Over 5,400 artworks from 75 countries participated in the Art Renewal Center (ARC)’s International ARC Salon Competition, the largest representational art competition in the world. This month, an exhibition of 95 winning and top ranking works of 21st Century Realism will be on view at Sotheby’s New York from July 14 – July 24. Sixty of the works will be on offer in an online benefit auction hosted on sothebys.com, open for bidding throughout the exhibition dates. Although open to the public on July 14, the “Public Opening” event, with artist meet and greet, will be held on July 15, from 11am – 3pm, free to the public and no RSVPs required.

There is something really compelling when a painting works, when the brush marks fall into place, when every touch is the right one. Conversely when the painting is not right when marks have not found their correct position when the momentum and excitement had led you astray, it get under your skin, niggles at you like an itch you can't scratch. One hour may not seem like very much time But if one is very focused, prepares the space, lays out some fresh colour then it might be all you need to set the thing right, to realign, redraw and rethink. As I ponder the use of time I am also brought to the strark conclusion (as I continue with my assessments) that some of my students have been really good at using their time, have carried out the balancing act of work, making, printing, research, writing and some have no idea how to use time at all and one wonders what they have been doing with their time. It was great to finally get in the studio yesterday and get some painting done. Saturday saw the last bits of skip filling, taking clothes and books to charity collection points, shopping, etc. So to have some time to just paint is always most welcome. I've been in limbo over week. Half of my students needed extensions, so the other half have been marked and the other half are going to be marked this week. This now coincides with a whole host of new marking, so this week I'm going to be stuck behind the computer screen solidly. But last week I was able to really get stuck in with some new student resources. A book on the history of prinr and a book on relief Printmaking. I've been making some new prints as well so that I can photograph the various stages. My plan is to update the little book I wrote 20 odd years ago. And I will do one on intaglio as well as litho and screen, but this will have to be put to one side to make way for the onslaught of marking. There is this huge to do list.... one sits in front of the computer screen in a mild state of panic, what has to be done, by when, have I forgotten something? So to finally get down to some painting is to also switch all that off. To focus only on how to move theses puddles of colour around and get them to fall in the right place. This is another 30 x 30cm oil on clear gesso primed MDF and a sneaky peak at the litho I've been working on which now has two colours.
