SETTING: Housamo.

GENDER: Male.

SPECIES: Alpaca.

AGE: 28.

OCCUPATION: Librarian.

PERSONALITY: A flirty, somewhat vain, yet sharp young man.

DESCRIPTION: Hailing from Hanan Pacha (*), Chuychú has been liaison between gods, astronomer / researcher, and now part of a Guild that mixes magic and scientific research. His main objective is to study and catalogue divergent timelines, including previous time loops. Generally pacific by nature, leaving the fighting to the bodyguards in his group, he is nevertheless more than wiling to defend himself or others in a pinch.

SACRED ARTIFACT: The star mirrors —two twin orbs. One shows time and one space. Chuychu primarily uses them to study cosmic and time anomalies. Can also use them to show others their own past or divergent timelines (an ability he usually reserves only for people who might need a push in the right direction). In battle, he can combine their effects to create a profound vertigo effect, powerful enough to knock down all but the most resilient opponents.

GUILD: Tama Scholars (**)

(*) = A world based on Inca mythology.

(**) = Another concept my boyfriend and I came up with together. A group more interested in research than in fighting, based on Tama as it is the site of Tokyo’s biggest library.

- Juan Darién (aka JD)

SETTING: Housamo.

GENDER: Male.

SPECIES: Tiger-man / Human (see below).

AGE: 17.

OCCUPATION: Student.

PERSONALITY: Self-assured, if somewhat stubborn. Because he believes humans to be naturally prone to evil, he figures that his human form is not beholden to the same restrictions he imposes upon himself as a tiger. Consequently, in his tiger form he acts in what he understands to be a virtuous way (some say, self-righteous) and in his human form as a creature of desire. Yet his true personality is that of a naive young man still learning about the world.

DESCRIPTION: The son of a tiger-man and a human woman. Lived peacefully in a small village in Yvy Tenondé (*), until the townspeople, who did not approve of this mixed marriage, burned their home. Juan Darién lost his parents that day, and since then came to believe that humans are evil by nature. Later, coming to a different world via a pillar of light, he joined the Aoyama group, figuring that their beliefs are the closest to his notions of good and evil. He considers his tiger form his true, and pure nature, and sometimes dons his human form purely to excise out his “sinful temptations”… or used to, until a fateful day when his ideologies led him to clash with one of the Crafters.

The experience with the resulting Exception, and the intimacy necessary to cancel it, have led JD to question several of his long-held beliefs.

SACRED ARTIFACT: A medallion that represents “Split”. He uses it to switch between his two forms, identifying the tiger side as “Juan” and the human as “Darién”. Only recently has he begun using both names at all times. The medallion can also be used in combat to split App users from their Artifacts. However, this can be a double-edged sword. Some Artifacts will simply go inert without a wielder, but others will go wild without a user to anchor them.

GUILD: Missionaries.

(*) = Part of the same world that includes Anáhuac and Hanan Pacha. Loosely based on Guaraní mythology.

- Fortunato.

SETTING: Housamo.

GENDER: Male.

SPECIES: Lion.

AGE: 40.

OCCUPATION: Security guard.

PERSONALITY: Serious-minded about his job and about what he is to protect, be it arts, relics, or knowledge. Generally friendly otherwise, and particularly kind to children.

DESCRIPTION: A transient who journeyed from his word looking for his twin, Sopho. Together they formed a duo dedicated to guarding all manner of temples and sacred spaces, descending from a long line of guardians. In this world he fulfills that role in his guild’s library base, together with a wolf transient whom Fortunato regards as a brother-in-arms. Quite protective of his guild and his friends, perhaps in part derived from his job.

SACRED ARTIFACT: A morning-star flail that can hide doorways or reveal them. In battle Fortunato uses it to lock his opponents into a combat room that he alone controls.

GUILD: Scholars.

- Phyx.

SETTING: Housamo.

GENDER: Female.

SPECIES: Sphynx (winged lioness)

AGE: 35.

OCCUPATION: Linguist.

PERSONALITY: Inquisitive, to the point that sometimes she’ll hyper-focus on questions. Especially when meeting somebody new. Nevertheless a capable leader and a fierce warrior when needed.

DESCRIPTION: A transient from Aaru. Phyx was the guardian of a massive temple until curiosity led her to explore the contents of this temple herself, finding a vast wealth of knowledge and culture. When she journeyed to another world, she sought a similar place of culture, finding it in the largest library of the city. Leader of the Tama Scholars. Under her leadership, this Guild is less interested in imposing a specific Ideology than in preserving records of several matters —including the many time loops that have come to pass before.

