Jo Ann Gibson Robinson ,unsung activist (April 17, 1912 – August 29, 1992) was a civil rights activist and educator in Montgomery, Alabama.Known for initiating the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, AL, USA
Born near Culloden, Georgia, she was the youngest of twelve children. She attended Fort Valley State College and then became a public school teacher in Macon, where she was married to Wilbur Robinson for a short time. Five years later, she went to Atlanta, where she earned an M.A. in English at Atlanta University. After teaching in Texas she then accepted a position at Alabama State College in Montgomery. It was there she joined the Women's Political Council, which Mary Fair Burks had founded three years earlier. In 1949, Robinson was verbally attacked by a bus driver for sitting in the front "Whites only" section of the bus. Her response to the incident was to attempt to start a protest boycott. But, when she approached her fellow members of the Woman’s Political Council with her story and proposal, she was told that it was “a fact of life in Montgomery.” In late 1950, she succeeded Burks as president of the WPC and helped focus the group's efforts on bus abuses. Robinson was an outspoken critic of the treatment of African-Americans on public transportation. She was also active in the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
The Women's Political Council had made complaints about the bus seating to the Montgomery City Commission and about abusive drivers, and achieved some concessions, including an undertaking that drivers would be courteous and having buses stopping at every corner in black neighborhoods, as they did in European areas. After Brown vs. Board of Education, Robinson had informed the mayor of the city that a boycott would come and then after Rosa Parks arrest, they seized the moment to plan the boycott of the buses in Montgomery.
On Thursday, December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to move from her seat in the African area of the bus she was travelling on to make way for a white passenger who was standing. Mrs. Parks, a civil rights organizer, had intended to instigate a reaction from white citizens and authorities. That night, with Mrs. Parks permission, Mrs. Robinson stayed up mimeographing 52,500 handbills calling for a boycott of the Montgomery bus system. The boycott was initially planned to be for just the following Monday. She passed out the leaflets at a Friday afternoon meeting of AME Zionist clergy among other places and Reverend L. Roy Bennett requested other ministers attend a meeting that Friday night and to urge their congregations to take part in the boycott. Robinson, Reverend Ralph David Abernathy, two of her senior students and other Women's Council members then passed out the handbills to high school students leaving school that afternoon. After the success of the one-day boycott, African citizens decided to continue the boycott and established the Montgomery Improvement Association to focus their efforts. The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was elected president. Jo Ann Robinson became a member of this group. She had denied an official position to the Montgomery Improvement Association because of her teaching position at Alabama State. She served on its executive board and edited their newsletter. In order to protect her position at Alabama State College and to protect her colleagues, Robinson purposely stayed out of the limelight even though she worked diligently with the MIA. Robinson and other WPC members also helped sustain the boycott by providing transportation for boy-cotters.
Robinson was the target of several acts of intimidation. In February 1956, a local police officer threw a stone through the window of her house. Then two weeks later, another police officer poured acid on her car. Then the governor of Alabama ordered the state police to guard the houses of the boycott leaders. The boycott lasted over a year because the bus company would not give in to the demands of the protesters. After a student sit-in in early 1960, Robinson and other teachers that had supported the students, resigned their positions at Alabama State College. Robinson left Alabama State College and moved out of Montgomery that year. She taught at Grambling College in Louisiana for one year and then moved to Los Angeles and taught English in the public school system. In Los Angeles she continued to be active in local women's organizations. She taught in the LA schools until she retired from teaching in 1976. Jo Ann Robinson was also a part of the bus boycott and was strongly against discrimination.

A list of indie games that take you to weird places with weird vibes.
My favorite genre of video game, go to a weird place and meet other weird people while you explore the weird little world and learn about the meaning of life.
Truberbrook

A sci-fi set in 1960s Germany. Quantum physicist, Hans Tannhauser wins a lottery he quite determinedly, did not enter, to visit the tiny, strange, remote and rather dead town of Trüberbrook. On your first night you have your research papers stolen, meet a woman who insists on you going up the mountain with her, and get far more than you bargained for in terms of multidimensional, universe warping nonsense.

Mae, and anthropomorphic cat, drops out of college to come back to live with her parents in her dying home town in the American rust belt, for reasons she refuses to explain. Here she discovers that not only has the town moved on from where it was when she was younger, but the people have too, and she's forced to battle with this as well as supernatural dreams about instrument players, and a town full of a range of weird people that feels just as alive as she does and have their own stories and lives.

