For writers, you have an incriminating search history. For artists, you have the same thing, but also incriminating layer names. "Body, skeleton, muscle, arm, table, sword, lining, body 2, shine, nails, hair, sfx, eyes..." It is like a fucking mortuary up in here.

Tumblr media
Hello!! A couple years ago I posted this tutorial for making gifs with a moving overlay effect. In the two and a half years since I made that tutorial, I've learned some new tricks for this gif effect but most importantly I've learned how to explain things better.
For that reason, I've created this new and improved tutorial for my overlay gif effect. The basics are the same but it's simpler, I go into more detail, give better explanations, and have more comprehensive instructions.
The easiest way to do this effect with this method is to use smart objects and work in timeline. For this tutorial, I’m assuming you know the basics of giffing like cropping, resizing, colouring, etc. If you need help with this I’d suggest you look at some other tutorials and guides!!
First, we’re going to start off with three things.
1. A completed gif converted into a smart object that is going to be the base gif. I'm going to call this "gif1". You’ll want this gif to be at least 3 seconds because it needs to last as long as the overlay plus a little bit of extra time in the beginning. This is the base gif I’ll be using in the example (except I trimmed it so that I could meet the size limit).
Tumblr media
2. A second completed gif converted into a smart object that is going to go over the base gif. We’re going to call this "gif2". This gif should be at least 2 seconds but I’ve made it work with shorter. Gif2 needs to be the same dimensions or bigger than gif1.  This is the gif I'll be using in the example (except I trimmed it so that I could meet the size limit).
Tumblr media
3. An overlay in video form. These can be found on tumblr and youtube by search for overlay or transition packs. For this example, I'll be using an ink drop overlay I found on youtube.
Step 1: Turning the overlay video into an overlay gif Most overlays aren’t going to instantly fit the gif effect you’re trying to achieve right away. This is the overlay I got from youtube and as you can see it’s too slow and needs a crop/resize to be usable.
Tumblr media
To fix it, I sped the frame rate up, cropped the overlay, and resized the overlay so it fits over my base gif. I also sharpened the overlay (500% amount, 0.3px radius) so that the edges were smooth. This is the new overlay gif and the one I’ll be using for the gif effect.
Tumblr media
A tip: I also like to add a brightness/contrast layer to get rid of the grey on the overlay gif. Because we’re working with blending modes to achieve this effect, any parts of the overlay that are grey will be a blended mix of gif1 and gif2. If you think this will look good for your gif effect then don't worry about it!
Another tip: try to get the entire overlay movement to fit into a 2-3 second window. Anything longer than that will likely be cut off when you have to trim your gif to meet the upload size limit and it would suck to only have half of the overlay.
Step 2: Creating the gif effect Drag a copy of gif2 and a copy of the overlay gif onto the gif1 canvas. I like to use Ctrl+Shift+V so that the layers are pasted in the same position as they were on the previous canvas. MAKE SURE that both overlay layers are in the same position on the canvas. If one of the overlay layers is higher/lower/etc. than the other then the effect won't work properly.
Then, make a second copy of the overlay and invert it (Ctrl+i). These are the layers you should have:
Tumblr media
Before you go any further, trim gif2 and both overlay layers so they are all the same length.
Now, we need to rearrange the layers and set blending modes. The top layer should be whichever overlay goes from black to white. This is because when we change the blending modes, the white part of this layer will disappear and look like its being replaced by gif2. In this case, that is the overlay (inverted) layer. Then we want gif2, the other overlay layer, and then gif1.
Tumblr media
A tip: this process can be done the other way where the top layer is the overlay that goes from white > black however, you are much more likely to have an error where there is a grey/black line around the overlay effect in your final gif. In order to avoid that, I always use the black > white layer on top.
Next, set the top overlay layer to darken. You should only see the black part from the overlay and gif2 should fill in the white part. Here’s how that looks in my example.
Tumblr media
Next, select the top overlay layer and gif2 and convert both layers into one smart object. Your layers tab should look like this now.
Tumblr media
Now, set the new layer’s blending mode to lighten and the overlay layer’s blending mode to darken. Once you do this, you should be able to see gif1 as well as the overlay gif.
Tumblr media
Step 3: Timeline and exporting At the moment, gif1 is still significantly longer than the overlay gifs. Since this gif is just over 10 mb (which is pretty small for this effect) I’m going to trim about 1/4 of a second off the end of gif1 and then drag the overlay layers so they all end at the same time.
Tumblr media
Now you’re free to export the gif! This is the finished effect for the example gif!
Tumblr media
A tip: sometimes, when I convert to from timeline to frames, the gif becomes a little longer and slower. It has to do with different frame rates across the videos and photoshop but I'm not smart enough to understand it. If that happens, just set all the frames with the overlay layers to 0.04 speed instead of 0.05.
