Science Says the Most Successful Kids Have Parents Who Do These 9 Things
Chances are, there’s something on this list you're missing.
Inc. | Christina DesMarais
Much has been written about the attributes of high-achieving adults, and what makes them different from everyone else. But if you're a parent, a more compelling question may be: "What can I do to make sure my kids succeed in life?" Here's what researchers say.
1. Don't tell them they can be anything they want.
According a survey of 400 teenagers, conducted by market research agency C+R Research, young Americans aren't interested in doing the work that will need to be done in the years to come. Instead, they aspire to be musicians, athletes, or video game designers, even though these kinds of jobs only comprise 1 percent of American occupations. In reality, jobs in health care or in construction trades will be golden in future decades. Why not steer them into well-paying professions in which there will be a huge shortage of workers?
2. Eat dinner as a family.
According to a nonprofit organization operating out of Harvard University, kids who eat with their families roughly five days a week exhibit lower levels of substance abuse, teen pregnancy, obesity, and depression. They also have higher grade-point averages, better vocabularies, and more self-esteem.
3. Enforce no-screen time.
Researchers have found that the brains of little kids can be permanently altered when they spend too much time using tablets and smartphones. Specifically, the development of certain abilities is impeded, including focus and attention, vocabulary, and social skills. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says children younger than 18 months should have no screen time at all, other than video-chatting. For kids ages two to five, it recommends limiting screen time to one hour a day. For older kids, it's a matter of making sure media doesn't take the place of adequate sleep, exercise, and social interaction. The AAP also says parents should make the dinner table, the car, and bedrooms media-free zones.
4. Work outside the home.
There are certainly familial benefits to having a stay-at-home mother, but researchers at Harvard Business School have found that when moms work outside the home, their daughters are more likely to be employed themselves, hold supervisory roles, and make more money than peers whose mothers did not have careers.
5. Make them work.
In a 2015 TED Talk, Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult and the former dean of freshman at Stanford University, cites the Harvard Grant Study, which found that the participants who achieved the greatest professional success did chores as a child.
6. Delay gratification.
The classic Marshmallow Experiment of 1972 involved placing a marshmallow in front of a young child, with the promise of a second marshmallow if he or she could refrain from eating the squishy blob while a researcher stepped out of the room for 15 minutes. Follow-up studies over the next 40 years found that the children who were able to resist the temptation to eat the marshmallow grew up to be people with better social skills, higher test scores, and a lower incidence of substance abuse. They also turned out to be less obese and better able to deal with stress. To help kids build this skill, train them to have habits that must be accomplished every day—even when they don't feel like doing them.
"Top performers in every field—athletes, musicians, CEOs, artists—are all more consistent than their peers," writes James Clear, an author and speaker who studies the habits of successful people. "They show up and deliver day after day while everyone else gets bogged down with the urgencies of daily life and fights a constant battle between procrastination and motivation."
7. Read to them.
Researchers at the New York University School of Medicine have found that babies whose parents read to them have better language, literacy, and early reading skills four years later before starting elementary school. And kids who like books when they're little grow into people who read for fun later on, which has its own set of benefits. That's according to Dr. Alice Sullivan, who uses the British Cohort Study to track various aspects of 17,000 people in the U.K. "We compared children from the same social backgrounds who achieved similar tested abilities at ages five and 10, and discovered that those who frequently read books at age 10 and more than once a week when they were 16 had higher test results than those who read less," she writes for The Guardian. "In other words, reading for pleasure was linked to greater intellectual progress, in vocabulary, spelling, and mathematics."
8. Encourage them to travel.
The Student and Youth Travel Association (SYTA) surveyed 1,432 U.S. teachers who credit international travel, in particular, with affecting students in a myriad of good ways:
Desire to travel more (76%)
Increased tolerance of other cultures and ethnicities (74%)
Increased willingness to know/learn/explore (73%)
Increased willingness to try different foods (70%)
Increased independence, self-esteem, and confidence (69%)
More intellectual curiosity (69%)
Increased tolerance and respectfulness (66%)
Better adaptability and sensitivity (66%)
Being more outgoing (51%)
Better self-expression (51%)
Increased attractiveness to college admissions (42%)
If sending your son or daughter abroad or bringing them with you overseas isn't feasible, take heart. The survey also asked teachers about domestic travel and found similar benefits for students.
9. Let them fail.
While it may seem counterintuitive, it's one of the best things a parent can do. According to Dr. Stephanie O'Leary, a clinical psychologist specializing in neuropsychology and author of Parenting in the Real World: The Rules Have Changed, failure is good for kids on several levels. First, experiencing failure helps your child learn to cope, a skill that's certainly needed in the real world. It also provides him or her with the life experience needed to relate to peers in a genuine way. Being challenged also instills the need for hard work and sustained efforts, and also demonstrates that these traits are valuable even without the blue ribbon, gold star, or top score. Over time, children who have experienced defeat will build resilience and be more willing to attempt difficult tasks and activities because they are not afraid to fail. And, she says, rescuing your child sends the message that you don't trust him or her. "Your willingness to see your child struggle communicates that you believe they are capable and that they can handle any outcome, even a negative one," she says.

