1970 Pontiac Formula 400
1970 Pontiac Formula 400 – The Other Performance Firebird
The story behind the development of GM’s F-body ponycars has been well documented. When Ford’s groundbreaking Mustang debuted in 1964, it tapped an emerging youth market that was hungry for a new type of car geared specifically to them. GM misjudged the public’s response to the Mustang and then scrambled to develop a similar style car after witnessing Ford’s unprecedented first model year sales success. Chevrolet was the lead division in engineering the F-body, and Pontiac grudgingly accepted the platform for their use in March 1966, only after GM management turned down PMD General Manager John DeLorean’s proposal for his own Mustang fighter.
Tumblr media
Pontiac didn’t have much time to transform the Firebird from its Camaro configuration before releasing it in February 1967. Their design and engineering lead time was significantly reduced and consequently, the Firebird was forced to use quite a bit of Camaro sheetmetal and other components. Competition between Pontiac and Chevrolet was intense, and having to use the other division’s engineering and design was a bitter pill for DeLorean’s maverick staff to swallow.
The circumstances surrounding the second generation Firebird were another story. Pontiac actually began working on their second generation just as the first Firebirds were hitting dealer showrooms. From design to engineering, Pontiac dominated the divisional rivalry, and this time around the Firebird would be all Pontiac from roof to road. There was little carried over to the second generation with the exception of the Trans Am nameplate and basic engine configurations. The suspension was tuned for more responsive handling with little compromise to ride comfort. Computer aided engineering chose the proper front and rear spring deflection rates predicated on model and usage. Stabilizer bars were used front and rear and the steering box was mounted ahead of the front axle for better response.
Tumblr media
The sexy new body was rooted in GM styling chief Bill Mitchell’s infatuation with Italian sports car design. GM chose heavily from the rounded shapes of Ferrari and Maserati, and it showed in the smooth flow of fender lines, the curved window glass and raked windshield. One remarkable difference from pervious GM designs was the lack of a quarter window. Instead, the doors were lengthened to take up a larger portion of the quarter. The massive doors were heavy, however the side appearance was cleaner and far sportier. A lift bar door handle added to the smooth side look. Chrome was distinctively absent. The Native American-inspired Firebird emblem was on the decklid and the nose of all but base model cars.
Up front, the twin nostril grille and single headlamps provided a clean appearance, thanks to the use of Endura to create a bumper-less front end with a valance that cleanly rolled beneath the grille with large cross hair parking lamps mounted in the lower corners of the valance. At the rear, the smooth tumble home enhanced the Firebirds fuselage shape. The tail was flat and filled with twin tail lamps that met the quarter panel’s round rear profile. A recessed tag housing, thin blade chrome rear bumper, and rounded lower valance completed the rear end’s clean look.
Tumblr media
Inside, the Firebird’s wide, expansive dash housed the instrument panel consisting of three center nacelles for gauges, with smaller gauges at the right and room for the heater controls and additional switches and knobs. Directly below the center of the dash was another stack that contained the radio and ashtray. Even the base interior was sumptuous, with Pontiac’s indestructible Morrokide vinyl upholstery covering the bucket seats and door panels. The quarter trim panels and headliner were composed of molded polymeric material that provided a smooth surface and absorbed sound.
The 1970 Pontiac line up was composed of the base Firebird with 250 cid six, the mid range, 350 cid Espirit, the 400 cid Formula 400, and the 400 cid Ram Air Trans Am. Of the four, perhaps the most intriguing was the Formula 400. While the Trans Am was loaded with visuals like a shaker hood, fender mounted air extractors, wild front air spoiler, rear wheel opening air spoilers, and wide center stripe, the Formula had none of these. For those who preferred to have a muscular pony car sans the exterior adornments, the Formula 400 was just the ticket. Outside, the only difference between the mild mannered Espirit and the Formula was a special fiberglass hood that sported a pair of front reaching hood scoops (first considered for the Trans Am), sport style dual outside mirrors, and a pair of Formula 400 scripts below the Firebird nameplate on the fenders.
