We had the pleasure of interviewing BEGINNERS over Zoom video! Difficult times can make or break people. As a society, we've been going through doomsday fatigue, whether since the pandemic started, the Trump administration took office, or before that even. Some people have been struggling more than others for a long time. On top of it all, the rent is too damn high, our rights are falling away, the world is on fire (literally and figuratively), and it feels like everything is entirely out of control. The tiniest thing could be that last straw that separates any of us from our sanity. For BEGINNERS, the alt-pop project of L.A.-based Samantha Barbera, one way to deal with those feelings of despair made itself abundantly clear: say f*ck it. The extra indignant sting on top of everything inspired almost a superhero origin story, whether she's the hero or an agent of chaos to be seen. In addition to all that, Barbera went through a breakup during what felt like the implosion of the world we'd known while watching her rights as a queer woman shrink. Instead of imploding, she got into the studio. And that's how BEGINNERS' If the World Is Ending EP was conceived: as an explosion. Barbera is always writing songs, and putting this record together came after a steady stream of collaborations in studios all over the West Coast. The lead single, "I Hate That I Love Brooklyn," is a raucous anthem full of spikey punk rock guitar that represents the spikey feeling of a toxic relationship—with a person, with the news, with a whole damn city or country. The song started with a hat. No, literally. Producer/Artist and frequent collaborator Matias Mora (K. Flay, Broods, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,) had a blinged-out hat with the word Brooklyn on it and convinced everyone that it had to be where the song was set. For Barbera, collaboration is the key to success. She co-produced and co-wrote all of the songs, but those intimate moments of sharing her personal stories with her collaborators helped tap into a sense of connection that brings her art to life. Over eight months, the World is Ending EP was written and recorded in various home studios. BEGINNERS is a DIY project with punk roots spanning multiple scenes and genres. It has always been fully independent with no record label or advances, but with those all-important master rights and creative control. The project has seen massive success in the world of music syncs. Disney used the song "Start a Riot" in the trailer for the 2021animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon. It promoted outreach and interest from new fans worldwide who searched the song on the internet and commented en masse. Apple also tapped BEGINNERS for three ad campaigns, and New Balance had the band perform in a commercial alongside a slew of famous women Olympic athletes. The music has also been played in ads from Target, Samsung, and Adobe, plus in numerous shows including The Walking Dead, The L Word, and the Netflix series Money Heist and Elite. In Netflix’s Sex/Life, the band got a name drop and a full, two-minute-long dance scene—an unheard-of placement. We want to hear from you! So you're a Witch with ADHD or a really short attention span.

Write everything down, everywhere. Journals, docs, notes on your phone. Write down any half baked spell idea you may have, the oh! That's what that can be used for moments. Write it all down.

So you need do research but you can't focus enough to read any information.

That's okay, bookmark a bunch of pages about the topic(google searches you may have made, articles you may have found, pictures you might want to reference but can't focus on) and read them later when you can sit and focus.

Can't find anything but you swear to the divine that you had it a second ago. Check the shelf/cabinet/drawer. What shelf/cabinet/drawer the one you should dedicate to witchy stuff of course.

A shelf, specifically for witchy stuff that you haven't used yet but will need. When you're in a hyper-fixation but don't know what to do you can reorganize it like 1000 times and I promise you'll always go "wow so glad I found this!"

But I don't know what to do with all my witchy books!

That's okay! I don't either! BUT you can put the ones you reference the most in front of the ones you haven't read yet but want/need to and put the ones that you love but don't really need to reread right now behind them. If you can see it, you can find it.

Where do I keep all my crystals!!

Jars! Big jars, small jars, long jars, short jars. JARS!!! AND ALSO CUTE BOXES!! That you can put on the tippy top of a shelf/cabinet or the shelf in like a closet.

Spice racks are Diveine

Use a spice rack to all the spices you use the most. Label each container on the wrack so that you can see which spice it is from like across the kitchen (or wherever you keep the spices in your adobe).

What programs do you use to make gifs? Please give us a little insight, gif-wizard!

It’s all the same tools everyone else utilizes! The primary ones are FRAPS (there are many similar programs but I’ve only ever used FRAPS and I find it the easiest) for screen captures and recording, and Photoshop for all your post-processing needs like splicing gifs, editing each individual frame, and compressing any captures. 

FRAPS can be downloaded from here for free, though all your captures will have a watermark at the top.

Photoshop you can acquire through many different means. The more dubious the method the better because f*ck Adobe.

A few years ago I was “vetoed” from the college I was teaching.

Today I came back.

And I feel like Daenerys taking back Kingslanding.

In all reality and to this day, I still have no clear idea as to why I was vetoed and why they pushed me out. I suppose it is because the Academic Council took a situation personally and decided against me.

What did I do?

I was mad, sure. And I continued denouncing how the people in the council decided to use their power against me and how these individuals acted in their worst intentions. Sadly, since I had no proof of their ill will I could not take this up to the authorities (not that I was hoping to get anything back from the authorities either: Mexican corruption is the root of all the problems.)

