Sure, you’ve had a couple step moms, but only one father who happens to be the protective type. You grow up in the f1 paddocks because kimi doesn’t like being apart from you for too long. even with his marriage to jenni, he has her watch you during his races. Just the racing part though, he commonly totes you along with him during anything he can, even media duties. due to his own upbringing, your schooling is the highest of priorities, but it’s still a guarantee you know how to drive anything by age 16. He wants you to be prepared for anything life throws at you, though of course he wouldn’t let you do it alone.

A Guide to Lewis Hamilton and Peter Bonnington

Recently I have been convincing people to become obsessed with whatever Lewis and Bono have so instead of repeating myself unnecessarily I have decided to make this handy dandy Bible guide to their journey together!

1. The Basics

Lewis and Bono have the longest running engineer and driver pairing in the history of the sport.

Sir Lewis Hamilton: if you don’t know who he is then I’m slightly surprised you are here but I am not here to judge. Sir Lewis Hamilton is a British F1 driver who has won 7 world championship titles with the Mercedes team! He’s a legend in the sport. He made his debut with McLaren in 2007 and has been with Mercedes since 2013.

Peter “Bono” Bonnington: Bono is senior race engineer for Mercedes. He has been race engineer since 2011 where he worked with other 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher. After Schumacher left Bono was paired with Lewis and they have been together ever since! He has been widely regarded as the most successful and most well known race engineer.

Note: for some reason there was a misconception going around that Bono was 10 years older than he really was. Let’s put this to rest: his birthday is 12 February 1975. Source

It’s Hammertime: maybe one of the most famous Lewis radio messages. Bono explains that during the years where radio messages were more strict they needed a code word to let Lewis know it was time to really go all out. So they suggested “put the hammer down” before it became “it’s hammertime”. Source (timestamp 18:17)

2. The Partnership

Out on track the race engineer is the critical link from the team in the garage to the driver. They must analyze all the data and determine what the driver needs to know without overwhelming them.

Esteban seeing yn as a nepo baby but being besties with mick is a bit hypocritical don't you think?

I can see lance and her being friends because they're definitely faced similar things during their childhood i.e calling as nepo baby by others.

I also think lewis and her wouldn't get along and thats purely because of how fiercely she's defending max. Like I'm thinking their crashes and even if they were getting along, after that and her comments about them there would be a fallout.

I want mick and yn to make up in their own terms but i kinda agree with yn said. There's nepotism in f1 world and f1 isn't just talent. Connections are a big part of it and lance, mick even max and other drivers i cant remember right now HAS CONNECTIONS. But that doesnt also mean they're untalented but there was a huge advantage to them being son of something important or relatively known and we can't disregard this fact.

Mick is talented (along with lance but he's not the important character right now) and calling him surname merchant while isnt fair but its also right... His dad is mf michael schumacher... And also there's more expectations for him but even in real life i dont see anything much from him but then again he's young and haas definitely fucked him up.

It is definitely hypocritical, but I think her close connection to Max is probably the tipping point for him. Esteban is also very good friends with Lance. But I think there’s a bit of a one sided rivalry between Esteban and Max that Y/N falls foul of in Esteban’s head. Also, Esteban has watched Y/N go from being everywhere with Mick to being everywhere with Max and I think he has somewhat taken that personally on Mick’s behalf, thinks that Y/N swapped Mick for Max because of Max’s success. Which again is because of his own resentment of Max’s success. But I think Esteban sees her very much as “had it all handed to her” even more than any of the other drivers because she didn’t even have to drive for it, she just comments.

Her and Lance have known each other a long time, and she is friends with his sister, so they’re cool.

I think there’s nothing Mick could ever have done or achieved that wouldn’t have had him called a surname merchant. His dad was one of the greatest there ever was and that definitely largely worked to his disadvantage in F1. While Max got all the connections but 1% of the pressure because his dad was a nobody in F1, Mick had the weight of his last name on his shoulders the second he appeared on a go kart track. Max made Verstappen a brand, Mick came in already carrying a brand (those two are such good foils of each other). But the Schumacher name definitely had a part in getting him where he is, Guenther even said it in DTS, that German sponsors want to be in business with the Schumacher name. I don’t think he’d have had that Haas seat if it weren’t for his last name (he would have eventually got a seat somewhere else but Haas specifically picked him up for the sponsors imo).

