I talked a little bit about this on that Loverfest outfit poll, but Taylor always "previews" the outfits she will wear on tour in earlier performances. I thought this would be interesting to add to my #taylortouroutfits series. So starting with the Fearless tour, there's some interesting predictive programming:
Let's start with the first single of the Fearless era, Love Story. Taylor performed this song live for the first time at the 2008 CMA awards. The stage was decorated to look like a castle, and Taylor wore a purple ball gown. Before the end of the song, she changed into a white wedding dress, complete with a headband. Taylor did something VERY similar with her Fearless Tour performance of this song, just minus the fountain and guest appearance by Justin Gaston. She wore a red ball gown, and changed into a white dress and matching headband:
Tumblr media
Fans noticed that the white Love Story wedding dress was the exact same one as the prom dress she wore in the You Belong With Me music video.
Tumblr media
Speaking of You Belong With Me, Taylor has an evolution of performance outfits with this one, going all the way back to the Fearless album photoshoot. Taylor was depicted as a marching band nerd in the album booklet next to the printed lyrics of this song. She wore a blue and black marching band outfit and her signature blue nerd glasses (which I think were actually hers she wore irl). So observant fans were not surprised when she wore a similar blue and black marching band outfit in the You Belong With Me music video. For the Fearless Tour, Taylor also wore a marching band uniform. This one was yellow, white, and gold - colors that would become associated with the Fearless album.
Tumblr media
One of Taylor's signature looks at this point in her career was sundresses and cowboy boots. So fans were not surprised when Taylor stepped out on stage in a sundress and cowboy boots during the Fearless Tour.
Tumblr media
Notably, this outfit is worn during the b stage portion of the show, when Taylor sings Tim McGraw, a song off of her first album. And the sundress and cowboy boots look is mostly associated with her first album.
The other signature look for Taylor at the time was sparkly dresses. Specifically, Taylor frequently wore a sequined sleeveless shift dress. Taylor had multiples of this dress in every color - blue, silver, gold, etc. I freaked out a little when I noticed Taylor brought back this signature look - this time in red - for the Fearless Tour. Another fun little fact about this dress is that she wore a silver version of it when she performed with the Jonas Brothers. And on the Fearless Tour, she wore the red version of this dress during Forever and Always, a song about Joe Jonas.
Tumblr media
Finally, the guitars. The guitars might as well be considered accessories to Taylor's tour outfits. Taylor first debuted this silver sparkly guitar in the Our Song music video. And Taylor brought out the same guitar to play Our Song on the Fearless Tour (and Our Song only! She played Fearless on the koa guitar).
Tumblr media
And for the finale. Taylor wore a black strappy dress for her performance of Should've Said No at the ACM awards in 2008. Taylor wore a similar black strappy dress for her performance of Should've Said No on the Fearless Tour (for the first few shows).

what do you think it's the most iconic tour outfit of each tour? Basically what's THE outfit you think of when you think of that tour. (+ which one do you think willl be the one for the eras tour).
ohh this is such a good question!!
i want to say this sparkly dress for the fearless tour but i guess the marching band outfit is up there too? but the silver sparkly reallyyyy takes it (i think there's two even and they both are just sooo fearless to me)
for speak now tour it HAS to be the purple dress.