After the world was threatened by a substance called 'miasma', the lasting human population hides in cities that offer some form of protection. Your main character finds himself a miner in a controlling and subterranean town, knowing nothing of the outside until he finds a mysterious girl and takes her in. You go from being the best, frying pan wielding miner, to getting kicked out of the town into the wider, post apocalyptic world, exploring the weird settlements of the outside and making friends with equally weird acquaintances.

A group of 5 teenagers take the last boat out to an old military fort for an overnight party on the beach. There are legends about the island, that sometimes you can pick up frequencies to radio stations that don't exist, and that is how you unwittingly open a ghostly rift tied to the islands past, your friends start disappearing, and you need to solve whats going on by exploring the island, and the frequencies in the old military tech that haunt it.

You're a cop, or rather the closest this unpoliced area of revachol can call a cop. You're drunken, and a drug addict, and a body has been hung on a tree outside for the past week, threatening to start a civil war between corporate and unions and minor militias for the past week, beginning to rot. As a husk of your past, apparently accomplished self (though you cant remember that, you cant even currently remember your own name after the bender you went on) you need to try and solve the mystery, alongside your partner Kim. Along the way you can also decide to join a union, or a bootlicker, a drug addict, or wear some very questionable clothing while telling a woman her husband died, all while being fully narrated to by 24 weirdly talkative voices in your head.
Everybodys gone to the rapture

This is a town with no people, just an empty place with the stories of those that were. In the shopshire countryside a town exists where everyone has disappeared, only bright orbs to lead you around the valley, listening to telephones, radios and recordings, as well as the lights themselves morphing into their human counterparts, to show the past events that led to everyone disappearance, symptoms of illness, before eventually fading, unexplainably, into lights, an infection created by a none human entity, a 'pattern', which can travel from human to human. A look at the tangled lives of humans in the town, and eventually how they reacted to their quarantine and those around them vanishing.

On this day, 8 July 1763, General Jeffery Amherst, commander of British forces in North America, wrote to one of his colonels asking: "Could it not be contrived to send the small pox among the disaffected tribes of Indians? We must on this occasion use every stratagem in our power to reduce them." The following week he wrote that his subordinate should "try every other method that can serve to extirpate this execrable race." Amherst was reeling from the loss of three forts to Native American fighters in the conflict know as Pontiac's war. Unbeknownst to him, blankets tainted with smallpox had already been given to Indigenous leaders by British forces. A smallpox epidemic subsequently broke out which devastated tribes in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions over the coming months, although a direct causal link with the blankets cannot be established. The Massachusetts town, Amherst, and its college and university, are still named after the genocidal official. Spy Satellite Photos Reveal Hundreds of Long-Lost Roman Forts
Declassified photos captured by United States spy satellites launched during the Cold War have revealed an archaeological treasure trove: hundreds of previously unknown Roman-era forts, in what is now Iraq and Syria.
Many of those long-lost structures may be gone forever at this point, destroyed or damaged over recent decades due to agricultural expansion, urban development and war. Nevertheless, the discovery of the forts’ existence challenges a popular hypothesis established in the 1930s about the role of such fortifications along the ancient Roman Empire’s eastern border, researchers reported Wednesday in the journal Antiquity.
Based on the satellite views, the high number of forts and their widespread distribution hints that the forts may not have been erected to keep enemies out, as the decades-old theory suggested. Rather, the structures were likely built to ensure safe passage for caravans and travelers along routes that saw plenty of nonmilitary traffic. These forts, according to the study authors, were outposts and havens, not hostile barriers.
High-resolution images analyzed in the new study were taken during flyovers by multiple satellites belonging to two US military programs: the Corona Project (1960 to 1972) and Hexagon (1971 to 1986). Corona’s images were declassified in 1995, and Hexagon’s photos were released to the public in 2011.
Images from Hexagon and Corona are invaluable for archaeologists because they preserve snapshots of landscapes that have since undergone significant disruption, said lead study author Jesse Casana, an archaeologist and professor in the department of anthropology at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
“Agriculture and urbanization have destroyed a lot of archaeological sites and features to a shocking degree,” Casana said. “This old imagery allows us to see things that are often either obscured or no longer extant today.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spy satellite photos vs. the Poidebard survey
Satellite images are especially helpful for searches across the northern part of the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East — from the eastern coast of the Mediterranean to western Iran — because of the area’s archaeological importance and high visibility of the ground in photos, Casana added.
The research team pored over the images for signs of Roman forts, which have a distinctive square shape and walls that usually measure about 164 to 262 feet (50 to 80 meters) long. The scientists began their search using reference maps from an aerial survey of the region conducted in the 1920s and 1930s by French archaeologist and Jesuit missionary Father Antoine Poidebard. That survey was among the first to photograph archaeological sites from the air, and in 1934 Poidebard reported finding 116 Roman forts.
It was an unprecedented achievement. But nearly a century later, mapping Poidebard’s forts to satellite photos was challenging. Because his map wasn’t large-scale, it contained numerous spatial errors, Casana said. Poidebard also did not provide names or numbers for most of the forts he found, identifying them instead by their proximity to geologic features.
Those forts were aligned north to south along what was once the easternmost boundary of the Roman Empire, according to Poidebard. This arrangement, he claimed, was surely intended to guard against invaders from the east.
But Poidebard’s survey provided only a partial view of Rome’s ancient infrastructure, the researchers found. What he overlooked — and what the satellite photos revealed — was that the north-to-south line of 116 forts was actually only a narrow sliver of a cluster spreading from east to west and containing 396 fortified structures.
The forts spanned approximately 116,000 square miles (300,000 square kilometers), “extending from Mosul, on the Tigris River in Iraq, through Ninawa province, across the Khabur and the Balikh valleys, continuing to the semi-arid plains west of the Euphrates River, leading to western Syria and the Mediterranean,” according to the study.
Tumblr media
Oases of safety for ancient Rome
When the archaeologists performed a second survey of an image subset, they found 106 more fortlike structures, hinting that further investigations will yield many more Roman forts. Based on excavations of other Roman sites in the region, the scientists estimated that the forts were built between the second and sixth centuries.
While Poidebard’s row of forts along the Roman Empire’s eastern front looked like a military fortification, this new evidence suggested that the forts collectively served a different purpose. Rather than presenting an impassable wall on a violent frontier, they provided oases of safety and order along well-traveled Roman roads.
Borders in this world “were places of dynamic cultural exchange and movement of goods and ideas,” not barriers, Casana said. And perhaps that perspective holds a lesson for the modern era, he added.
“Historically, as an archaeologist, I can say that there have been many attempts by ancient states to build walls across borders and it has been a universal failure,” Casana said. “If there’s any way that archaeology contributes to modern discourse, I would hope it is that building giant walls to keep people out is a bad plan.”