I think in relation to Y/N specifically, he’s just hurt these comments are coming from someone he considers family. Someone who has supported him his whole career, who now seemingly turns around and thinks he’s rubbish. He’s like “you always told me I was going to be great, cheered me on, but now you’re just listing everything I do wrong to the world”. And I think he’s partly right. I think what Y/N said when she was trying to be Mick’s cheerleader was different to her real/professional opinion and she wasn’t fully honest and Mick wasn’t fully prepared to hear those things. Then on the other side Y/N is thinking “what I said isn’t nearly as harsh as what I’m thinking, I went out of my way to take it easy on him, and he’s still mad”, because she knows she has gone harder on Max and he’s just brushed it off. It’s very complicated. Also consider that a lot of those quotes would have been massively taken out of context.

Re her and Lewis, definitely were not in a good place in 2021 (we will see more of that eventually) but now I see him being a bit more like “okay she’s the Max Defence League let her do her”, and he doesn’t pay much attention to her, nor her to him.

Me, thinking of Mercedes' track record of actually getting driver's an F1 seat:

#f1 #formula 1 #formula one #mick schumacher #i hope it works out and he's back on the grid in 2024 but like merc doesn't have a good track record #like Nico Michael + Lewis were all established drivers when they joined #Valtteri had a few years with Williams under his belt before he moved #by most accounts George would've had another year at Williams if their first choices had accepted the merc seat #because he allegedly wasn't the first or even second choice #Esteban had to take a year out because he lost his seat until the Renault seat opened up #... I'm pretty sure that's all the drivers that have been under the Mercedes umbrella whether the actual team or the driver academy #& we saw Nyck nearly every race weekend in the merc garage so often for years it was almost a running joke #1 race weekend & a conversation was apparently all it took for him to get a seat with alpha tauri #merc hasn't really brought any drivers onto the grid other than George and Esteban #i would consider them both the exception rather than the rule especially Esteban #because his already established connections to Renault assisted him with getting the seat more than I would say his work with Merc did #& i believe merc used talks with Esteban & Daniel as potential threats to Valtteri's seat in order to motivate Valtteri to sign #rather than seriously considering either of them because resigning Valtteri had been their goal until 2021 #which was when Valtteri made the decision to leave the team as he wanted more stability than a year by year contract #there's always BTS manoeuvring & politics at play with any f1 seat #Esteban until the Renault move had been under the merc umbrella with teams using a merc engine #he is still managed by Toto #i believe he's one of the few drivers who are & the only one on the grid which is why he's the exception not the rule #Merc has about a good track record with young drivers as Ferrari or McLaren do #spoiler alert; Charles & Lando are the exceptions not the rules #oh god mick i love ya i hope this move works out and we'll see you on the grid in 2024 #say what you want about red bull but a solid chunk of the grid has connections there for a reason

12 Questions about F1 through the years

1. Who or what got you into F1?

My dad. He grew up in a racing/car family and automatically transfered that love to me when I was just five days old and he held me up in the hospital to show me the German GP of 1999 on TV. We always joke I've watched F1 since I was born, which is no lie. Since then, we've seen almost every race together. We've also gone to 15 F1 GPs together.

2. Who was the very first F1 driver you supported? Do you support them now? Have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?

Michael Schumacher. My dad is a Jenson Button fan and he's convinced I started supporting Schumi just to annoy him. I don't fully remember why I chose Michael, but my best guess is I fell in love with the red car that kept winning. I love him still and still hope he gets better someday.

3. Who’s your current favourite F1 driver?

After 16 years of supporting Sebastian Vettel, I ended up supporting Max Verstappen in 2023. My dad's been supporting him ever since his debut, and made him his main since Jenson retired. However, I didn't get there that quickly. I adored Max when he began F1. Got annoyed with him a lot in 2018 and 2019 when he kept having run ins with Seb (fave bias I guess), but once 2020 I grew to adore him and in 2021 I fell in love. He'll never reach the same level for me as Seb did in my heart (he's my hero after all, since I was 6), but I love him sm already.

4. Is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? What made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?

I love so many F1 duo's, but my two faves are Sebastidan and Lestappen.

Sebastidan got me out of my high school depression phase in 2017. I remember feeling extra down when Seb lost his chance at the title that year in Japan. I was so frustrated and watched video's of them as teammates the whole day. I've adored them since and while they aren't a fanfavorite, I can't help but enjoy the bits and pieces we still get from them.

