Games I've Seen in my Dreams
So I don't really have any reoccurring dreams necessarily, but lately I've noticed that I have a couple reoccurring events within different dreams. One of those is that I will often find myself in front of a bunch of bootleg game cartridges with custom labels (usually implied to contain romhacks or homebrew stuff), and then I get really excited to buy all of them and take them home to see what is on them (this would probably be my actual reaction in real life). I usually then wake up disappointed that it wasn't real. This has been a thing in my dreams for years now. The earliest time I remember it happening was in either late middle school or early highschool. I thought it would be fun to try and recreate some of the ones I've seen and give a brief description of them. The first cartridge I included above is from the first time I remember dreaming of this kind of thing, and all the other ones are from very recent dreams. I might do this again sometime if the dreams keep happening and I keep remembering them. Maybe I'll even put some effort into photoshopping them next time lol.

2021 - 2022 - 2023 - 2024
Can you believe there's barely 10 days left to the year?? Because I can't! Time to lay my feelings bare again!!!
So I definitely slowed down quite a bit compared to 2022, but I still made enough to fill the template and, in spite of everything else, lots of life development things happened these last 365 days that I think makes 2023 one of my best years in recent memory :)
I have less to say about the art this time. The drop in quantity checks out when I stop to reflect on just how much time I spent on each one. I definitely don't have as many sketchy works to show off this time either (probably in no small part due to the fact that I've also slowed down on Detco) - and that's probably owed to having spent most of my art effort this year drawing for other people, be it commissions or fan projects, and I already know that I'm more inclined to take risks when I have just myself to please. It's not a bad thing, that's just how it is.
I suppose my one observation of this year's body of work is that the vast majority of it is quite ambitious. Real pushing-my-comfort-zone stuff, but it's more of a polished brand of risk rather than the kind you get sketching ideas on the spot. Some examples:
February - both a collab and a thing that became a fan cel intended as an autograph piece at a con
April - simultaneously a gift and a very personal piece
June - silly comic (anything humorous is automatically out of my comfort zone)
August - community project + comic page redraw that really tested my ability to find a new style to play with
September - made to become tangible merch (it did)
October - redraw of my very first digital piece
November* - character design from text description only and formal reference sheet commission (my first ever)
December* - digital watercolor + fake children's paperback cover
*active WIP, not yet complete
It's not that much (really, it's average output for me) but I will take my wins where I can get them, especially since this is pretty much the scope of my art projects this year. Didn't really have much time or energy to write, or make more models, or scan more cards, because... ya girl was too busy getting a promotion/raise, moving out, enjoying the best con experience of her life (so far), volunteering, meeting lots of new people, dating again, having general fun, eating good food, trying new things, finishing a monthly art challenge for once, playing creative romhacks, waking up to new career opportunities, etc. etc. etc! It feels like so much happened this year!!
I tend to be harsh on myself and often feel like my life is not going anywhere, but this year really made me feel like I'm finally gaining some momentum again. And like... I don't expect (or want) to live life in the fast lane or anything, but stagnating isn't good, either, and with every passing year I have to ask myself with a little more sincerity what my future looks like.
So all that said, thanks very much for sticking around and suffering me another year <333 Who knows what 2024 will bring!! But for the first time in a while, I think I am looking to it with more than just a resigned "meh" and I hope the same for anyone reading this, too.