I bet you are really anxious and i am sorry you feel that way. But i do not think that the therapist would risk his license on an affair. It is the biggest mistake you can do as a psychologist. You can then sit up with the bar across your lap. Once you caught your breath, you can stand and set down the bar, or take it wherever you want to park it. I hate having it across my thighs while I recover, so I set it on the floor. I live in the Midwest (Experiences will vary a bit across the US). I am in college now but I learned some cursive in the first grade of elementary school, however I failed cursive class. I was not abnormal either, MOST kids did poorly in cursive class and there was 충청북도출장샵 no negative repercussions for doing so. Hanging out with edward enninful, only the editor in chief of british vogue and his best friend. God. I blessed. You needn worry, though. There a greater than even chance that nothing like this will actually happen, and even if it did, odds are that a random whiner on the internet isn worth more than $10 million. I doubt you would be personally affected.. I bathed with my 3yo since she was 6 weeks old and I just couldn deal with the baby tub anymore. I never wore a swimsuit, which sounds cumbersome and unnecessary when I see no need for modesty in front of such a young child. At this age, I want to instill in my child a sense of normalcy and comfort about the human body, not secrecy.. Face: I only have one face product from them, the Super Shock Highlight in Wisp and I love it. Probably my favorite from them and my go to everyday highlight. Tbh I like it better than my Becca Opal because that texture is just special. The horror of that weighs on me to this day that it's my reality. I have nightmares of a faceless guy grabbing me in a parking lot and coming to the realization "I can do nothing, this Is going to happen. He is going to force having sex on me." I can't wait for the day a man living in the household would possibly be a deterrent, thats even why I wanted to roommate with my male cousin. I know this isnt what you were asking, but it helps my work day and it helps me not feel as destroyed from work. I feel less inclined to call in during (some) flareups if I know my work knows what is going on and can accommodate. It might make things easier for you at least.. However, my mom has gone through phases where she has taken my food, and I have justifiably been really, really fucking pissed about it. I clearly remember eating a tuna sandwich at the table one day, and some of the tuna fell out of the side of the sandwich. I continued eating my sandwich, saving that dollop of tuna for later, when my mom reaches over and scoops the tuna up with her finger and eats it! I literally could have stabbed her in the hand for that. Going after these accounts for reposting something the face of the brand posted to a public forum is ridiculous. 충청북도출장샵 I am not a fan of brands trying to silence content creators especially when this seems to be a common occurrence for the brand. 67 points submitted 1 month ago. Pretty much exactly what I expected. Biopics are fun because you can always tell which characters from the movie were involved in providing source material. You definitely come out of Bohemian Rhapsody with a better appreciation for how cool, smart, funny, creative and handsome Brian May is.

Tagged by @savthemild I never get sick of these things, I just hate having to tag people
Rules: Answer 30 questions then tag 20 blogs you’d like to know better
1. Nickname: Ray (typically), Rachee, Ray Ray, Rach, Rochelle, Ratchel
2. Gender: Female
3. Zodiac: Picses
5. Height: 5'7″ (or 5′8″)
6. Age: 17 (I’m a dancing queen young and sweet)
7. Time: 7:53 PM
8. Favorite Bands/Solo Artists: Def Leppard, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Fall Out Boy (weird, right), REO Speedwagon, The Beatles
9. Song stuck in my head: Too Late For Love by Def Leppard
10. Last movie I saw: In theatres? Infinity War (still not okay thanks for asking)
11. Last thing I googled: probably something about British Romantic authors (I have a final on Tuesday/Wednesday and I am on the edge)

