Four years ago, a five-issue miniseries focused on the Sky-Rider of the Spaceways came out from Marvel, Silver Surfer: Black. Written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Tradd Moore, the comic was a trippy take on the classic character. Like any classic, great Surfer story, it delivers powerful meditations on grief and identity while simultaneously pummeling you with giant, otherworldly cosmic…

PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the gnarliest-looking Doop piece you've ever seen, titled "Doop with Legs is a Lifestyle" by Felipe Sobreiro, c. 2019, after R. Crumb's now iconic "Keep on Truckin'" comix illustration.

Out this week for trade waiters: Justice Warriors TPB (Ahoy, $19.99):
Ahoy collects the dystopian satire miniseries by The Nib‘s Matt Bors and artist Ben Clarkson, about two cops, one with the shit emoji for a head, who … well, I’m not sure what else to say about it at this point.
See what else is coming to your friendly neighborhood comic book store this week.

The Illustrated Al Part 4 (secret bonus comics-as-an-art-form post).
Part 1/Part 2/Part 3.
Some extra bits I loved that are interesting results of the translation of a song to comic format.
In Albuquerque - to keep the panel layout interesting and varied over its 12 page span, there's quite a few instances of having lines come from sources other than the characters speaking.
A few pieces utilised the repetition of a line, which sounds natural in the song format, but in a static, written form comes across with a more anxious, erratic energy, which only helps convey the fairly sinister mood of the situation depicted and the uncomfortably fixated narrating character in the cases of Mr Popeil and My Own Eyes. Trigger Happy also utilised it with a different result- as the final page of the piece, it is a lot less colourful, energetic, and visually busy than the previous pages, which combined with the actual image brings the piece to a sombre, uneasy close (image under the cut due to gun violence/school shooting content).
Jackson Park Express by Felipe Sobreiro & Nathan Kempf on the other hand, doesn't include the repetition of "Jackson Park Express" which closes the song, bringing it to a sudden stop- much like how the narrator feels about the woman leaving the bus.
Other points on Jackson Park Express ...
This layout is just brilliant.
Congratulations on pacing this in such a way that the psychic damage inflicted in the original song isn't lost at all.