"video games rumors" anon here, the type of rumor I'm curious about your opinion on are the kinds of rumors you'd hear in a playground; i.e. something like "If you groundpound the fountain star 2401 times you can unlock Luigi in super mario 64!" or "If you do all of these super convoluted steps in pokemon you can get mewthree!" etc etc, if that's too broad then maybe just playground rumors specific to pokemon.
My original ask was spurred by a video by midnight krick, covering a pokemon iceberg from an alternate universe where the last pokemon games were gold and silver. Do be warned though that the video heads into creepypasta territory, especially near the end.
OHHH okay yes i get you now! sorry maybe that was obvious before but i felt like there were multiple directions that ask could have gone lmao
i am old enough to have experienced a good chunk of video game rumors firsthand, though not to the extent of proper 90s kids - i kinda got the tail end of it i think? and most of the rumors i heard were strongly proliferated through the internet, like the experience of seeing one of those fake Mewthree videos during pokemon gen 3 on really early youtube when i was too young to understand how those videos were made and couldn't tell the difference between romhacks and reality yknow. while i heard about rumors outside of pokemon (i was fascinated by some animal crossing ones back in the day because i had a brief stint with wild world for instance) i have to admit i've been This Autistic about pokemon since i was little and most of them... were pokemon rumors lol
eventually around age 9 i found out that most of the rumors i had seen floating around were edited images or romhack videos and i actually got into really early romhacking at that age... and made my own fake pokemon rumor video and uploaded it to youtube and everything, but i felt so guilty immediately after uploading it that i took it down. which i regret now because i genuinely think it may have gotten a couple people to fall for it. here's a reupload of it, i rescued it from my mom's ancient PC:
youtube
i'm kind of enamored with this thing i made because even at the age of 9 i tried to make it thinly believable and intriguing - lugia was only available in gen 3 through events or xd gale of darkness, so it was a pokemon people would want but couldn't find, however not a mythical or a made up fakemon. the three kanto birds being a requirement ties into the 2nd movie, but since they're in kanto and not hoenn it becomes infinitely harder to test and disprove this, not just because of the level requirement but because of the need to trade them over. i was really thinking about it i guess lmao. of course the audio glitch making the cave and lugia battle silent hurts the believability.
unfortunately there's no "unregistered hypercam 2" in the corner cause i used some other software... i think it was called camstudio? idk i might be wrong and i'm too lazy to look it up rn. anyway sorry for going on about that so long this ask just made me think of it and i wanted to talk about it lol
@ the second bit of your message, i have not seen that video in my suggestions and now i'm probably gonna watch it later, ty! i appreciate the warning but let it be known that i love pokemon creepypastas, i met my qpp and my closest friends through pokepastas, a certain pokepasta character when searched on google has like three pieces of my art near the top lmao - point is i'm REALLY desensitized and instead of being offput that actually makes me want to watch it more, i unironically love that shit to this day

bw2 patch notes i'll be implementing in my funny little romhack that doesn't change much just offers a different unova experience:
pidove line's attack and special attack stats will be swapped along with a more special attack oriented moveset. hurricane's included
watchog's illuminate is replaced by guts. adjusted moveset includes such hits as fake out, chip away, and last resort bc i couldn't think of a better STAB move to cap off the learnset
archen line has a new secondary ability in rattled, learns outrage through level-up and has access to glare and pursuit
it might be neat to touch up some gen 1-4 mons as well but like idk who to tackle there so im gonna try to hone in on gen5 fellas for now. im still open for suggestions tho wahey

For the longest time I thought:
1) Fake Out was a Dark type move (it made sense since it "cheats" the opponent into flinching with a, well, fake-out),
2) Dusknoir was Ghost/Dark (it's the Grim Reaper pokemon and it's always depicted as/around villains??? Idk it's the Vibe),
3) Cut was, some time in the past, in some brief venture into official but non-canon games, a bug-type move (this may have come from a romhack somewhere, though I know it's not Crystal Legacy because SmithPlays saying he was changing Cut to be Bug type was what made me look it up and realize it was never not Normal),
4), Chansey was turned part Fairy when the type was released (like the two other Kanto pink blobs)
The cut thing could be because Scyther is a bug-type that's usually shown cutting things and can learn the move via TM in Gen 1.