Under the sheetmetal, however, is where the $3,440 Formula’s credentials lay. Standard engine was the 400 cid V8 which generated 330 horsepower @ 4800rpm and 430 lbs.-ft. torque @ 3000rpm. Car & Driver tested a Formula 400 with this engine and automatic transmission and recorded a 0-60 acceleration time of 6.4 seconds and quarter mile performance of 14.7 seconds at 98.9mph.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The optional engine was the Ram Air III V8, which produced 345 horsepower @ 5000rpm and 430 lbs.-ft. torque @ 3400rpm, thanks in part to a higher compression and a more aggressive camshaft profile. While Pontiac offered a 370 horsepower Ram Air IV, it never found its way into a Formula 400. On the Ram Air III equipped Formulas, the hood scoops were opened and a pair of rubber “boots” were fitted to the hood’s underside. They snugged up to holes in the air cleaner snorkels and fed cold outside air to the Rochester Quadra Jet carburetor. Subtle “RAM AIR” decals were affixed to the outboard sides of the hood scoops. The Formula’s 400 engine was dressed up with chromed air cleaner lid and valve covers. Dual exhausts with chrome tips were also standard.
Standard transmission was the M13, a heavy duty Dearborn three-speed manual box. A pair of Muncie four speeds was offered optionally, the wide ratio M20 and close ratio M21. Also optional was the M40 three-speed Turbo Hydra Matic transmission. A 3.55:1 rear axle ratio was standard, while air conditioned models received 3.31:1 ratios. Optional ratios were 3.07:1 and 3.73:1.
Tumblr media
The Formula received a firmer suspension with 300-pounds/inch deflection in the front springs and 103 pounds/inch in the rear. The front stabilizer measured 1.125 inches in the front and the rear bar was .620 inches with firm control shocks mounted at all four corners. Front disc brakes were standard with rear drums. Standard tires were F70 x 14 on six-inch steel rims. The Trans Am’s tighter suspension was offered optionally. It consisted of 300 pounds/inch front and 126 pounds/inch springs in the rear, 1.250 inch stabilizer bar at the front, and fat .875 inch bar aft. Wider F60x 15 Polyglas tires mounted on 15 x 7 Rally II wheels without trim rings rounded out the package. Add the variable ratio power steering and power brakes and the Formula responded right now! to steering input and could dive deeper into corners and come out faster. Its only competition was big brother Trans Am and the Corvette.
Inside, the Formula’s instrument panel was faced in a wood grained appliqué. Optional was a Rally Gauge that placed an 8000-rpm tach in the left housing along with a small analog clock. In the smaller center housing was the engine temperature and oil pressure gauges. The right housing contained the 160mph speedometer with the smaller fuel gauge and voltmeter to the far right. Two consoles were offered, one between the front buckets that contained the transmission shifter, the other between the optional rear buckets.
Tumblr media
Of the 7,708 Formula 400s produced in 1970, 2,777 were equipped with manual transmissions. Exactly 4,931 were fitted with the M40 automatic transmission. One of those M40 equipped Formulas is owned by Jack Nichols of Orlando, Fla. Jack performed a complete restoration on the Formula several years ago, bringing it back to correct factory standards. The Atoll Blue Formula is fitted with the optional Ram Air engine, open scoops and underhood induction system. Inside, the tan Morrokide interior features console, optional three-spoke Formula steering wheel with padded rim, Rally gauges and air conditioning.

Ohh Arcee's a lambo I couldn't recognise what her alt mode was!! Really hoping next issue gives us a good look at it!
Yeah, lambos have a specific curve to them other luxury/sports car brands don't use and that design has stayed pretty consistent through the years, which is how I recognized the alt mode. (Cliffjumper is possibly a 90s era Pontiac Firebird?)
Tumblr media
As you can see, fender to trunk is all one curve!
They're not my favorite luxury/sports car design, but it's a pretty slick and cool choice for Arcee! I'm excited to see more of it!

Squier Modding or Buying A New Guitar
Squier Modding or Buying A New Guitar I am a self produced artist and I also mix and engineer for myself and I like playing with my instruments too but I’m also tryna find a unique sound to my music but also not spend crazy amounts of money unless it’s necessary.I’m tryna find a way to find my sound and I’m thinking of modding my one and only electric guitar that I have rn and which it’s also my first guitar that I’ve been using for like three years which is a SquierBut I don’t know if I should mod it or buy a new guitar with an already set and distinct sound to itself. If I was to buy a new guitar it would be between an Epiphone Firebird, A Fender Stratocaster, or a Jagstang. (Assume that I would buy most of these used)If I was too mod my Squier I would change the tuners to some gotoh tuners, a gotoh 510 bridge or vegatram (both are floating bridges), change the chrome and silver parts to gold. The pickups would go something like this, a Les Paul humbucker at the neck pickup, a reverse lipstick tele pickup in the middle, and a mini humbucker on the bridge pickup. If I have to settle between having a humbucker on both neck and bridge or mini humbucker in neck and bridge I would choose the mini humbucker if I can’t have both separate pickups. The pickups would be gold.I’m trying to figure out which would be worth the money and time, but im also tryna have some flair n style n uniqueness to my sound to my production in music and I don’t know if changing the parts would do me any good and save me some time to buying and going through new guitars or if I should just switch guitars and just have 2 guitars on standby whenever I want to change between smooth or rocky. The options are modding my squier or buying a new one please give me some recommendations on what I could do to find a unique sound. And give me some recommendations on parts if your for the modding. Guitar Geek Corner
Welcome to guitar geek corner. This is a new thing where I share music triva and gear talk.