for red tour it's definitely the ringmaster look (however the black and white outfit she had on for treacherous is one of my all time favorite tour looks of hers)
1989 tour wise i feel like i'm torn between any variation of the welcome to new york skirt/crop top/sparkly jacket look or the all white crop top & shorts with the black boots !! both v iconic to me
for reputation i think i want to say the rainbow dress? the other variations were cute too but the rainbow dress always just stood out to me. also maybe the sparkly green jacket over the bodysuit for the acoustic set <3 i have coveted that jacket since i first saw it
for eras tour i think it HAS to be the pink and blue lover bodysuit. maybe because i'm literally staring at it on the film poster but i think it's suchhh an iconic look (and will continue to be!!) (a couple of my faves though are the white folklore dress & odlr midnights bodysuit)

also while im talking about eras tour AND MY OUTFIT i like i am not sure if i want to wear my midnights dress (dress like the taylor swift song) BECAUSE i have like i have a dress with like bejeweled (bejeweled like the taylor swift song) silver stars based off the jumpsuit thingy ms swift wore to the vmas afterparty BUT i already wore my dress to homecoming (no one got the reference tho i was very sad AND I HAVE FRIENDS WHO CLAIM TO BE SWIFTIES!!! i cant believe they havent memorized every outfit shes ever worn ever this is why we cant have nice things [this is why we cant have nice things like the taylor swift song]) anyways i dont know if i want to wear it again or if i should mastermind (mastermind like the taylor swift song)up a whole new outfit (i dont wear alot of sparkles but i was thinking maybe a mirrorball or bejeweled look perhaps? or i love the sparkly black rep outfit!!! <- i kinda wanna do smth from rep bc thats my favorite album but idk what exactly. i think like the little lyric jokes are cute (the starbucks lover thingy and stuff!!) so perhaps i will do something like that. i dont know what my favorite lyrics are tho. ALSO in my wildest dreams (wildest dreams like the taylor swift song) i would do a blood soaked gown (<- lyric from yoyok) BUT the blood soaked gown is the speak now dressDO YOU SEE MY VISION bc i love the speak now dress (both the one ms swift wore on tour and the one on the cover) AND LIKE??????!!!! but that would be too over the top so we are not doing that bc i am not fearless (fearless like the taylor swift song)and do not want to show up to the train (im taking the train) covered in fake blood ANYWAYS ANYWAY i dont know what im gonna wear but i definitely am going to get a jacket ND HERES MY VISION im gonna put patches and stuff and paint it and its gonna be entirely taylor swift themed AND since im lucky enough to be going to TWO CONCERTS for two of my favorite artists i will be making an arctic monkeys jacket too for that show!!!!!!!!!! AND ITS GONNA BE GREAT

A Comprehensive List of the Symbolism and Details in “Look What You Made Me Do”
I’m including everything, from the obvious to the minor details and symbols that at this point are only speculation, to big and small things that made the video amazing. Here we go.
The video, of course, opens with an aerial pan of a graveyard. The specific site that Taylor is buried at, supposedly, the graves spell out “TS”.
“Here Lies Taylor Swift’s Reputation”
Other names on the surrounding gravestones include “Nils Sjoberg”, the pseudonym she used when she wrote “This is What You Came For”, and Joseph Kahn, the director of LWYMMD as well as Blank Space and Bad Blood
Zombie Taylor is wearing the same dress Taylor wore in the “Out of the Woods” music video, which was the final true music video released from 1989 (the New Romantics video was all tour footage). People have taken this to mean either she never truly made it out of the woods or one of the many allusions to the death of her old self.
All the gravestones are tilted during the “tilted stage” line
The outfit that Taylor is wearing when she is being buried into the ground is from the 2014 Met Gala, which was the last public event Taylor attended before the 1989 era began.
While a lot of the public has speculated that Taylor bathing in a tub of diamonds is a jab at KKW’s robbery, a lot of fans see the comparisons to a performance of Blank Space at the Grammy Museum, and I can’t remember the exact quote, but it’s about what people see her as.
There’s also a single dollar bill in the tub, referencing the symbolic $1 she won in her recent assault case.
People think her makeup in this scene is also really similar to how her makeup looked in the Blank Space video, which was another song in which she portrayed a character that the media believed her to be, even though it wasn’t true.
The camera looks like it’s out of focus for a second, but if you look closely, Taylor is clapping along to the beat of the song in the mirror.
When Taylor fires her finger gun, a real spark shoots out of her fingers as if she’s shooting a real gun.
She wears a ton of snake jewelry, and tons of snakes slither up to her throne, a direct reference to post-KKW drama where everyone left snake emojis on all her Instagram posts.
On a couple of the columns as well as the gold skull she rests her hand on, there is an engraving of “Et tu, Brute?” which is a quote from a Shakespeare play. In the scene, Caesar is being stabbed to death, betrayed by his friend, Brutus.
One of the snakes serves Taylor tea (serving or spilling tea is now slang for spilling dirt on someone, or exposing something bad about them).
The entire crashing a car followed by a paparazzi swarm of her posing, to me, is just a general analogy of causing drama to get attention
BUT some fans have noticed that the car she drives is a Maserati, and have made comparisons to the “driving a new Maserati down a dead end street” line from Red. In addition, in the next scene, she’s holding a Grammy, alluding to when Random Access Memories beat Red for AOTY, but the announcer drew out the “rrr” sound making her and her team thinking for a split second she won. I’m sure there’s video online of her reaction.