SACRED ARTIFACT: A golden scepter that controls light. At it’s most powerful it will summon a light beam that can annihilate in seconds. There is a second, subtler power it has —Phyx can use it to reveal hidden passages or messages.

GUILD: Scholars.

- Yasy Yateré.

SETTING: Housamo.

GENDER: Male.

SPECIES: Unkown —shapeshifter, presents as a golden hare-man.

AGE: Unknown —claims to be 18.

OCCUPATION: Greenhouse keeper.

PERSONALITY: Polite, friendly and approachable. Has a more playful side that he reserves for his “golden friends” (see below).

DESCRIPTION: A mysterious, elusive Transient from Yvy Tenondé. He generally stays out of App Battles and what few people contact him have found Yasy to be an okay, if slightly reserved, fellow. However, he has a side that only a few have seen. Every so often, Yasy will find a boy who catches his fancy, and use his powers to get close to him. When the time is right, he will give them a kiss that tastes like honey and wild berries —which will entrance them, after which he’ll take them to his secret garden to play. Yasy eventually gets bored of these “golden friends” and will let them go. What is he truly searching for? Even Guilds like the Wisemen and the Entertainers have not been able to crack this mystery just yet.

SACRED ARTIFACT: A baculum decorated with small precious stones. It controls neither plants nor mesmerism, as his opponents expect —instead, it lets him control emotions or even make people drowsy. Yasy prefers to escape rather than to defeat his opponents. However, an opponent who pushes too far will find themselves confronted with Yasy’s true nature: One of the seven children of Kerana and Tau, god of Evil. His genuine appearance and powers are not quite so whimsical.

GUILD: Unknown. Has been rumored to be part of either the Rule Makers or the Genociders, but neither group has ever confirmed he is in their ranks.

- Amber.

An AU variation on Kounosuke, using concepts from “Steven Universe” and later “Houseki no Kuni”.

- Hugh Cahil.

SETTING: A particular AU that I use along with my boyfriend that is, uuhhh….. “Morenatsu but with Sci-fi stuff. Also a lot of characters from other Fandoms”.

GENDER: Male.

AGE: 21.

SPECIES: Tasmanian Devil.

SEXUALITY: Gay.

OCCUPATION: Drama teacher. Moonlights as the drummer for “The Carrions”.

PERSONALITY: Blunt and straight to the point, yet fiercely loyal to his friends and to their friends in turn. Highly gregarious.

DESCRIPTION: The kind of cool teacher whose students flock to for his unconventional choices in teaching (one year he had this drama class do a stage production of “You’re good man, Charlie Brown” followed by “Dog sees God: Confessions of a teenage blockhead” (*) ). Singaporean, though of Australian origin, recently Hugh has been focusing more on his band, as they are finally starting to get their first breaks.

(*) = Look up the plot to these plays. You are in for a quite a treat!

- Karnevil.

SETTING: Mutanimals / TMNT.

GENDER: Male.

SPECIES: Hyena.

SEXUALITY: (Undecided)

AGE: Unknown (roughly estimated to be in his late 20’s).

OCCUPATION: Former hotel doorman; currently, mercenary.

PERSONALITY: Obsessive, yet wiling to bargain.

DESCRIPTION: A victim of two separate mutations, first from human to hyena-man, then briefly to brainwashed servant and back —but in the process discovered a dark desire deep inside of him: To eat the flesh of living human beings. Mutants, too. He has forgotten his original name in lieu of his chosen monicker. Will lend his augmented speed, strength, and mouthful of razor-sharp teeth and claws to any employer wiling to provide him with what he craves. Yet once the hunger is sated, he has found himself aimless and often adrift in life…

- Moy

SETTING: TMNT / Mutanimals.

SPECIES: Mutant Leopard with purple fur.

GENDER: Male.

AGE: 26.

OCCUPATION: Former truck driver, currently freelance courier.

PERSONALITY: Disciplined at his job, used to be timid. Currently becoming more and more outspoken.

DESCRIPTION: An exchange student from Guatemala who extended his stay working all sort of off jobs. He was considering leaving when disaster struck and he found himself doused in Mutagen even as he clung to a dyed paw he had won in a fair years ago. The mutation gave him the additional, uncommon power to teleport. Finding himself with no real barriers for the first time in his life, Moy has decided to explore every nook and cranny of this strange world —and beyond!