13. Do I get asks: literally never
14. Why I chose my username: long LONG story, but you asked. So when I was in 9th grade, season 9 of Doctor Who came out. The first episode name was “The Magician’s Apprentice”. I changed my title name on twitter to “Capaldi’s Apprentice”. The next episode was “The Witch’s Familiar” so I changed my name to “Capaldi’s Familiar”. I kept doing that to the episode titles for a few months, but eventually the episodes stopped. Around the same time, I had gotten into the song “Killer Queen” by Queen. At one point, I changed my name on twitter to “Capaldi’s Killer Queen” because I couldn’t think of any variations on episode titles anymore. I did the same with my tumblr. Then I got into Supernatural and changed my tumblr title to “Castiel’s Killer Queen”. And I stuck with that one for a long time. Then, later that year I got into Star Trek, and fell in love with that charmingly bitter Doctor McCoy, so I changed my URL and title to McCoy’s Killer Queen. It just stuck. Maybe sometime I’ll change it to Leppard’s Killer Queen...?
15. Following: 57
16. Average amount of sleep: tbh like 8-9 hours which is like 3 times more than all my friends get but it never ever feels like enough (and they all hate me for this)
17. Lucky Number: if I have one I’ve never noticed it << same Sav
18. What am I wearing: black yoga (?) pants and a black Abbey Road t-shirt (I feel like I’m in a jumpsuit)
19. Dream Job: artistic director for a rock band
20. Dream Trip: probably live on a cruise ship for a month. Or at the beach. Or just stay anywhere away from home for a while.
21. Favorite Food: probably chicken alfredo << same Sav i just had some at Panera Bread and mmm nice, but I love this cheesecake stuffed chocolate chip cookie I made once too
22. Play any Instrument: I’ve been teaching myself how to play electric guitar (but with no electrical elements) since about February (don’t know if you can count this as playing or not)
23. Favorite Song: Hysteria by Def Leppard << same Sav. If not Hysteria, then Photograph by the same guys
24. Play(ed) any sport: I played soccer when I was in kindergarten until 3rd grade, I’ve been bowling since I was 7 (10 year anniversary!), and I played volleyball for 4 years in elementary/middle school. (I do drama club too, which most definitely is close to sport)
25. Hair Colour: chocolate brown
26. Eye Colour: hazel-ish. more like a dark green but with a brown ring/explosion around my pupil
27. Language you speak/are learning: I speak English (obviously) but I’ve been taking a German class for 3 years now und ich liebe es! I’m nowhere near fluent but I know some stuff! I’m also taking it again next year for the 4th year in a row
28. Random Fact: I have gotten lost in the woods at least twice (and got me and everyone else out both times) so I have a pretty good sense of direction in the woods.
29. Describe yourself as an aesthetic/things: a forest, walking barefoot on a wooden deck, freckles, glow in the dark stars, leather boots, moonlight, messy hair
I tag @raised-on-radio @dove-turned-destroyer @admiralamott @speedsterspock @okayloki @wholockianalways  @gretchenzellerbarnes @i-am-the-walrus-submarine @fricksavage and that’s about it for now

I know you’re supposed to let people ask you for numbers and THEN answer, but I’m pmsing really fucking hard and struggling to hold on to the one single brain cell I have that’s keeping me from breaking down and just screaming/trashing the place. SOOOOO here’s 100 questions nobody asked me to answer.

18. Do you want children?
FUCK THAT
19. Do you want a church wedding?
I wouldn’t mind having a wedding in a big, beautiful church like if it had a Window(tm) yknow, but there will be ZERO religion in my service. Even then, a wedding in a church is quite low on my list. My top three wedding preferences are:  countryside (but not the kind with cowboy boots and mud and a dirt-floor barn. I mean the bougie white bitch from the city doesn’t actually wanna get dirty kind of countryside,) seaside, and in the woods (like Twilight.)

Nah.

27. Would you like to be a big celebrity?
Money, yeah. Otherwise, nah.
28. What type of music do you like?
All kinds but country. I have a special preference towards 50s ballads, lyrical rap, and 2000s summer hits like Cyclone and Right Thurr.

42. Are you a good judge of character?
No. I’m too eager to make friends.
43. Can you do any other accents other than your own?
It’s not uncommon for me to accidentally do an accent from whatever show I was just watching, especially if I’m talking to myself. I can do a surprising variation on Spanish accents, but that’s also because of my Spanish linguistics class.
44. Do you have a strong accent?
I have a weird accent. I say some things like I’m from Chicago (like, I say “hot dwawg”) but I say some things kind of southernish especially if I get mad, but some things I say Canadian and some British.
45. What is your favorite accent?

58. Do you have much of an ego?
Yes. I’m conceited as shit.
59. Do you suck or bite lollipops?
Suck until they get riddled with holes.
60. Do you talk to yourself?
60% of my verbal interactions are with myself, yes. (30% are with my pets, 10% with other people.)
61. Do you sing to yourself?
Yes.
62. Are you a good singer?
I can match pitch. That doesn’t mean I should.
63. Biggest Fear?
Ending up bogged down with kids I don’t want in a city I hate with a job I’ve been at for 10+ years.

Yes, but not much. I asked my boyfriend to give me a sip of his 4 Loko and fucker was like, “nooo it’s illegal.”
78. Have you ever done drugs?
What makes the boyfriend thing funny is we had spent literally that entire summer high of our asses, but “noooo, it’s illegal for you to drink.” His method of thinking was, It’s illegal for everyone to smoke weed, so it’s fair that everybody breaks that law, but it’s only illegal for people under 21 to drink so it’s not fair.
79. Who was your first real crush?
As in, a real person? Ethan Richards, elementary. I crushed on him for 5 years. (Caleb Smith was a close second, and looking back I think maybe he liked me, too.) But I wrote Ethan a note in 5th grade telling him I liked him and he super broke my heart. 13 years later and I’m still bitching about it.
80. How many piercings do you have?
Currently, 9. I’ve had 13 though.
81. Can you roll your Rs?“

83. How fast can you run?
If I’m drunk, really fucking fast. Sober, not very. (I got wasted at a party and sprinted all the way across my apartment complex to run back to my room and help my roommate get more booze. It was incredible. I almost got hit by a car.)

