Hi! It's ok if you're not comfortable awnsering- but I was wondering how much you make a month from art on average? I'm going into my second year of art school and I'm getting worried about how lucrative online independent work would be. You seem to have a system that I could see myself enjoying, specially compared to the usual instagram and youtube artists you see thriving from online work. And if you don't want to give out numbers: Does it make a living or do you need/work a second job? Ty <3

Hey! This is a great question and I’m going to apologize in advance because it’s going to be a LONG answer! Mostly because I think this is a great way to shed some light on just more “regular” type circumstances for art jobs things! But I hope I can answer this question sufficiently!! 🙏💖

Okay - so I don’t feel comfortable saying how much I make (I’m superstitious that if I share it in a public space it will be dashed IMMEDIATELY) but I can definitely talk about logistics!

So to preface everything with the simple answer: I DO make enough now to have a living! It’s a SMALL living, but I’m able to focus just on my artwork for now! Which is honestly still wild to me and I AM waiting for the rug to be pulled out from underneath me at any given moment (I am throwing some salt over my shoulder as we speak, just in case)

Now I just want to talk about some general insight points about my current situation/how I got to this current situation:

I have only JUST been able to move out (I’m 28 now)

I live in a shared apartment with my friend (fate was SO on our side and this has been a whirlwind 2.5 months omg)

I have student loans to pay off ($400/month! Gross!) on top of rent/life payments. If you’re in this boat, always keep it in mind!

For 7 years after college, I was working on art (commissions, personal, etc) and also working “part time” (30+ hr work weeks so lmao not really but for employer-benefit reasons 🙄) This is for 7 years after school! It took a bit to get here!

I only had to pay a small rent when I was living at home so while it took 7 years (underpaid, family circumstances, physical/mental health woo!) I WAS able to save enough to move out

most days I can still hardly believe I’m here @ w @;; and it’s a constant working process to figure out how to stay here as well! I work 8-10 hour days, 6 days a week.

And if you’re like me, I don’t come from money, so my parents aren’t in a position to help and I have student loan debt. This has informed a lot of my adult life!

That said, I have been lucky to be in a family with a steady lower-middle class income AND ALSO in a pretty stable/functional family situation so that I was able to move back home for a while to save a bit of money. Not everyone has those circumstances to plan financially! But if you come from a more secure/affluent financial background, some of this might not apply to you - which is fine too.

My advice would be to first and foremost make a budget list for yourself (love my google sheets! I have MULTIPLE budget lists lmao)

Make a budget list that covers what you would NEED to earn each month. And then from there, make a sheet that shows what you DO earn each month from art!

Try to track that income for at least 3-4 months of steady work!

If those numbers continue to meet up, then I would say that’s a green light!

If they don’t meet up - maybe look into some part time stuff! Which, like I said before, can be REALLY solid. And it’s always solid at least for a steady line of income, which is great! 💪✨

And remember to treat your job like a JOB! Clock in and clock out! It’s just a job! Not your life! Keep doing you! 💖 Too many times have I given 100% on jobs when it really should be like 80%! Save your energy for yourself too!

And if you are able, think about moving back home. Saving money is ALWAYS a solid choice. Give yourself some time to figure shit out and get your ducks in a row.

I’m only able to do what I can now because I lived at home for 7 years and worked pretty non stop! (working in the morning to afternoon at my first job, coming home doing chores, and then working from 8-11 on art)

BUT, always know, that we are NOT the same person!! You’re going to have a different path from me and so will many others! But in case you wanted a general picture of my circumstance, I’m hope this helped!

And as always, do NOT feel pressured by my advice here!

Advice is just to help INFORM your OWN decisions! Never to make them for you! 💖

I feel like I both talked about A LOT and I’m ABSOLUTELY missing something from here! 🤔 So I apologize for such a novel!

But if you or anyone else reading this thinks of a question about this type of stuff, let me know! I try to be pretty transparent about this since I feel like I’ve only seen a lot of advice from people not with students debt so it’s always been a little frustrating 😔💦

This work IS possible, but it was a lot of work to get myself here! And it’s still a constant dance of figuring out new things (which is equally exciting and a bit stressful) ^ w ^;;; 👏💖💖💖

ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?

