Year-End Poll #53: 2002
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Nickelback, Ashanti, Nelly, Nelly and Kelly Rowland, The Calling, Vanessa Carlton, Linkin Park, Fat Joe, Usher, Puddle of Mudd. End description]
More information about this blog here
We're starting to see post-grunge start to take the place of alternative rock in the pop charts, with the rising popularity of Nickelback, The Calling, Puddle of Mudd, Creed, 3 Doors Down, and other similar acts. Despite the immense popularity (or perhaps because of it), post-grunge continues to be a controversial label among rock listeners for the genre's tendency to favor pop-friendly melodies and "simpler" subject matters.
Speaking of controversial rock subgenres, this year also contains a single from one of the best-selling debut records at the time (going 12 times Platinum), Linkin Park's In the End off the album Hybrid Theory. And with that (or parallel to that) came the rise of nu metal and rap metal in the mainstream. It's notable because, at least not since glam metal in the 80's, there hadn't been a subgenre of metal that really blew up with mainstream non-metal audiences to the point where it came to define that moment in time for many. (I know Metallica was able to spread past the confines of genre listeners, but that didn't really lead to a thrash or heavy metal craze among people who wouldn't have already been predispositioned to listen to it).
Nu metal is also incredibly fascinating to me personally because it really shows how "genre" can differ whether you're approaching it from a music-listening perspective or a marketing one. If I had to boil "nu metal" down to a simple set of characteristics, it would be "a subgenre of metal that favors shorter runtimes, takes heavy influences from hip-hop sound and culture, and is often associated with the early 2000s". But if you asked marketing teams at the time, "nu metal" would probably be defined as, "the popular rock music we can't market to the alternative rock crowd". That could be why, to this day, you often see bands like Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Staind, System of a Down, and even Evanescence lumped together under the descriptor, even though I think they don't all have much in common other than the time period, song length, and popularity. If you're marketing on the radio, it makes more sense to squish them together instead of trying to split hairs over subgenres. Only a few (and by "few" I mean "one") of these artists I've listed will be featured in future polls, but I wanted to ramble about this anyway.
Anyway, despite the immense amount of money brought in by albums like Hybrid Theory, the record industry was still scrambling to find ways to get people to pay for music again. In 2002, Nokia released the first polyphonic ringtone, which allowed the phone to play several notes at once. With cellphones growing in popularity, this may be the solution the record industry was looking for.

"Red Wine Supernova" by Chappell Roan
MG:
There’s so much Shania Twain (I suppose, though if I’m being precise, I think there’s so much LeAnn Rimes on the Coyote Ugly soundtrack) in “Red Wine Supernova.” We’re in a boom period of re-examining, re-contextualizing, and re-appreciating late-90’s radio rock. It’s something Grooves N Jams never stopped doing; I remember where I was when I first listened to Third Eye Blind’s self-titled debut like it’s my own personal national tragedy. So it’s a bit surreal and, honestly, kind of deadening to bob on these waves a second time. I can feel us all, in this moment, careening toward Evanescence, Linkin Park, eventually Puddle of Mudd and Staind, and then the total death of radio for a second time. I think there’s a wont to put all of that on streaming and pirating, as though the medium itself was flawed and the music can be salvaged. The medium was flawed, but also, this sound was extremely easy to replicate and the imitators were often nothing more than fridge magnet poetry cloaked under a couple production tricks.
Anyway, I feel like Shania caught some short shrift during this period, so, unlike the general 90’s ennui I’m starting to feel, the resurrection of “You’re Still the One” via boygenius and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” via Chappell Roan is still fresh and delightful. Shania could be playful and camp in a way that our often serious, humorless pop culture really, really misses. Perhaps I’m missing the point and part of the joy of her quasi-drag and over-performed yelps is to bop along and not overthink it, but I’m here to overthink it. There are plenty of artists who could fit themselves inside of “Red Wine Supernova” (Rina Sawayama tried it with “This Hell,” for example) but Chappell is comfortable with performing in way that feels slightly waylaid by our current era of always on branding and universal blandness. She’s using her voice, flexing it and manipulating it, a commanding tour de force woman and a goofy, confessional girl by turns. It’s a stage show, for sure, but after years and years of single facet performers (professional mope boys like Drake and The Weeknd or Ariana Grande’s mumbled “yuh” or Charli XCX’s irony pop) it’s a delight to see someone prowl around like she does, fully owning her character, imperfections and all. In that way, she’s taken what Shania did – her kick your feet up and laugh friendliness – and added a layer of vulnerability on top by not trying to strangle every last drop of productivity from her margins. It’s possible to dislike Chappell Roan and that’s what makes her so loveable.
DV:
If I was a teen in 2023 I would be basing my entire personality around Chappell Roan right now, to the annoyance of everyone around me. Like others on this list, she has a way of encapsulating an entire world and attitude inside a single song and making you a part of it whenever you listen; unlike those others, at its most inviting Chappell's world is centered around getting drunk and naked in the most ostentatious way possible. MG and I didn't catch Chappell's tour this year due to "fuck LiveNation" reasons, but you don't need to see it live to realize that "Red Wine Supernova" is made for crowdwork, full of call-and-response moments and subtle punchlines. I say subtle; I mean, "Want me to fuck you" is tucked halfway through a verse rather than in a more obvious spot like the chorus. But in Chappell Roan's hands, everything seems obvious, belying the skill it takes to take a lyric this packed with obnoxious theater kid energy and make it irresistibly charming. "Red Wine Supernova" wears itself on its sleeve and demands you do the same. It's a dialogue between Chappell and the listener as much as between her and the girl biting her neck.

songs the Sakamaki bros would have sex or make-out session to
WARNING: NSFW (if you’re below 18, just don’t freakin’ read things like this, okay?)
Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: I just got this idea ‘cause an acquaintance told me she turns up the volume of her radio when she does it with her gf (that’s all the story ‘cause I ain’t curious about her sex life)
SHUU SAKAMAKI
No brainer. Classical music. PERIOD.