The main thing was that, under the law, they did nothing wrong. My contract ended and there is nothing in the rule book that says that they were meant to renew my contract. Under the law I did nothing wrong too. It’s one of those gray areas in which someone simply acted upon a wish.

The thing is that today I was rehired by the school.

Why?

Simply put, there are no other teachers willing to give those courses and I’m the only teacher/individual in my city willing to do it. Sure thing, everybody wants to teach the basic courses on anatomy and illustration and shit, but when it comes to digital stuff most of the teachers are scared. I gotta say, the professors have not updated their methods in quite a while and though some theories are still applicable today, the school’s program is in a dire make over (the program expects the student to know Adobe Flash, for f^cks sake!)

So, the Academic Coordinator had to go against her ill will and rehire me.

She had to bite her own tongue and swallow it, go back against her own word and rehire her own sworn enemy. In all honesty, I have no problem with the Coordinator and she says she doesn’t have a problem with me. I have no problem with her, but I don’t consider her a friend. My relationship with her is polite and cordial. Do I think she’s emotional and she thinks with the stomach? of course I do! And apparently she thinks lowly of me, even if she doesn’t express it. But either way, she realized that we need each other mutually.

The other thing is that the Academic Council is integrated by the same professors. Since it’s a very small college, it’s only a handful of professors that we have right now. So, it’s those same professors that, apparently, voted against me in and vetoed me. And it’s those same professors that not only don’t know how to teach the classes that I teach, but have no idea how to deal with the students. They had to face their own lack of humility.

The moral of the story?

Don’t do wrong to others. 

Everything comes back to haunt you and if you act shady, shady things will happen. I have now a class and I am back to the same college that apparently kicked me out of nowhere. Now they are the ones realizing what a powerful enemy they have gotten.

But since I live by that same saying, I won’t be doing them shit. But I will quietly retrieve them from my confidence and thread extremely carefully around them.

Why am I sharing this?

First, this is a bit of a validation topic that is giving me hope and muse to write lately.

Second, this is one of the shadiest places I’ve been. Not only against me, but also, against each other. If you read this and you feel like people are acting with ill intentions towards you (in here or in your RL) know that comeuppance does come and judgement will be passed upon those who wronged you.

Third, If you did act shady, go back and show some repentance. Not to sound all Biblical, but you are attracting bad karma upon you. You’re probably too young to realize it, but shit will happen. Don’t do it.

today && tomorrow i’ll spend the whole time finishing a final project from college ( i should send to my teacher today but adobe really loves to f*ck me and decided it won’t work on my pc ) but after that i’ll be free to give some of my attention to the drunk boi. i really appreciate your patience. i know i owe some asks and everything, but don’t worry, i’ll answer everything. in this meantime, there’s something i want to talk about... 

i just want you guys to know that i’m very excited about season 2 and that i would love to receive new rpers from castlevania. with the new season, i believe new fresh blogs will show up and that's a good thing. i’ve been inside many fandons, i mean, some of them i just tried, because it was all very closed and unfriendly. there are very few fandons out there i can say that welcomed me despite everything, which were friendly to me and encouraged me to continue. and i honestly think the whole tumblr should be like this. 

many people give up on their blogs because they can not find a way to interact with other people in their fandom, or receive no encouragement. this has happened to me before. and that sucks, you know? this should be about fun. i'm not saying that you cannot be selective with who you rp ( i'm kinda selective too ) or that you're bound to rp with everyone that comes to you. no, what i'm saying is to be kinder to people. more encouraging, more receptive. just because we don't intend to rp with someone doesn't mean that person cannot find another partner in the fandom. let's make people feel good here. it's not about competition, it's about creating a pleasant environment for everyone. an environment in which everyone would like to be.

i have my own problems too, everyone have their flaws && limitations and that’s okay. i cannot handle duplicates very well, for example, i always feel anxious and insecure about them ( except for a few cases ) but i'm working on it myself and i'm going to improve in the future. i want to meet and hug you all, even duplicates. even if we don’t interact or rp often, i’m here to listen to you guys as a friend. just get your time, get your rhythm, but really let’s try to be polite, kind and receptive with the new && older rpers.

Finally transcribed my interviews, re-organized my interview notes, and ~analyzed my findings~, holy crap took me Too Long

Cleaned up the competitor analysis so it’s less Jank and more Succinct

Referring to our interview notes, competitor analysis, and the results from the card sorting experiment last week, did a MoSCoW feature prioritization to refine our goals and inform our final lo-fi wireframes

Almost solidified final lo-fi wireframe designs (tweaking as we make our high-fi’s lol)

Started creating our high-fi wireframes using Figma (my first time using that tool!)

Completed our brand testing. From the results, we picked the color palette and type of logo that we’re going to move forward with

Currently working on writing up the on-going case study...slow process but it’s fun overall!

General Updates:

Received a new mentor from Built By Girls! She’s a senior product marketing manager and such a chill person!

I dropped a class cause f*ck it lmao, and am working on not feeling too guilty about it. Midterms still kicking my ass tho so I didn’t get as much work done relating to UX as I wanted to this week.

Missed the Adobe Max conference cause I was too lazy to tune in 😔