Jo Ann Gibson Robinson (April 17, 1912 – August 29, 1992) was an activist during the Civil Rights Movement and educator in Montgomery, Alabama.
She became the first person in her family to graduate from college, attending Fort Valley State College.
She continued her education after earning her MA at Columbia University and continued to study English. She went to teach at Mary Allen College. She accepted a position at Alabama State College in Montgomery.
In 1949 she was verbally attacked by a bus driver for sitting in the front “Whites only” section of the bus. The whites-only section was empty. Out of fear that the incident would escalate and that the driver would go from verbal abuse to physical, she left the bus. Her response to the incident was to attempt to start a protest boycott against bus segregation in Alabama. She approached fellow Women’s Political Council members with her story and proposal, she was told that it was “a fact of life in Montgomery.” She succeeded Burks as president of the WPC and helped focus the group’s efforts on bus abuses. She met with the mayor of Montgomery at the time, W. A. Gayle William A. Gayle. She met with City Hall’s council, but they were not interested in what she had to say. When City Hall’s leaders were no help, she took matters into her own hands and organized a boycott. She was an outspoken critic of the treatment of African Americans on public transportation. She was active in the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
The WPC made complaints about the bus seating to the Montgomery City Commission and abusive drivers and achieved some concessions, including an undertaking that drivers would be courteous, and having buses stop at every corner in African American neighborhoods as they did in white areas.
After Brown vs. Board of Education (1954), she informed the mayor of the city that a boycott would come. After Rosa Parks’ arrest, they seized the moment to plan the Montgomery bus boycott. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