Sometimes it would be the violin covers or orchestra pieces he always listens to since he’s lazy to change the music
Other times, it would be songs that came out from a sensual mixtape
Most of them probably from Two Feet or Cigarettes After Sex
Or even from LANY or The 1975
A rare one from the playlist would be Ariana Grande’s off the table
Shuu likes it slow, teasing you during foreplay
But he ain’t a lazy lover
Likes it when he makes you feel every sensation
Also a sucker for comfort sex so get ready for sad songs
Probs from Mitski’s “I Want You” or Lily Allen’s “Littlest Things”
No BDSM
But if you want to, he can notch a few things 😉
REIJI SAKAMAKI
Another classical music fan
But this one likes the haunting pieces, ya know the ones used when you’re escaping a dark castle or running from a monster at the forest
Idk why he sees it romantic but for him it sets the mood
Thinks of sex as a means to be a sadist
What the actual fvck
Would also play Kiss of Fire by Hugh Laurie or Bei Mir Bist du Schon by The Andrew Sisters
Light BDSM
Would also test out his poison on you
He’s gonna make you cum either from pleasure or from fear
You like it either way so no complaining
AYATO SAKAMAKI
Welcome to the wild side
The music taste of this Ore-sama is undoubtedly rock
Heavy metal, pop, punk, goth, emo—the sound of the electric guitar in the background fires him up
I picture him turning up the volume so high he’s gonna hear complaints from the other brothers later on
Most of the time, he’d play songs from All Time Low, ACDC, Pierce The Veil, Fall Out Boy, Nirvana, etc.
He likes having wild and rough sex
Would probably leave hickeys
I also think he’s someone who would invite you out on a sex in public
Poor boy can’t keep his pants on
Would also pull up a prank where he would turn off the volume, insert the microphone, and turn the speaker back on so his S/O’s moans would be heard around the mansion
Also keeps a record of the moans as a form of blackmail
This jerk
Would get in a fight with Subaru for being so noisy
You’d probably not show up in the mansion for a few days because of that
But Ayato has his ways to convince you otherwise so fvck everything
“What a bad girl.”
“You’re the bad one, Ayato-kun.”
“Che! You love this Ore-sama so suck it.”
Suck what???
KANATO SAKAMAKI
The playlist of this one is as vast as the ocean
His music taste is a mix of all his brothers
So there are times he would play scary classicals or punk rock or sensual and playful based on his mood
I imagine him having comfort sex while My Immortal by Evanescence is playing in the background
But most of the time he’d play songs from Lana del Rey, Yohio, Panic! At The Disco, Blink-182, and Melanie Martinez
He actually turns the song “Tonight You Belong To Me” by The Lennon Sisters into a creepy one because of how possessive he is
For a sensual person, he prefers taking everything slow
Even your pain as he chokes you into oblivion
That’s some heavy BDSM sht
Would also play songs from My Chemical Romance like the ones from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge or I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love
If he’s feeling romantic (which is rare), he would play Doja Cat’s Kiss Me More or The Cardigans’ Lovefool
Tho tbh it’s rare for him to turn on music because he would rather listen to his S/O’s moans and screams of pain as her heart beats faster in fear and anticipation
Would only turn them on if his S/O starts being noisy
LAITO SAKAMAKI
Alexa, play Sexy Naughty Bitchy Me
Did someone say whore?
This slut has the horniest playlist ever out of all the brothers
You'd probably mistake him as a stripper
Most of the songs would be from Rihanna, Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Charlie Puth, Lana del Rey, etc.
Basically, mostly sex songs that are popular with teenagers
Would also have the same sensual sex playlist like Shuu has
He plays them all even if he’s being a bitch to his flings
Would most likely mess you up and make you begging for more
This slut
He is a mix of a wild ride with sadism and BDSM
His music and moans are so noisy Reiji banned him from having sex in the mansion
Even noisier than Ayato
Never stops being a perv even when he’s alone
Stay away from him at all costs
SUBARU SAKAMAKI
He’s emo. Period.
Whether it’s a slow or rough sex, there’s always an emo song playing in the background
Sometimes you ask him if he’s sad or what
“I am not sad. Why are you asking me that?!”
Poor baby car
He probs share the same music as Ayato’s but more on the self-loathing part
Mostly Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Pierce The Veil, Nirvana, and the likes
Is actually noisy he just doesn’t know it
He is even louder than the music he’s playing so the brothers would hear his moans than his S/O
This gives them the nightmares
They tease him later on about this, especially Shuu and Ayato
“You even said ‘scream my name, louder’ the fvck”
“I did not say that.”
“Oh yeah sure while she’s giving you the head.”
“I DID NOT!”
The living room will be in chaos again much to Reiji’s dismay

Hi! 🌸I hope you're having a nice weekend (and you're taking care of yourself!)
For the ask questions, 2, 25 and 46.
PS: I hope your hands got better! 🤍
Hi! 💜 I hope you're having a nice weekend too! My hands got worse but I'm taking care of them as much as I can :')
2. What music did you grow up on? Describe your parent’s music taste using four songs.
I grew up with the music that my parents always played in the car <3 They didn't put on the radio, but rock records. When I listen to Bon Jovi, for example, I'm automatically transported to when I was a child. I'm very fond of him and his songs. They also played ACDC, Guns N' Roses and Evanescence along others. I adore them.
Time later I formed my musical taste from musicians like Kurt Cobain. I think he was the one who marked me the most :')
About the four songs, I would say... Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi, Knockin' on Heavens Door by Guns N'Roses, You Shook Me All Night Long by ACDC and Beat it by Michael Jackson 💕 My mom loves Michael Jackson and ballads, my dad loves rock and metal <3
25. What were you obsessed with when you were younger?
Warrior cats lmao 😭 ngl I loved that books. I still love them. They marked a great period of my life and led me to meet my first Internet friends! I had no one who knew the saga so I had no one to talk to. I used to rol play in forums and later I downloaded Amino to join a community :') I still have the IGs of the people I met there.
46. A simple pleasure from this week.
Do most of my exams, definitely. It makes me feel so relieved, it's great haha. Also rest after spending hours making diagrams of my notes.
This week it has been raining every day, so I would add writing at night with the sound of rain <3

What songs from 90s or early 2000s that makes you instantly reminded of InuKag?
me personally like Westlife's "I Lay My Love on You", SWV's "Weak", and Jordin Sparks' & Chris Brown's "No Air" because, well, the lyrics are just sooo them 😂
Hi @chit-a-to and thanks for the ask! And oh man, what a question!
Well I suppose first and foremost I’m gonna HAVE to include the songs from the specified time period that I’ve actually made song-fics for. This includes Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace (although yeah, that’s really more just Inuyasha rather than Inu/Kag specifically), and Eclipsed by Evans Blue. I hadn’t even heard of Evans Blue at the time when somebody hit me up one day actually asking for me to write a song-fic to that song; I told them I’d have to hear it first before making any promises and oh MAN, does that song just scream Inu/Kag. Once upon a time I also did a song-fic of Kagome actually singing I’m the Only One by Melissa Etheridge, and another old one that’s more just Inuyasha’s POV is a song-fic called What I really meant to say that features lyrics to Cold by Crossfade.