NOTE: Based on the character “Moykat” from the licensed Mexican TMNT comic back in the 90’s.

How could the King ever truly love you?

You… a lowly peasant in his court… a serf in need of his service.

You wake up to another day filled with hard labour, a full schedule, and a yearning heart. He occupies every crevice in your mind. When at work, all you can do is think about the few moments he’s embraced you and think about how you just want to be held. Every memory shared between him and you, whether they be happy or sad, plays through your mind on an unstoppable loop.

The money he provides for you helps, but that is not what you require the most from him. It is not the cold pay he gives to your university because paying it by yourself is impossible, it is not the distance of the relationship, it is not the sex, it is love. You need love more than all of that and he is the only one that you desire.

This emptiness, this yearning needs to end. You reached for your phone and tapped Cornell’s name bar on your contacts app. He will either reciprocate and you both can live in your happily ever after dreamscape or you could at least come to terms with the fact he might never love you.

“Hey, Y/N. How are you?” Cornell’s unexpected voice rang like a song to your ears this early in the morning.

Despite the beauty of Cornell’s voice, Anxiety shook your body. “Hey -um. I’m -um- I’m doing find-fine. I just -a- need to talk to you like -um- after work tonight. It’s -uh- really important to me.” You finally managed to get it out.

“Okay. See you then. I may be a bit busy, but it shouldn’t be too bad. Have a good day.”

“Um, okay. You too.”

You waited until he wanted to hang up to end the call.

“Damn, after three whole years, finally gonna drop the big question on him!” Your roommate Antigone mummed sleepily.

You thought about biting with an inflammatory remark, but she was right and she caught you at an early morning grogginess disadvantage. She knew you better than you knew yourself. “I can’t help my feelings. He deserves to know, at the very least.”

“We can always choose who we fall in love with. You chose him, deal with the consequences.”

Morning Antigone was always harsher than After Coffee Antigone. “Thanks, at least I can always count on your biting honesty. My one constant in life… ”

“What else am I here for?”

“Being a pain in my ass.”

“Yep. An’ I enjoy every part of it.”

Today was just one class, your Asian Religions class you took for an easy A, and work, but that’s not going to be the hardest part of your day. Asian Religions was quite easy to breeze through. Two hours of the day were gone trickling like coffee in the pot. Your job swept on by as well. Even though there was a couple of disgruntled employees that did not spoil your day. That comes later.

It became dark outside, as it typically does at night, so traversing through the New York City landscape became quite a task. People were throwing trash on the ground, a guy with a suit and tie walked along with only a cigarette for company. You try not to look, try to keep your head down and focus on getting to Harlem’s Paradise to finally after three fucking years confront Cornell about your feelings.

Throughout the day, you were already deciding on what to say, what would be the best way to say it to ensure that the point comes across clearly.

“We can continue this transaction the way it is going and let me finally be at peace with the fact you will never love me, or if you do love me then we can move further on into developing something that I would very much like, which is a real relationship.” That was what stuck in your head the best after the big declaration. You repeated the phrase in your head as much as possible, to make sure that you’d never forget it.

Finally, the purple lights of Harlem’s Paradise appeared in front of you. You skirted down the alleyway to the secret backdoor entrance Cornell told you about. It had an entry door keypad with a simple four-digit code you made sure to never forget. The secondary, less-used stairway that led to Cornell’s office was adjacent to the door. You wanted your steps to be quiet so you would not attract any attention.

Halfway up the stairs, the distinct sound of bones breaking ricocheted into your ear. You rushed up to the stairs to see what was happening thinking Cornell was hurt and you see Cornell hurting someone.

“Cornell, what is this?” Your voice delaying his assault.

The red light on his skin made him look regal. The way it reflected.

“Just business, Y/N.” Cornell stated nonchalantly. “I’m done with him anyway. Can you help me with cleanup?”

Seeing as you did not have much of a choice, you dug through his office desk to the lowest drawer and retrieved the first aid kit. Meanwhile, the poor boy’s body was removed by Cornell’s king’s guard from the office, leaving splatters of blood where his head once lay.

“I need ice.” You muttered aloud to yourself, walking to the ice machine next to Cornell’s wine cooler. Cornell handed you his stained handkerchief for you to wrap the ice up nicely. “This is only enough for one hand. Let me go down to the kitchen and get another rag for your other hand. I forgot to put a rag in the kit in replacement for the last time something like this happened.”