Lestappen. I got into them last year during their - sadly short - title fight. The history they have, the connection, is something so unique. They also seem to become better friends with each passing month. I'd love to see them as teammates someday.

5. Do your parents, siblings or relatives have a favourite team and/or favourite driver(s)?

Dad's a Max and RB fan. He hates Mercedes and especially Toto. His past faves are Senna, Hill and Jenson. Mom has watched F1 since she's been with dad (1985), but never got into it. She always liked Nico Rosberg though!

6. Do you have any favourite races? Are there any that stand out to you the most?

Belgium 2014 as it was my first live GP. Belgium 2018 as it was the first time I saw Seb win live. Abu Dhabi 2012, which was epic Abu Dhabi 2021, I'll never forget that day Brazil 2008, it was mind blowing.

And probably many more!

7. Do you have a favourite circuit? Can be from the past or from the current calendar.

Spa. It's my home track which I've been visiting since I was a toddler. And Zolder, for the same reasons.

I also adore the Red Bull Ring, Yas Marina circuit and Monza.

8. Have you ever been to an F1 race in real life? Feel free to tell us your experience going to one if you like.

15 in total! 14 times the Belgian GP (would've been 15 if it weren't for 2020) and 1 time the Austrain GP. It's always amazing! The organisation of Spa has changed for the better as well!

9. Have you ever met an F1 driver in real life?

Several times the whole grid before 2020, because it wasn't as difficult to get close to them. In Spa they organized hours long signing sessions at la Source for everyone with a weekend ticket. Since then I've seen them mostly from a distance. The closest I've come to talking a while to someone was Charles in 2018, Seb several times and Daniel also a few times. I still get butterflies thinking about it <3

10. Do you have a favourite F1 car? If so, what is it?

RB19 (2023), it's such a precious car <3 Seb's 2010 RB. The Ferrari from 2004. Brawn GP car from 2009.

11. Do you have a favourite one win wonder?

Not really. Unless, you count Oscar's sprint win from last year.

12. Do you have any favourite quotes from the F1 world? This can either be inspirational or hilarious.

Hi, I was reading multiple post from you related with technical term and it's fairshare of drivers controversies. I want to ask about old F1 era mind games, I know one example is the brocedes downfall but it is still relatively new era. In your post What happened with Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, you mention mind games as well. So maybe you have more details on that particular behavior. Thanks.

I don’t think they’ve seen them as much in recent years because there hasn’t been that sort of competition that was slight bit of mind games between Hamilton and Verstappen in 2021, but it was mostly with how they were to the media

Mind games sometimes referred to a psychological warfare is just how does one driver get in the head of the other driver and the reason why this has such a big impact is so much of racing is dependent on concentration, but also the drivers mindset going into a race or qualifying session and if one little thing throws them off it can screw up the whole weekend 

Like you’ve got things like Michael Schumacher, staying in the bathroom for ages before a qualifying session to stop Nico Rosberg from getting to use the toilet before qualifying and in the end he had to pee in a bin or a plant or something. It seems in significant, but if someone’s got a particular routinely like to do before qualifying for the race and then something interrupt that it can throw them off. Schumacher apparently also never acknowledged or mentioned Rosberg at all - like in engineering meetings, driver briefings etc (can’t think of a driver who this would work better on tbh). Schumacher would also walk around shirtless

Another one is Nigel Mansell and Ricardo Patrese. This was down to wait and I remember Riccardo Patrese was very fit and had a whole diet and exercise regime. Mansell kind of ate what he wanted to, but before the start of the season, he practically starved himself so that he was lighter than Patrese 

It’s just how can you get into your teammates or competitors head in the best way and drive them fucking insane usually works better with teammates because they’re more likely to know what makes the other one tick and have direct comparisons on data and that sort of thing

I decided I am going to rewrite that response Tumblr shredded after all. So the original post was from a Vettel fan who called out HAM and LEC fans for being so upset about the DSQs when there had been plenty of drivers in the past getting disqualified.

First of all, it has been a while since someone was disqualified. And it was actually Sebastian Vettel at the 2021 Hungarian GP for not having a sufficient fuel sample after the race. I'm pretty sure people were upset then too, as it cost him his podium.