One more thing about this scene: She’s sporting a haircut very similar to the one Katy Perry has. Katy has never won a Grammy.
(Also the leopard in the passenger seat has a 13 necklace)
People have made the obvious metaphoric comparisons to her in an orange outfit in a cage to being a prisoner. This is further emphasized by the armed guards that surround the cage. People also consider being caged a metaphor for being in a zoo and locked up and watched like an animal.
There’s a rat on her plate during the “feast”. People have made jokes about this being symbolic of Calvin Harris. I’m not sure why.
Taylor & co. infiltrate a safe wearing cat masks, giving some fans hope that she has not shed everything about her formal self.
Her sweater also reads “Blind for Love”, making comparisons to her long-standing reputation as a serial dater.
People believe Taylor and a crew of girls riding motor cycles is an allusion to the Bad Blood music video.
When Taylor burns the stack of money, and when she comes in with a baseball back, the banner in the background reads “stream.co”, a direct allusion to her letter to Apple Music and pulling her catalog from the Spotify music streaming surface, leading people to believe she did this to make more of a profit and that she’s money hungry.
The next scene is the media portrayal of her squad. She is an evil dictator who recruits beautiful, plastic models for her cult. You can see the banner flashes “Squad U”, pictures, of cats, and Taylor’s lucky number 13.
Everyone also wears black leather, which people think is another allusion to Bad Blood.
And people think all of the bodies piled next to each other might be a reference to Kanye’s “Famous” video.
All of the men at Taylor’s beck and call is another reference to her being called a diva and “kidnapping men and holding them hostage in her house”, which is another paraphrased quote from the Grammy Museum performances.
The African-American back-up dancer who hold the pen during this scene is actually Todrick Hall, one of Taylor’s real life friends.
Taylor sawing the wings of the plane is believed to be a metaphor for her taking back the narrative.
All the male backup dancers are wearing “I <3 TS” crop tops, which her ex Tom Hiddleston was seen wearing while they were together.
There are also 8 backup dancers, and Taylor reportedly has 8 famous ex-boyfriends.
And now for everyone’s favorite part of the video: Taylor stands in front of a neon letter T in a jumpsuit that reads “rep”, short for reputation. This is the new Taylor, and she is standing on top of a mountain of people who are trying to save themselves from some kind of doom. But these people are actually older versions of Taylor from through the years. Some major ones include the ballerina outfit from Shake It Off, the ringleader outfit from WANEGBT on the Red tour, her nerdy Junior Jewels shirt from the YBWM video, and the sparkly dress, guitar, and 13 on her hand from the Fearless tour. Other ones that are not as visible are the iHeartRadio Awards, the 2015 VMAs, a polka dot shirt from WANEGBT, her 22/Everything Has Changed outfit from the Red tour, her Style outfit from the 1989 tour, WANEGBT pajamas, and several other looks from music videos and appearances she’s made over the years
Taylor’s Junior Jewels shirt has the names of her real life friends written on it, including Ed Sheeran, Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Todrick Hall, Alana, Danielle, & Este Haim, Lena Dunham, etc.
When Reputation Taylor kicks YBWM Taylor in the face, the shoes she is wearing are very similar to the ones she wore in her most recent Vogue cover, which was one of her first interviews post-1989 era.
Then Taylor blasts her former selves off the mountain and they fall to their death. This is what I think is the general theme going into the Reputation era. In order to save herself, Taylor has to kill off her older selves and become someone new, someone the media already thinks she is, in order to keep any respect. Even before, when the song first came out, many people considered the message of the song very similar to Blank Space. Taylor is playing a character, someone who she most certainly is not but the media certainly believes her to be. She’s taking on this persona as a tongue-in-cheek clapback to how the media portrays her. And as she said with Blank Space, “If you don’t get the joke you don’t deserve to get the joke” (again I’m paraphrasing).
Towards the end of the song, the Maserati explodes and kills the paparazzi, but Taylor walks away unscathed.
She spray paints “reputation” onto the plane with no wings, more analogies to her taking back control of her own narrative.
When the songs ends, one of the backup dancers grabs her butt, which people think is another reference to her assault case.
And now the other fan favorite part: 15 different versions of Taylor stand in front of the plane and argue. iTunes lists 15 total tracks for reputation.
Shake It Off Taylor falls onto the floor in the same way she did at the end of the video. KKW Taylor is shaking her ass.