“I’ll be waiting,” Cornell said after a long swig of Scotch, his hands struggling to keep the glass steady in his hand.

Tears swelled in your eyes as you traipsed down the stairs. Your eyes became warm. Why does he have to hurt himself like this, you thought. You wetted your sleeves with the tears that fell down like cowards.

You stormed through the crowd in the kitchen politely so you could get to the laundry storage, quickly grabbing a rag and leaving the scene as quickly as possible.

Once you arrived up in the office you wasted no time inserting the ice into the cloth. “You need to clean it up a bit first.” You murmured, getting a bottle of refrigerated water to pour over the growing wounds a bit.

You placed the ice on the table next to where Cornell was sitting. The bottle, already unscrewed, only needed a bit of tilting to get some water out.

“Why are you crying? Did someone say something to you?” Cornell winced at the exposure of the cold on his sensitive skin.

“No, it’s ‘cause you are -um- hurt.” Tears choking you up.

He let out a little chuckle, “It’s not like I’m dead.”

“You keep this up, you just might be.” You tried to keep that to yourself, but it softly escaped.

“You shouldn’t worry about me. It’s rotten work.”

His face shrivels up at the feeling of you wrapping the makeshift ice pack around his hands with self-adhesive bandages. “If you stop doing this type of stuff, you wouldn’t have to go through with that.”

“What other anecdotes do you have in store for me, Saint Mary?”

“I gave you two for free, the other ones you’ll have to pay for.” You hope your joke landed.

A light huff escaped from his nose. Relief washed over you. Good, he liked it.

“Earlier today, you said you wanted to talk to me about something… ” Cornell’s voice wavered.

The relief was only short lived. It felt as if someone had shocked you with an electrical outlet. You eyes grew wide. The red light of the room, while dim, made it easy for your emotions to be seen. Panic. You always knew this moment would come at some point today, in fact you’ve envisioned the grand expose that you would give him in your fantasies that kept you sane at work, but now that it was happening words were struggling to form. Every phrase you had memorised went out the fucking door. Every eloquent word that was to be said evolved into caveman speak. You couldn’t even think.

“Umm. I -umm…” The words choked up in your throat.

Cornell reached for your hand, gliding his thumb over the flat of it. You quickly released your hand from his grip and ran as far away from him as you could. It wasn’t right to ask it, you thought. Of course he won’t reciprocate, you daft bastard.

But what if he does? Your second voice said after closing the door, stopping you in your tracks.

You’re just being a stupid girl, of course, he’s not.

You ran the rest of your way back to the dorm.

“So? Does he love you back?” Antigone asked after you slammed your dorm room shut, not even looking up from her books.

“When the moment came, I was too scared to ask.” You said after slamming your purse down on your desk.

“That man is going to be the death of you. And wash off your hands, I can smell the blood from here.”

Cornell was left in his office dumbfounded. There was one other person in the room with him, Tone.

“What was that?” Cornell asked.

“I don’t know, boss.” Tone said.

Cornell didn’t sleep at all that night. He lied awake pondering what words you were going to say, were they about his behaviour, did you no longer need him for college, did you want to end the relationship, did you find in someone else? And the way that you left him like a scared dog. Where you really afraid of him? Tears were threatening to pour…

“Y/N, you got company.” Antigone nudged your shoulder.

She knew you were awake. Your tossing and turning kept her up.

“It’s your boyfriend. The guy you won’t stop talking about. Wake up, Sleeping Beauty.”

You slowly sat up in the bed and had a mug of hot black tea was shoved into your hands.

“Okay, so get some of this tea into your system. I have my Bio lab this morning, so I’ll leave you two alone to talk about your feelings cauSE IF I HEAR YOU TWO HAVEN’T PROFESSED YOUR ABSOLUTE ADORATION AND DEVOTION TO EACH OTHER, I WILL TEAR YOUR EYEBALLS OUT!! So have a lovely day lady and gentleman.”

Antigone stormed out the room, slamming the door behind her.

After she left. A pregnant pause ruminated throughout the tiny, cramped room. Neither of you could say what you wanted to say to each other.

“Antigone doesn’t have Bio lab this morning, today’s Saturday.” You muttered through your terrible morning voice while bobbing the tea bag up and down in the mug. The effectiveness was in question, but it was a great distraction from the nervous feelings that emerged.

“Why did you run away, Y/N? And don’t deflect.” Cornell demanded although the demand is far less serious when the person making the demands has no power in his voice.

