liviaswann: For my first TV job out of drama school, I don’t think I could have wished for a better one. The last three years on Legends have been an absolute playground for me - ruling hell, getting trapped on tv, dressing up like a cowboy, fighting aliens and robots and becoming an animated princess and that’s only, like, four episodes. It’s a show full of laughter, joy and heart, a show that champions misfits and celebrates found family, and working on it has been one of the best experiences of my life.

Speaking of family, I can honestly and happily say that I have found family in so many of the cast and crew. Truly beautiful souls, inside and out, who are genuinely funny, kind and look out for each other. It’s been an honour getting to share so many wonderful moments with them and I will cherish all the memories we’ve shared. I know I’ve made bonds for life and I couldn’t be more grateful.

⁣⁣And of course, Astra, the Queen of Hell who became a full blown witch. I grew with her, admired her and she taught me so much about strength, resilience and taking shit from no one. ⁣⁣

I actually wasn’t going to put the show on this list, when I first planned it, because I thought the show finally made it – everyone was talking about it and it got recognition everywhere, even had its very first own comic coming out, and … then of course The CW had to go and cancel it after a Cliffhangar, teaming up with Warner to tell us: Yes, everyone who is not a hetereonormative white male superhero, who never makes mistakes, deserves to end up in jail forever. So yeah, here it is again. The best Superhero Show ever made ,that is not actually about Superheroes and is not named „The Umbrella Academy“.

The ones, who were in Season 7, still ended up going to Time Jail at the end with only Sara Lance confirmed to ever get out again by the Comic, which everyone who works for The CW, Warner, and DC deems as a fitting ending it seems.

I liked the part with Sofia Boutella.

Once again I find myself watching a movie for Sofia where 90% of it is people dancing and my only context for whether or not they did it well is whether the other characters clapped or did those dismissive b-boy gestures. At one point they healed a dying old man with the power of tango rhythm.

I enjoyed the tango dancing a lot more than the street dancing, and even though I think the whole conceit of the movie was that they were combining the two, I feel like they only actually did it in the very final scene and, it was alright I guess? The important thing is that they won the big dance thingy, thus solving all their problems, once and for all.

Falk Hentschel played a remarkably unlikeable protagonist. Every time he was on screen he was making the same confused expression, all of his character actions were needlessly foolish and poorly motivated, and he handled his crew's completely valid complaints by essentially saying "Come on guys! I know you need to eat and sleep to survive, but the big dance tournament is only six weeks away!"

In the funniest part of the movie, they cut to an audience reaction where only about half the crowd was actually smiling and cheering. One woman was staring directly into the camera, frowning and smoking her cigarette like she was beyond tired of being an extra on StreetDance 2.

Heavily formulaic and generally unremarkable. Considering I don't care about street dancing at all, it wasn't too bad.

“Swap Me, Baby” Movie Review

Swap Me, Baby is a body-switch comedy in which expectant parents get to see how the other half lives, which of course brings to mind Freaky Friday (in fact, one of the characters quips, “I should have watched the original Freaky Friday… damn you, Lindsay Lohan!”).

After a brief encounter during which the condom broke, straightlaced Lily (Kimberly Leemans) is about to be a single mom. But she still wants her baby daddy, a freewheeling Frenchman named Philippe (Falk Hentschel) to be a part of the process. So, they decide to rent a cabin in the middle of nowhere so they can iron out the details without any distractions.

But Philippe brings hallucinogenic edibles and while he’s wandering around in the woods, he finds a magical treasure chest. He opens this “Pandora’s box” unleashing a magic spell that swaps his soul with Lily’s. At first, he thinks he’s tripping (which is illustrated with animated butterflies and the like) but since he’s in Lily’s pristine, no-drug-zone pregnant body, he can’t be. When the box starts spouting riddles, the couple realizes that they must solve them in order to return to normal.

There are potty and sex jokes in Swap Me, Baby that might be funnier to guys, but actually, this is a great movie for expectant moms/couples. It has some positive messages about being in the family way so to speak, and it’s done in a humorous, lighthearted manner which, thankfully, is very well done by the actors. Each has to “act” like the other (swapping the exaggerated French accent, for instance, as well as their mannerisms) and it works well in terms of the physical comedy. There are some other magical occurrences, like a gourmet feast appearing in the cabin out of nowhere, plus some time travel. Nothing is ever explained; you just have to go with the over-the-top premise.

There are some moments of depth as the superficial, sudden “couple” shares stuff about their pasts and before long, Lily understands why Philippe is so seemingly irresponsible, while Philippe sees that Lily has her reasons for being so regimented. On the other hand, there is a little padding to round out the feature-length run time, such as musical montages set to upbeat pop songs and a bit of receptiveness.

Swap Me, Baby is a feel-good rom-com that anyone can enjoy, and it comes out just in time for Father’s Day!

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

November 17th - Hawkman

Similar to his female counterpart, Hawkman possesses an extremely convoluted backstory with multiple confounding retcons and rewrites.  The following is an abbreviated summary that is likely not entirely correct.  

Long ago in ancient Egypt there was a prince named Khufu.  Khufu and his wife Chay-Ara had discovered a crashed space craft that originated from the distant planet Thanagarr.  This ship was composed of components forged from the alloy know as Nth Metal and possessed other-worldly properties.  A ceremonial knife was made out of this metal and Khufu’s rival, Hath-Set, killed both Khufu and his wife with the dagger.  The mystical nature of the knife combined with the spiritual process in which the two were killed created a cycle of reincarnation wherein Khufu and Chay-Ara were successively reincarnated over the centuries.  

In the Golden Age, Khufu was reincarnated into Carter Hall.  Carter would go on to become an archeologist and museum curator who specialized in ancient Egypt.  He discovered a cache of the Nth Metal ore and discovered its gravity nullifying properties.  Driven by memories of his past life, Carter used this metal to create a winged harness facilitating highs-speed flight.  He additionally forged a bevy of weapons.  He created a hawk-themed outfit and set off as the superhero Hawkman.  

Hawkman helped to form the Justice Society and also served as a member of the All-Star Squadron during the Second World War.  Along the line, Carter met Shiera Sanders (the contemporary reincarnation of Chay-Ara).  Together they created a similar set of wings and she became his partner, Hawkgirl.  

In the Silver Age Hawkman was Katar Hol, a peace officer from the planet Thannagar.  He and his partner Shayera Hol traveled to earth in pursuit of an escaped criminal.  On earth, the pair used their Thanagarian technology to act as the heroes Hawkman and Hawkwoman, ultimately joining The Justice League.  It is possible (likely) that Katar Hol is also a reincarnated version of Prince Khufu who just happened to be born on a different world.   This version of the hero perished at some point yet was reintroduced as a contemporary version of Carter Hall.  

Actor Michael Shanks portrayed a version of Hawkman in the television series Smallville; while actor Falk Hentschel has played the character in the shows The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.  Actor Aldis Hodge is set to portray Hawkman in the upcoming movie Black Adam.  The hero first appeared in the pages of Flash Comics #1 (1940).