Besides all those, other songs that scream Inu/Kag to me, and have had me tempted to write song-fics over the years, include both Right Here and Believe by Staind (I would switch back and forth from each of their POVs, Inu/Kag on each side of the well and thinking about the other person), and Far Away by Nickelback taking place during the separation and concluding with Kagome’s return even though yes yes I know I know, okay I admit it, I like Nickelback, LOL. Then there’s another Three Days Grace song called Time of Dying, which is SO Inu’s POV as he lies there severely injured and thinking about Kagome (spoiler alert, he wouldn’t die). Does 2012 count as “early 2000s”? Because if I had the talent (and spare time) I would so make an AMV to Demons by Imagine Dragons. I would also do an AMV to The Red by Chevelle even though that’s in the same vein as Animal I Have Become and not an Inu/Kag love song.
If it takes place during the three-year separation and Kagome doesn’t yet know that she’ll eventually get her happy ending, or in a canon divergence after a bad fight regarding Kikyou, I Would’ve Loved You Anyway by Trisha Yearwood just screams Kagome. I suppose in that same vein, My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion is also a good post-separation song for Kagome, especially in an alt-ending where she never returns, and prior to him finding her again 500 years later she thinks he’s dead. I also once upon a time had an idea for a (now very off-canon) song-fic to Incomplete by Backstreet Boys that would’ve been like Kagome giving Inuyasha the jewel at the end of the mission and going back through the well but he can’t just let her go and doesn’t wish on the jewel and goes back to get Kagome in the end.
I’m trying to think of more songs, LOL, but I mean the truth is just about ANY song can work for Inu/Kag, especially if you open up the possibility of AUs. Like if I’m driving and listening to the radio, my mind can conjure up imagery for an Inu/Kag music video to just about any song that plays. Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen is perfect if we assume he will greatly outlive her, but that sort of thought is too bittersweet, LOL, oh and that’s also the ‘80s anyway so never mind. But take Taking Over Me by Evanescence, for example. That’s a Kagome trapped in the future, having discovered concealed youkai are still around and so she’s bound and determined to find Inuyasha again.
Oh wait okay, I’ve got it! See this is why I took a couple of days to think about it and compose this reply slowly as I rolled it around in my head. The PERFECT canon Inu/Kag love song, because it’s a tender love song and as a bonus totally has canine imagery, is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol! Okay yes, I’ll end on that note, because that really is a perfect song for them. That whole "would you lie with me and just forget the world" part brings to mind the different frames of them just lying back on a grassy hill, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of just being in each other’s presence. Inuyasha also doesn’t quite know how to say how he feels, and he needs Kagome’s grace to remind him to find his own. Yes, Chasing Cars. Plus in a modern AU where he would get the car pun, I could actually see a version of Inuyasha singing that song to her.
Thanks again for the ask!

What Kind of Music Slashers Would Vibe to Headcanons♪
This little thing popped into my head. Fyi, the canon timelines are thrown out the window for this so... Yeah.
Bring forth the bop~
RZ Michael Myers
Tumblr media
"Let my weapons be your children, let my armies be your damned. Try to suffer on in silence, try to stop me if you can." --- This Cold Black by Slipknot
I think he'd really enjoy metal in general. I can totally see him unknowingly stomping to some Marilyn Manson and Meshuggah, though the lyrics and message probably will just fly over his head.
He listens to some heavy shit, but probably all the more mainstream bands/artists.
The loudness and organized chaos of the genre fills the void in his soul and reflects the state of his mind, despite his stoic and non-verbal outer demeanor.
Someone please do everyone a favor and introduce Michael to some death metal. Admit it, it really fits his aesthetic.
This is just based on speculation, but I suspect a 70% possibility of RZ Michael resonating with Cannibal Corpse. Fight me.
He hates classical music with a burning passion. Back in Smith's Grove, they played Bach's Air Sul G on tap. (its canon in the first movie lmao) He hates it. Mikey no likey.
Freddy Krueger
Tumblr media
"No stop signs, speed limit, nobody's gonna slow me down. Like a wheel, gonna spin it, nobody's gonna mess me around." --- Highway to Hell, by AC/DC
Freddy listens to classic rock, period.
This guy is ngl a supporter of music taste discrimination. You listen to pop? Disgusting. You listen to Jazz? Disgusting. Classic rock is the epitome of all music.
He'll call you music-related slurs you never knew existed.
As stubborn adamant as Freddy is, he does harbor some guilty pleasures, including 70's hair metal and glam rock. Pshh. What a heckin hypocrite.
Some of his all time favorites are Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and AC/DC.
(Basic bitch)
*Hip thrust movements to go with his 'The Sprinkler' dance moves, Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N' Roses blasting in the background*
OG Michael Myers
Tumblr media
He doesn't listen to music, but if he did, he would probably enjoy Jazz.
Michael only listens to Miles Davis because he enjoys his music and can't be bothered to discover more artists.
Oml Michael I know Miles Davis is amazing but don't neglect other iconic artists plzzz. Someone please make him listen to some Teddy Wilson and/or Dave Brubeck.
I imagine him sitting stiff-straight on a rocking chair (he just likes how it moves), knife in his lap, rocking and zoning-out relaxing to 'Blue in Green'. (I love that piece)
#AfterHeFinallyKillsLaurie
#RetirementGoals
He also hates classical music because of the same reason as RZ Myers. Seriously, if either of them so much as hears the opening chord of Air Sul G, expect the speaker to be stomped to a pulp in a split second.
Bubba Sawyer
Tumblr media
Alright let's all be honest with ourselves... 70's pop and country is Bubba's shit.
Look me in the face and tell me he wouldn't adore ABBA, The Jackson 5, and Dolly Parton. Thats right you can't
Everytime 'Dancing Queen' starts playing on the radio, Bubba will drop everything and start busting down.
Ain't nothing and nobody stoppin him. Drayton is powerless against the supreme sovereignty that is ABBA.
But let's also appreciate the fact that our Bubster can motherfuckin get down. *wipes sweat from forehead + heart eyes*
He would also do passionate lip sync with his heart and soul, to Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You'.
50% chance of him starting to cry right after he finishes his earnest performance.
*Holding Bubba in your arms, rubbing comforting circles on his back as he bawls hysterically, incoherently babbling on about how much he loves you*
I also feel for some reason he'd really like Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
Thomas Hewitt
Tumblr media
"For one moment, I wish you'd hold your stage, with no feelings at all. Open minded, I'm sure I used to be so free." --- Citizen Erased by Muse
Y'know what I have a hard time imagining the type of music Tommy listens to. Kutos, Mr. Hewitt, you have defeated me.
siKE
(This is where I yeet the timeline out of the window y'all)
Thomas enjoys Muse, Evanescence, and Radiohead. (Fight me)
He just loves how emotional their songs are. He'd have one earbud in as he works away at his projects for hours. The music helps him concentrate, it is also a source of emotional support to him.
