Mère et fille

A very self-indulgent embrace... after re-reading some passages from the book as well as listening to "J'avais rêvé" (I Dreamed a Dream) a few times (and letting out a few tears), I needed to sketch down this glimpse of another, fairer, world.
Fantine's design will be worked on separately soon ;)

I think we all need to talk about more and make more content about how Cosette and Fantine's names are not actually their names
I need a song in the musical about Cosette's name not being Cosette

Fantine becomes an epitome of a roaring rage that roars at the face of injustice
Cosette becomes an epitome of a quiet strength that sometimes gets overlooked for many
Fantine starts off young and wide eyed, yet fell so ' low ' and ultimately, sadly is crushed by the weight of cruelty and injustice onto her ( yet her soul ultimately ascends )
Cosette starts off horribly enslaved, yet soared above darkness and chaos, and is able to rise from the injustices bestowed upon her
Fantine is inadvertently driven to madness and later death by injustices and cruelty
Cosette rises above injustices and cruelty IN SPITE OF IT
Fantine becomes deeply passionate, wrestles for survival, sings about the mountains and nature, wears flowers on her hair, plays the fiddle, and becomes like a whirlwind of passions and flames screaming for justice
Cosette becomes gentle, compassionate, incredibly brave, and becomes like a Ray of dawn for many around her that also becomes a symbol of hope against injustices
Fantine is like a Phoenix, who rose again and again after every trial
Cosette is like a lark, who sings of a new dawn even after last night's chaos
Fantine becomes associated with martyrdom and roaring for justice
Cosette becomes associated with hope, a more peaceful aspect of life, and allyship of the ostracized

Initial Character Names in Les Mis
I've been having fun poking around in the "Rédaction Initiale" (the earliest version) of Les Mis and want to collect the different initial character names I've run across in one place!
Jean Valjean <- Jean Tréjean
madame Magloire <- madame Marthe
mademoiselle Baptistine <- mademoiselle Sylvanie
Fantine <- Marguerite Louet
Cosette <- Anna Louet*
Marius Pontmercy <- Thomas Pontmercy
Gillenormand <- Charpentier
Gavroche <- Chavroche
Eponine <- Palmyre
Azelma <- Malvina
Grantaire <- Grangé
* This name is the reason Cosette is called Alouette! “La mère s’appelait Marguerite Louet, son enfant s’appelait Anna Louet. D’Anna Louet on avait fait Alouette. C’était le nom qu’on lui donnait dans tout Montfermeil.” Translation: The mother was called Marguerite Louet, her child was called Anna Louet. From Anna Louet they had made Alouette. It was the name she was given in all of Montfermeil.
This isn't an exhaustive list, these are just the ones I've noticed.

according to Hugo’s descriptions, Fantine has blonde hair and Cosette has dark hair. many of the adaptations switch this, partially because of the association of lighter hair with purity, of which Cosette is the embodiment. Hugo’s original character design, however, works both aesthetically and symbolically; Fantine is innocent and pure to the end, despite what she’s had to go through (or, rather, because she suffers it for love of her child). and Cosette is pure and innocent, despite her dark origins, thanks to the people who have loved her and cared for her. to discard all of this in live and film adaptations is just sad. also, the metaphor of light-dark for pure-tainted is outdated and rooted in racism. in this essay, i will —