Todays rip: 03/04/2024
Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X
Season 1 Featured on: GilvaSunner's Highest Quality Video Game Rips: Volume 7
Ripped by turdl3
youtube
A lot of the time I spend on here is dedicated to explaining things in SiIvaGunner's history that I feel like I have a good grasp of. That is part of the intent with the blog - both to highlight noteworthy rips to people already deep in the sauce, but also to try and convey to people outside of the bubble, more casual fans, just how fascinating this whole channel and its goings-on are. But even though I consider myself to be very well researched on the channel, there are still times I'm caught off guard: I still don't know what to make of He is Back., I was taken aback by everything I'd missed in regards to waterwraith pokos, and rips like If Pazuzu Sneezes Do You Still Say Bless You? have sent me down little detective hunts for parts of internet history I'd entirely missed. But even amidst these, Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X still sort of sticks out in my mind - because I've been baffled by it ever since I found SiIvaGunner back in Season 1.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is a game with a lot of history on SiIvaGunner, most evidently due to its lead composer, Hiroyuki Sawano. Channel oldhead dante has been taking cues from his incredibly distinct style of music for a majority of the Christmas Comeback Crisis' soundtrack, such as with 9来4s, and several rippers have followed suit from Season 1 and beyond with rips such as Kill & Learn (Recut Ver.). Xenoblade Chronicles X was just one more game to rip Sawano's music through - yet, as you might have already noticed, Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X *isn't* using Xenoblade Chronicles X. "Zeno Blade Chronicle X" is a fake game, of which we see plenty of today, but back in March 2016 it was an odd one out. Just two months into the GiIvaSunner channel's life, it was (to my knowledge!) the first time that all the pretense of a rip being of actual video game music was dropped. Its unfortunate that the original comments section was lost with the GiIvaSunner termination, but I'm certain it was gleaming with confusion even back then.
But like...what *is* Zeno Blade Chronicle X? The joke died out within Season 1 after just three rips, and since then it's only been referenced within Season 3's nostalgia week and Season 7's April Fools day event that I covered yesterday with Our Sweet Pastry. The three rips made during Season 1, and the Season 3 throwback rip, all follow the same joke - arranging music from Xenoblade Chronicles X in the style of...EarthBound, of all games? I suppose there's a lot of context here I'm missing out - perhaps its a sly jab at ROMhacks such as the EarthBound Halloween Hack that Toby Fox made before Undertale, perhaps its poking fun at the many mediocre "(song) but in SNES instruments!!" arrangements that are all the rage especially nowadays...or perhaps EarthBound in particular just has such a strange sound to it, one so unbefitting of the tone of Hiroyuki Sawano's music, that it sounds very funny arranged in that style?
Either way, its what gave us Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X, and through all of my confusion and feeling as if I'm not getting the joke, it is still REALLY funny in isolation. The thumbnail's abhorrent crunchiness, the "Megalovania" guitars contrasting so harshly with the bleep-bloopy main melody instrument, the harsh cymbal crash that stays throughout the song as a layer of percussion - it sounds like its falling apart on itself throughout the whole thing, yet carries itself through the entire battle theme in an oddly charming way. I mean, the lead instrument sounds kind of similar to the one used in Collision Clouds, there's something so oddly charming about that particular form of melody! There's so many reasons why the Zeno Blade Chronicle X rips have stuck in my mind, but its mainly just that I'm puzzled by them...like, are they meant to be rough around the edges, or is that just due to their Season 1-ness? Are they poking fun at anything in particular? What led to this becoming popular enough with the team for them to officially begin ripping Fake Games just two months in?
All those thoughts race through my mind every time I'm reminded of Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X - all the while I'm banging out to the tune itself. Xenoblade Chronicles X's Battle Theme itself is already fantastic, and this silly goofy take on it keeps that spirit underneath all of its crust, preserving the game's legacy in the strangest of ways. This is one mystery that I don't know if I'll ever truly *wholly* understand (though I'm sure making this post will lead me on the right path at least!) but it, at the same time, embodies so much of the fun of Season 1's unpredictability! None of us watching ever knew what to expect from the channel, and I'm sure nobody watching had "SNES Bootleg of Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U" on their Bingo card. That unpredictability was so novel then, and still lives on today - and in some ways, it all reached its first new high with Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X.