Today's Artist:
S.R.V.
Powerhouse Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan. From 1983 to 1990, Stevie Ray was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 at age 35 cut short a brilliant career in blues and American rock & roll just as he was on the brink of superstardom.
Tumblr media
Stevie was known for playing a Fender Stratocaster with a sketchy history. His favorite and signature guitar, which he named "number one" was believed to be a 1959 body which had been modified with a 1961 D shaped neck and a odd period with the fretboard wood being Pau Fero instead of the more traditional Rosewood or Maple slab fretboard material which had the norm coming out of the Fullerton, California factory.
Tumblr media
Through the years due to his vicious and relentless playing style the guitar began to morph into its characteristic battle worn patina.
Watch this clip of Stevie Live at the El Mocombo
In Toronto.
youtube
Stevie played many guitars throughout his career. Mostly various types of Stratocasters. Occasionally you would see him with a Gibson ES-335, Les Paul or an Epiphone Riviera.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the most interesting weapon in his guitarsenal if you will, is the Gibson Firebird.
Used in several live shows this is the guitar recorded almost as much as number one.
Tumblr media
Stevie is pictured here playing his 1964 Firebird at Boston Street Market in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1982, at an early Double Trouble show. The guitar was customised to suit his playing.
This man had such an impact on me. His music is thunderous and powerful and yet he is such a gentle spirit. Stevie you will never be forgotten thank you for everything you gave us in your short time on this planet. Just how much has Stevie influenced my life?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You tell me...
If you like music and guitar geek history give this a reblog or a like. If I get enough likes I'll make this a regular thing.

People are horrible it's in there pestering him and saying all sorts of stuff you can't do that with this car and things like that and they don't know what they're talking about and they're going to get a rude lesson because they're very rude people saying you can't do anything and we'll have anything it's just a pipe dream and they're losing everything and I'm going to be dead for them to stop doing this just like you said it might happen.
You can see the lines match and the window matches parsley and when you put in the panel you put a panel that goes over the window a little and the rear end is very much different but we have seen people concrete and it is by making the trunk lid integral with the panels that go on the sides and the way you do that is the whole thing opens off of hinge it is put on the inside of your roof and we do have mounting kits and it does go through your roof it's not real hard to put on and the roofing system is not that complicated on these cars and it opens all the way up just like a supercar kind of looks like one when it's opened you don't know what he's doing is putting groceries in there and stuff. It has to be this one cuz the front end doesn't go down on the other ones and it's about the same length it's only about it's a few inches longer not but you can change that with the fairing and it does do that and it would be the rounded wide body look really it's a big change but here's why and I I'm going to put the stats out and it's when you use our kit on this particular car this is a V8 2007 Pontiac firebird and it is a special but not not the top of the line and Diesel tons of these it's one of the top sellers of all time for firebird and it out sold the Camaro
STATS ON PANTERA FIREBIRD
*0 to 60 this includes the new exhaust that's DOT approved and top end 3.2 seconds
*quarter mile this is about 6.9 seconds
*top speed 970 mph and we will have to include a limiter it's your duty to put it on there
The kid would include everything it would have to be the color of your car unless you request a different color cuz you're going to use paint. A lot of people want to use the day Tomaso colors and we think that's nice and very good we will offer it but we will say that you should tell us your color of your car if you're going to keep the car you're going to keep the interior you're going to keep the drivetrain and the engine the transmission the differential axles and suspension you need to change your tires and your rims to fit the kit and we tell you which tires and which rims or you can order them this is way the kit should be made and they want someone who will Warehouse it and sell it to your own and a few others or whatever you want just if we can sell millions that's fine this is a great kit this car goes 250 mph stock no it goes 180 and it's pitiful when you change it and we have a fairing on the front and it doesn't slow it down the reason why it goes so much faster one is it has about 300 horsepower when we give you the exhaust and the top end it increases it to 450 horsepower secondly when you remove the panels and the fenders and you have to work