And we're finished! I hope that was helpful and made sense. If you have any questions feel free to drop them in my inbox or send me a message!! <3

Kibbe Body Types, Part 1: Gillian Anderson
Tumblr media
Building off of the Kibbe Body Types primer post here, we jump straight into Gillian Anderson of The X-Files fame.
David's up next, don't you worry! I'm tackling GA first because I have ample information to fact and figure my way through the system (and because it's slim pickings finding fashion advice for men's body types); and thought I'd get the convoluted, detailed analysis out of the way on this post so we don't retrace our steps in the next.
Onwards~
**Note**: If you want to skip right down to Gillian, search for Gillian Anderson: the Results header.
KIBBE BODY TYPES: A SHORT SUMMARY
(You can skip this section if you just want to know Gillian's frame, proportions, and Kibbe Type-- no sweat off my back.)
David Kibbe constructed a system that measures the soft and structure, short and tall, wide and narrow, yin and yang of the body frame: its skeleton, its curves, its musculature, and its fleshiness. It's strictly a practical science that explains how best to dress to balance out one's natural features, regardless of weight gain, weight loss, or aging. This system is not about correcting the "flaws" of a person's body, but understanding why a garment, accessory, etc. does or does not naturally suit the lines of the body.
Kibbe used to have 13 types (that included pure Natural, pure Classic, and pure Gamine) but recently winnowed them down to ten.
(**Note**: I have written about them in more detail-- with pictures included-- in my previous post mentioned above. Highly recommend.)

Dramatics have the most yang of the body types: tall, lean, and narrow vertical lines, with the least amount of softness to their flesh ("fleshiness."). They have long bones and sharp curves that are best accommodated by long, clean lines and long silhouettes (no color blocking.) Their hair looks best in clean, carefully styled lines-- geometrics, blunt cuts, etc.-- without too much of a wispy or tousled appearance. They do best without waist emphasis or shorter lines in their outfits, appearing to advantage in long, boxy silhouettes.
Soft Dramatics have the Dramatic Type structure with added softness to their curves, giving them a full-bodied, "heavy" voluptuousness (as opposed to a delicate weightlessness.) They look better in soft but weighty fabrics, with big, rounded silhouettes and lines that curve around their figure and emphasize their waist. Again, like Dramatics, they need carefully styled hairs, looking undone tousled hair or too much wispiness.
Flamboyant Naturals are midsize to very tall, with width and bluntness to their elongated frames. Their very pronounced wide shoulders and narrow waist and hips create an unmistakable T-shape (and have been the sought-after body type for runway supermodels since the 90s.) They look their best in big, oversized, relaxed fits; big, tousled, crazy hair; long, vertical lines without color blocking. Nothing too stiff or too delicate and weightless.
Soft Naturals are normally midsize to slightly smaller, with wide, blunt edges to their elongated bones. Their more proportionate frames and softer flesh on their arms and legs help them appear more "womanly" than FNs. Slightly tousled, slightly crazy hair; a slight waist emphasis; and long, unconstructed lines layered with different fits, patterns, and colors look best on them-- "feminine undone", in other words. Anything too stiff make them appear "heavier" than they are.
Dramatic Classics are midsize to tall, with a very balanced, symmetrical frame proportionate to their length and width. They have a touch more yang to their skeleton: a bit more sharpness in their bones, a bit squarish in the face and shoulders. Clean, symmetrical, sharply tailored outfits look best on them; and they are able to mix the angularity of men's and femininity of women's styles if they keep their lines in the right places. Hair is incredibly important to maintain-- keeping their dead ends cut regularly is a must.
Soft Classics are midsize to petite, with a very balanced, symmetrical frame proportionate to their length and width. They have a touch more yin to their skeleton: a bit more softness to their flesh, a bit more roundness to their proportionate edges. Symmetrical, clean, "every hair in place" look is best for them; with a touch of yin to balance the touch of softness in their flesh. Well-tailored, lightweight fabrics and polished hairstyles look best on them-- not too stiff, not too delicate; not too tousled, not too structured, not too layered. Hair is incredibly important to maintain-- it makes or breaks their look.
Flamboyant Gamines are midsize to tallish, an uneven mixture of opposites with a predominant yang majority. They have a smallish, rectangular figure-- small Dramatics (without the long vertical line.) "Tailored, color blocks, irregular shapes, mishmash-- they can mix whatever they want." Hair can be in any shape or style they want, unless it is long; in which case, it must be "crazy." Their waist does not need to be emphasized; and cropped lines will always look good.