Hearing the heart-wretching lyrical content of 'Lost in Paradise' performed so beautifully by Amy Lee's angellic voice is really comforting to him. It's like hearing about another person's experiences. It makes him feel less alone in dealing with his emotional and mental turmoils and burdens.
The first time Thomas heard 'Creep' by Radiohead, he almost cried.
He also listens to My Chemical Romance sometimes. He only knows the Black Parade album, but he loves it. If 'Creep' didn't make him cry, listening to that entire album from top to bottom sure did. He started sobbing half-way through 'Famous Last Words'.
Tommy is emotional boi 🥺
Brahms Heelshire
Tumblr media
C l a s s i c a l
No matter how stinky Brahms is, you can't tell me that he's not classy.
Schubert is his bitch. Schubert's style tends to be quite majestic and/or dreamy, (generally) and can change color/sound very abruptly yet appropriately. (This is just my opinion based on experience with Schubert's pieces, but then I only know his piano pieces soo) (let's still cue that maestoso to scherzando transition)
But of course, Schubert isn't the only thing he listens to. He prefers the romantic period, so Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Shostakovich, Brahms, Schumann, you get the gist, all the staples. Oh yeah Elgar too. To be a proud English lad.
*Brahms swaying in the living room with the grace of a baby giraffe, engrossed in the beautiful melodies in Schumann's Kinderszenen.*
(Oml please check out 'Von fremden Landern und Manschen' and 'Kind im Einschlummern') (For those who play piano, they aren't that difficult too totally recommend) (Ok sorry I'm done now)
Brahms would totally waltz around alone to Chopin's waltzes and nocturnes.
Oh yeah apart from that classy shit, he likes to jam to meme songs.
"Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play---"
*cut to Brahms passionately fortnite dancing*
Listens to The Strange Man Who Sings About Dead Animals for a good laugh. (Please, all of his songs are gold)
Vincent Sinclair
Tumblr media
He'll have 'emo' and 'classical' with a side of metal, thanks.
I headcanon that Vinny McWaxy is an INFJ, so the boy is likely prone to crippling existentialism. It would make sense for some aspects of his music taste to reflect that.
*cut to Vincent sitting rock-still on his workbench/stool, hands hover in mid-air, staring straight ahead, some John Cage piece playing*
You'll never hear this from Vincent but he enjoys sexy-time music. He has this whole erotic playlist he listens to while working. (Boy likes to feel sexy on the job, I respect that.)
I think its pretty much canon that Vinny loves MCR. (Hello fellow emo piece of shit 👋) His favorites are everything by them really. A hardcore fan. He used to have MCR, P!ATD, and 30 Seconds to Mars posters plastered everywhere in his workshop until he had to remove them all to add to the intimidation factor of his waxy hell for passer-bys. For the record, he is very gay for Frank Iero.
On the metal part of his spectrum is mostly classic metal, groove metal, and thrash/heavy metal.
Rammstein, Pantera, Vildhjarta, new and old Metallica, Dream Theatre, Coheed and Cambria. His bitches.
He also uses music to scare victims when bringing them down to his workshop. *cue horror movie soundtracks*
*KI KI KI MA MA MA*
Is a whore for the dramatics when in a good mood.
*Lacrimosa by Mozart plays as he makes a point to bring the wax painfully slowly down toward a drowsy and petrified victim*
A lament for your upcoming death, pitiful human.
Bo Sinclair
Tumblr media
"The day has come for all us sinners, if you're not a servant you'll be struck to the ground." -- Beast and The Harlot by Avenged Sevenfold
Bastard boy is into dad-music™. (same)
Dad rock, classic rock, pop punk, punk rock, old school pop, his shit.
He listens to a lot of the same bands as Freddy, but Bo (generally) doesn't discriminate and explores a more diverse variety of music.
Its a fandom canon that Bo loves Avenged Sevenfold. I totally agree.
A7x is the perfect amount of cynical, political, and shred for Beauregard, (I hc that ge hates his full name so plz don't ever call him Beauregard)
He listens to the radio whenever he's at work. Whatever that might be.
Will NEVER admit it, but he thinks Vinny's music taste is dope as hell.
He'll turn off the radio just to strain his ears to listen to Vincent's music downstairs. No one will ever know that though. You don't.
Actually likes classical music too. Its not one of his main genres but there's one piece he really likes, Second Movement of Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major.
He never thought he'd enjoy this type of music. Its so.... Calm. He discovered that piece from Vinny's playlist. When he first heard it on his brother's speaker, he fell in love. It was one of the extremely rare cases in which he'd be committed enough to ask Vinny the name of the music.
Tiny shuffle for man-kind, huge fuckin step for Bo. Good job Bo, we're proud of you.
Also pleeeeeaaase message me or request stuff, I'm bored and have little inspiration 🦊
I might do a pt2 of this, since I didn't write many of the boys and gals🤷‍♀️
Also sorry if I've neglected some genres/artists (Like i've neglected non-piano classical pieces.... Bc ya girl is just a pianist), a person can't know everything😗

EVANESCENCE's AMY LEE: Why It Has Taken Nine Years To Record Follow-Up To Self-Titled Album
EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee spoke to Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station about why it has taken so long for the band to begin work on the follow-up to 2011's self-titled album. "Lots of reasons," she said (see video below). "I like to have an open mind about what I can be and what I can do in life.
"I love the music I've made with this band, and there are times that I have been more excited about it and passionate about it and in love with and wanting to pour into it than others. Sometimes you have to get away from it. It's such a full saturation.
"The way that our cycles have always gone, really — it started to change now; we found a way to really break it up — that is all you can do for that however many years period of your life with each cycle. Between writing the music and everything that goes along with that, to then going on tour and all the amazing stuff that goes along with that, and releasing the album, and promoting the album, and then at the end of it, I'm always, like, 'I quit' — almost every time. I'm, like, 'I don't know if I'm ever gonna do this again. That was amazing. I love it so much.' I don't feel like I'm gonna have that kind of a struggle anymore. A lot has changed on the inside. Our representation on every level has grown and changed, and we are fully supported by an awesome team that believes in us and supports us. And it doesn't feel so much like going to war to create an album anymore either, like it used to.
"But besides all of that stuff, the space between the third album and this one, a lot of it was I wanted to go down some different creative roads," she continued. "I had my first and only child, Jack. And I did some film-score stuff.