89. Do you like your age?
No. I’m too old to not know what I want to do in life but too young to know what I want to do in life, and I’m in debt and broke and I have no job and no prospects and everyone keeps asking me and it makes me break down and cry and
90. What makes you angry?
Stupid people. This goddamn dog. Lots of things.
91. Do you like your own name?
Now that the “Becky” thing has subsided a little, yeah. I used to hate all versions of the name Rebecca, but I’m pretty content with Becca. Becca Eileen suits me pretty well I think.
92. Have you already thought of baby names, and if so what are they?
Psh. Even though I don’t want kids, yeah, I’ve thought of some. Most of them are ridiculous now. Fred and George for twins, Zane for a boy, Nonni for a girl, etc. Nothing I would actually choose now.
93. Do you want a boy a girl for a child?
I think assigning importance to the genitalia of my child is a fucking ridiculous and borderline disgusting thing to do. I would want a healthy child, if there were to be a child.

Um. I can sleep for a really long time.
95. What are your weaknesses?
Lol. Everything, my dude. Fucking everything.

97. Were your ancestors royalty?
I highly doubt it.
98. Do you have any scars?
You already asked that.
99. Color of your bedspread?
Black. It’s the Hogwarts school crest!
100. Color of your room?
Beige. My mom wouldn’t let me pick a different color. When I get my own place that lets me color the walls, I want some nice, deep violets with an accent wall that has criss-crossed fuchsia and teal.

This past weekend, my preschooler’s neighborhood buddies didn’t want to play frisbee with him. Despite his insistence, they left him to go play with his soccer ball—and, unsurprisingly, he was fuming.
Although my son didn’t stay mad for long, kids, like adults, can hold on to intense anger when they feel wronged. At its most extreme, this anger can lead young people to ruminate about betrayal and seek revenge through acts like physical aggression that can devastate families and communities.
Can we teach our kids to forgive instead?
As psychologist Robert Enright and psychiatrist Richard Fitzgibbons write, forgiveness is a choice to let go of anger toward someone who hurt you and to think, feel, or act with kindness toward that person. They clarify that forgiveness is not being weak—it takes strength and courage to forgive. It is also not forgetting, condoning, or putting up with being hurt; you can forgive while still seeking justice. And forgiveness is different than reconciling with someone; you can forgive without receiving an apology.
Forgiveness might seem like an impossible feat for a child who doesn’t yet have all the tools in her toolbox that adults do to handle emotions like anger and the desire for vengeance. But a wide range of studies have found that forgiveness programs can help kids of different ages feel better, strengthen their relationships, and improve their academic performance. According to Enright, we can learn from these programs about how to teach age-appropriate forgiveness skills, so kids grow up to be more peaceful and forgiving adults.
Teaching forgiveness around the world
Forgiveness programs typically invite families or students to participate in facilitator-led weekly group sessions over multiple weeks. Children are introduced to conflicts between fictional characters before they are guided to reflect on their own personal conflicts. They explore the different ways to deal with the hurt that results from conflicts, including the option of forgiveness. After children learn the foundational concepts of forgiveness and what forgiveness is and is not, there is facilitated reflection on how to forgive—as modeled by a story character first, and then as a choice they can make toward forgiving someone who hurt them.
In studies, while some kids go through a forgiveness program, other kids are part of a control group so that their results can be compared. Those kids either go about life as usual or learn something else, like effective communication, conflict resolution, assertiveness, or empathy.
First graders all the way through 21 year olds have participated in forgiveness programs like this. They have been implemented in Belfast, Northern Ireland—the most impoverished area of the United Kingdom, which has a history of conflict between Irish Catholics and British Protestants; Milwaukee, Wisconsin—a highly segregated city where children struggle with poverty and there is conflict among racial groups; and some areas of Turkey that are stricken with poverty and violence. They have also been offered to Midwestern teens who experienced a deep personal hurt, like being abandoned, cheated on, emotionally abused, or raped; and to young women in South Korea who were victims of aggression.
After learning forgiveness, some children even perform better at school, have fewer conduct problems and delinquency, and feel more positive about their parents and teachers.
In these studies, forgiveness programs offer kids a variety of benefits compared to control groups—ranging from more empathy and hope to less anger, hostility, aggression, anxiety, and depression. After learning forgiveness, some children even perform better at school, have fewer conduct problems and delinquency, and feel more positive about their parents and teachers.
Forgiveness skills for different ages
In researching forgiveness for over three decades and implementing some of these programs, Enright has gained insights into how to help children and adolescents learn and practice forgiveness. Here, he describes how to set the stage for forgiveness in your very young children and start building their forgiveness skills as they become young adults:

Ages 4-5. Before introducing young children to the subtleties of forgiveness, you can first introduce them to the concept of love—caring for the other for the sake of the other. For example, you can do this by reading picture books to your children in which there are loving family interactions.
Ages 6-7. Starting at about age 6, children have the capacity for what Jean Piaget called concrete operational reasoning, meaning that they now can understand the causes and effects of people’s actions. Because of this advance in reasoning in young children, you now can begin to introduce forgiveness systematically. There are five sequential steps you can take to help such young children become rather sophisticated in their understanding and practice of forgiveness.
Step 1. You can introduce the theme of inherent worth or the idea that all people—no matter who they are or how rich or poor they are or how smart they are—have value. Each person is special, unique, and irreplaceable. Again, you can introduce this concept apart from forgiveness and through picture books like Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who! This is a helpful story for introducing inherent worth because of the repeated theme: “A person is a person no matter how small.”
Step 2. Before introducing the theme of forgiveness itself, you can then lay a further foundation by showing children the themes of kindness, respect, generosity, and again love. You can continue this learning apart from forgiveness and through story books.
Step 3. Once young children know about worth, kindness, respect, generosity, and love, you can then introduce them to forgiveness, but only through stories and not through their own experience of forgiving those who hurt them. You can explain forgiveness this way: When people forgive, they are kind to those who are not kind to them. When people forgive, they try to show respect to those who have not shown respect to them. When people forgive, they try to be generous to those who have not been generous to them. When people forgive, they try to be loving to their family members even if the family members are not loving to them, at least at the moment.
Step 4. You can be very clear to young children that to forgive does not mean automatic reconciliation. Sometimes, a child must stay away from another child if the latter is continually bullying. The one who is being bullied needs to tell an adult.
Step 5. Next, parents can then apply all of this learning to children themselves, but only if they are ready and only if they choose to consider forgiveness. Forgiveness is a choice and should not be pressured. For those who are ready, they can draw on what they have learned from the picture books and consider seeing the other who acted unjustly as possessing worth. For those who are ready, they can then consider offering kindness, respect, generosity, and love toward the offending person.
Because these steps require time, they should be continued for the next several years, using new stories so that the learning deepens in different contexts.
Ages 10-13. As children get older, parents can introduce the three themes of forgiving, receiving forgiveness, and reconciling, which can occur in later elementary school and middle school. To receive forgiveness requires the humility to acknowledge wrongdoing and to wait until the one offended is ready to forgive. To reconcile, the two people are willing to come together again in mutual trust. In other words, the one who was unfair takes steps to change. Forgiving can occur without reconciliation if the one who offends refuses to alter the unfair actions.
Ages 14-18. Once they are versed in the above themes, high schoolers are ready for a more sophisticated forgiving by following the steps in the Forgiveness Process Model. Adolescents in high school may be ready to consider the challenge to forgive not just one person but anyone toward whom they harbor continuing resentment.
They recommend family forgiveness gatherings at least once a week, such as during mealtimes, to talk about what forgiveness means, how it feels, and what is easy and hard about it.
“Forgiveness is a virtue hard to exercise and challenging to implement in the face of injustice but one that offers a concrete hope for peace,” explain Enright and Fitzgibbons. They recommend family forgiveness gatherings at least once a week, such as during mealtimes, to talk about what forgiveness means, how it feels, and what is easy and hard about it.
Because conflict is inevitable, teaching children about forgiveness early on—starting with struggles with playmates over frisbees and soccer balls—may indeed be a path toward building communities of people who prize and cultivate peace.

Designing a Greeting Card Kiosk
By Alexis Kim
OVERVIEW:
I am designing and prototyping a greeting card kiosk. It will be a vending machine that sells cards and stickers to high school students. I researched purchasing general purchasing behaviors and then tested my concept to refine the
EARLY RESEARCH:
Papyrus:
Huge selection of greeting cards.
Birthday section is biggest.
Cards are very unique and artful.
Lots of different styles of design.
Humor/joke designs, minimalistic, physical decorations, art heavy, vintage, graphic design, animals, shiny etc.
Feels more marketed towards female purchasers.
Empty. No customers inside at 10:30 am.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Older Lady in her 60’s. Walgreens, 9/19/18: “It’s so difficult to find a good card. Usually buy from Nordstrom. It’s more expensive but better selection and designs. Buying card for a friend who is having a 60 something birthday. Like Papyrus much more. It’s more beautiful and has lots of beautiful cards. Every one of them is beautiful but each one is $10 - $7. $4.99 is an ok price. I’ve been looking here for half an hour. I have problems with knees that’s why I’m here at Walgreens (easier to get to). Ideally a perfect shopping experience, every card is beautiful. A less nice looking card is ok for someone I don’t really know. Less wording inside is better. Going to look at Papyrus now.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Middle aged man with British accent. Target, 9/19/18: “I bought these [2 humor cards] because I have a warped sense of humor. It’s for my 17 year old son’s birthday. I spent less than 10 minutes looking for them. I’ll give the first one to him 1st thing in the morning. It’ll be the first thing he see’s and he’ll laugh all day about it. And the second golf card is to accompany his gift; I got him a voucher for golf lessons. It’s a spur of the moment thing, and I buy cards for close family only. It’s typical male humor. I’m happy with it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Young professional Female, late 30’s. Target, 9/19/18: Observations: She’s scanning and browsing. Take a step back to see. Look at messages in the Thank You section. Scan first. Message is important.“Giving this to thank a close friend who has been really supportive. I’m going through a big career change and its to thank her for believing in me. My eye goes to the bit above the fold. I’m attracted to fonts, bright colors. I like a mix of modern and unique. I like puns sometimes. I don’t like preachy, cliche, or old, traditional looking cards that my grandma would give. Would rather write my own sentiments. If there’s a lot of words I’ll just glaze over it and lose interest. Sometimes I find something very thoughtful and written in a way I wouldn’t have thought of and appreciate those.  Trader Joe’s has really killer 99 cent cards that I’ll buy a bunch of in advance. I’ll pay $3.99 for an nonembelished card. Something fancy like with rhinestones $4.99. Those kinds of cards are for someone really special and if I gave it to them in person. If mailing, I’ll pick something really flat. Looking here at Target because I’m picking up something for lunch. It’s convenient. Papyrus normally has good stuff. Paper Source has unique/off beaten path and random ones. I’ll buy a months worth of cards at Trader Joe’s and line them up for the month. My friends are so grateful to get real mail these days. It’s so worth it to make them feel so good for just $1.50. Minted - it’s an online order stationary store. Funny and unique. I like to buy cards in advance and hold onto it for months. For example, if I find a good romance one for my boyfriend, I’ll give it to him later. These days I’m also attracted to funny cards if I want to have fun or want to give someone a laugh."