Soft Gamines are petite, an uneven mixture of opposites with a predominant yin majority. They are small and rounded, often feeling awkward, puffy, or overweight (when they are not) in super feminine lines: their bone structure is slightly too angular-- though still fleshy-- to be comfortable in completely yin fits. Lines should be crips, color blocked, with waist emphasis: "puffy things with very precise ends." It's best when clothes are fitted at the neck or shoulders or elbows or wrist or waist or hips or knees or ankles; and in between those points, the material can be relaxed, with gathers or looser knitting. "Feminine or weightless things should have added weight: color blocking, bright colors, etc. Hairstyles that are feminine and tousled look best. Cropped lines will always work best.
Romantics have the most yin of the body types: midsize to petite, with a very curvy, "lush", feminine "fleshy" roundness. Their bones are short and slightly wide; but still appear delicate. "They look best with waist emphasis, weightless fabrics, and gentle silhouettes. Gentle colors, slightly transparent fabrics or lace, flowers, gentle ruffles-- everything that is weightless and not super stiff. Same with hair: something that will still have body and some femininity-- curly hair, wavy hair... if straight, it can be slightly longer. Delicate things should present in their look."
Theatrical Romantics are midsize to petite; and are "the same as Romantic but with thinner bones. They are still short, but thinner. They are not as wide-- imagine a narrow hourglass-- small hands, thin fingers. They look best in small, ornate, and sophisticated clothes."
BEGINNING OUR PROCESS OF ELIMINATION
Tumblr media
I'm going to be using Aly Art's body type quiz (here); and pictures from her and Merriam Style's quiz (here.)
David Kibbe is adamant that height be factored into the body types-- women's bodies, particularly-- so we shall begin our journey there.
Tumblr media
Dramatics: 5’9"/173cm and up
Soft Dramatics: 5’7”/170cm and up
Theatrical Naturals: 5’11”/180cm and up
Soft Naturals: 5’5”/165cm and up
Dramatic Classics: 5’5”-5’8”/166-172cm or thereabouts
Soft Classics: 5’5"-5'6”/164-169cm
Romantics: 5’5"/166cm or thereabouts
Theatrical Romantics: 5’2”/157cm or thereabouts
Flamboyant Gamines: 5’6”/168cm and under
Soft Gamines: 5’2”/157cm or thereabouts
As we can see, Gillian at 5'2" can only fit into Gamines, Romantics, or perhaps Classics. We shall see how this shakes out.
TAKING A (SHORTENED) KIBBE BODY TYPE QUIZ
The purpose of David Kibbe's body type quiz is (or was) to identify the visual weight-- the presence or gravitas-- of the bone structure. To loosely quote Merriam Style: "The first thing we want to think about when we think about bone structure: are the bones longer-- offering a lot of structure to bear up visual "weight"-- or are they smaller and shorter-- offering less support for heavier visual weights?"
An overall view is crucial: two body types can share nearly identical faces; or one person can have a lot of yang in their facial features but have dominant yin in the rest of their body; or any other disastrous event can happen that will topple the whole franchise.
We're eliminating B options from this list (as they pertain strictly to Natural Body Types), as well as two questions in Kibbe's original quiz (which he has either loosened or tightened restrictions on, respectively.)

Gilian Anderson: the Results
Tumblr media
Gillian has an overall short, delicate, softly narrow body (D): moderate shoulders (C); small, slightly shortish arms and legs (D); small, narrow, delicate hands and feet (D); a bust and torso in even proportion to her waist and hips (C); a proportionate hipline and waistline (C); delicate, tapered jawline (D); soft and slightly short fleshy arms and thighs (D); delicately rounded cheekbones (D) and cheeks (D); delicately tapered nose (D); very round, very large eyes (E); and very full, rounded, luscious lips (E).
In summary, GA has 8 Ds, 4 Cs, and 2 Es.
Thus, we can conclude Gillian Anderson is a majoirty D type, meaning she is a Theatrical Romantic: delicate, petite bone structure with a touch of yang that narrows the soft width of her features. She looks best in waist-emphasis outfits; small, delicate patterns; and carefully groomed, softened hairstyles.
THEATRICAL ROMANTIC DESCRIPTION
Tumblr media
Here is a transcription of David Kibbe's book I've taken from Aly Art's video here:
I'm going to read you the full description of the Theatrical Romantic Body Type by Kibbe from the book Metamorphosis....
Note: The following information should be taken as a broad outline of what makes a Theatrical Romantic. It is the overall combination of extreme yin with a slight yang undercurrent that creates this image identity category....
