I had the privilege of knowing her since 2017-18. Amazing person. She was so articulate, funny, caring, generous, gracious, and so much more. It hurt deep in my soul hearing the news via her husband. I can’t make it make sense how such pure malice can exist in the world, but Diana persevered her whole life, and was the one light in the darkness that gave you hope. For the good people in your life, it is never “Goodbye,” but “See you later.” Rest easy, Diana. Slava Ukraini.
I must admit... I came here out of curiosity. And I thought I'd be here for a short time, because I didn't expect to find any active fandom of BBC Sherlock after so long since the last ep aired, and... such a surprise to see how wrong I was!
A bit of context
I discovered BBC Sherlock thanks to my sister's recommendation after watching 'Doctor Strange' (because I absolutely loved the movie -and the actor, of course-). I fell in love with Sherlock the first time I watched it. And six years later, I rewatched it and became a sick fan. And yes, I definitely noticed the flirtation and glances between Sherlock and John 😅, so I started looking for other opinions about that on social media. This led me to Pinterest, where I discovered a treasure trove of Sherlock's meta (in screenshots) and lots of fanart. They all took me to the same place: Tumblr.
Exactly one year ago today, I opened my account. I love being here, I love the amazing and talented people from the fandom I love, and I love my tumblr friends.
This is my place now :)
PS: tysm @safedistancefrombeingsmart for your lovely gift!!
do you ever start talking to someone or make a friend online who’s just SO FUCKING COOL you can’t believe they actually talk to YOU of all people ???? amazing.
I think something that's often fundamentally misunderstood is teens and young adults appearing to always be on their phones.
It's not necessarily laziness or whatever other negative trait it has been connected to. For many people it's a safe place. The one safe place they have. It's where you go to seek refuge from your natural environment. Especially for neurodivergents, queers, victims of abuse and bullying, and people with disabilities.
You make friends and build your own community, you make memories, you share art, you share life experiences with like-minded people that may be in similar situations and you feel understood. You feel accepted and not judged. You feel loved.
Real life is rough and can be painful but our smartphones offer a different door for us. A door that leads to fandom, to music, to art, to passion and refuge.
So yes of course you choose to spend a majority of your time on your smartphone. Of course you would choose to feel safe and loved. Of course.
It's dry of judgement, it's filled with the warmth of a community that accepts you as you are, it fills your tummy with joy, with thrill, with excitement and love and it provides a safe haven like a roof over your head.
This was my friend. This is what she stood for and defended, not because of politics or for personal gain, but because it was the right thing to do. Because there is a price for vigilance and the defense of liberty, a price she, and many of her brothers in arms, would end up paying.
You will be in my memory forever, Diana. You will always be someone I can say, with no doubt, that you were the ultimate badass, and that I was proud to know you, even in this little corner of the online world. Slava Ukraini
And for those not in the know or who are on the fence about supporting Ukraine, consider this: If we do not help them defeat this existential threat to democracy, then it will be our daughters and our sons sharing these same front lines, and they will be the ones returning home in a flag-draped casket.