YBWM Taylor pulls a surprised face, and both Zombie and SIO Taylor call her annoying and that “she can’t be that surprised all the time”. People have been making fun of her since the very beginning for constantly being surprised whenever she wins awards.
Zombie Taylor gets very angry when Reputation Taylor calls her a bitch, which a lot of people think is another reference to “Famous”. After KKW leaked footage of Taylor approving some of the lyrics, Taylor defended herself by saying she never approved the “I made that bitch famous” line
Fearless Taylor simply says “y’all”, a reference to her country roots, and Red Taylor accuses her of being too nice and very fake. Another criticism she’s faced over the years,
Fearless Taylor starts to cry at this, and another Reputation Taylor rolls her eyes at her “playing the victim”. We all know this is something Taylor’s been called a lot over the years, but especially more recently after the Katy/KKW feuds.
Another new version of Taylor simply holds a snake and hisses at everyone, again referencing everyone calling her a snake after the KKW incident.
Met Gala Taylor observes another new Taylor in surprise. Since MG Taylor is pre-1989, some people think her attitude is more innocent and pure here, how she was before the 1989 era began and her reputation began to falter
This new Taylor is “getting receipts” of Fearless Taylor and is “going to edit this later”, direct references to Katy, Swish Swish, and KKW on Snapchat.
We round this out with one more Taylor--VMA Taylor, complete with silver dress, Moonman, and mic, exactly how she appears in the infamous photo of her and Kanye in 2009. She says she “would like to be excluded from this narrative”, a direct quote from Taylor’s statement after KKW’s snapchat leak.
Finally, one more detail that fans have picked up on is the last frame, in which all the Taylors are in the shot and yell at VMA Taylor to shut up. However, the 15th Taylor stands on the plane wing and doesn’t seem to be participating. People believe this is another symbol of how the reputation era is going to go, and Taylor’s mental state at this point. On the wing, she is alone, separated from everyone else, separated from all of her older selves. As she says in the song, “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me.” After everything that’s happened, she can only rely on herself. She is the only one who is going to have any say from here on out. She destroyed the wings so no one else could fly it for her, but she’ll be damned if she flies that plane on anything but her own terms.
This bitch did not miss a single thing and I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the best video of her career so far. I love her so much, and I’ve never been more proud. Brava, @taylorswift. Brava.
(please feel free to add to this if you think i missed anything)

I Have A Lot of Feelings About Taylor Swift
First of all, let me get my personal feelings out of the way. (Oh, who am I kidding? This is all personal.)
I was a little sad and a little mad for the longest time after I found out about the trial but I didn’t look into the details until it started.
Then, the day after my birthday, because birthdays are cursed, the trial started. I was fully pissed and ready to kill a man (read: one man specifically).
And then, I just lost it. It was at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday (day 3 of the trial) that I finally LOST IT. I was reading updates on Twitter from the press in the court room. Taylor’s mom, Andrea, was on the stand and she was telling the court what happened.
It was hysterical, uncontrollable, loud, ugly, SOBBING. It finally hit home like a bullet through my heart. Only once before did I ever feel this way about something that wasn’t about me and my life and that was the day after the election.
I know I am making it sound like the world just ended but I am not exaggerating.
My part of my world ended on November 9th, 2016. A part of my heart broke on August 9th of 2017. (Can we please just skip over the ninth day of every month from now?)
This is the story of what happened after the assault that day: she thanked them for coming, told her Mom about it, they decided to not make what happened public, she went on to performing that night’s show, and then put up walls.
That was the first time something like that ever happened and she made sure it would be the last.
Of course, a man (or maybe it was two) still managed to grab on to her ankle on the 1989 World Tour. Looking back at that, now knowing about what happened in 2013, I can understand the fear in her face and the shock in her body in the video that recorded the event so much better now. I can almost swear she was having flashbacks.
https://twitter.com/holyground_13_/status/895409851639181315?s=09
The gold sparkly dress was from the Fearless era. The purple one was from the Speak Now era. The striped tops were from Red, the one where she crowd-surfed was at an award show and the other one was on her tour. Fast forward, the 1989 tour not only saw the end of this, the stage was also absurdly far away from the audience considering that she was the performer and should have been out of reach of the audience.
She no longer goes through the crowd, which was her absolutely favorite thing to do. She would hug as many people as she can, hold as many hands as she can, pick up as many children as she can, thank as many people as she can. Because she never, not for one moment, lost sight of the fact that we made her career possible and we are there because we love her. She never for one moment stopped treating us as if we were her world.