"I kind of thought that becoming a mom would make me not wanna work — like I'd just wanna focus only on being a mom, but it actually just gave me so much — I don't know — perspective. Like, you get a different perspective, and suddenly, as a creative person, you just think of different things that you wanna do, because your mind's working in a different way. I made a kids album with my family, worked on a couple of different movie things and some little solo things. And I just found other ways to be creative. And then by the time the band got back together, we got Jen [Majura, guitar], who's a beautiful, amazing addition to our band… We got Jen in 2015, and we started just touring again and really enjoying playing again. That was the first step back — just play shows and get into it and remember who you are and everything that this is and can be, with our fan community and just the whole world of what it is. And then we did the 'Synthesis' [2017] thing together, with a full orchestra and a lot of the electronic stuff, and just took our music into a different place with a different focus, which was challenging and fun and different. And then it was, like, 'Okay, we're ready.' So we just started doing writing sessions. So it's just been a long but natural road, just following what feels good.
"I can't tell you how much fire we all have, but I — I can speak for myself — really had about making this music right now with my band," Amy added. "It's coming at a time when I need it very much, and a lot of the feelings that I pour into the music for the band are about a struggle — about going through something that's difficult, and I'm processing it, or raging against. And this is a time where I feel those feelings, and I know a lot of people in the world do too. So I feel like I'm right where I'm supposed to be."
Last month, EVANESCENCE released a new single, "Use My Voice", which was written to celebrate the power of speaking out in order to promote more justice in the world. The track, featuring contributions from THE PRETTY RECKLESS's Taylor Momsen and HALESTORM's Lzzy Hale, was chosen by HeadCount in the USA to encourage voters to register, check their registration, or find out about their remote voting options amid the COVID-19 pandemic at UseMyVoice.org.
EVANESCENCE's long-awaited new album, "The Bitter Truth", will arrive later this year.
The band's new music is being produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who also worked on 2011's self-titled LP.

Korn Biografi
Tumblr media
Empat Tahun Setelah Kemunculan Band
Hanya empat tahun setelah muncul, mereka memiliki rilis nomor satu: blockbuster Follow the Leader, rumah bagi "Freak on a Leash" dan "Got the Life." Menutup dekade di atas tangga lagu dengan Masalah, Korn tetap menjadi salah satu aksi rock AS terbesar ke tahun 2000-a, mengeluarkan serangkaian collection bersertifikat platinum: Untouchables (2002), Take a Look in the Mirror (2003), dan See You on Sisi Lain (2005).
Collection ini menampilkan "A.D.I.D.A.S." dan sampul Ice Wicked "Fiendish" dengan vokalis Deftones Chino Moreno.
Memenangkan Penghargaan
Collection debut di atas Billboard 200, menelurkan single hit "Got the Life" dan "Monstrosity on a Leash."
Menampilkan single "Falling Away from Me," "Make Me Bad," dan "Someone," Isu melanjutkan dominasi Korn di MTV, radio stone, dan tangga lagu Billboard, debut di nomor satu. Sebelum merilis collection berikutnya, Fieldy merilis collection rap gangsta dan Davis mencetak film Queen of the Damned.
Tak lama setelah itu, band ini merilis Take a Look in the Mirror yang diproduksi sendiri pada tahun 2003.
Korn Rekaman Akustik Live
Bulan Desember berikutnya mereka merilis See You on the Other Side, hit nomor tiga yang menampilkan sejumlah lagu siap pakai yang ditulis bersama dengan tim produksi pop hitmaking, Matrix (Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears).
Collection kesembilan mereka, Korn III: Remember Who You Are, keduanya kembali ke bentuk dan vulkanisir aman, menandakan revitalisasi band.
Peacefulness of Suffering dirilis pada akhir 2016.

Well, I’m usually not serious.  You know that...I’m a nerdy gamer who geeks out about everything I obsess over.  But today, I really have to send out a proper tribute.  Today, a piece of my childhood is going to be fading into history and I should thank it for its years of services.
While I don’t give my location because of safety concerns, I am willing to say I’ve lived in the Tri-State Area all my life.  And thus...NYC Radio Stations!  I’ve seen my fair share of stations come and go in my life.  However, it was normally due to unpopularity of the genre (Country Music is one of my go-to genres and it wasn’t really popular when I was growing up so any station we got was gone very quickly).  But tonight, at 7, we will be saying goodbye to PLJ, a station I grew up with!  The company that owned it ran into financial trouble and sold off some of their assets.  And while the Country station they owned was sold to another multi-genre radio company and has been kept as-is (considering they own other Pop stations in the area, it would make more sense for them to NOT oversaturate their own market), PLJ was sold off to a religious radio company.  So...keeping it as its normal Rock/Pop/Contemporary was never in the cards.
Growing up, my father listened to a station that I can barely remember as it went off the air when I was pretty young, and my mother listened to a Country station that became a Spanish station, then another Country station that became a Rap/Hip-Hop/Pop station.  But when Dad needed another go-to after his first station went away and Mom was going between periods in which we actually had Country stations...we defaulted to PLJ!  It had just the right mix of eras and didn’t stray far into some of the less savory genres, so it was a station that everyone in the family enjoyed.
It’s from Saturday Night 80s and the 80s at 8 Weekday shows that I learned to love the music of that decade, despite the parts of it I did live through being too young for me to remember.  There were many happy times of me listening to the radio in my room (which I still have...although it’s broken and collecting dust) and singing along with Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Pat Benetar, and basically any Rock or Pop artist from that era that you can think of!  Of buying recording tapes and recording the songs to play on my Walkman.  I discovered Evanescance through them in the early 2000s, and through that and Pandora I learned of my real love of Goth and Symphonic Metal.  And they were normally what I defaulted to in the car going home if I had my choice of stations that weren’t on commercials.
In recent years, I’ve listened to more Country, but that’s because I was just happy to have a station again and wanted to keep it.  That and commercial breaks weren’t agreeing with my drive (I’d be more likely to get Lite FM or Fresh FM to be playing actual music when others had commercials).  And my MP3 Player for those longer trips/mornings when music isn’t on.  However, I’ve always gone back there when the stars aligned and I wasn’t being hounded with commercials.  And being able to hear one of my old favorites that were still being given occasional air time since they were well loved by the demographic.  So it is quite sad to see them go all the same.
Yes, there are other options.  Both the Oldies and Classic Rock stations are more about the 80s and 90s nowadays than the 60s and 70s they were playing when I was a teenager.  And both Lite FM and Fresh FM DO have a similar play field to PLJ.  However...this is still a piece of my childhood with so many memories attached that will be going away forever.  After 48 years of being on the radio...I didn’t realize the station was THAT much older than me!
So, in this last minute...thank you, PLJ!  Thank you for making my childhood.  Thank you for introducing me to some wonderful genres of music and eras I didn’t really get to experience.  And thank you for helping to pave the way to some truly wonderful bands I’d never have learned about otherwise, even if indirectly.  You will always be my childhood...even after you’ve gone...

