesn't want a day why force him?

Aah fortov comes on the scene. I am kind of curious how that really went down, you know the whole purple creeper patch thing. But we are about to see Kael, our first time loop ally.

This chapter does a good job of setting up some things for later and how Zorian feels about his place in society and the greater world, as in he does not want the world to care about him at all.

Do you ever think about how Zorian opened himself up to his sisters situation and took Kirelle with him to Cyoria to live together, got over his grudges and started working together with Daimen, but he never bothered with Fortov. He didn't even try. He didn't even care. And when Daimen admonished him about it all he said was "Why should I of?" Or "I didn't need him, he wasn't useful to me, so I didn't need to" like damn. I've been thinking about what Zorian's relationship with his family post time loops would be like and if they could, not solved but like, be better.

Damien and Kirielle, they're working on it. I imagine once Zorian doesn't have to deal with his parents authority and they realize they don't have direct control over him anymore they'll mellow out a little. But I'm struggling to imagine how Zorian would reconnect with Fortov, if ever.

He seems fully uninterested in reaching out to Fortov as Zorian keeps on having to clean up after his messes. So Fortov won't be able to connect to Zorian with a needed favor from him and Fortov probably can't help Zorian with anything directly so there's few ways he could reduce Zorian's resentment. But Fortov could make up for Kirielle. I imagine Kirielle could need some social or life advice that Damien and Zorian would never understand so she's forced to reach out to Fortov. Or perhaps when Fortov gets shot down by Zorian to help him Fortov notices Kirielle needs something and realizes Zorian might forgive him if he helps Kirielle with how much he loves her. And then Fortov is stuck in a family comedy movie trying to make up to his little sister he terrorized as a child.

To add to the dynamic maybe Fortov has "settled down" from his playboy years and is desperate to make sure his partner has a good impression of him.

Daimen noting that to Zorian post loop their parents are practically strangers to him and being concerned is so funny to me. Like imagine you find out your brother is actually 25 (if we count the blackrooms) but he only spoke to his (your) parents a number of times that you can literally count on one hand during the time loop that he has been stuck in for a decade. And he literally looks bored and like he doesn't want to be there when your parents arrive in Cyoria. Not to mention Zorian looks ready to immediately make an enemy out of the whole family just to protect Kirelle.

Also Fortov actively disliking Daimen but still bothering Zorian from time to time when Zorian literally gives 0 shits about him but Daimen does is crazy. Obviously he isn't completely aware of this dynamic but still.

You know, as set in stone as a spell forger/researcher Zorian is, I think in another life or timeline he could have just as easily become a detective.

An empath that is naturally curious about the world and might look for divination help and be pointed to a detective? I don't think Zorian would join the police force but he in one way or another respects Haslush, and might find his skills fit the field. After all, as a freelance detective/P.I. it would give him the career path of his two favorite activities of "stick my nose into other people's business" and "help my friends."