CONCEPT TESTING
Q1: What do you think is going on here? (to learn if your concept is clear)
Q2: What questions do you have? (find out where it's not clear)
Q3: What would you change and why? (find out how they would improve it.)
Q4: Who do you think would use this? (if they would, they will tell you so. If not, listen and learn.)
Q5: Any ideas to add? (capture their ideas; you do not need to use these ideas, but you must listen to them.)
Gina K.17, texting her while she’s in yearbook class; 9/24/18
“So basically someone can buy these stickers or whatever is gonna be on there for cheap b/c like most students don’t keep a lot of money on them or just don’t have a lot in general. These stickers can be for like things to make things look better (in the storyboard) but in general for funnies. I think things like stickers can be used for many things. B/c right now a lot of people like to put stickers on their water bottles. The origami one is unclear. The secret message I like but I’m not sure if people would get the point?? Or like use it b/c I feel like there are a lot more ways now to do secret messages or something. idk we just like use our phones lol. I think it’s a great idea but I’m not sure if a lot of people would use it. And as for the storyboard… Not many people write letters now. I think if you do something handwritten it might be more of a girl thing nowadays??? Thinking about it I do think boys would use it but it does appeal more to girls in terms of most of the things you could use with these products. I think for the way you’re using the stickers in the storyboard you might wanna replace them with girls? Maybe not thank you cards but I can see birthday cards for those who forgot about someone’s birthday. I don’t know about boys but we girls typically just give them their gift and are like happy birthday! And sometimes watch them open their gift. I do find it a pain when it comes to getting bday cards b/c I have to go out to get them lol. And i try to make them but sometimes I just don’t have time. Depends but yea [we give presents] at lunch or b4 school. Lunch is more probable tho. My friends and I still give birthday cards, and I have some but they are just really kiddy lol. Like for someone in elementary school. So if it’s someone I’m not close to I don’t feel comfortable giving it to them lol. We have birthdays almost every 3 months or so. I think the product is ok. The storyboard you might wanna change them to girls and make it like a card instead but you can still incorporate stickers. If you wanna keep them as boys it would be like oh crap I forgot it’s so and so bday and get them like a card with stickers (like its the gift) and give it to the friend. I think it’s good to have the part where it shows that you can buy the product for a cheap price. It’s common for someone not knowing someone’s birthday until the day of. B/c most people don’t tell others what their birthday is unless they ask. The forgetting and the convenience of it is good b/c we are at school 5 days a week and at least like 6 hours lol. I think girls would use this mostly.
Valentyn T.32, phone call; 9/24/18
"The storyboard is trying to describe how using a sticker can increase value of letter. What’s the relationship between Shawn and Fred? It’s kind of weird. Feels girly. It’s feels fine if it's two girls who are friends. It’s also weird if a boy was writing to a letter to a girl. When I was student girls like stickers; boys don’t like stickers. Maybe you should make stickers have more value to differentiate them. Like some stickers can be really rare like pokemon. Or make some of them tattoo stickers. Target seems pretty limited to school kids."
Stacey T.31, texting her while she’s at work; 9/24/18
“Probably the one thing that sticks out it is the ‘I’m so poor’ comment. It has god in it, and it also is making a social commentary that spending only $5 is cause for someone to say with despair ‘God I’m so poor.’ I might be the wrong person to ask for feedback on Something like this because I’ve also been poor, though not as poor as there are people in the world, and hearing something like that riles me up. But everything else is lovely. Pretty straightfoward (what’s going on). Though it’s hard to tell where everything is happening. If you didn’t tell me at the start that this machine is in a high school… Maybe it’s a San Francisco thing, but growing up, I wouldn’t be able to bring cupcakes to a friend. I took the bus to school, and I didn’t have a way of getting to a grocery store or cupcake store bakery whatever. I wouldn’t connect with this experience unless I grew up in a city with those amenities. Nor did I even have $5 to spend, maybe in the summer when I had a job. But I think all of what I just said is coming from the far that it’s disjointed, the comic strip/storyboard. I liked the big hug in the end. [Who would use this?] Kids collecting stickers and fighting over who has the most coolest ones; Kids with money; Kids wanting to hack the machine so they can get them out for free; Maybe teachers. Beware of the angry parents who might not like things being sold to their kids in a school setting."
REVISED CONCEPT
I changed the persona to a female as all of my test subjects remarked that the cards and stickers would more likely be bought be females. I made sure to include in the Persona details about the student’s busy life and inability to get around independently. I also changed the storyboard to reflect the last minute and convenient nature of the purchase.