IRL No, not that I'm aware of. I'm the only one in my immediate family (sans my father's side) not named after another member of our family. I do get my middle name from my mom's first name, though. (which, funny enough, wasn't her original first name. She went by her middle name much more than her first name, so she just had it legally changed lol) My Dad wanted to name me Gwendolyn and his mom wanted Bronwyn.

Online, I think it's pretty obvious where I get my name(s) from lol. Though, I don't think I've ever told the origins of Rosie. It was actually originally supposed to be like an adjective? Like "rosy cheeks" or whatever, but I spelt it the way one spells the name Rosie and it came first in my url, so I came to be known as Rosie.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?

Can't remember exactly? But I think I was crying over some video compilation of people reuniting with lost pets and I was thinking about my deceased cat, Jazzy. I have no idea why I was watching that video.

In elementary school my mom really wanted me to get into softball since she played it in college, so I was briefly on a tee-ball (kiddie baseball, hit using a tee) team and a softball team. I didn't like it very much, so I only played for a year or so. Then in middle school my mom wanted me to get into Volleyball, same story there. The one sport that stuck was Swimming, which my mom insisted I try because both of my older brothers had been on the team in the past. I ended up being really good at swimming, so I still swim competitively to this day.

DO YOU USE SARCASM?

Mostly only around my family or people I'm close with irl. I really don't want to come off as mean around strangers, either online or face-to-face.

How is the polycule looking these days? I’m poly and dating lots of people some of which I live with too and I always love to see other people living the life. I hope you’re all doing well!!!

Hey anon! Always happy to hear from other polyam people 💕

So I'm not sure when I would have last talked about my polycule so I'll just introduce them from the top.

Atm I live with two partners (one of whom is plural so in practice way more!) and I have two "external partners". The partners I live with are married, but otherwise none of my partners are currently dating anyone else, so in that sense I'm the ~glue~ of the polycule atm. Or maybe I'm just a hoe 😘😏 Aside from these guys, we got some honorary members who are "only" friends (whatever the hell that means), who are also important members of my found family.

I've used the original animal designations from our old @welcome-to-the-petting-zoo podcast.

Quinn (Cat) is all of me (Glitch).

Dae (Hound) refers to the collective formerly referred to as Fox and Trashpanda. Hound and I are engaged. These days I am more or less dating all of Hound. They are doing well. He's been taking T for about a year and he's doing pretty good, he got approved for disability pension which has given some much needed space to heal by doing his own shit. He spends a lot of time zooming up and down the countryside on his scooter 'Lucky', tattooing himself and others, and doing insanely creative awesome crafts and art projects. Hound still struggles with amnesia, and he's still a fundamentally plural person, but the strong dissociative+amnesiac barriers between system members have loosened up, making for a more integrated, yet more plural self-experience. These days a lot of his day to day difficulties come down to physical pain and exhaustion. We are currently also working towards getting him citizenship!

Moose who is legally married to Hound, and who lives with me and Hound, recently finished his education as an embedded software engineer (with a focus on robots!). He's looking for a job atm and even though that process is stressful, he's still doing a lot better from being done with uni, which was frankly a very stressful environment. So he's having a total glow-up 💕

Bear finished their education in psychology a while before me and struggled to find employment, esp. because they weren't necessarily able to work full-time - they recently got approved for "flex-job" which means they can have a 10-20 h job and get paid as if working full-time on that job. They juuuust found employment from next week, so three cheers for Bear!! 🥳🥳🥳

Bat (@the-life-of-bat )has become sooo strong since we managed to get her gender affirming surgery about ... three years ago?! Time sure flies. Like yeah, girl is still traumatized and disabled/mentally ill and whatnot. But her resilience grows by the day, and she is often found hyperfocusing on a most recent project and pulling off insane feats! Also, she's a weeb now. AND I'm old enough not to cringe at someone's genuine joy. Be proud of me! 💪🌈

Lynx and Kat are both close friends/part of the family. I don't know how Lynx feels about me discussing her situation so I won't go into detail, and much more info on Kat can be found over at her blog @compassionatereminders (or check out @2000sgirly where she is currently having a joyful fixation on early 2000s girly pop culture! Even if it's not your thing, her enthusiasm is contagious. )

Overall, we are good. There's hardships to be dealt with, and there probably always will be. Hound's mum is in the process of dying from a fairly aggressive degenerative illness, the immigration laws and psychiatric gatekeeping are tripping people up, I'm struggling to find my place on the "job market", disability and chronic illness will always be a part of all of our lives. But there's also a lot of joy and love and good tidings. And many things that slowly improve and expand and heal and grow.