You rubbed your head with your hand. “I didn’t think it was important to say anymore.”

“That’s no need to run away, though. Something or someone scared you, what was it?” Cornell lowered himself onto your bed.

“I don’t know.” Tears again.

“You know I’m not leaving until you tell me what you wanted to say to me, important or not.”

Your throat clenched. The tea didn’t do much to help. You looked up at him, his eyes were red, bloodshot and he had the look of someone who had just got done sobbing. His hands were shaking and his leg was doing that thing where it bobs up and down and no matter how well you try to control it and make it stop, it always makes a reprise.

“Please don’t hate me.” A timber ran through your spine.

“I could never.” He placed his hands over yours that were clamped around your mug.

You cleared your throat. You might as well get it out as fast as possible. Rip the bandaid off.

“I love you.” You said in a barely audible voice.

“Come again.”

“I love you.” A little louder this time, and there is no way that he couldn’t have heard that in this tiny dorm.

“Come again.”

In annoyance that he was making you repeat that again, “I LOVE YOU, CORNELL STOKES. I love you. I love you. I love you.”

“I know.” Cornell said. “I love you, too.” His eye contact with you broke.

“So why didn’t you say anything!? I was miserable thinking that you could not love me back. I woke up every day thinking that our relationship was never going to be anything more than what it was. My heart sank after I woke up from every dream that I had with you knowing that they were just going to be dreams. Every dream that I’ve had was of you except that one when Spongebob Squarepants and Walter White from Breaking Bad were my parents and that’s only because I was Netflix and VPN hopping that night, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...”

“I’m sorry. I was not aware of that. I thought to keep our relationship transactional would help you more, so you could find a better person for you. I thought I was helping you.”

“But I want you. I need you and nobody else is ever going to do. I wanted to tell you that, but I backed out thinking you would never feel the same way about me as I do you. Thinking that I was just being a stupid lovesick little girl.”

Cornell was at a loss for words. For the first time in his life, he didn’t know what to say. He needed to do or say something fast though, or else his heart was going to beat out of his chest.

“Do you have any classes or work today?”

“No. Why?”

“Because I’m taking you on a date. A proper date. Of your choosing. I’ll pay, but you choose the place. I have tons of making up to do.”

“I’d like that. There’s this new Cajun place, I’m really excited seein’ about it.”

“It’s a date then, love.”

Digital Tabletop RPG Reference

I know the vast majority of the world is being encouraged to stay home. It can be a struggle at time to isolate yourself in such a way and I know that a lot of Tabletop RPG groups have had to call a hiatus or move online. If you’re one of these people or you’re just looking to get into tabletop RPGs at this time, I’ve created a post of all the free and cheap things I can think of to get you started.

Platforms

Roll20 - Roll20 is a platform with free and paid tier subscriptions. With the free subscription you can run games easily, import maps, create campaigns, and share sources you already have. All combat and movement views are top-down. The only drawbacks is if you would like to use the embedded resources in your games the source material can be a little pricey, but if you use it in conjunction with dndbeyond or just your paper materials it’s easy enough to accomplish

Tabletop Simulator - Tabletop Simulator is exactly how it sounds. It’s a virtual tabletop to play, not just RPGs, but generally any kind of tabletop game you can think of. There are extensive asset packs in the workshop to use with TTRPGs, as well as packs that allow you to play games like Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill and Gloomhaven which are pretty expensive irl. Tabletop Simulator is in the steam store right now for about $20. Unfortunately everyone in your group needs to have it in order to play. A workaround one of my groups found is for someone (usually the DM) to have it up and screenshare over discord.

Fantasy Grounds - Full disclosure, I haven’t used Fantasy Grounds personally. It’s just the things that usually comes up when looking for ways to play online. It does look easy to use and right now they’re having a sale. The demo version is free but only allowed 1 player and 1 GM. The standard edition is currently on sale for $9.75 for the year and the Ultimate edition for $89.40.

Astral Tabletop - Another online web app to play campaigns through. I don’t know much about it, but the important bit is that all paid features are free until April. It supports motion maps which is super nice for the GMs that want something extra.

Source Materials

Source materials are generally the most costly part of a campaign. I’ve tried to find the cheapest, quality TTRPGs materials possible.

Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition

Wizards of the Coast has the core rules on their site for free so you can get started without all the costs of books and supplements

dndbeyond - dndbeyond offers all 5e source material as well as tools for created and running a campaign. If someone in your party has a DM tier subscription, only one person has to buy the materials on the site and create a campaign to share with everyone else. Digitally the books are fairly cheap with the Player’s Handbook and the Dungeon Master Guide coming in at $30 each. Even if you don’t buy the materials from dndbeyond, the character sheet creator is absolutely worth the free account

Roll20 - the 5e content on roll20 is a little pricey, but if you decide to use roll20 for your campaign, this does make it easier to add loot and other equipment directly into the maps

Fate

Fate may be new to a lot of people, but it is the blankest of slates when it comes to TTRPGs. It can be adapted into any kind of established or homebrew world you can think of.

Evil Hat Productions is the publisher of Fate and has PDF versions of all of their TTRPG games. The Fate Accelerated Edition (a condensed version of Fate Core) is free in pdf form with a suggested pay-what-you-like rate of $2.50. The more in depth Fate Core System is free in pdf form with a suggested pay-what-you-like rate of $5. There are also various toolkits on the on their site to help you adapt Fate to the setting of your choice.

Roll20 does a little better with pricing when it comes to FATE with the Fate Complete Bundle coming in at $20

Monster Hearts 2

Monster Hearts is a supernatural coming-of-age RPG as seen on Critical Role. It has a very simple rule set based on the Apocalypse World engine. It is available on the creator’s website for $10 with a discount code in the description for people who can’t afford that at this time. While you’re there check out The Quiet Year, a post-apocalyptic map game that only requires a deck of cards to play, available for pay-what-you-like.

Call of Cthulhu

A horror RPG set in the 1920s based on the works of the problematic progenitor of modern horror, HP Lovecraft.

Chaosium, who publishes CoC, has the Starter Set PDF for $9.99. This includes basic rules, a solo adventure, 5 character sheets, and 2 adventures for a Keeper (the GM), and their players. I have personally played the solo adventure and highly recommend it to get you familiar with the rules if CoC is what you’re looking at. the Keeper Rulebook ($27.95) and Investiator Handbook ($22.95) are both available in PDF forms on their site.

Roll20 also has a lot of CoC content that can be integrated into character sheets and actual gameplay on Roll20

Misc Resources

Maps - You can get free RPG maps at the r/dndmaps subreddit where users post their battle and realm maps creations. 2 Minute Tabletop also has a free section.

Dice Rollers - If you don’t have dice and don’t want to risk ordering them or going to find some right now there are several online dice rollers like the Wizards of the Coast dice roller and the embedded dice roller if you google ‘dice roller’. Most virtual RPG platforms have virtual dice rolling as well.

Minis - If you go the Tabletop Simulator route, you can import your own miniatures that you can render yourself or get from sites like thingiverse and myminifactory. They do have to be converted to obj files to import to Tabletop Simulator, but that can be done with a free program like blender.

Modules - If you want pre-made or homebrew adventures, items, and classes, check out DM’s Guild for Dungeons and Dragons and DriveThruRPG for all other systems

I will probably add more systems later, but this should be enough to get you started or at least point you in the right direction to start your quarantined tabletop adventures.

Someone asked me what my process was, and I’m not sure I gave her a satisfying answer in the PM, so here I will attempt to explain how I make a game from start to finish.

*Please note the the drafts above are not for the same story, but for the purpose of illustration.

**Also please take this advice with a grain of salt. I’m not a published author (though I do know a bit about the publishing industry), and I’m definitely not a perfect writer. This is my process, and the things I try to keep in mind when I’m writing, and you may find this advice to be complete garbage.

Step one: Get an idea for a story. I can’t really give any tips on how to go about doing this. I tend to take inspiration from other works of media (classical literature is my favorite, though I have taken cues from more contemporary sources as well).

Step two: Consider who your characters are going to be. It’s okay if you only have one or two characters in mind at first. I’m pretty utilitarian about my characters, so most of them don’t get created until step three.

Step three: Open a word document and just start typing shit out. (I use Google Drive so I can access it from anywhere, and for another reason which I’ll get to later.) Don’t stop to think, don’t even breathe. Just type. Any idea that comes into your head goes in the document. Some of it won’t make sense with everything else, some of it will contradict other things, some of it will be vaguely defined. You will fix that later. This is the most important part (especially the way I write), because it’s where you’re going to get an idea of how your story starts and how it ends, as well as cement your cast of characters. If you need a scene where your main character goes to a lighthouse, then you know you’ll also need to come up with a lighthouse keeper (see my comment above about being utilitarian with characters. I’m no authority, so if you do things differently, that’s fine, but I don’t like making characters that don’t serve a purpose).