Your Actions Mattered
CW: Misgendering, brief allusions to transphobia not related to misgendering, and depersonalization.
So, I collect bootlegs and stuff. I know. Riveting stuff. Skipping the sarcasm, I do like fake things. They’re fun to pick apart, see how well they can work. I’m not the biggest fan of ROM hacks surfacing on the internet, though. They weren’t made to be resold.
So when I saw an obvious mistake on the labels of FireRed and LeafGreen I was curious. The labels were switched. I bought them, they weren’t cheap, but it was funny looking. Nothing else was wrong in the pictures, just mismatched stickers. I collect bootlegs, I knew when something didn’t look legit.
When they arrived? Well, it wasn’t weird, but it was something I thought was interesting. They were packaged together with string, somebody had never heard of safe transport. They matched the switched stickers, green on FireRed and red on LeafGreen. This was a bonus or this seller was red-green colorblind. Happens to the best of us, I guess.
So, for the joke of it, I booted up the FireRed (which despite the sticker was FireRed) and chose Leaf. It was the standard fair, until I checked the TV (which is way more important than talking to your mother.)
It wasn’t the Wizard of Oz reference I was hoping for. It was Stand by Me? That wasn’t right. It wasn’t like it was The Galatic Railroad reference in the next remade game, but it stuck out to me. Leaf had this reference made for her to fit her better. (Because girls can’t like Steven King or something.)
Oh well, I thought, talking to the mother character, “All boys leave home someday.” That’s true, for the boy character. I’m playing as the girl character. They dream of traveling. That’s just plain weird, I tried to rationalize maybe the sprites flipped somehow, but when I checked my trainer card? Nope, it was Leaf’s. That’s odd. I kept with the plot though, saying hi and getting to choose my Pokémon. It wasn’t important though, the text was more. It was put as Red’s name. Always Red’s name whenever Leaf was addressed. I had made a custom name and was playing as Leaf, that shouldn’t be happening.
This was clearly a romhack then. Like I said, I don’t like romhacks sold on the internet. That’s a cheap buck off of someone else’s work, but maybe I’m a hypocrite, I buy bootlegs. At least most people know it’s actually heinous to do that. I kept playing, up until the first gym. Did you know you can check the statues before challenging the gym? It says your rival’s name, for the sake of consistency, we’ll call him Blue.
It didn’t just say Blue’s name. It said Red’s. Leaf’s name was never on it when I challenged the gym and won. I checked the card, it didn’t have the Boulder Badge. The game still acted like I did though. Romhack.
Well, alright, somebody hates Leaf. I put the game down, moved to the other cartridge. I had planned to play at the same time anyhow. I chose Red this time and the same thing happened.
The Wizard of Oz played on TV, and all girls dream of traveling. Leaf’s name was there instead of my custom name. Leaf had the spot before and after Red, and he never even got an actual badge for it.
These hacks were clearly supposed to be together. I looked for a swap hack online with every keyword I could think of. I found nothing. I’d dump the ROM but I have my suspicions now that this was somewhat deliberate. A weird artistic choice, but an artistic choice nonetheless. I messaged the seller and got nothing, so it had to be, right? Maybe if they actually message me, I’ll share it, for now they’re in cartridges and unshared files on my computer.
The same things were happening, the dialogue never hiccuped. Red was seen as Leaf, and Leaf was seen as Red. There wasn’t any differences in that until I got to Copycat. Every hacker’s favorite character. Probably.
“My name is Leaf! It’s not Red! Who’s even Red?! Hmm? Quit mimicking? But, that's my favorite hobby!”
Clearly Leaf was very frustrated. I know games aren’t real, but this hack seemed to be a sad one. I’m a sentimental sap, it was working. I decided to bring this annoying child a Pokédoll, if only to see what the silent protagonist had to say. Her dialogue doesnt change until you talk to her again after learning Mimic.
“I still don’t know who Red is. I don’t want to copy him, I’ve never heard of him. Is it really that fun to copy what I say and do?”
“You bet! It’s a scream!” Was Copycat’s response. I don’t think Leaf would’ve agreed with her.
Red’s dialogue was the same for Copycat. Maybe it’s the quiet nature. It was odd, nonetheless. In the department store that changed however, in the SNES section anyhow. Normally when you check the sports game it says Dad might like it. I checked the other ones and they read after their game genre;
“Would Leaf like this? Who even is she? You don’t know…”
They didn’t know each other. I thought maybe this hack was leading up to that cliche of Red taking her spotlight, even though he didn’t get any badges either, but that wasn’t the case. He didn’t know who she was either. Every Rocket talked about a different brat, but even friends and family didn’t recognize them as each other. Maybe that was the point, with the swapped colors. My joking of that was bait for this hack’s story.
Now, Blaine’s gym. His gimmick is the quiz machines. Hard for young children, painfully easy for someone older who’s a Pokémon master. If you answer wrong, you fight a trainer. Given the hack status, was this changed? The answer? Yes.
-Have you gotten any badges?
No. I hadn’t, technically. I didn’t have to face a trainer.
-Have you helped Kanto?
Yes. That was the wrong answer, I had to face a trainer.
-Are you Leaf/Red? (It changed depending on which game.)
The answer is a surprising yes. I had gotten it wrong. Surprising, considering all had told me that I wasn’t myself.
-Do you know Red/Leaf (It also changed.)
No. They had made that clear.
-Do you want to?
No was apparently the wrong choice.
-Do you know who you are still?
Yes or No doesn’t matter. It always gives you the trainer battle. I tried.
Nothing else seemed very sketchy to me. I went back around places I could a few times, but I didn’t see any more discrepancies. I went to the League and showed a kid his place in things. It didn’t change the ending though. My trainer for that run wasn’t there, it was the other. This proved true for the other game. Even when I checked my trainer card, it was empty.
They were champions. They had defeated Rocket. It had gone to the other person, and yet it didn’t at the same time. I’m not sure what this hack means. Is it just to be cruel to fictional children? To rip their dreams away? Or is it about something that hits too close to home? They were never acknowledged as their names either, after all.
Again, I’m a sap. I have two games and plenty of Pokémon. Even after the Sevii Islands, nothing changes, dialogue wise. It’s the same flipped script. I’m not sure if this was the ending of this art piece, if the hack is even that. It could be nothing at the same time. But all art has an interpretation. This is a sad one. I don’t like this sad story.
So, I connected them together, heading to the Pokémon Center. Just for completion’s sake I got version exclusives. I then proceeded to trade them. The trainer IDs and names weren’t my custom ones either, they were Red and Leaf respectively. I hadn’t mentioned it before, but not even their Pokémon had been their own. I found it fitting that some could come home.
I know they’re not real, it’s just a game, but after trading and battling a little? Finally getting to know each other after a whole game of confusion?
I hope they’re friends.