Call It Heavy Metal Noise
Tumblr media
I just listened to the new EVANESCENCE last week. The album is called “The Bitter Truth.” It’s not bad. It’s more than I expected from them and/or her. She is a great singer, but I am not sure if her vocals work for “really, heavy” music over the alternative pop metal she has been doing. I really had not listened to the band since they broke out in 2004.
“Part of Me” is a great song and in tone the album is a little bit heavier than the band’s previous works. Like, if you take what she was doing back in the day and compare it to now, it is much more heavier a record. So, I would say less pop and more rock, but it’s still very tamed down by today’s “Heavy” Metal Standards. It’s not Jinjer. No one is Jinjer…
However, this got me to thinking about music, metal and classifications. We call these Genres and Subgenres. If you all have not seen “A Headbanger’s Journey.” I recommend you all see it. It’s great. A little dated by today’s standards as metal had grown so much and changed in the past 10-15 years that it is hard to have conversations about what has/is happening to metal since the turn of the century…
It’s a tough thing to label what is really Heavy Metal and what is Pop/Rock. I am stickler for labeling bands in the correct subgenre of Heavy Metal. It’s all “Heavy Metal” and Pop/Rock is a subgenre of the main genre of Heavy Metal. This perspective is if you are the Metalhead and are creating an outline and/or timeline of bands in Heavy Metal and what Subgenre of Heavy Metal you believe they belong in.
This is completely objective. It’s all opinion based, but there are some rules for saying a band is this style or another style. Criteria is really the only way someone can say this is that and that is this, within Heavy Metal labeling.
Take Nu Metal as an example. What is Nu Metal? The easy answer is Nü Metal is Rap Metal… Well, that is a very incomplete definition, but to someone that doesn’t know metal all that well or at all that would be an “alright” answer; I’ll except it... A better definition of Nu Metal is, taken from Wiki: (sometimes stylized as nü-metal) is a subgenre of alternative metal that combines elements of heavy metal music with elements of other music genres such as hip hop, alternative rock, funk, industrial, and grunge.
This definition actually works for me, accept it is missing one very important part of the conversation about criteria. That is time period. Nü Metal isn’t just all those things in the Wiki take, it is also talking about a specific time period from 1993-2003. Now this doesn’t mean that some bands weren’t doing Nü Metal’ish / Fusion Rock based material before 1993. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More had all sorts of stuff in their music that could include them in the Nü Metal subgenre, also what about Stuck Mojo? Hip/Hop and Hardcore, yeah, they were doing it too.
However, for the most part, most would say 1993 is a fair estimate for a start date as to when you started seeing bands that would be later labeled as Nü Metal started to show up. However, by 2003 the style was in decline and you had a lot of bands from the subgenre either flat out change their sound or packed it in as a band and went onto do other things. Like father all those babies they made on the road, backstage and on the bus…
Now, Nü Metal was still doing things after 2003, but was actually anyone listening to these bands anymore? All the bands that had one or two LPs come out, had a few singles on the radio and were/are still actively touring bands… Yeah, those bands… Did anyone even notice them still around or gone for that matter? I think not.
Flaw, 12 Stones, hell, even Finger Eleven? Anyone screaming for new records from these bands? If so, then Nü Metal is still around, its not, and hasn’t been for a long while now. Post-Nü Metal for me started around 2005…
This is sort of important as some of the bands we listen to today were not even out yet and there has been a resurgence in the style. However, I cannot call it Nü Metal as Nü Metal also has the time period as part of the criteria. I am calling this Nü Wave Metal, but it’s all objective. Call it whatever you want to, but if you get into a conversation about this topic with someone that is very passionate about Heavy Metal Culture, they might embarrass you and take your girl or guy. Now, that’s metal hahhahahah….
Some examples of subgenres:
Metallica… From Genre.Fandom.com; Metallica is considered: Thrash Metal, Progressive Metal, Hard Rock, Alternative Metal. They can be put into other categories, but for the sake of not giving anyone a headache we will just stick with this. It should be noted that a lot of Metallica’s labeling changes from album to album. It is widely argued that Metallica’s 1st 4 LPs were straight up Thrash while everything after “…And Justice For All” is not Thrash Metal. I tend to agree… To me, though, Metallica is still a Heavy Metal band.
Another Example is Lamb of God. Taken from Google; Lamb of God is considered: New Wave of American Heavy Metal, Groove Metal, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Metalcore, Black Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Grindcore, Alternative Metal, Speed Metal…
For me, Google can be hit or miss. They got 2 right out of gates. I agree that Lamb of God is “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” and “Groove Metal.” Personally, the others are a stretch. I guess they fit there, but if I have to look up bands of a specific subgenre and I am left scratching my head then I do not include said band in the labeling.
Like I said, this is completely up to you, but use some logic and critical thinking when you do it. These are my rules… What are yours??? Sometimes it is easy. Limp Bizkit is easy to call Nü Metal like Anthrax is to Thrash Metal.
One of my favorite bands as of late is Winds Of Plague, formed in 2002. They use a lot of different elements, but came out in 2002. Do we call them Nü Metal? I am sure people did, especially back in those days. In those days the band sounded more like a Hardcore band over a Nü Metal band, but that was what was happening then.
If you were heavy, metal, and came out during that latter Nü Metal years, you were called Nü Metal. I absolutely do not agree with that, but I understand the logistics of it. I was dying a little bit inside when I was reading music people calling “Shinedown” a Nü Metal band? Wait, what???
Winds Of Plague is considered Metalcore, Hardcore, Deathcore, Death Metal, Symphonic Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Avant-garde Metal, Symphonic Black Metal.
Some other bands I love… All labeling from Google… I agree with some, but not all. I do not know how they handle this, but I am not really feeling some of these secondary, third and fourth choices.
As I Lay Dying - Metalcore, Thrash Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Christian Metal, Melodic Metalcore, Christian Hardcore, Swedecore…
Dream Theater - Rock, Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, Hard Rock …
Machine Head - New Wave of American Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Nü Metal, Groove Metal, Metalcore, Progressive Metal, Alternative Metal, Speed Metal …
Pantera - Rock, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Hard Rock, Glam Metal, Groove Metal, Traditional Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Sludge Metal, Southern Rock, New Wave of American Heavy Metal…
Scar Symmerty - Melodic Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal…
Sevendust - Hard Rock, Nü Metal, Alternative Rock, Alternative Metal, Post-Grunge, Industrial Metal…
Twelve Foot Ninja - Experimental Metal, Djent, Alternative Metal, Jazz Fusion, Acoustic Music, Experimental Rock, Avant-garde Metal, Funk Metal, Dub…
I get most people do not want to label their music like that. However, Heavy Metal is a family of music genres that is in a class all by itself. The numbers differ, but you can have as many as 75 different Subgenres of Heavy Metal.