Step four: Annotation, annotation, annotation! (This is the other thing I use Google Drive for, as it has a comment feature that I heavily rely on.) Go through all your scribbling and make notes for yourself. Be a little hard on yourself here, because this is the part where you’re going to try to make everything you’ve written in Draft 1 cohesive. This will be a long process, as you need to think about how all of this is connected, as well as think about what sort of arcs your main characters are going to go through. I read somewhere once that ALL of your characters have to go through an arc, but that’s a bunch of wacky nonsense. Some characters are minor characters, and thus do not require depth. The only character arc that MUST be included is the main character’s arc. Remember: character arc ≠ character motivation. ALL major characters (protagonist(s), love interest(s), villain(s)) MUST have motivation for what they are doing. The motivation doesn’t have to be anything too complex, just so long as the audience understands why the characters are doing what they’re doing. (Minor characters with motivation can make the world feel more real and lived in, but they can also make the story feel bogged down. Brevity is key here, and sometimes less is more.)

Step five: Draft 2 All of that plotting you just did? Throw it away! Just kidding, don’t actually throw it away. BUT you’re going to rewrite your plot outline, tidier this time, and only refer back to Draft 1 when you get stuck. Feel free to come up with new ideas during this time; Draft 1 is not your story’s final form. If you think of scenes or quotes, feel free to include them in this draft, but you’re mostly just outlining right now. (As you may notice in the image above, Draft 2 is also subject to annotation.) Draft 2 is where you should be solidifying the themes of your story. Character arc(s) should tie into and support this theme. This is also the draft where you should be catching any plot holes (especially if you don’t have an editor/beta reader), as once you’ve begun actually writing the story, any problems here will only compound as you go.

Step six: Write the story It’s pretty straightforward. Follow Draft 2 (and any additional annotations you made on Draft 2), and go scene by scene and write. I never skip around, as it makes it hard to keep track of what characters know at what time, but I know of authors that do skip around, and they seem to do okay. You’ll have to figure out what works best for you.

Step seven: Edit, edit, edit! Aside from the obvious (typos and spelling errors), look out for:

Scenes that are too long or too short. Counterintuitively, these may be the result of the same problem: a lack of purpose. Ask yourself, “Does this need to be here?”

Long-winded info dumps. Consider the old adage, “show, don’t tell.” Whenever information can be conveyed through action or reaction, write it that way. If you can convey two things at the same time (i.e. something about a character and also something about the world--bonus if these two things are actually unrelated to each other), do it.

Information that your audience wouldn’t logically have being the key to resolving the plot. Especially in sci-fi and fantasy stories, if the conclusion of the story relies on knowing something--even if it’s something that the characters all know--you need to make sure your audience also knows this, or else they will be frustrated. Keep in mind the Rule of Threes.

And that’s the story portion done. If you’re making a visual novel/dating sim, there are other steps you need to do. (I usually do this stuff while writing the story so it doesn’t get tedious, but if you’re hiring people to do this other stuff, you should probably have the writing done ahead of time. If you’re hiring writers to help you, you should have Draft 1 done, at the least. Your writers can probably take it from there.)

NOTE: Any job you don’t do yourself is something that will cost you money. If you can find other aspiring creators to volunteer their time to your project, good for you, but please do not approach anyone directly unless you plan to offer to pay them (”for exposure” is not payment).

Step eight: Character sprites Major characters are going to need to be represented visually in your visual novel (go figure!), so... draw some people? I know some people make character design sheets, but I just jump right in, and then later, make microedits to the sprites as the mood strikes me. The design sheet thing is probably a smarter way to do it. I use photoshop, and I would strongly encourage keeping hair, clothing, and facial features on separate layers until you know exactly how you plan to code them into your game.

Step nine: Backgrounds Same as the sprites, except places instead of people. I’m bad at this, so I have no right to give anyone advice. I use a 3D interior design app to create a guide for what I want rooms to look like, and then I use that to get my vanishing points and furniture sizing right. This method is 50% tracing, 50% wishing I was dead. I do not recommend it.

Step ten: Audio If your game will have voice acting, get that together now. If you’re composing your own music, you’re more talented than I am. For my first game, I utilized royalty free options (incompetech and bensound), but now I hire a composer (I do still supplement my soundtrack with royalty free options if it’s for something inconsequential). I don’t use many sound effects, but when I do, I just look for free options online.