on the bumper you retain it but you move it the weight is reduced by about 350 pounds which isn't that much but the aerodynamics is completely different you would be astonished at how much faster it is and why it's a very odd thing and it's this exact car the the this wide body that we tested it goes very very fast it's unbelievable the weight difference is not that much and you don't affect your electronics and you don't change the wiring the top end does change from your fuel injection you're going to a different system no you're changing the fuel injection system completely but that doesn't really affect the air dynamics and it's a very odd thing we tested the day tomorrow we did a conversion kit to a day Tomaso from a firebird and it goes extremely fast and we believe these are the right numbers and we're going to put one together and see how fast it goes and the guys say they have one similar but they're looking it up and they're saying that the top end is about 870 miles per hour so everything else is pretty close 060 is like 3.9 seconds and it's because it's a V8 and the quarter mile is 6.9 seconds so they have one that's done like this I said no this one will be faster and it'll probably make up for the 870 would be the then above it'll be 980 mph and back to about 2.8 seconds so that's an estimate but really is very very fast by comparison it's not even the same ballpark we know why it's it's a few things about aerodynamics the tires and rims are terrible if you change those this car goes 250 miles an hour they they suck that that makes sense so we're going to publish

anyone else only draw those angular guitars/bass guitars over the ones that have a more organic shape because they’re easier to draw?
this is what I’m referring to
Tumblr media
it’s DIFFICULT to get the Organic shaped ones right. But the angular ones can be achieved with a ruler.
Btw feel free to mention if you actually play guitar alongside drawing

Time Capsule Or Restoration? '64 Chevy Impala Hits The Used Car Market Trying Great
Production noticed easiest cars to restore a slight dip to 270,907, however worth went up to a $5,828 starting worth. Although the grille was bumped again up, it was the small changes that have been touted.
Chevy decided to proceed manufacturing via 1957 with the only headlights until 1958 when they may produce all their cars with dual lights. Hence, the Chevy Impala was among the pontiac firebird many first to be designed and built with four headlights next to the grill. Several other cars were canceled, together with the Chevy Volt and Cruze, the Buick LaCrosse, and Cadillac XTS and CT6.
Every time the Impala has been discontinued, designers have discovered a way to revive it. This last generation, nonetheless, could probably be the adored automobile's final gasp. The car was also fashionable on the inside, with color shows and a display screen within the center console for navigation and smartphone integration. Three engine choices had been included with the 2014 model, with the three.6-liter V6 being essentially the most powerful engine at 303 horsepower. An SS trim providing returned in 2004 with a 240-horsepower V6 engine.
The 1964 Chevrolet Impala has a decades-long stronghold on popular culture that has millions of music followers across generations rapping about 20-inch blades on the Impala. More particularly than just popular culture, '90s rap featured the '64 Impala in sufficient songs for it to turn out chevy impala to be a piece of nostalgia for followers and musicians. Dr. Dre notably featured the 'sixty four Impala in at least three songs and music videos that each one featured Snoop Dogg, "Still D.R.E.," "Let Me Ride," and "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang."
In 1961 Chevy launched the Impala SS, with power choices together with the brand new (and now very rare) 360-hp 409 cid (6.7-liter) V-8. After 'sixty two, the SS grew to become primarily an appearance bundle, nevertheless it still could be ordered with Chevrolet's largest engines and beefed-up chassis elements. The SS package deal was dropped for 1970, though the Impala could still be ordered with big-block power. The 1966 Impala was a light restyle of the 1965, featuring a model new instrument panel, grille, wheel covers (except for SS models), and rectangular taillights that wrapped around to the aspect of the quarter panels. Standard features now included lap belts entrance and rear, reverse lamps, day/night rearview mirror, and a padded dashboard. All variations of the 2019 Impala include an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat, while a similarly adjustable passenger seat is on the choices record.
Chevrolet had a rudimentary "power vent" system that includes vents in the instrument panel. The ignition change was moved from the instrument panel to the steering column, and when the key was removed, the steering wheel and shift lever were locked. The 1967 mannequin was redesigned with enhanced Coke bottle styling that featured Corvette-inspired front and rear fender bulges. The L72 engine was not available in 1967, but the L36 Turbo-Jet V8 was elective.