answers to brizzy’s hp video ??
soooo brizzy posted this ‘26 UNSOLVED Harry Potter Questions! ft Tessa Netting’ video to her channel and i felt like i had to answer some of these questions lmao so here goes:
1. what power do boggarts have? i’m not sure how it goes in the books because it’s been a while since i’ve read prisoner of azkaban but in the movie, lupin said that as the dementor is in fact a boggart, it can do no real harm, but it did make harry faint. i’m not sure how it’d be for snakes/spiders/other venomous things though. maybe it can just bite you but without the venom?? anyway good question! 2. why can’t harry see thestrals after he kills quirrell with his bare hands/why doesn’t he see them in his first year since he saw his mother die? for me the movies are not canon so i’ll just take the answer from the books, in which he fainted, simple as that. for his mother; i believe jo once said you have to acknowledge the death and accept it, and baby harry was too young to register what was happening, so even though he probably saw it happen, he was too young to realise what was going on. he also didn’t see the thestrals at the end of his fourth year, even though he saw cedric die, because he was still very traumatised and didn’t accept cedric was actually dead. 3. what rights do muggle parents have? I DON’T KNOW AND I WANNA KNOW AS WELL! i also always wondered how the dursley’s sent harry’s christmas ‘gifts’ to hogwart?? like, did they use an owl?? anyway i suppose for the diagon alley thing, i think it was once stated that muggleborns are accompanied by a witch or wizard to buy all their school supplies also when brizzy talks about marrying a muggle.. hmmmm i don’t know?? imagine if you’re a person that has a lot of flings that only last for a few weeks or a couple of months, you can’t possibly tell every partner that you’re magic? lol. i suppose for families it’s different, since dudley also knew about harry. also can wizarding law prosecute muggles for talking about witches/wizards?? 4. the eleven thing most people start showing their first magical signs at the age of 5, but i think british children go to secondary school at the age of 11 so i guess hogwarts ‘chose’ that age so it tallies with muggleborns or wizards who chose to go to muggle elementary school. also maybe you’re magical skills are fully ‘grown’(??) at the age of 11? 5. to what extent do muggle governments know about the wizarding world? i genuinely think it’s just the muggle prime minister who knows about it, and if anything happens in the magical world that muggles need to be concerned of, they just bring it out without full details (like when sirius black was on the muggle news but they didn’t tell which prison he escaped from) 6. the magical government in general i think it’s just people who are important in the ministry of magic who can say ‘we want them as our new minister of magic’ and they ask that person and when they refuse (like dumbledore) they ask the second idk. good question hmmm 7. peter pettigrew i know in the movies they show peter pettigrew on the map, but as i said before, i don’t consider the movies to be canon, since harry also performed magic at his house during the summer holidays in prisoner of azkaban. so, there’s this theory that says you can’t see animagi on the map unless you know they are animagi. for instance, lupin saw peter pettigrew on the map, but harry didn’t, and neither did the twins. besides that, gryffindor tower is a TOWER. at night, all the name labels would be on top of each other, so you couldn’t possibly make out all the individual names. and i imagine the twins not knowing the name, so even if they did see it appear once in a while, they maybe just didn’t pay any attention to it. also i don’t think they used the map a lot when ron came to school, because they already knew it by heart :P 8. transfiguration the only thing i can say here is: ANIMAL ABUSE. but i think to the animal it’d be like sleeping; you’re not aware it happened, so you just wake up and suddenly maybe 10 years have passed, like tessa said :’). i’m also with brizzy that when the spell didn’t work properly is because scabbers was actually pettigrew. but also; i can’t exactly remember how this scene happened in the books :) :) what i always wondered though; in the first book mcgonagall transfigures her desk into a pig and back; what about the pig’s soul/connsciousness? does it have a baby mind, is it immediately an adult? does it even have a soul?? hmmmmm???? 9. what do wizard kids do before they get their hogwarts letter i’m not sure this was stated in the books or in an interview, but i read somewhere that a lot of wizard kids go to muggle school or are homeschooled. but i feel like a lot of wizarding children would be illiterate since it’s not obligatory ?? so the system sucks a bit, like a lot of wizarding systems do lol 10. timeturners LET’S NOT EVEN START ON TIME-TURNERS LMAO (possible cursed child spoilers here!!) on pottermore it is said that it is too dangerous to use a time-turner for more than 5 hours at once, so you couldn’t use them for all situations. it is also extremely hard to get one, because you need all these forms and blah blah, like when hermione needed one for her lessons she had to show her grades and all that, so i suppose you couldn’t just say “hey let’s kill voldemort using a time-turner” idk. also good thing they were all destroyed in order of the phoenix because I HATED THEM and then they brought them back