It is a delicately radiant physicality that is combined with the powerfully magnetic essence. Height: normally moderate to petite, usually 5'5" and under. Body type: soft and voluptuous, although trim and smallish as opposed to wide and "bulky." Hourglass figure-- curvy bustline and hips with a waspish waist. Soft or fleshy arms and legs. Bone structure: small and delicate. Slightly sharp edges: shoulders, jawline, cheekbones, or nose. Small hands and feet (in proportion to height.) Facial bones are small, delicate, and slightly sharp. Facial features: soft and lush. Large, luminous eyes-- sometimes slightly upturned, sometimes slightly "bedroom." Full, luscious lips; soft cheeks. Hair: soft and luxurious to the touch, maybe very silky and wispy or thick and wavy, curly. Coloring: any coloring is possible-- warm or cool, high contrast or blended-- but a Theatrical Romantic usually is quite vivid with a delicate complexion that is luminous or translucent. If overweight, the figure will remain hourglass with a defined waist. Upper arms, thighs, and face will become quite fleshy. Theatrical Romantic will normally not be extremely tall; have large, wide bones; have large hands and feet; have extremely prominent facial bones or features; have a "boyishly" straight figure devoid of a defined waist.
What's interesting about Gillian is that she is one of the rarer Theatrical Romantics-- one without a huge bust (which is one of the too oft used hallmarks of both Romantic Types.) Again, further proof that the whole must be taken into account instead of just a glance and a guess.
Other Theatrical Romantic women include: Ann Margret, Heidi Lamar, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jane Seymor, Jean Harlowe, Mila Kunis, Morgan Fairchild, Salma Hayek, Selena Gomez, and Vivian Leigh.
COMPARING THEATRICAL ROMANTICS TO OTHER TYPES
I'm going to be heavily quoting Aly Art throughout, as it will save me a lot of time and mental energy.
Dramatics
Theatrical Romantics are the second softest of all the types, with yang "drama" of their frame only differentiating it slightly from pure Romantics.
Dramatics, however, are the most yang of all the types-- "more elongated, more angular, more square and more sharp" in each angle of their silhouette.
Soft Dramatics have the sharper, elongated bones of the Dramatics-- again, making TRs appear shorter in their height and limbs-- but with layer of soft flesh overlaying their silhouette. While "fleshier" than Dramatics, they will still "appear heavier, bigger, or more pronounced."
Tumblr media
(Left Photo: TR Gillian Anderson, left; D Cate Blanchett, right.
Right Photo: SD Christian Bale, left; TR Gillian Anderson, right.)
Naturals
Flamboyant Naturals and Theatrical Romantics are very, very different. "Flamboyant Naturals look taller because of their longer vertical line, and they consist of blunt edges-- more squarish shoulders, more squarish figure. Even when they have a waist (sometimes)... you perceive them as straight, not... as curvy women. When you look at Theatrical Romantics, you perceive them as curvy women" (even if their actual measurement ratios happen to be less curvaceous than a fellow FN.) "Theatrical Romantics look shorter...."
"Soft Naturals are slightly wider in bones-- in their face, in their body, in their ribcage sometimes, in their hip area sometimes. They look a bit stronger and a bit taller; and with this blunt bone structure they have a softness on top. Theatrical Romantics have thin bones and are shorter; but on top of that, they have lush roundness."
Tumblr media
(Left Photo: FN Amy Adams, left; TR Gillian Anderson, right.
Right Photo: SN Helen Mirren, left; TR Gillian Anderson, right.)
Classics
Soft Classics share softness in common with Theatrical Romantics; but Soft Classic looks much more moderate.... Doesn't look as short or petite" (even if the Theatrical Romantic isn't a petite 5'2".) "They have something in common; still Soft Classic doesn't look as lush, and also looks... more proportionate, more symmetrical in general."
Dramatic Classic are more angular. They look taller; they look more moderate in size; they can be slightly more squarish and slightly broad; they might have slight musculature. And Theatrical Romantics do not: they're much softer; they're small looking; they're not angular; they have more delicate bones, thinner bones; and they're not as symmetrical. And sometimes outfits that look amazing on Dramatic Classics look pretty severe and "dry" (opposite of "lush") on Theatrical Romantics.
Tumblr media
(TR Gillian Anderson, left; SC Helen Mirren, right.)
Gamines
"Flamboyant Gamines can look slightly elongated in their smallish frame: they are not tall, they are not big looking, they are pretty small looking. Sometimes they can be slightly broadly angular; sometimes they can have some muscles. Can be slightly squarish in the shoulders-- they can be slightly squarish in general." In comparison to Theatrical Romantics, they can appear more "electric, tomboyish." (Two classic examples are FG Penelope Cruz and TR Salma Hayek.) "Flamboyant Gamines' arms can be more elongated; their legs can be a bit more elongated They can look more straightish in figure. And Theatrical Romantics look pretty delicate-- they have shortish hands, shortish legs, shortish arms."
Soft Gamines and Theatrical Romantics are often confused because SGs are "small and also can have sharp bones, and figure, and soft flesh, and roundness. But again: Soft Gamines are slightly more angular than Theatrical Romantics. They are more "playful" looking because of the angularity in their chin, in their shoulders; and Theatrical Romantics are not angular to the same degree. Soft Gamines also skew more "girlish" than full-figured "woman" in comparison to TRs-- "but not always!"