Step eleven: Coding I use Ren’py because it’s free and easy to learn (provided you don’t want to do anything too complicated). There are tons of resources online to teach you how to use Ren’py, both from official sources and unofficial sources. I’ve never posted in the forums myself, but the people there seem very kind and helpful if you get stuck. (If anyone wants to see how I code, specifically, I’ll do a Part Two for it, but I have to warn you that my games are the coding equivalent car repairs done with bubblegum and duct tape.)

Step twelve: Playtesting Make sure your game works. It’s pretty straightforward. You can even recruit some guinea pigs--I mean, friends to help you. (I don’t have any friends, so I do this part on my own.)

By this point, a year or so will have passed (give or take, depending how long your game is, how much time you have to work on it, and how much of the work you plan to do by yourself), and with any luck, you’ll have a game! Posting your game on itch.io is free, but putting your game on steam will cost you $100.

Like I said to the person on patreon who originally asked me about my process, making a visual novel is a lot of work, but I encourage everyone to at least try it and see if you like it.

Remember the early oughts? Remember Web 1.0? And Geocities and blinkies? What about Flash games? It was only last month that Adobe Flash finally died its ignoble death.

In the spirit of those times, let resurrect some old LJ memes! (Think Buzzfeed quizzes but with less data mining (not to say that didn't happen)).

When I looked at my tags page, there were 159 entries tagged ‘meme’ which I guess is because memes were what I used to say when I didn’t know what to say. In the early oughts, I wasn’t new to the internet, but I was new to the interactive version of it presented by LJ and its clones. In order to seem interesting, I did a *lot* of memes.

As I explored back in my journal, I found a lot of memes that are now defunct, but I wish were still functioning. Like the Friends Icons collage, which seemed to be a bit of code that gathered all your friends’ default icons into one picture. And Quizilla seems to be a Teen Nick site now. Other links looked extremely sketchy.

Challenge #12

In your own space, resurrect an old meme. Leave a comment in today’s post at The Fandom Snowflake Challenge on DW saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The challenge: look at the list of old memes below (I’ve checked all the links to be sure the ones below are still functioning). Pick out one that appeals to you, follow the instructions, post in your journal, and then come back here and share! Make sure to tell us which one you did.

Here Are Some Choices:

Desktop/Wallpaper screen shot - take a screen shot of the background (desktop for computers or wallpaper for mobile devices) on whatever device you are using. This one was originally just desktops, since it predates tablets and phones becoming so ubiquitous. Post the pic in your journal.

I Write Like . . . - Paste a few paragraphs of your writing into the box and see which famous author has a style most similar to you. It doesn’t have to be actual fic writing; you can post your latest blog post, but the longer, the better the tool works. Although don’t go too long; it will just cut it off. It will generate a little bit of code with a banner, which you can post in your journal.

Music shuffle - go to your favorite source of music that can be shuffled. Your main Spotify playlist, iTunes, your YouTube music playlist. Hit shuffle. Write down the first line of the first twenty songs that come up. When people visit your journal, they have to guess what the songs are. Strike through the ones that have been guessed with the guessers name at the end of the line.

What Number Are You? - click on the phrases that describe you, and then post the text that you get along with your number in your journal.

What Kind of Shoe Personality Do You Have? Anyone who knows me knows there’s no way I would pass this one up. I should get my shoe mood theme back on my journal.

Fail Cat - If you have a PC: Open paint, close your eyes, draw a cat. Post the results. If you have a phone or tablet: Open the notes app, close your eyes, draw a cat. Post the results. (I do not know what program you would use if you have a Mac without something else installed like Gimp or Photoshop, Macs do not seem to come with a default drawing program).

First Line - Post the first line of the first entry of each month for the past year in your journal.

The Dewey Decimal System - find out which category in the Dewey Decimal System you are.

Nearest Book - 1. Grab the nearest book; 2. Open the book to page 123; 3. Find the fifth sentence; 4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions; 5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

Spell Your Name - pick a category: movies, books, TV shows, musicians, songs, etc. Spell your name with the first letter of each. Your real name, your username, you choose!

Kleenex Moment - Pick the top five movies that make you cry, and tell us what the Kleenex Moment is (when do you reliably reach for the hankies).

Which Historical Lunatic Where You? A series of yes or no questions, which will give you a block of text to copy/paste into your journal!

Which SciFi/Fantasy Character Are You? Gives you a pic to post in your journal.
