Hi! I’d like to start writing ATLA fanfiction, and I would like medicine to feature prominently. Your post on Chinese medicine was helpful, but there are still some questions I have and don’t know where to start looking.

I’m stumped on what to call pain-killers that “knock you out”. My mind keeps going to “milk of the poppy” from ASOIAF/GOT, but idk if that would be anachronistic? As a westerner, opiates naturally come to mind but I wonder if anything similar/ different was used across Asia. I’m also aware of the very damaging history of opiates in China by European imperialists, so idk if it’s inclusion in ATLA storytelling would be in bad taste? There’s also naming to consider…. Well, it’s just been on my mind!

Do you have any thoughts on this, or suggestions of things I could look into?

Yeah, I think it would be in poor taste to bring up opium-as-medicine in an Asian-inspired world.

As far as traditional Asian painkillers go, there's mafeisan (麻沸散). About 1800 years ago, there was a Chinese physician named Hua Tuo (華佗). His claim to fame was being the first person in China to use an anesthetic during surgery. The concoction he came up with was rice wine boiled with mafeisan, literally meaning "hemp boiling powder". Despite its name, the exact ingredients of mafeisan are unknown and the recipe for it basically died with Hua Tuo. Being a nearly 2000 year old drug composed of mysterious herbs, mafeisan has a mythic quality that (I think) fits the ATLA-world nicely.

A few ingredients that some TCM specialists believe made up mafeisan include hashish, datura flower, aconite root, rhododendron flower (Chinese azalea), and/or jasmine root.

In any case, I can imagine Iroh being familiar with mafeisan. Given how much time he spent in the military, he likely learned a few things from the battlefield physicians. Perhaps his fascination with tea stems from his skills in boiling mafeisan and other tea-like medicines.

I spent a lot of last week processing bags of elderflower, which absolutely cover the area I live.

Flowers were boiled in a strong sugar solution and then sealed in sterilised jars for the syrup - this will be shelf stable for a couple of years.

For the infused gin, flowers were soaked in gin for 48 hours then bottled in the clean jars - the alcohol will be enough to kill off any bugs.

I used a combination of sun-drying and my airfryer to dehydrate the flowers (these will be used for cough remedies in the winter) - there was no noticeable difference between the two methods.

I've also got some elderflower champagne fermenting, which is my first experiment in brewing alcohol. I've already had to discard one bottle which got contaminated (visible mould), but the other two look good and should be ready to be drunk in a few days!

okay for your entertainment, chani and i were brainstorming earlier and here's a scenario we crafted: AU where mickey is a florist, across the street from his little flower shop a craft brewery moves in and opens up a bar and restaurant. ian is a bartender who gets a job at the new bar. one day before opening, his employers send him out to buy some fresh flowers for the tables in the restaurant. ian naturally wanders into the little shop right across the street and meets mickey for the first time. mickey is intrigued by the sweet friendly redheaded bartender so he starts going over to get a beer at the bar after he closes up shop every evening. ian is enamored with the rough-around-the-edges dark-haired florist, so he volunteers every chance he gets to go buy fresh flowers for the restaurant tables for the excuse to keep going into mickeys shop.

uuhhhmm...yeah and then eventually they bang. ✨🌸🍺✨

deanna deanna deannaaaa! i love this so fucking much! i also love the little twist of mickey being the florist and ian being the bartender! i feel like typically you'd see them the other way around. but mickey? arranging little bouquets and cutting flower stems?! yes please!

imagine ian going over to get flowers and mickey telling him that his favorite flowers are currently in bloom? "those blue ones over there, they're gorgeous." ian being immediately smitten by this rough tattooed guy showing him lilies. and ian's never given any thought to what his favorite flowers may be, but he can't deny that they're beautiful. blue. bright. breathtaking. like mickey's eyes. he ends up buying a bunch of them, completely going over budget, and bringing them into the bar. thinking on the way that they might look out of place until he sets them down. seeing, realizing, that they fit right in.

mickey coming in every night and pausing a bit by the door. just looking at the bartender expertly mixing and pouring drinks. smiling that megawatt smile at his customers. and, yea, of course they're fawning over him. those arms flexing as he pumps the shaker and bops his head to the music. goddamn! he strides over and hops on a stool down the bar, near the end, next to a vase of lilies. ian catching a glimpse and that smile he's been sporting grows wider. reaching his eyes in a way that's intoxicating. how can mickey possibly look away? so, he gives him a little nod, his face reflecting a matching grin. goofy and smitten.

ian finishing serving his customer and giving the bar a little rap. a *tap tap* with his knuckles. his coworker looking over and shooting an endeared eyeroll in his direction. they switch places. ian immediately going to station himself near mickey. pouring a beer along the way - he knows what mickey likes now. strolling, handing it over with a wink and a twinkle in his eyes.

they stand there for a few beats, not saying a word. unable to look away from each other. and then:

"the flowers look good, man."

"yea, they do. they brighten up the place."

not once looking away. and they both feel it. the pull. the magnetism.

yea.

this is the start. this is it.

their wedding will be full of lilies.

florist mickey saving fresh flowers for ian, because he knows that he's going to come in looking for a fresh batch for the bar. making sure that he gathers the brightest ones. dahlias this time around. he picks the most pigmented ones, trims the stems, picks off any drying leaves, and sorts them into little bouquets. delicately tying them together, ready for the hand off.

and he'll act like "psshh gallagher" it's not big deal. "psshh gallagher" our supplier brings them to us like that. "psshh gallagher" don't look at that shipment that's about to arrive of flowers very much not sorted in intricate arrangements.

but ian will know. he'll know and he'll swoon and he'll smile that big smile of his and give him a smitten "thanks, mick!" little hearts floating above his head.

anyway, have you thought about that lately?

skdjaslkdjasldj julissa 😭😭😭 i have thought about florist mickey every single day. i have a sketch burning a hole in my...well i dont keep it in my pocket..but theres a picture of it on my phone which i *do* keep in my pocket so YES yeah i got a sketch burning a hole in my pocket and i keep thinking about him in his little shop, how colorful it is but also how the backdrop to all those pops of color would be so overwhelmingly green. (mickey loves green) and i think about how the air in his shop would probably be a bit humid, and how it would smell floral but also earthy. and ian probably loves that smell. its pleasant and a bit of a novelty living in the city but he also quickly forms an association with it to mickey. maybe when mickey heads over to the bar after closing up shop ian can just barely smell it on him when he first walks in and sits down? he probably looks forward to the faint little gust of scent every day and doesnt even realize it at first. i've thought a little about bartender ian too. the bar is all warm tones and lots of wood. he perpetually has a little bar towel over his shoulder. he's so charming with the bar patrons, everyone loves him. mickey watches him have dozens of easy breezy friendly micro-conversations with people every night and is in awe that ian never seems to get tired of it. which is especially fascinating to mickey who finds the customer-facing part of his job to be generally unpleasant more often than not. mickey doesnt really know how it happened so fast but he went from having a quick beer and a little chit-chat with ian every night to actually just hanging out in his spot (when did he stake a claim to his own spot??) at the bar, slowly nursing a couple beers, letting ian orbit him all night. watching each other while they both internally puzzle out how much attention they can actually pay to the other while still maintaining a little bit of dignity. (this ship has sailed and the poor idiots dont even know it). so yeah uhuh yup yes i uhm..i have been Thinking 🙃
