Bỗng dưng đêm bão tràn về, giữa cơn sốt mơ màng thì nhớ đến chị Thuỷ. Cái hồi ấy tôi chỉ mười sáu tuổi, còn chị Th đã gần bốn mươi, ít học, đơn giản và hoạt bát vô cùng, là kiểu người có thể gắn bó với một nơi làm việc đến hai mươi năm, nhiều bạn bè và nồng nhiệt. Những đêm tôi sang nhà chơi, ngủ trên giường, sau vách ngăn là bộ sô pha cũ, tôi nghe tiếng ho suốt đêm, bảo hút thuốc ít thôi mà chị Th vẫn cười vang vang rồi trả lời vọng vào rằng: “ Chị biết lắm mà bỏ không được đó chứ “. Tóc tôi khi ấy thật dài, lúc rỗi chị Th thường mua chiếc lược nhỏ về tết tóc cho tôi song ngắm nghía rất lâu….

Còn nhớ buổi tối bốn năm sau, tôi vô tình nhìn thấy số điện thoại cũ trong mảnh giấy kẹt trên ngăn tủ. Bấm gọi và trò chuyện cùng chị thật lâu, chị kể rằng vẫn làm nơi cũ, vẫn ở căn nhà thuê như trước. Đoạn chị hỏi nhiều năm trôi qua em đã quên chuyện xưa chưa, chị thì luôn nhớ, chị nói hồi ấy khi người chị yêu thương và hi sinh rất nhiều vừa rời đi thì tôi xuất hiện: “ Cảm thấy may mắn khi gặp em, chị từng yêu em đó, yêu em giống yêu một đứa trẻ, thắt tóc cho em, chăm sóc em, nhìn thấy em sống vui vẻ, tình cảm lạ lùng như thế giúp chị vơi bớt khổ sở biết bao nhiêu “

Tình yêu ấy không phải là bất cứ tình yêu nào mà người ta nghĩ đến đâu, tôi chắc rằng như thế. Chị Th chưa từng yêu tôi, mà yêu chính cảm giác được an ủi trong tâm hồn. Còn tôi khi ấy chỉ là đứa trẻ sống hồ hởi và hồn nhiên. Cuộc đời chúng ta tồn tại những hình dáng thật kì lạ. Hôm nay nhớ đến bởi nhiều năm sau này, tôi không còn nhìn thấy ai phải mang đời sống khổ sở cùng trái tim tổn thương mà vẫn lạc quan phi thường như thế nữa

Chúng tôi mất liên lạc rất lâu rồi. Ấy là việc tốt. Vì ở cuộc gọi cuối cùng chị Th vẫn đốt thuốc rồi ho nhiều, khi tôi nhắc thì chị bảo: “ Chị không sợ chết đâu, nhưng chị sợ và ghét chuyện em nhìn thấy chị già đi lắm, năm nay chị bốn mươi mốt rồi “. Một người nuông chiều tôi như thế, tôi vứt mảnh giấy ghi số điện thoại kia đi, để lần này đến lượt tôi nuông chiều chị vậy, giữ cho người trẻ mãi theo ý người mong….

Each letter of this phrase was hand-cut from pressed maple leaves and hung on hemp twine to create a conceptual art installation. These images were shot in spring of 2016 in Fort Collins, Colorado. This image expresses a unique passage of time since I collected fallen autumn maple leaves to create the piece, then installed it in flowering quince the next spring.