Tumblr media

Bottom Photo: TR Gillian Anderson, left; SG Reese Witherspoon, right.)
Romantics
Romantics are the softest of all the types, lacking the extra sharpness or "drama" of the Theatrical Romantics. "Normally, their shoulders are rounder. Also, Romantics have slightly wider bones-- also petite, also short like Theatrical Romantics.... Theatrical Romantics have slightly thinner bones; and Romantics, wider bones."
Tumblr media
LINES, SILHOUETTES, AND OTHER FASHION DETAILS
But how do we dress the illustrious Gillian Anderson?
Again, I quote Aly Art quoting David Kibbe:
Shapes should be rounded, intricate, and ornate with slight sharpness at the edge. You might not look as good in geometrics; in chunky or bulky shapes; in sharp, severe shapes.
Tumblr media
Line and silhouette: silhouettes should be hourglass, emphasizing the curves and showcasing the waist. The waist should be sharply defined, and the shoulders should be crisp. Tapering at the wrists, hemline, and knee areas. Lines should be soft, draped, flowing, clingy, ornate, and intricate. You might not look as good in all-severe silhouettes; in all oversized or unconstructed silhouettes; in all straight lines; in all sharp lines; in all wide or horizontal lines; in all long vertical lines that hide the waist.
Tumblr media
Detail: details should be intricate, ornate, delicate, and quite lavish.... excess detail trim is important to help frame and focus the face. Bows, soft ruffles, and sparkly applique are excellent. Necklines should be soft and draped or sheered and gathered. Shoulder tucks, gathers, and bouffant shapes are perfect. Sleeves should be tapered at the wrist. Delicate and ornate buttons and trim are advisable. Waistline should always be emphasized: gathers, sheering, and draping at the waist are necessary for softness and intricacy.
Tumblr media
You might not look as good in plain or minimal detail; in sharp or severe detail; in extremely oversized, bulky detail; in symmetrical, subdued detail; in crisp, perky detail.
CONCLUSION
Tumblr media
We now know the yin and yang of Gillian's bone structure, which will help teach us what silhouettes, lines, shoes, accessories, hairstyles, and even hair colors would suit her best.
But that's another post for another time.
Thanks for reading~
Enjoy!

How do you decide what to draw, and when it's done?
Tumblr media
Text: "This is a great question! I usually "wing it" when it comes to deciding when my drawing is done. (More below)" "Finding ideas...? It kind of depends! Sometimes I'll get a strong picture form in my head while I'm doing something else. Other times I just sit and draw whatever."
Now to elaborate on my process for deciding when to stop, how far to go with shading, etc. Most of it has to do with how I feel about drawing something, but also to do with keeping things visually appealing. Here I've laid out each general step of my drawing process from start to finish:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Sketch, Meant to be quick and generally convey the subject. I will sometimes draw and post things just as cleaned up sketches if just adding visuals to a text post, for shit-posting, or just if I'm not too interested in what I'm drawing.
2. Line art, I almost never post *just* line art, but i will occasionally post line art with one color to fill in the silhouette to help with contrast and character recognizability.
3. Flat color, I often post ask responses at this stage (maybe with simple hard-edged shadows here or there), but outside of ask responses I only leave character reference art at this stage just because the colors are purest for the character. I don't usually leave it without simple shading because it can be hard to read the subject's form, and its not my cup of tea. I lightly airbrush a warm color over the line art so that the harsh black doesn't contrast too much with the bright colors.
4. Shaded, a step up from simple hard edge shading I'll layer more than one shading color (layer set to multiply and lowered opacity) and blend out the edges in some places to soften the form. Then I add lighting and highlights - first using a textured soft airbrush over a large area, then use a round airbrush with hard edges for the highlights, blending out the edges in some areas to soften the form. This is usually where i stop for simpler character pieces, either for ask responses or for personal art. (Highlight layers are set to "add-glow")
5. Atmosphere, or adding additional shading elements to engage the subject with an environment or specific lighting condition. Here I've done a sunset lighting condition - I put a purple color over the whole subject set to multiply and opacity lowered, then airbrushed a reddish orange tone (on a separate layer, set to add-glow and opacity lowered) over the highlighted areas to bring warmth back to the lit spots. Then deepened the shadows using the hard edge airbrush again, a dark blue color (multiply layer, lower opacity), and then blending some of the edges out to show the form better. This is where I'll merge the line-art layer with what i now have of the coloring and shading, if i didn't already do so prior. Last I went back over the highlights with the orangey color (add glow, lower opacity). Once I get to rendering like this, I don't often stop here because by this point I'm likely hyper fixated and will keep pushing the values and adding details until I get to 6.