well this is happening. this will be a collab w/ my good friend max (@mymomentinthesun)
if you'd like to blacklist either for "not interested" or "don't want to see spoilers," the tag i'll be using is #gen ii tag. i'll also make a sideblog in the event of Actual Momentum, and when i have a title...
upon our agreement of "if you make the pixel art, then i'll code the game and/or make the dex," and max's subsequent fulfillment, i now have to make a dex. and maybe a game.
i don't intend to post a lot of the dex, only "basics" i.e the starters and the regionals. altho i don't doubt my ability to make a full dex, if you'd like to request or give ideas for some fakes, send me an ask. if the designs suck ass that's my fault, obviously
i have... never worked on a romhack before, and have very little experience w/ code. i've always wanted to make my own, so the passion is there. and my inability to do pixel art is rectified by max's.

Got another creepy Evertale ad again last night. Shame the actual game is some random gacha that's nothing like this. I'd actually really love some horror Pokemon parody or romhack. (I haven't really been able to find one that I've been interested in besides Pokemon Dreary.)

VIRUS HUNT! EXPLORING A NEW SONIC VIRUS
“Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(USA,_Europe).bin.exe”
                                         AlteredAlex988
Posted July 16th 2012 11:45AM
Salutations readers, I’ve returned from my short hiatus! I planned on taking off a bit more time to focus on school, but recently I’ve been getting a lot of messages asking me to cover a new SEGA related virus, and who am I to deny the people of what they want?
Today we’ll be talking about the new “Sonic ROM Scam” that’s been going around on AGESISLAND.NET, a popular hosting site for Genesis/Megadrive ROM files.
I was notified of its existence first by my pals in a few PM’s, but it was hard to ignore when it flooded these forums with thread after thread about a new “Haunted DarkNet Game”. As if that actually means anything!
Rampant rumors aside though, I have the Virtual Machine set up, and screenshot software ready. The file runs on XP (luckily the one disc I still had!) so getting it set up wasn’t hard. Now with the EXE sent over, we can get started!
I bring you guys, Sonic the Trojan.
Tumblr media
Upon opening, of course, it doesn't load into an emulator because it's not a real rom file, and it instead brings you to your typical install wizard.
You see these kinds of malware scams a lot with rom websites, having you install their client for rom usage, and like a million toolbars and adware to boot.
However opening this install wizard gives us something rather unique.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trademark "SEGASEGA-SBI" (no clue) it offers a download for 3 packages.
I'd assume the rom is one of them.
Installing them just adds three icons to your desktop, so that's that for the install.
Here we have Sonic1.exe (lol), and two ZIP files.
Tumblr media
I downloaded WinRAR on the VM but both zips are password protected. We can try cracking them later though, for now we have a haunted evil deep web game to play, don't we?
Tumblr media
So far so good. I'd assume this is an emulator without its usual options, just running a rom hack.
I wonder if it's just a basic freeware emulator? Only difference here from the actual game, is Sonic's eyes are way open.
Tumblr media
Starting the game we're presented with Green Hill Zone as normal, with Sonic's sprite being identical minus the open eyes.
...Actually, had to look this up to be sure, but the stripe on his shoes is gone too. Could’ve fooled me into thinking it was a quirk of Sonic 1, it’s been a bit.
It plays identical to Sonic 1, so any question of if it's a romhack or not has been answered. I'd be very surprised to see a fake Sonic trojan of all things be the fangame to mimic Sonic 1 physics perfectly.
Well, with the game loaded, I guess I'll update this post with findings. If I miss anything, reply so I can correct it!