As for plenty of drivers, there have been a total of 93 (out of 775) drivers who have been disqualified over the years. Of the current grid 7 drivers now have a DSQ:

Daniel Ricciardo (2014 Australia - fuel mass flow too high; 2019 Japan - brakes infringement)

Lewis Hamilton (2009 Australia - misleading stewards; 2023 USA - rear skid below minimum)

Sergio Perez (2011 Australia - illegal wing)

Esteban Ocon (2018 USA - fuel mass flow too high)

Kevin Magnussen (2018 USA - fuel consumption too high)

Nico Hulkenberg (2019 Japan - brakes infringement)

Charles Leclerc (2023 USA - rear skid below minimum)

But the rear skid being below minimum has only ever led to one other DSQ: Michael Schumacher at the 1994 Belgium GP. Something by the way, I was already thinking of a few weeks ago when I was making my "predictions" for this weekend:

In case you don't recall or heard about it: the Red Bull drivers were thought to be lifting through Eau Rouge to avoid too much plank wear, after they set up the cars for wet weather, and the race ended up being in dry weather. Brrrake did an in-depth video analysis on this at the time:

Interesting unrelated tidbit: Martin Brundle has 8 DSQs. Looks like this mostly stems from his team Tyrrell getting disqualified, because all but one are from 1984. In fact, the top 3 drivers on this list have a combined 23 DSQs, with 21 of them from 1984 when they were driving for Tyrrell.

Okay so after brainstorming with @carsgonyoom this is how Thirty has 2 championships (and Lewis gets to keep all 7 of his)

Lewis won his rookie year in 2007 - so before Thirty, Michael Schumacher was the last winner for Ferrari. Sorry to Kimi

Thirty joined F1 in 2015 aged 18 (to let max keep his youngest driver thing) so she is a bit older than Charles but not by much

She then won in her second season, 2016, so no win for Nico Rosberg (and then he quits Cus he’s a sore loser in this AU). This makes her the youngest F1 champion but no one knows this

And then her 2nd win is 2018. Which irl was Lewis but because we gave him his rookie year victory - he still has the same amount of wins.

And then Lewis wins 2019 & 2020. Max wins 2021. And this story is set in 2022 where I will be taking lots of liberties with the driver standings :)

So at the start of this fic - Thirty has 2 championships, Lewis has 7, Max has just won his first

The 24-year-old has faced new challenges as the third driver behind Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but is learning what he can as he seeks a return to the grid.

With a surname like Schumacher in motorsport, you might think there’s a lot of pressure. But for Mick Schumacher, there’s nothing but pride. Son of the seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, the 24-year-old is currently a reserve driver for the Mercedes team, which is headed up by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. After making his F1 debut for the 2021 season, Mick raced in the pinnacle of motorsport for two years before making the switch to this new role with Mercedes in ’23. Keeping himself incredibly busy with countless hours on the team’s simulator to make the car the best it can be, the German is still learning and keeping himself ready for a comeback. Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Schumacher discusses his new responsibilities, the lifestyle of an F1 driver and his unique friendship with Michelle Yeoh.

SI: You’re still having to train a lot for this role. What are your favorite exercises to do to keep fit and what does the diet look like for a racing driver? MS: I’m a big fan of weights, just weight training and being in the gym and spending time there. But on the other hand, cardio is quite important for us. I enjoy doing that and running is a position where it’s quite easy these days just to grab a pair of shoes and go for a run. So it’s a bit easier than biking, but whenever I’m home and it’s nice weather outside we’d go out and go bike riding. For diet, this year obviously will be different. I tried some different things to see how quickly my body changes and reacts so I had a period where I was doing quite a lot of cardio. I lost like five kilos [just over 11 pounds] and then built it back up. SI: You have a special friendship with Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, which quite a lot of people found surprising. Can you talk a bit about that? Obviously, it’s through Jean Todt who your father worked very closely with during his time at Ferrari. MS: I mean, she’s a great person. We spent so much time together, especially when I was young. Every time we met up or we saw each other with Jean, with everybody involved, we always had a great time. I’m lucky to have her as part of my life. SI: With your time away from F1, is there anything you think you’ll do differently if you come back to racing full-time? MS: Yeah, for sure. There’s a lot of things that I’ve learned now that I didn’t know before because now I’m able to see two drivers, and see how they work in that car. I feel like I could bring a lot of input to a new team and a lot of knowledge. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have been great to work with because they’re both very nice people and great teammates.