6. Details and bounce light. I texture-airbrushed a blue bounce light color, erased some hard edges in using that hard edged airbrush and then blending some of the edges out. This then gave me a guide to add in bounce-highlights with a hard pen, that i blended out in some places. I then further pushed the main highlights using a hard pen and again, blended out the edges. All layers set to add glow and opacity lowered. This is where I'll usually stop for finished rendered pieces, because I struggle to find other things to add or change, and the hyperfixation is thinning out and caving into my hunger/sleepiness. Might add hard white highlight details, but those are the finishing touches.
7. Wtf details. Added in hair strand details and fly-aways, blades of grass, I'm up way too late and struggling to end the drawing process - Or im just enjoying rendering the hair. I almost never add in stray hairs like this, but it's something i enjoy visually.
Again, a lot of where I stop comes down to my energy, time, and the vibes I'm going for. Hope this answers your question!

oh good luck with your art journey! my experience with digital art is pretty dated (as in a decade + levels dated) and i might be too out of touch to give beginner tips but regardless, allow me to attempt
Programs: it would help to know which hardware you have for digital but ill put down some i have experience in 1. Clip Studio Paint Pro - PC/Android/ipad/everywhere i think? unfortunately they betrayed humankind and its now a subscription everywhere but on PC. i bought a one-time license years years years ago on sale and its probably the best available on my end. I also got it on subscription on android so i can sync works between my PC and tablet. its very flexible in a way that you can draw with it in the most basic way single layer sketches or whatever but they have so many features and keep adding more.
2. procreate - ipad only never been an apple user but my friend is, and he's been a procreate user forever. he recently tried CSP on ipad though and he still claims he likes procreate better for ease of use and compatibility with tablet ergonomics and apple pen
3. medibang paint - pc/android/ipad
free forever. and out of all the free programs i recommended my other digital art newbie friend this is what he liked best.
4. adobe photoshop - dont even look at this the only reason i have one is im leeching off company license. its still unfortunately the industry standard tho but CSP is much cheaper and has the same controls and most of the basic functions 5. Paint Tool SAI - my first art program but i haven't tried it again. honestly still think this has the best brush flexibility and pen pressure control ----- As for tutorials, i find digital art has such a steep and high skill ceiling and its a challenge im still tackling and probably will forever tackle haha. I'm trying to osmosis painting techniques from splash art painters from League of Legends who most of them post complete timelapses (my favorite being Bo Chen) where you can study not just their techniques but like, art directions that make their pieces striking. Anyway, I also promised a friend I would make a simple coloring tutorial so maybe after inktober hustle, I would look for a piece there I'd use for the guide.
---- Traditional to digital is never a satisfactory process to me but if you can, invest on a scanner. I use an epson v39, had it for years.
Tumblr media
scanned vs edited. the goal is to at least get the white of the paper as white as possible and the blacks the blackest, without whitewashing/burning the rest of the colors. Level correction function is your best friend here and most art programs have that.
Tumblr media
Then i just clean dust and errors and slide the contrasts around until it looks as close to the original piece
If you have a decent phone camera, you can get away just posting instagram aesthetic pics with materials framing it or smth and just edit as usual. natural light tends to be a lot more forgiving than the harsh light of scanners anyway.
Tumblr media
Anyway I hope this helps and have fun learning!

Anything Goes - A Riverdale Thesis Statement
So, I was listening to "Anything Goes" of the Riverdale album recently to luxuriate in the majesty that is Ashleigh Murray. (She is so sorely missed.)
I find this song to be so deeply important to Riverdale as a way of understanding where it's coming from on all levels.
There are a few songs they've done over the years that I consider to be "thesis statements" for the show. Seventeen is another big one, but let's focus on this one for now. I'll talk about that song another day.
In-depth rambling beneath the cut. <3
I think Anything Goes is appropriately positioned in Season 3 because this is the season where the style of the show starts to reveal itself as more heightened and abstract.
Riverdale, if anything, is a burlesque number. Slowly peeling back its more accessible layers into something entirely unique and strange.
Season 3 is when the show starts to reveal that it's not your typical teen drama and it never was. (This is why a lot of people struggle with this season and drop off. It really is the culling blade. I will release my essay on this in due time.)
Anyway.
For those that might not be aware, "Anything Goes" is the title song of the musical "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter.
Here's the original version in one of my favorite performances of the song by Sutton Foster in a rehearsal. Seriously, she's incredible. (Maybe I just love giant tap numbers, but this fills me with delight every time I see it.)
youtube
In any case, the song's lyrics are about how the times have changed. Standards of morality are lower than ever before. I think that, in its original meaning, it does apply to Riverdale, but there's a bit more to it than that. Let's unpack.