I think at least some of us thought she stopped because of security risks. But the truth is that she stopped because of something traumatic that happened and left her scarred, not because she didn’t trust her fans.
A few years ago, she yelled at her security (yelled as in used harsh words, not has in raised her voice, because can you even imagine her yelling) because they told her she couldn’t see her fans. That was one of the few times, if not the only time, I’ve seen her lose her temper; even including all of the times she was attacked with rude and invasive questions during interviews, even then, she always managed to remain graceful and poised. But when it comes to us, she loses all calm and does as much as she possibly could to make us happy. She bakes for us after inviting us to her homes and sends us Christmas presents and stalks us on social media, like, who even does that? Yeah, we really don’t deserve her.
She is a white feminist and a flawed human being. (Now that I look back at it, her lack of political participation this past year have been at least partially because of the pending trial.) But she is a better person that any of us can ever hope to be and a better person than this world ever deserved.
Andrea, known to the Swifties as Mama Swift, has the kind of relationship with her daughter that Lorelai Gilmore has with Rory and I am perpetually jealous. Andrea said that day, amongst many other heartbreaking things, “I didn’t not want this event to define her life.” (Yes, of course I cried harder.) That was why she didn’t want it to go public.
But of course, it did anyways. But hey, at least Taylor got a few extra years to build up her career to unimaginable heights so now, if she falls, she can’t hit the ground. But she shouldn’t fall. This is perhaps the post important thing Taylor has ever done for the world.
Taylor Swift deserves better. WOMEN deserve better.
As much as I understand how low this falls on the scale of “How Badly A Woman Could Have Been Hurt”, as much as I realize that at least 40% of my anger is because this is happening to Taylor and only the other half is about what actually happened to her, I also am all too aware of how representative this is of something so much bigger than just one person and how monumental it is that such a trial like this one is even happening.
I am proud of her for deciding to go through this rather than settle to avoid the attention. I am proud of her for standing up for herself and women everywhere. I am proud of her for standing up against rape culture and using her fame to draw attention to this. I am proud of her for doing what is right over what is easy; she wouldn’t be Taylor Swift if she didn’t.
If there are any silver linings to this dark cloud, it’s these: So many women have come forth with their stories, I’ve seen it and I am still seeing it. She is already making an impact, even if the world is silent. Plus, it is now confirmed that this fandom is woke af (not all of us, a minor fraction of us are still being shit). Maybe it took something this big to get so many of us this angry, but we are fully pissed off right now and we are never going to let this go.
Bonus.
I think you can guess even before you read the rest why it took me two years from late 2012 to late 2014 to go from hearing my first Taylor Swift song to becoming a Swiftie.
It wasn’t that I didn’t like her music. It wasn’t that I wouldn’t have liked her. I have not changed that much in the years all things considered and I evidently absolutely adore her now.
It was because the only thing I can remember anyone ever saying about her to me from those years was and I quote: “She has too many boyfriends.” I shit you not. Those were the exact words and it is BURNED into my mind. I definitely didn’t stand up for her then, I also definitely had no way to defend her because I knew so little, so I probably was like “yeah, I guess” even if the statement didn’t make me fully comfortable.
It wasn’t until I found her name in a book I read that hailed her as one of the great female country artists of the age. That’s when I could see the real her.
The novel featured one song from each of these artists. Taylor’s was A Place In This World, track 4 of her debut album. That song made me look up her old music and the history of her entire career. That was in mid 2014, end of Red, beginning of 1989. That song gave me a place in which I felt understood, it gave me a voice I didn’t have before.
Little by little, I memorized every lyric, found the story behind every song, watched every interview, and let her become such a huge part of my life. In return, she changed it and made it better and become the one person who was somehow there for me when no one else was.
Shocking.
In retrospect: I think my friends all knew I was a Swiftie before I did.
And to think that I was kept from that for two whole years because of how particularly sexist the world is and will continue to be in the foreseeable future when it comes to her.
Still, I do believe that history will remember her in kindness and see her for who she is and all that she is, not some twisted depiction of her based on blatant ignorance and misinformation. Maybe the textbooks will someday say what the world isn’t saying today: Taylor Swift deserves better.
That is, assuming we don’t die from a nuclear World War III under the Trump Administration.
