This was one of Thurston Moore's main guitars. A Fender Jazzmaster with one humbucker in the bridge, which was heavily used and tuned in GGDDD#D# around the 90's (Washing Machine era).
HELLO I AM A GUITAR NERD AND ALSO A JRWI NERD HERES WHAT KIND OF ELECTRIC GUITAR I THINK ALBATRIO WOULD PLAY AND WHY
Ok so for chip I knew it was going to be red. Obviously. Like his whole design is red. And I have been so obsessed with red Gibson les Pauls at the moment and I just thought it fit him so well so I went looking for one with gold accents
And I found this absolutely beautiful red and gold gibson les paul and god do I want my hands on that. This is such a chip guitar oh my god just the vibes are so him I don’t even know how to explain it. The red, black, and gold is so much like his swords as well
Now for Jay for a while I thinking an orange stratocaster would suit her and eventually I started looking at blue telecasters and I was very set in that for a while. I was originally leaning toward the telecaster because to me they just look very rigid and uniformed with the straight lines and I was thinking this kinda fit with the whole ex navy thing. However, since she obviously isn’t part of the navy anymore I found myself wanting something different but I wasn’t quite sure.
Now I’ve never played a Yamaha or been very interested in them at all, but I saw a couple Yamaha sg-800s in Johnny Marr’s book and I just knew it fit Jay. Everything about it is perfect. The blue and the gold accents to match her eyes. The shape. If you can’t imagine Jay Ferin playing this guitar you are lying to me.
Last but not least: Gillion. Choosing a guitar for Gillion was something I had a very hard time with. There was so many possibilities for colour and type and for a while I was quite stuck. I thought about teal and blue and even white before I eventually landed on yellow, thinking it matched the gold accents on his new design.
I’ve always been intrigued by jaguars and jazzmasters for their odd shape and I’ve always wanted to play one to see how it would feel. One day it just clicked for me that this yellow jazzmaster was the guitar for Gillion. The funky shape just feels so him. I was very torn on wether to pick a Jaguar or a jazzmaster as they look so similar, but I decided on a jazzmaster because of their whole thing with low notes and that just felt very Gillion to me.
Got some fancy photos with the fancy camera but for now this quick phone pic will have to suffice. Build number 4 being dropped off with its owner today.
A modded Fender Japan J Mascis Jazzmaster. Custom Black anodised pickguard, new Fender JM sized CuNiFe wide range humbuckers, full new Home of Tone loom, Descendant Vibrato unit and Stringjoy 11-50 strings.
Flashback #FenderFriday to last October and my buddy's 1964 #Fender#Jazzmaster in #CandyAppleRed.
Speaking of flash photography...do you remember my saga from a couple of months ago where I bought a fancy expensive flash online, only to have it fail after less than 2 months of use? Well I have some good news and some bad news on that front (but mostly good...):
Long story short:
1) Amazon agreed to refund me for the defective flash (hey - that's good news! 😀)
2) Unfortunately, I ended up out of pocket by 1300 bucks because I had to buy a second flash locally while I waited for my Amazon refund to be processed (ooh...that's bad news 😭)
3) The new flash is working fine! (hey - that's good news! 😀)
4) Unfortunately due to a snafu with my credit card expiring between the time I sent the defective flash back and the time they issued the credit, they couldn't actually refund my card (ooh...that's bad news 😭)
5) But they did issue me a credit! (hey - that's good news! 😀)
6) Unfortunately having a credit on Amazon doesn't help me pay for the 2nd flash I had to buy locally ((ooh...that's bad news 😭)
7) HOWEVER having a credit on Amazon DID help my buy a new lens! (hey - that's good news! 😀)
So in the end, the good news outweighs the bad news by 4 to 3, and I used my Amazon credit to buy a new Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S lens!
PS: The MC stands for "Micro" which is Nikon's way of saying what everyone else calls "macro". The lens is due to be delivered today...so stand by for a plethora of guitar closeups! Back In my early days on Instagram I was known for guitar macro shots, but I have kind of strayed away from them in recent years. Getting this new lens will hopefully reinvigorate my old macro mania! It will be just like the old days of Instagram again for me (nostalgic sigh...) 😉