maggie alexander || headcanons
Tumblr media
tw: substance abuse mentions. underage drinking.
maggie's place is covered in houseplants. at one point one might say she considered her plants more her children than her actual ones. she might even hesitate when bringing that accusation to her, but only because she's always good with plants, she just knew how to take care of them. her kids? not so much.
about two years after the divorce, maggie and matthew made the decision that the kids should live with him for a while. he had a good, steady job, a nice place, a schedule. for all intents and purposes, he was finally a fully functioning human being and maggie...she was working on her master's, teaching, parenting and having 'fun'. it was impossible to balance it all and it constantly teetered too much. she wasn't sleeping, she made have had some issues with adderall usage as well. it got to be too much and though it hurt her to do it...she knew it'd be better for the kids. at least until she figured shit out.
she smokes at night when she can't sleep. she'll walk as she does. which, she knows doesn't help her insomnia in the slightest. it's just...something to do or more so a force of habit.
she was terrified of being a shitty mom which turned out to be a self fulfilling prophecy in her book. and yeah, likely her kids' too.
as they were growing up though, she did her best to make her home a safe place for them and for any other wayward teens. she offered her couch as a place to sober up or sleep over on. let them know if they were ever in a tricky or scary situation they could call her, no questions asked. always had some sort of food stocked in the fridge and condoms available. did she encourage said behaviors? no-- it wasn't like she was throwing ragers or anything. she was firmly of the stance that teens were going to push limits and engage in risky behavior. and that she was going to try and make sure her kids and their friends knew that no matter what, they had someone in the could count on to be there even when they messed up.
it didn't always translate well or turn out well either. there were times she was taken advantage of, had things stolen or pissed people off. there were a few times she had to call parents or lay down consequences after the fact for her own kids but she still saw it as worth it.
she loves dancing, to anything really. she can waltz and tango.
she's surprisingly good at darts.
cooking is another forte of hers. even though she didn't always have the kids, she that 'mom' that got used to making big portions. so what she doesn't eat, she'll box up for friends or take it to the local shelter.
she prefers black coffee but her not so secret guilty pleasure is hot chocolate. she has a myriad of flavors and when she's having a rough day, that's her go to. and you know, she may add some bailey's to it every now and then.
she plays video games with some of her patients, cozy ones like stardew valley where they can play and talk at the same time.
she's on tiktok and will occasionally drop little nuggets of wisdom, but its mostly videos of her derp of a cat or her cooking/recipes and plants.
she loves rainy days. thunderstorms especially. there have been times she's cleared her schedule just to sit and read and listen to it fall.
she enjoys photography and has a few of her photos she's taken framed and hung in her office.
she's in a bowling league.
she smokes more than tobacco on occasion. those nights she loves to put on a vinyl, have a bath and relax.
will still play drinking games and is a bit of a card shark.
says 'fuck' a lot.
Speaks Spanish relatively well thanks to a few college courses and an old flame.
is a romantic at heart but aside from matthew has never really been in love. which...she knows she loved him and still does dearly. but she's never been sure if she was 'in' love with him.
there are some women though...she's seen potential. she just-- has never taken the time to really explore it.
she will indulge in a date or two every now and then. she enjoys planning them as well as being planned for.
she usually falls into a situationship though. ones that enviably die out due to her schedule/need for independence or things just fizzling.
she loves crystals, astrology and spiritual things. her office is full of plants, crystals, fidgets, a bean bag. it's as cozy and as relaxing as she could get it. she even has therapy animals come in sometimes, her favorite being a goat named Kitt.
she has two tattoos.
- more to come-

✦ last line / wip day
tagged by the lovely @nuclearstorms, thank you bones!!!! so i decided to go about this a little bit differently because i have not written anything in the past year or so, and as such, i genuinely have no last lines or wips to share sooooo i am instead gonna take the wip day prompt and use it to showcase some new ocs i made 💓
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
thanks to state of decay 2 community creation, they give you completely generated characters to start your community with and they all come with built in stats and traits and names so it makes fleshing out characters fairly easy!!! this is my new community i started a few days ago called "the ones left behind" (the communities are all given names too which is fun!)
so from left to right we have sergio "checo" may, farooq "brain cleaner" tarabey, and ángel "cupido" fuentes!!! they are currently residing in trumbull valley in a small military fort at the edge of the map.
sergio
23
bisexual
santa maya resident
college student before the outbreak (he was studying environmental sciences)
absolutely adores gardening shows and thus gains a morale boost if the base has a garden and he has the gardening skill!
tells bad jokes and is often the target of conflicts in the community (this gives the community a -3 morale 😭)
but he laughs easily which gives the community +4 morale boost so he makes up for it KDKLFJDS
him and farooq get into arguments a lot during the early days because of low resources and close quarters :/
farooq
38
gay
old sequelones resident
psychiatrist before the outbreak
leader of the community!
one cute trait he has is the "kind eyes" trait so i like to imagine he can just stare at people if they are overwhelmed or stressed out and it will help them center themselves (he definitely used this a lot during his psychiatrist days) which comes in handy with the world they are living in now (this gives him a 25% standing reward boost which helps towards how he is viewed by the group!)
he also has the medicine skill so i figure he probably gained a knowledge of first aid while in college because a close friend of his was studying to become a nurse. so he has basically taken on the role of doctor, nurse, pathologist, phlebotomist, and psychiatrist for the community 😭
he got the nickname "brain cleaner" not because of his penchant for knocking zombies heads off, but from college when he was the main person ppl came to to talk about their problems with and left their brains feeling "clean" after... dumb nickname, he knows :/
ángel
18
bisexual
turtle ridge resident
high school graduate (he played for his high school's basketball team)
during high school and the summer breaks, when he was free from sports and school, he was a dog walker for the rich residents of turtle ridge and nearby neighborhoods of whitney junction and squelones so he made BANK because he liked upcharge them DFJLSJD he also likes to brag that he could walk 10 dogs on one leash but never seems to tell the full story where they fully dragged him down the sidewalk and also dislocated his shoulder :/
a major basketball fan, he even thought about going to college on a scholarship since he was one of the best players in his high school's league! he misses the sounds of the court so much :(
he has the sports trivia skill which always comes in handy when doing their weekly game nights when they get to trivia time!!
got the nickname "cupido" because he was essentially the matchmaker at his high school???? he doesn't know how but every time someone asked to be introduced to a friend of his, that couple stayed together for at least 2 years and more. so people just took to calling him cupido because of his matchmaking abilities SLKFSLJDK
so that's my wip prompt fill and my little introduction to my new sod2 community!!!!! feel free to ask any questions abt them because i love them so much 🫶
tagging - whoever that wants to do this!!!

