When you’re trying to take a pic of your #currentlyreading pile from your sickbed and you end up having to take two pics - is THAT too many books? 😂 Here’s what I’m reading this week! I’m still making my way through The Woman In White (although I never want it to end!), Voyager in my journey through the Outlander series, Fairy Tale with the #keeperofking bookclub, The Return Of The Native and Life After Life the latter two of which are my current re-reads. I’m at chapter 4 in my audiobook - Murder - The Biography and still enjoying Light Rains Must Fall, a buddy read until Feb 2023 with Mr B. New reads include: Klara And The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, starting this tonight with #bitcrackbookclub The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - buddy reading with lots of lovely bookstagrammers and I’m adoring it so far. Nearly 200 pages in. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari- This is my current nonfiction read. I got to hear him speak in Foyles many years ago and still haven’t read his book! 🙈 A Good Man Is Hard To Find by Flannery O’Connor - this is a book of short stories and I’m starting it tonight as part of my reading challenge from @keeperofpages for book with an ugly front cover 🫣 No offence meant!! The First Woman by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi - reading this with bestie @emmasbookishcorner and we’re having our first chat tonight! About a third of the way through. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell - another buddy reads with lots of bookstagrammers and my first ever Gaskell! Two thirds of the way through. What are you currently reading? Have you read any of these? Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #sapiensabriefhistoryofhumankind #yuvalnoahharari #fairytale #stephenking #klaraandthesun #kazuoishiguro #thecountofmontecristo #alexandredumas #thewomaninwhite #wilkiecollins #agoodmanishardtofind #flanneryoconnor #northandsouth #elizabethgaskell #thefirstwoman #jennifernansubugamakumbi #thereturnofthenative #thomashardy #lifeafterlife #kateatkinson #voyager #dianagabaldon #murderthebiography #katemorgan https://www.instagram.com/p/ClCNODSLidM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“When I was six I had a chicken that walked backward and was in the Pathe News. I was in it too with the chicken. I was just there to assist the chicken but it was the high point in my life. Everything since has been anticlimax.” - Flannery O’Connor

What people don’t realise, is how much Christianity costs. They think faith is a big electric blanket, when of course it is the cross.

“Writing a novel is a terrible experience, during which the hair often falls out and the teeth decay.” — Flannery O’Connor ✍🏻 Dear lovelies: Here I am at the end of my writing day with my husband (world’s best editor) and what’s left of my brain. “Everywhere I go I'm asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a best-seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher... Art never responds to the wish to make it democratic; it is not for everybody; it is only for those who are willing to undergo the effort needed to understand it.” Though she’s most recognized for her brilliant short stories, the two novels she wrote are staggeringly, gut-punchingly good. #flanneryoconnor #american #shortstorywriter #novelist #essayist #southerngothic #goat #deathanniversary #practicedying (at Highland Square, Akron) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0tE66xB_xi/?igshid=tmm0j3vm3bja

Sex is everywhere: books, movies, television shows, music… It is even there when we fail to notice its presence. But most of the time sex is pretty impossible to miss. The only thing that is almost as abundant in the world as sex is criticism over how abundant sex is in the world. I was listening to Ariana Grande’s music in the car one day and my boyfriend would not stop making comments about how all she sang about was sex. I pointed out to him that the television shows he had half-forced me to watch, the movies he had dragged me to the theater to see and the books he had raved about for days on end were also mostly about sex. But it’s really not that one-dimensional. Most of the time, sex is much more than just… well… sex.
This week I read the short story Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor and, in classic O’Connor fashion, it was loaded with sexual innuendos. Mrs. Hopewell’s afternoon is interrupted when a man named Manley Pointer shows up at her door to sell Bibles. He then charms Mrs. Hopewell’s daughter, Hulga, formerly named Joy, who has a wooden leg and a Ph.D. in philosophy. The irony here is so delicious it is something only O’Connor could concoct. And don’t even get me started on the wooden leg… To get to the bottom of this story, you need, first of all, a sense of humor, but also the ability to see beyond the sexual innuendos to the wider message O’Connor is trying to convey.
At the end of the story, Hulga and Manley Pointer sneak into a barn to be alone. This is when Manley admits that he is a thief and has believed in nothing his whole life. He proceeds to steal Hulga’s glasses and wooden leg, leaving her in the barn, unable to leave. So, what is the moral of the story? Don’t sneak into a barn to have sex with a person you just met? That is definitely part of it. You should stay as far away as possible from shady barns and Manley Pointers. But I think there is more to it than that. Upon having her ability to see and walk stolen from her, Hulga receives a rough wake up call. Her view not only of the world but of herself has always been distorted. But becoming disabled may actually enable Hulga to see the Joy that still lives inside of her.
Next time you see sex in a book, movie, television show or hear it in music, don’t just avert your eyes and say, “here we go again, another sex scene.” Sex is such a central part of being human that 99.9% of the time it is being used to convey some truth about humanity. Seeing it as “just sex” will prevent you from seeing that truth. And you might even get a couple giggles in the process.