in cursed child URGHGHGH. also i probably watched too much doctor who but if time travel isn’t done right it makes me angry, like when brizzy said; they heard the axe but it happened to be a pumpkin so wtf?? if they hadn’t used the time turner it would have suddenly been buckbeak’s head?? idk thinking about it stresses me out because it CREATES A FRIGGIN PARADOX !!!!!!! imagine you go back in time to kill voldemort, but when you are on the scene he gets killed so you don’t have to go back in time IT’S A FRIGGIN PARADOX MAKE IT STOP 11. the department of mysteries I NEED ANSWERS AS WELL I NEED A SEVEN PART BOOK SERIES ON THE DEPARTMENT OF MYSTERIES. IF NEEDED, JUST GIVE ME A BOOK PER DOOR IN THE CIRCULAR ROOM I WOULD READ THEM ALL PLSSSS I’M BEGGING YOU 12. the veil?? yess the veil wtaf. okay it’s been a while since i’ve read order of the phoenix but as far as i can remember, sirius wasn’t hit with avada kedavra but he just fell through the veil ?? i’m not entirely sure though :o so i think the veil is just a portal to the afterlife but if you decide to walk through it you’d die as well. idk that’s my theory of it. 13. what happens when a ghost goes through the veil hmmmmm good question! i can relate to what brizzy said that it’s the only way of going on to the afterlife but since the department of mysteries is supposed to be a secret ghosts don’t know about it?? or maybe it allows them to travel from one world to another. i’d like the first theory best though lol 14. why doesn’t harry talk to sirius through the mirror believe me i’ve been asking myself the same question for YEARS. this still bothers me SO MUCH. “cuz harry’s dumb” YAS he is so dumb like SIRIUS WOULD STILL BE ALIVE IF YOU HAD USED THE MIRROR i honestly want to punch something every time i think about this 15. ball point pens AESTHETIC Y’ALL 16. glasses because they make harry look smart even though he is not smart at all. nah kidding idk?? the only people in the wizarding world that are known to wear glasses are harry, james, dumbledore, moaning myrtle, rita skeeter and mcgonagall (i’m probably forgetting some so correct me if i’m wrong), which makes ZERO sense to me. there probably is an eye-fixing spell though, otherwise more people would wear glasses? anyway i genuinely have no idea 17. peeves in philosopher’s stone one of the ghosts says “he’s not even a ghost” so there is a difference between ghosts and poltergeists. also i believe while the other ghosts are transparent, peeves has colour i think?? he wears a bonnet at some point, so does that make him solid? plothole probs because he can float through walls. but yes i think he is born as a poltergeist, apart from that, no idea 18. straps for wands brizzy’s reaction to this is literally me lmao. 19. crimes/aurors aurors are also called ‘dark wizard catchers’ so i think their job specifically is to catch dark wizards. but i think the definition of dark wizard reaches a bit further than just death eaters, so they’d probably also arrest thiefs and stuff. plus the wizarding community is pretty small in comparison to the muggle world so they probably don’t need all these ‘divisions’ in law people (idk the proper word lol) 20. why do they put wizards on trial instead of just using veritaserum because if you got a strong mind, you can fight the veritaserum, like harry fought the imperius curse. this was even in the books i think 21. wizards and christianity godric’s hollow is not a full wizard town, hogsmeade is the only one :) there just happen to live a lot of wizards in godric’s hollow. but the church was probably built by the muggles. for christmas/easter. i never really thought about this but i don’t think pureblood wizards are particularly religious. like tessa said, maybe they just thought ‘oh what a fun holiday let’s steal it’ lol. 22. how do you create a horcrux YES PLEASE I JUST NEED ALL THE ANSWERS 23. pensieves they’re so mysterious omg!! but i also think you just have like a general idea of the memory or like a title, but the whole specific memory is in the bottle? 24. wizarding population jo has stated that this is something she didn’t think through because there are only like 8 gryffindor students in harry’s year ?? even though there are indeed around 1000 students at hogwarts. maybe less babies were created during the first wizarding war? idk lol but in general i have no idea! i don’t think it’s very common tbh! 25. felix felicis it is incredibly hard to make and could be extremely dangerous if done wrong i believe. also doesn’t it take like 6 months to make?? of course an emergency stash would be handy but that could also get stolen by death eaters so i think it’s safest to just not make it in big doses lol 26. portraits this is actually on pottermore! for the headmaster portraits it is said that a portrait of the new headmaster is like placed in a dark room or something and the headmaster just talks to their portrait so it knows how they think and speak and all that. but i think it is also mentioned that all magical portraits do have some basic conversational skills. idk how painting a magical portrait goes though; imagine you’re peacefully painting severus snape and as soon as you’ve done the mouth it starts talking to you?? lol
yayyyy this took me over an hour to do!!! so please appreciate it lmaooo. this is all off the top of my head so correct me if i’m wrong please :D i also have a ton of random questions myself but this post is already way too long so i will spare you those lmao.
