Protector of the Small Characters: Are they queer?
Kel: Yes, aro-ace. Owen: I love him, but straight. The Chamber of the Ordeal: Gay, but only when Joren is there because Joren is homophobic. That is how he died. Otherwise, it's a room with no sexuality. Cleon: Straight, god help him. Merric: Straight. Seaver: Straight. Neal: Straight, but if a person he was dating came out as non-binary, he'd go with it and they'd be happy together. He'd want to talk about Judith Butler's "Gender Trouble" all the time, which would be super annoying. Roald: Straight. Shinkokami: Straight. Yukimi: Straight. Wyldon: Straight. Joren: Straight. Garvey: Straight. Lalasa: God, finally. Lesbian.

Last 2 Wyldon thoughts before I get distracted by Wild Magic.
There's a subtle little detail about how Wyldon is written at the end of First Test that I really like.
Wyldon obviously has Some Ideas that he needs to un-have. That's not in question. But he really gives himself away when he says to Kel at the end, that he's going to talk to Kel "as he would to his daughters".
Wyldon has 4 daughters and no sons. So even though he's trained pages for years and knows exactly how hard and dangerous being a knight is, he's never had to send a child to do that. Piers and Ilane know what they're in for with Kel, she has knight brothers. But Wyldon has, absolutely, 100% gone "sending my kid to do this would make me uncomfortable and I can't tell the difference between my feelings and rational thought".
Does this excuse him at all? No. Is it a great detail? Yes.
Incidentally, when I hoped on Tortall-pedia to check the number of kids Wyldon has I discovered that apparently one of his daughters (who are presumably at home trying to cut off his access to Tortallan Fox News during First Test) marries OWEN.
This is deeply hilarious to me because... Owen is Like That, and Wyldon is Like That... and then I thought about it a bit more and decided that they will probably actually get on alarmingly well and baffle everyone. This makes me smile.

“Cleon sends me for papers, but someone else traps a first-year in a corner and keeps making him do stupid tasks. He’ll maybe hit the first-year to smarten him when the first year slows down- and that is dead wrong. If we take this as pages, what about when we are knights? Do we say, Oh, now I’m going to be nice to the weak and small? Or do we do as we learned when we were pages?” She stopped, breathing hard. It was the longest speech she’d ever made. “I don’t mean to lecture. You can laugh and say I’m a silly girl- but when I see anyone big pick on someone small, well, there’s going to be a fight.”- First Test, Tamora Pierce

Does anyone know what happened with the Tamora Pierce / Protector of the Small / First Test graphic novel adaptation?
They announced in 2019, with an estimated release of 2021... but you know... it’s 2023. Things happen, and my HOPE is it wasn’t scrapped from all the Covid etc (like her potential live action thing.)
I couldn’t find any details through my snooping, but maybe one of y’all have heard something?

“her nose was still unbroken”
Did Tamora forget that Kel broke her nose in First Test during her first fight with Joren & co? Or is Duke Baird just that good of a healer?

Alanna the Lioness, the King's Champion, could hardly contain her glee. Baron Piers of Mindelan had written to King Jonathan to say that his daughter wished to be a page. Alanna fought to sit still as she watched Wyldon of Cavall, the royal training master, read the baron's letter. Seated across his desk from them, the king watched the training master as sharply as his Champion did. Lord Wyldon was known for his dislike of female warriors.