As Cole Porter puts it:
"In olden days a glimpse of stocking was Looked on as something shocking now Heaven knows Anything goes"
This easily applies to the salacious nature of Riverdale, especially in the earlier seasons. I mean, could Cole Porter have even conceived of a kinky lesbian sex scene intercut with violent boxing? Anything goes, indeed.
And sexual stories have a heavy stigma attached to them. Eroticism, though one of the most popular topics and genres since the beginning of time, is often treated as a lesser form of art. Too much sex in your story and it becomes "pornography", a word often spit rather than said.
Moving on.
The second verse says:
"Good authors too who once knew better words Now only use four letter words Writing prose Anything goes"
Though Riverdale doesn't really use a ton of "four letter words", this verse can easily apply to Riverdale's low-brow plots and ideas. Bloody serial killers. Secret siblings. Murder. Mothmen. Etc. Etc.
Horror and melodrama, two of Riverdale's most beloved genres, have also been treated as second-class citizens in the art world for ages. This is especially true nowadays even with the rise of prestige, high-concept horror. The genre, on the whole with notable exceptions, is still treated as a lesser art form.
"The world's gone mad today And good's bad today Black's white today And day's night today And all the guys today That women prize today Are just silly gigolos Anything goes Anything goes"
"Everything is wrong," the song declares. The world is upside down.
A couple of things about this section.
1: It sounds to me like the haters lamenting the state of art and the world today. "I can't believe that show has seven seasons." "It got too weird." Etc. Etc.
2: I feel like the first two lines are a tongue in cheek praise of Camp.
3: The line about the guys of today that women prize makes me think back to my first point about the thirsty nature of this show.
Do I sound insane yet?
Regardless, the lyrics can be taken either sarcastically or sincerely. So, in one version the singer is lamenting the state of affairs and in another, they're delighted with how much freedom there is.
Riverdale obviously falls in the latter interpretation, but I can't help but hear the first one as well because it echoes criticism of the show.
Two more bits I want to mention.
"So though I'm not a great romancer, I Know you're bound to answer when I propose Anything goes"
If I had a criticism of Riverdale, it would be its lack of polish. It might not be the best "romancer" as it were, but oh, how can I reply with anything but an enthusiastic "YES. <3" when it proposes, through its unrelenting, feverish madness that truly, anything goes?
Riverdale hops from genre to genre and style to style with such reckless avarice that I genuinely swoon. It embraces a hedonism and indulgence that "high art" scoffs at. Highly technical works of art, though beautiful and thought-provoking are often quite restrained. They're often very focused on one topic or style. Their limited scope allows for a cleaner execution.
Riverdale pours all of American culture into one giant bowl and hands you a spoon. It's messy and unrefined. It's hard to swallow, at times. It's unbalanced, but god, does it burst with charm and flavor. Maybe my palette, cut on technique and training, was just longing for something that tasted of heart. Either way, I think this is Riverdale's greatest strength.
Finally.
"And all the pains you've got If any brains you've got From those little radios Anything goes Anything goes Anything"
I think this is a cheeky dare to look more deeply at this show. It's daring the listener to meet Riverdale with their heart (their pains) and with whatever brains they might have left after being glued to their "little radios" for so long.
That's definitely not what the original song was saying, but I'm only looking at it in the context of Riverdale.
EDIT**: OMG I TOTALLY FORGOT TO INCLUDE THIS. It's like, half the reason I wrote the post.
So, one more thing about this particular version of the song that makes it fit Riverdale so perfectly.
The style is dark, sexy, and almost angry. It's almost accusatory. This fits in with my statments about how the song dares you into thinking more deeply about it.
It teases you for liking its thirst traps and slasher gore and this tone is not nearly as "Golly!" as the original. No. It's almost somber. It's a dark cabaret number rather than an upbeat tap song.
And this shift in tone is significant.
It mirrors the shift from pie in the sky Americana in the original comics to the dark, gothic vibe of the modern Archieverse and Riverdale itself.
It embraces a smoldering darkness that relishes itself. It's hedonistic and sultry in a way the original was not.
youtube
So, yeah. This song feels like a thesis statement of the show to me. When it comes to Riverdale's genre, style, subject matter, ideas, characters, and everything else...
Anything goes.

survey #189
Layer 1: The Basics Name: Brittany Age: 27 Birthday: February 5th Gender: Female Zodiac sign: Aquarius
Layer 2: Your Family Do you have any brothers or sisters? Two full-blooded sisters, one half-brother, two half-sisters I know, and another that I've never met, so I don't REALLY consider her my "sister," I guess. Do you have any pets? A cat, snake, and dog. Do you still live with your parents? I live with my mom. Do you have any stepparents? My dad remarried, so technically yeah. How many cousins do you have? Oh hell if I know.