I'm happy to have so much love in my life, and I'm proud of my little family of delightful freaks and misfits.

💞 VI - The Lovers : Sympathetic relationships, sexuality, self-discovery, solidification of personal beliefs, facing moral choices.

sympathetic relationships: kit is actually a very sympathetic person; it's something he prides himself on!! over the time skip, he aggressively takes part in activist movements, such as ones to reform the government and lgbt rights groups.

sexuality: as stated above, kit is a pretty active member of the lgbt community in the fairy tail universe. he's bi, and he's really proud of that. he never really had the time to come out until he was about fourteen, but he's known pretty much his whole life.

self-discovery: kit loves discovering new things about himself, especially stuff he didn't get to try when he was in the tower. for instance, his love of baking, something he realized when he was a teenager! it's his favorite hobby, he's never looked back and he does it all the time.

solidification of personal beliefs: this is so important bc kit has always and will always be very firmly rooted in his beliefs. when something is wrong, when he can feel it in his gut, he sticks with that feeling and follows it all the way.

facing moral choices: kit is a very interesting character bc he's a good person, but he still dabbles in moral grayness. for example, he let a criminal get away - yes, it was for the sake of a civilian, but also bc he wanted to see him get away. he loves his job and he loves to help people, but he thinks the people sanctioning him are untrustworthy and so he rebels against them. if there is a rule that doesn't sit right with him, he doesn't follow it. he for sure has his own moral code that he struggles with all the time.

💪 XI - Strength : Soft and deliberate control, guidance and influence, compassion, enduring, reliability.

soft and deliberate control: he isn't a very controlling person, but when he does have to lead, everything he does is very intentional and well thought out. when he has control of a situation, everything is just that: soft and deliberate.

guidance and influence: kit has had a lot of great influences in his life, but none so more than his older sister, weaver. she's really taken care of him most of their lives, and so wherever she goes, he will follow. when she found him, he was a starving, raving escapee, and she shaped him into the most beautiful person. she's the best guidance he could have possibly asked for.

compassion: he feels compassion deeply and wholly. if someone is hurt or upset, he does his best to help them the best he can. when wendy loses her guild for example, he is there to watch out for her, consoling her.

enduring: kit relates to this word in a lot of ways, but the one that sticks out most is his love for macbeth. he searched for him for years, looking everywhere he possibly could, and even when they meet again and macbeth pushes him away, he still loves him. if that love isn't enduring idk what is DLNFNKLFNLKF

reliability: actually kit's very reliable!! he's always there to help his friends, cheer them on, and give them whatever they need from him. especially for his best friend, lyon! whenever lyon asks him to accompany him on a mission or even just come cheer him up, kit drops everything for him.

🌙 XVIII - The Moon : Fear, illusions, fantasies, delving into the imaginary, loss of direction.

fear: kit has a lot of fears, but he tends to repress them a lot. he doesn't like to burden other people with bad feelings; he thinks it's his own responsibility to bare. that being said, he's afraid of jellal, of losing his friends and family, and of being confined to one place.

illusions: funnily enough this is macbeth's magic DLNKFNKLFN. because of that, kit tends to try to figure out the difference between illusion and reality quickly, if he suspects something is wrong. he looks for macbeth's weak points - that he can't produce two illusions at once. this is something he'll often do when he lucid dreams.

fantasies: tbh kit's fantasy is simple: to live in a cottage with macbeth next to his sister and grow old there. keep going on missions, living his life, but that's really all!

delving into the imaginary: his magic teeters on the edge of imaginary and fantastical. kit deals in game magic, which means that he can control the rules of the fight based on the rules of games! so as long as the rules are fair, kit can set simple or even complex rules that will restrict his opponent's combat style. he has to be imaginative to come up with the rules and make sure they'll help him!!

loss of direction: while living at lamia scale, kit is happy - that much is true. he loves his friends and family, and he wouldn't want to be anywhere else. that being said, without macbeth, a piece of him is always missing. he's called to go, to adventure, to find him. it's something that makes him feel lost pretty often.