After speaking with Bobby Singer, Dean goes on a drive by way of Heaven, eventually meeting up with Sam on a bridge after his own dying. In The Future, after Castiel's truck breaks down, he is compelled to stay at a motel with Kelly Kline. When Dean and Sam arrive with the Impala, they have an inclination to take each Castiel and Kelly again to the Bunker. While they leave the two contained in the Impala while they discuss things, Kelly drives off with the Impala in course of the Heavenly Portal, forcing Dean to fix Castiel's truck and chase after them. Once Dagon has been killed on the Heavenly Portal, Castiel escapes with Kelly, utilizing his truck as quickly as extra.
The 9C1 and 9C3 additionally had the option of getting the spoiler seen on the LT and LTZ until being changed by the spoiler that's on the SS in 2009. In 2007, Active Fuel Management became an choice across the board for the Impala. The police sedans received FlexFuel capability in 2008 to compete in opposition to the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, which additionally obtained a similar feature permitting it to make the most of E85. Instead, the Police Sedan used the unique center caps or the older style wheel covers which have been carried over from the 8th technology mannequin.
In We Happy Few, Sam drives the Impala to The Darkness' Lair to rescue Lucifer. However, the trio is intercepted by Amara on their approach to the Bunker. Sam tries to drive away, however Amara restrains them and prepares to kill. God retrieves the complete automobile mercury cougar simply in time and dumps it unceremoniously in one of many rooms within the Bunker. On the street, the Impala feels composed, absorbs bumps simply, and offers a hushed journey.

Joe Rogan's 1969 Chevy Nova Restomod
By Dave Ashton
If you have watched enough of Joe Rogan’s very popular podcast, you will have no doubt about his love of classic muscle cars. One standout vehicle in Mr Rogan’s collection is a custom 1969 Chevy Nova Restomod, produced by Pure Vision Design with a supercharged LT4 V8 powertrain.
In reality, Mr Rogan has quite an eclectic mix of vehicles in his collection, going from off-road performance like a 2021 Ford Raptor Hennessey Velociraptor 600, to even German engineering like a 2008 SharkWerks Porsche 997 911 GT3 RS. But for somebody who is American born and raised, a custom muscle car build is an obvious choice. Especially an example such as in 1969 Chevrolet Nova, a vehicle that is as tough and rugged looking now as it has ever been.
The video below walks you through the background behind the custom build, inspiration, and mechanicals. The custom build is also clearly a labor of love for the team, who quite rightly wax lyrical about every aspect of the car.
As with any custom muscle car build worth its salt, the powertrain is a key component. This particular Chevy Nova features a supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8, basically, the same variant found in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Without any tweaks to the power levels, the engine is good for 650 hp and 650 lb-ft. of torque, going through a 6-speed manual Tremec transmission. No power steering here.
The sheet metal used in the build was custom shaped and sourced from other vehicles such as a Camaro and Firebird, resulting in a 3 inches extra width to the vehicle. The interior is also completely bespoke, with added old and new extras such as an infotainment screen, and even Fender Telecaster electric guitar knobs for some of the accompaniments.
In essence, check out the full video below, even if it is just to get an idea of all the subtle details added to this wonderful custom build.

Silver King also developed a monthly payment plan, making their purchase a bit more palatable for depression era consumers on a tight budget.NEW BOOK antique COLSON old Bicycle Collectors REVISED EDITION! prewar postwar Here's a wonderful book by John Polizzi. Their unique style and light weight made them extremely appealing. Monark began building aluminum bicycles under the name Silver King in the 1930s and continued their production into the 1950s. The designers must have had fun going from batteries to bicycles. Lights, head tubes, rear stays, bottom brackets. There are quite a few art deco touches on all of the aluminum models from Monark Silver King. Monark was a unique company that had its start as a battery manufacturer from the early part of the century. This bicycle has the triple step lobdel rims, round shaped stainless fenders, and the straight steel truss rods. Year is most likely late 1930's or early 1940's. Very cool bike and with a little (alot) tlc and elbow grease would make for a great project bike. The bike is rideable but will require a complete overhaul of the drive train to get back to fully operational. Tires hold air but aren't even close to original - both built overseas. The fenders have several dings and dents, and they do not have the front and rear lamps/accent pieces. Wheels, frame, fork, fenders, and dropcenter stand are the only likely original pieces left. Aesthetically the frame is in pretty good condition and has a nice patina (ok, lots of patina) from over the years - fun to polish up and make it mirror shiny. Aluminum tubing constructed using "mushroomed" tubes and chromed steel fork blades with no suspension. This a Vintage 1930's or 1940's Monark Silver king built Wards Hawthorne aluminum mens bicycle.