While writing this I could only find 54. Again this is all objective. People make them up every few years. There is a subgenre called Nintendocore and all it is people creating music which sounds like the music on the old NES gaming console. Why this is a thing I couldn’t tell you. Some people want to feel important I guess. We live in a very confused INTERNET fueled culture these days.
This isn’t a blog about human behavior in relation to Heavy Metal and 8-bit soundtracks. Now, if someone told me August Burns Red’s cover of the Legend of Zelda theme was Nintendocore and I didn’t already know what Nintendocore was then I could agree that this song is Nintendocore. It isn’t, but again how are you or I associate Heavy Metal music to other Heavy Metal music is opinion based. Most agree that a subgenre has its own rules, but bands flip flop and/or are interchangeable more than the Politicians of this country do.
It’s all just objective perspective… Some will say Pop/Rock is whatever Rock song/album/band is popular. I only agree with that a little bit.
I say POP/ROCK has 3 main criteria that work together, but are also mutually exclusive;
1) As a form of music that one cannot put a label on, specifically.
2) Has different elements from other musical genres.
3) Happens to be a popular song/songs.
So POP/ROCK is more like a label given to bands/artists that do not fit in a “specific” subgenre. I actually call this “Fusion.” Now, more or less this is talking about how Metalheads may think of it. This by no means is a judgement and/or based on any fact. There are no facts in music. It’s all objective. I do not deny. I am a snob when it comes to this, I am…
I was into Trance back in the day, Paul Oakenfold. I like Dubstep style music too. Dubstep is literally Heavy Metal with electronical instrumentation. There are a lot of similarities. Plus, you are seeing a lot of dubstep style sampling used in more extreme metal these days. The subgenre of Metalcore has a lot of these elements; Asking Alexandria, Attila, Skip The Foreplay, I See Stars, Capture the Crown, Make Me Famous. It was big in the latter 2000s and early 2010s… I still see this trying to push through to the front of Heavy Metal, but bands like Asking Alexandria and Attila no longer sound like what they were when they first started getting big. Asking Alexandria is basically a Pop band now and Attila would rather do Porn videos and be a marketing machine on Twitter than writing great Metalcore music. Things have changed… Not just with those bands, but bands in general.
The whole industry has shifted since the Pandemic started, but there was a lot of evidence that the typical Garage Band Journey of starting from nothing and becoming a house hold name was in decline.
When I took over logistics for the band I manage now after the first 3 or 4 months I was open to a lot. Once we started pulling local band grind of driving across the state for no money, no fans, which means no merch sales, means no money.
Now, locally we are good with that. We’ll play shows like that, here, but not 2 to 3 hours away in 3 beat up vehicles, cramming 10 people into a shitty hotel room, gas, booze, food, child care, scheduling conflicts. Before we know it we are pulling monies out of the band fund just to play a show.
We do not pay to play, especially in front of no people accept the other bands and their girlfriends. Jammin’ in 7-8 bands in a small ass bar with little to NO PAY, but the bar made their money that night. That isn’t a show that is band practice… There is one exception and that is when opening for a national.
Bands are on YouTube now, doing streams, covers, different takes of songs. Content is being streamed now more than ever and if bands are not willing to change with that dynamic then they are behind the times.
Being a garage band and playing shitty bars for no money and expecting record executives to be there to sign the band, well, that doesn’t exist anymore. It hasn’t in a long time actually.
The music is changing too… It’s all about tuning down, low tones and 8-string guitars, sometimes 2 of them.  Now, older school guitar players will fight this and call it cookie cutter and/or basic, but the metal community has accepted this is the direction styles are moving metal forward.
Vocally you have people like; Tatiana Shmayluk of JINJER. Probably the hottest vocalist on the market next to Alex Terrible of Slaughter to Prevail. Tatiana is the best of both worlds with a soft voice and a scream that will make any metalhead smile wider than the Joker…
She can scream like a man, clean, but yet also pull off Gwen Stefani harmonics without all the synth bull crap. She does this with little to no effects and absolutely no Autotune. A lot of metal singers cannot go from scream to melody on a dime, but she can and it’s amazing. Also this is a great example of what 8-string tuned down guitars sound like with someone that can actually sing along with screaming. That is why Jinjer is doing so well right now. Rumor has it they are playing Janus Live in December in Saint Petersburg, Florida…
What Alex Terrible is doing/using is called “false vocal gutturals” and many of metal singers have damaged their vocal cords, seriously and permanently, trying to sing like this incorrectly. It took him 12 years of being coached and practicing for him to be able to do this the way he does and not damage his vocal cords. What is amazing about this is he does this with no added digital effects. Maybe some eq’n and your standard clean up filters, but nothing is added here to make him sound like this. It’s all him. He also sells these crazy demon masks that are always sold out and he will do hip/hop covers using only his false vocal cord gutturals. (Very entertaining)…
Closing…
All I am doing with this BLOG, and a really long one, is to show the difference between some of the labeling styles between popular Heavy Metal Subgenres. Just imagine if Lady Gaga did a real Heavy Metal record? Using her dance/pop style with an 8-string tuned down guitars, inverse bass drops, keyboards, LP turntable scratches, false vocal cord singing over just making a rock version of a pop artist.
That would be a very interesting sound I would love to hear. Now if Lady Gaga just did her normal sound with just some “rock” guitars that is exactly what someone would do if they said they wanted to go Metal, but truly do not know what metal is. Like the IG model that wears an Iron Maiden shirt but cannot name one single song of the band.
That isn’t new or pushing the elements. I get it, but whenever I hear a pop/rap artist take a stab at Heavy Metal they tend to show they do not know what Heavy Metal is. The only artist I have heard consistently over the years that can do it is Ice Tea’s “Body Count.” All black rap people making real, Heavy Metal records. And they are good… That’s what I am talking about… That’s love… That’s coming together…
I can just see some hotshot Producer saying “let’s do a metal song,” but it’s not metal, it’s barely rock, but Producer dude doesn’t know what real metal is nowadays. Metallica BLACK wouldn’t be called Thrash Metal nowadays, even Disturbed to me really isn’t “Heavy” Metal. So if you are not sure how heavy you have to be to be called “Heavy” Metal… Well, tune it down…
The Heavy Metal community is a huge group of people that come from all sort of backgrounds, places, colors, sexes, creeds, tastes, but we all tend to LOVE HEAVY METAL and that brings us all together. Man. I can really go and find wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more examples of Metalheads being people with huge caring hearts than the latter.

Just headcanoning Ryou’s music.