No page break used… that’s the point. This isn’t even every school. It doesn’t take into account grocery stores, movie theaters, workplaces, public parks, malls, hair salons, bowling alleys, concerts, dance halls, nightclubs, yoga studios, places of worship, fucking “Independence” Day parades…. The list is endless. We are a sad, inept, violent nation incapable and unwilling to protect even our most vulnerable citizens.
Takes a long time to scroll thru the list and unless laws are changed, the list will get longer.

Welcome to the United States of America, where the right to own killing machines matters more than the lives of our children.

Sunrise trek to Konkan Kada at Harishchandragad
6-7 January 2024 - with a trekking group - embarked on a night trek to reach the top at sunrise. 2024 begins with a bang.
Tumblr media
TIME FRAME:
Saturday night: Second last train from Dadar. Sunday night: Alight at Kasara. Shared non-AC jeep journey from Kasara to Pachnai (base village) from 2 am to 4:30 am. Sunday morning: 5 am trek starts 7 am reach Harishchandragad top, where Taramati blocks the East. Sightseeing of the fort till 10:30 after breakfast of tea and poha. 11 am to 2 pm return trek. 2:30 to 4:30 pm return travel in jeep to Kasara. 5:15 pm to 8pm return journey to reach home. EXPENSES: 1000/- per head with a trekking group, that included travel expenses from Dadar to Kasara and back, with breakfast of tea and poha.
EXPERIENCE in photos and a few words:
The build up to sunrise was a beautiful experience. The waning crescent moon and the Venus were getting ready for the conjunction on 9th January 2024.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The east of Harishchandragad top is blocked by the third highest peak of Maharashtra, Taramati.
Tumblr media
The hidden sunrise: Sunrise happened behind this mountain's massif and to witness the sun rise from Harishchandragad, one has to climb Taramati peak.
Check more photos of the sunrise at Harishchandragad here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The map of Harishchandragad & the ancient script decoded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For more photos of the Harishchandreshwar Temple atop Harishchandragad and the sculptures, please check here.
Tumblr media
On the left of this temple in the east direction is a reservoir by the names, PUSHKARNI KUND, whose photo is added below.

Tumblr media
KOKANKADA कोकणकडा :
The famous overhanging cliff, whose view sends chill down the spine and is extremely beautiful was visited. Please check the above hyperlinked text for more photos here.
Tumblr media
Nalli-chi vaat (नळीची वाट) is a thrilling adventurous rock climbing ascent to Harishchandragad from the valley below, that is visible from this cliff here.
Tumblr media
Enjoying the view from Kokankada.
Tumblr media
I saw a lot of flowers while trekking here. The Karvi, which blossoms once in 7 years has started blooming.
Tumblr media
I saw the plant that resembles the bed of arrows, upon whom Bhishma Pitamah, was laid by Arjun the great archer, at Kurukshetra in Mahabharata. The genus is Bridelia. Species is unkown to the friend who identified and told the above story. DrSR is a PhD Botany & an assistant professor in college. The plant is known commonly as BHISHMA-SAN (seat of BHeeshma Pitamah).
Tumblr media
The above video is a demostration of why this tiny pretty flower is known as LADY'S PURSE. Just like a woman's purse hides its content from the prying eyes, same way the petal hides the anther and is visible by prying the petal delicately.
Overall, a good start to 2024.
P.S. There are many links to photos of different places at Harishchandragad. Hope you check them all. There is not enough space in one blog post.
