This was a delicious and memorable meal I ate at O 'Scinà Trattoria in Syracuse. The sauce on the Palermitano Beef Rolls contained a full-bodied dry red wine made from the almost black Nero d’Avola grapes native to Sicily.  I followed up with the “best cannolo in Sicily” according to the husband and daughter of the woman who makes them. They weren’t wrong - it was the best cannolo I had in Sicily, and I tried as many as I could.  For science.

September 04 2023; As I celebrate today, my 73 trip around the sun I have been reflecting on what I would like to do differently while I am on the next rotation around the sun. First off I have never seen myself as a photographer, I am a painter. (My paintings can be seen by clicking on the link at the top of this blog.)   Rather I take snapshots daily to continually train my eyes and mind to recognize design elements, and in some cases humor, in everything that I encounter.  I started posting on Tumblr on July 01, 2011, as a classroom exercise for my drawing, painting, and design students in the media arts program at Cypress College. I challenged them to record, using a simple camera phone, images that documented the interesting elements that comprise our day-to-day mundane reality with emphasis on design and composition using a square format.

In the summer of 2015, I retired from teaching, as a full professor, after 38 years in the classroom. I have been posting a new picture ever day since the first post in July 2011. Tumblr reports that image is the 6,559 image that I have posted to date. Not bad, considering that I have never missed a day posting a new image from day one. Nor have I ever reposted any images.

Anyway, after giving it considerable contemplation I am going to take a long vacation from posting and spend more time working on my paintings. I will be back (God willing) I just have not set a timeline to rejoin the game.

Algy is delighted to welcome this fluffy little western screech owl (that’s western USA not western Scotland!) to his 9th tumblr birthday party. It has certainly flown a long, long way to get here - no wonder it has arrived after many of the other guests 😀

Algy isn’t sure whether this is a night-flying a day-flying owl, but as it’s currently night-time here and daytime there, he hopes that it will be happy one way or the other.

Clark’s spiny lizard (Sceloporus clarkii) at Ash Canyon. These are arboreal lizards, and excellent climbers. Visitors to the bird sanctuary are sometimes startled to find such large, stout lizards clinging to branches or walls overhead. 

Incidentally, today marks the anniversary of this Tumblr. My first post was on this date in 2008, so today is the start of Fatchance’s fifteenth year. Aside from parenthood and my career it is possibly my longest-enduring project. I would never have guessed it. I hope it brings some pleasure to those who follow or stop by.
