Kara Pendergrass: Ha, this actually isn’t an easy answer because her vibe is so different from the other characters that I don’t often listen to music that evokes her specifically. She is a determined ray of sunshine, not out of any driving act to put kindness in the world, but as a defense mechanism. If you don’t take anything too seriously or hold it too close, no one can hurt you with it. Because she serves as my earthborn “Shepard,” so-to-speak, she’s also someone who learned very young that you might not get a tomorrow, so get your kicks today. And that’s why I like this one:

Muriel Aslany: I have a similar problem with Aslany, because she just doesn’t quite lend herself to my usual writing aesthetic of “sad dude playing a guitar,” but I heard BURNS' cover of ‘Ho Hey’ while I was working on the latter part of Fugue, and then promptly went off and wrote the scene where Aslany will finally see Sam again after the reaper war. I love this song for her, because the cover is infused with so much wistfulness and longing, and as hard as she is on the outside, that’s the inner Aslany. Someone who desperately wants to belong, but doesn't know how.

The Lumineers version of the song has always felt like a ‘Yang song in general to me because of the lines, “So show me family, all the blood that I will bleed.” That whole bunch is a group of misfits who needed family. They found it in one another, and it’s worth bleeding for.

This is a tough question for both of them, because I’ve almost purposefully let their past histories stay a little murky. Both of them have childhoods they try not to think about. I have a lot of daydreams about Sam, Kaidan, Aslany, and Pendergrass hanging out at the orchard doing dumb shit like climbing trees and having chicken fights in the lake after the war, because they all had interrupted childhoods and I like the idea of them having the chance to reclaim them – together.

You've been trained since four, bloody knuckles and scars. You have a burn on your face from your mother, a broken woman trapped in her nightmares when she hurt you.

You go to UA, convinced no one else can beat you. You don't think about the fact you didn't get first in the recommendation exams- the girl who did literally makes things from her own body. You know your father is debating an arranged marriage.

You go to UA, thinking no one is more famous then you.

“Shepard Izuku?!?” is said when a green haired boy enters the classroom.

Shepard, the hero of the galaxy. The woman who took down the Repears. Who convinced a group of villains to use their shielding Quirks to protect Earth, Palavean, Thessia, Sur’Kesh, Tchunka and more. (not all could be protected but they tried so hard) You know she has a cousin- or one of her husbands do who is human and has publically spoken about wanting to be a Hero like All Might. You just didn't expect this.

Todoroki Shouto goes home to comment on this to his sister. His father overhears and demands he beat Shepard. That he needs to prove himself.

okay just saw a gifset from mass effect 3 and honestly. i have some thoughts about the scene it was showing. in mass effect 1 you have to choose whether to save Kaidan Alenko or Ashley Williams. i always choose Kaidan bc he [ checks notes ] doesn't fucking hate aliens for existing. anyway after this you can romance whoever you chose, depending on the gender of your Shepard. so i play fem! Shepard exclusively and always save Kaidan- therefore i can romance him

i've only romanced Kaidan once. i'll explain why i will NEVER do it again.

in mass effect 2, you work with cerberus because they brought you back from the dead and can directly help you bring down the collectors (the big bads of me2). during one of the required missions, you meet up with Kaidan again. he says a bunch of bullshit about how he can't trust you anymore and it's fucked up that you're working for cerberus, whatever. basically he doesn't join your crew and he stays pissed.

in mass effect 3 he becomes a companion character again. you're required to have him during the mission on mars (one of the first in the game) and there's a whole fucking scene in the beginning where it's just you and him. and- i kid you not- he spends the WHOLE scene talking about how he "can't trust you anymore" and "can't tell if cerberus is controlling you through your implants". at this point, YOU HAVE SAVED MORE HUMAN AND ALIEN LIVES THAN YOU CAN FUCKING COUNT. YOU HAVE KILLED TWO REAPERS. YOU ARE GOD. and this country ass motherfucker looks you dead in the eyes and goes "i just don't know if you're the woman i fell in love with 🥺" SHUT UP. SHUT UP YOU WHORE.

I love that little smile he gives Shepard in the med bay after Eden Prime.

I love his slip of the tongue on the Citadel in ME1 when he indirectly tells Shepard he thinks she’s beautiful.

I love his dry comments when you take him along groundside in ME1 and his snarky remarks when you talk to him back on the Normandy.

I love how annoyed he looks when Joker interrupts that almost-first kiss in front of the lockers.

I love that tentative smile he gives Shepard at the beginning of ME3.

What it is about kind male video game companions that male gamers absolutely HATE?

I've seen it happen with Dragon Age's Alistair, Mass Effect's Kaidan, and even lowkey KOTOR's Carth Onasi (emphasis on kind, not necessarily nice, cause dude had a bit of an attitude in the beginnning). Now I'm seeing it with Gale of Waterdeep from Baldur's Gate 3.

Men hate him! Admittedly, many women seem to also hate Gale (Though from what I'm observing, it seems to be because his romance is bugged in a way that doesn't recognize when you've rejected him, so to many it comes off as not taking no for an answer -- but that's the fault of the game, not the character). The other reason I'm seeing from women is that he supposedly doesn't respect boundaries, citing his relationship with Mystra, but... were yall listening to him at all?

1. This goddess took interest in him as a *child* prodigy, became his mentor, and then his lover??? That's sus as hell.

2. It's not like he and Mystra had personal boundaries set specifically for their relationship, and he decided to cross them, it was that Mystra has general magical limitations for magic users in general, and Gale thought he would be an exception because she treated him as special, and because his reasons for pushing his magical limitations were to restore a part of her she'd lost. I've also seen people say he downplays that as a simple mistake made in his youth, but from the actual conversation with him, it's very clear he regrets that so?? I don't get it. (maybe I'm misremembering or missing more of the story, I'm only at the beginning of Act 2)

But this post is a reaction-rant to seeing too many male creators on tiktok hate on Gale so badly it's becoming obnoxious. And their reasons are so weak, yet fuel hatred so strong. They just find him so annoying, and I guess to each their own, but I don't get why, and I don't get why men always seem to find those kinds of emotionally available, kind for the sake of being kind, male characters annoying.
