❝ sayana gan-bayar’s earliest memories consisted of her parents risking everything to defect from shu han to ravka in order to escape experimentation. while successful, sayana ends up falling into the darkling’s clutches, who carried out experiments of his own on the promising young etherealki. during these ventures, he forced her to bond with one of his shadow creations, a serpent-like creature he called smok he proved himself unable to control. the merger took a toll on her proficiency as a squaller, but granted her a curse like power to shape-shift into and summon the shadow serpent’s abilities at will. during the darkling’s battle against alina starkov in the fold, sayana is able to escape with her life and is smuggled onto a ship run by the infamous, sturmhond. upon revealing herself to be a trained squaller, the privateer welcomes her into his ranks in return for her services. what begins as the liberating adventure of a lifetime quickly takes a step back when she once again crosses paths with the sun summoner. secrets are revealed, old wounds resurface, and sayana is forced to face her fate as the host of the ill-reputed shadow serpent... ❞