I’ve spent like 3 days solid thinking about this. And I think I finally nailed down what his music library (and collection of old CDs, because let’s face it, Ryou definitely regularly raids thrift stores and record exchanges for New Old Stuff to add to his collection of oddities).
So, my overall impression of Ryou is that he’s quiet, but not in that he’s quiet internally-- he’s quiet because there’s SO MUCH going on internally.
As such, I don’t think he only listens to cute, soft stuff like Coldplay and Plain White Tees. In fact, he seems very momentary-experience based, and his “favorite things” list canonically goes from “Cream Puffs” (definitely a sweet decadent dessert food) to “Plot-Twist in Card Form” to “creepy things like ghosts and the history of ancient cursed items that can destroy the world as we know it”. These are all pretty defined, potent experiences.
So, I think his music tastes definitely follow suit. He probably just likes music in general, for the experience of listening to it. (This is the guy who found out his favorite ancient artifact was basically killing people, and still held onto it. I don’t think he’d shy away from metal, or opera, or R&B, or supposedly-cursed albums... Hell, he’d probably SEEK OUT that last one.)
His “favorite” music to listen to, intentionally, is probably any music that inspires tabletop campaigns.
Say, Elvenpath, by Nightwish:
youtube
He definitely ran a campaign inspired by “Seven Devils”, by Florence and the Machine:
youtube
He uses Sabaton to imagine epic battle scenes, think about historical events, and get in the mind of soldiers for period piece campaigns:
youtube
And, of course, stuff like Nox Arcana with its creepy bend.
He definitely appreciates an epic or poetic storytelling in a song: ”Wherever I May Roam”, by Metallica. Or “Valley of the Damned”, by Dragonforce.
Or just a pretty song he relates to. Like ”The World’s Forgotten, The Words Forbidden” by Sonata Arctica. I imagine he relates to this one on some deep, intrinsic level. I can’t help feeling he feels some kind of hiraeth, given the whole canonical reincarnation thing; it’s a very real world phenomenon, that people who’ve reincarnated are deeply comforted by things from their past lives, and I think he finds a lot of comfort in studying history for this reason?
youtube
Okay, so on another note, look Ryou’s cute doe-eyed creepy-things-loving self in the face, and tell me he doesn’t like Tim Burton movies. He probably loves Sweenie Todd. So, Danny Elfman compositions have their place, too.
He almost certainly doesn’t mind classical music as background stuff, and enjoys the expressive drama. His favorite is probably The Fifth Element, or something really obscure that barely exists anymore.
He probably listens to a lot of different tribal music, because it has a lot of history, and he fully supports the effort to keep those traditional musics alive. He’ll listen to everything from John Twohawks to Tibetan Throat Singing to museum-archive recordings of ritual recreations.
And I bet he listens to Gregorian’s covers of popular radio songs more than the original versions.
Same for Broadway musicals; though he doesn’t go to see them very often, he enjoys the music. (I’m thinking anything from Rent to Phantom of the Opera to Beauty and the Beast on Braodway. He probably loves dark fairy tales in general, which musicals somehow mesh really well with.)
I can see him liking EDM, especially if it’s a remix of a song he likes already.
But not dubstep, for some reason? Not intentionally, anyways. I dunno, man. I can’t see him listening to Skrillex or Deadmou5; he seems to be pretty, ah, “classically inclined” when it comes to spare time. Classical hobbies, like cooking and crafting and history. He never seemed super techy. (Though I can still see him appreciating the effort a dubstep producer puts into their songs.)
And sometimes he just likes a song because it’s catchy and fun and it makes him want to dance* a little, like Shut Up and Dance With Me. So he’ll still listen to the occasional jumpstep, or glitch-step, if it’s not too heavy on the sudden screeches and blips that may or may not trigger something unpleasant.
Ryou’s also in touch with his more sensitive side. So, not to stereotype here. But I feel like he’d also listen to the occasional “““emo”““ band. Like Evanescence, unironically. He thinks about Amane (his deceased sister) every time he hears “Hello” or “The Other Side”.
He probably has a few rock songs he likes, along the vein of Gacht and Red and Three Days Grace.
(I also feel like he’d be introduced to a few rap songs by his friends, and initially not be too sure about them, but wind up appreciating them once he figures out the lyrics aren’t just stereotypical rap stuff?)
And I also headcanon that he dissociates pretty hard sometimes. So sometimes atmospheric music makes being out of touch for awhile a little more bearable. So he’ll listen to very pretty, very mellow atmospheric things, like Aesma Daeva or Midnight Syndicate. This is probably when the movie soundtracks and classical music tend to come out. (He has playlists pre-picked out for these moments, because when he’s dissociating he struggles to make decisions, even little ones like what song to play, especially for 12 of them in a row. And he only has to use one spoon to open it and click “Play”.)

I miss the early 2000s...
I mean, not every aspect of the early 2000s. We could do without the political nonsense and geopolitical drama, and everyone knows a particular day we could all go without. Never forget September 11th, 2001, the day of the awful terrorist attacks carried about by 4 Canadians against the Billboard charts...
I’m talking about culture and entertainment. I’m definitely in the throes of my quarter-life crisis!
Remember all those classic games released between 2000 and 2004?
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Max Payne 1 and 2, Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City/San Andreas, Perfect Dark, Halo and Halo 2, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X, Sonic Adventure 2, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, Deus Ex, The Sims, Jet Set Radio Future, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2/3/4 and Tony Hawk Underground 1 and 2, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1/2/3 and the Legacy of Goku/Buu’s Fury series, Beyond Good and Evil, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Luigi’s Mansion, the original Call of Duty, Medal of Honor: Frontline, Command and Conquer: Generals, Freedom Fighters, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, World of Warcraft, Splinter Cell, Counter Strike, Ratchet and Clank, just holy shit.
Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Disney hit the ground running. It was the heyday of Toonami, for one.
This was the period where we had several major film franchises going on at the same time as well: Harry Potter was the big motherfucker, but there was also Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek, and the Matrix.
The music, too, was awesome. At the time, we thought it was awful. In retrospect, we all want it back. Because, if you bar the majority of nü metal, just about everything on the radio was a winner. We heard Eminem, Gorillaz, Rage Against The Machine (’s last hurrah), Radiohead, Santana, Avenged Sevenfold, The White Stripes, Jimmy Eat World, DMX, Outkast, Missy Elliot, Audioslave, Coldplay, the tail end of Smash Mouth, Tool, System of a Down, Sum 41, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Electric Wizard, A Perfect Circle, Deltron, Basement Jaxx, Meshuggah, oh lord!
Like I said, avoid most of nü metal and you’ll be fine!
Ah, to be a kid in elementary school again...