Layer 3: Your Friends Who is your best friend? My boyfriend and mother. Who have you been friends with the longest? That I still really associate with, Summer. What do you like to do with your friends? Admittedly I don't do much with friends that aren't my boyfriend, but I LIKE doing lots of stuff with such people. I like just spending time together, going out doing fun stuff, or things at each other's houses. Do you have more friends online or in real life? Oh, easily online. I'm generally closer to those online friends, too. I find it way, way easier to be myself online.
Layer 4: Your Home Do you live in a home, apartment, duplex, trailer, etc? A normal, one-storied house. How many rooms are there in your house? The living room, kitchen, and dining area are what I consider one room, just with the fireplace area forming a divider, so six-ish, if you count the master bedroom bathroom as its own room. Is your home large or small? It's larger than what we need. This house just worked because it was basically given to us as the former resident's death wish. If our landlord wasn't who it is we wouldn't be able to afford its proper rent. What is your favorite room in your house, and why? I dunno, honestly. Do you prefer having people over to your house, or would you rather go to theirs? I prefer to visit other people's places because I'm a very awkward host that doesn't know what to do with guests.
Layer 5: Can you... Can you fold your tongue into the taco shape? Yeah. Can you touch your toes without bending your knees? I USED to be able to hug the soles of my feet, but I haven't tried this in a very long time. With my current shape though, it's definitely doubtful. Can you tie a cherry stem in a knot with your tongue? No. Can you hold up your end of a physical fight? Oh there's no way. Can you do any yo-yo tricks? Not that I know of.
Layer 6: Who Who inspires you the most, and why? Girt. I want to be a better person for him specifically. I want to be a partner that's worth being with. My mom is also very noteworthy; I want to make her proud. Who helps you maintain your sanity? Girt, Mom, friends, YouTubers that will never know I exist lmao. Who do you go to most often for advice? Mom or Girt, depending on the topic. Who knows you better than you know yourself? My mom. Who is someone that you would die or put your life on the line for, no questions asked? Girt, my mom, siblings, my nieces and nephew, my closest friends... honestly, a whole lot of people. It's not very hard to get on this list.
Layer 7: Do you... Do you still eat sandwiches without the crusts? I've always eaten mine with the crust intact. I've always just eaten in first since it's my least favorite part of the sandwich, but I still like it. Do you typically finish your meal at a restaurant, or need to take a container home? I will usually finish my stuff, or leave very little left. Do you pull an Oreo apart in order to eat it? Sometimes; it depends on if I have milk to dip or not. Do you read a lot of gossip magazines? I never have. Do you make friends easily? No, I'm way too quiet and reclusive. I don't put myself out there.
Layer 8: How Many? How many people live in your house with you? Just my mom. How many pets have you had in your lifetime? Too many to count, mainly cats. How many meals do you eat a day? Two or three.
Layer 9: How How do you typically get to school or work? I don't have either, but in the past, my mom's driven me. How do you deal with a breakup? OH HUNNY YOU DON'T WANT MY ADVICE HERE LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO How do you like to help others? I enjoy listening to others and being a source of comfort. I don't have much else to offer; I can't lend money or a car or stuff like that, but you can bet I'll be there to listen to what's on your mind, give advice if desired and I feel I have any, and give hugs. How do you sleep in bed? I normally have one leg pulled upwards at an angle, and I'm primarily on my stomach/kinda side.
Layer 10: What What do you think happens when we die? I don't know; I've tried to find a personal answer I believe for most of my life, but I've accepted in recent years I'm just not gonna know 'til I get there. I DO know I believe in the human spirit, and I lean towards us having some sort of existence after death, but I have absolutely zero idea what that existence is like. Maybe heavenly, maybe we just exist as roaming souls that are barely even cognisant of their past, who knows. I'm not exhausting myself trying to figure it out while I'm alive. What toys did you enjoy most as a child? Mostly plastic animals and dinosaurs. I know I liked things that lit up, but I think that's a very normal kid thing, lol. What do you do if you witness someone being awful to someone else? I'd say this depends greatly. In most cases I can think up though, I'd speak up, or call someone with authority.
Layer 11: Where Where is your favorite place to eat out? As far as fast food goes, probably Sonic, but if you're including sit-down restaurants, Olive Garden or The Cheesecake Factory. Where is the place that has the best ice cream in your area? Idk. Where did you meet your current or last significant other? High school band class. Where can you be found at 7 PM., typically? Here at home, in the spare room on the laptop. Where can you find the best French fries? Either Bojangle's or McDonald's, depends on what I'm up for. Bojangle's has a specific seasoning, McD's is just good simple fries.
Layer 12: When When did you find out the truth about Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy? I dunno, I'd assume the normal age to tell kids this stuff. When do you typically fall asleep? oh this varies WAY too much, I have serious problems falling asleep. When was the last time that someone paid you a compliment? I don't know. When do you feel most comfortable? When I'm at home alone.
Layer 13: Why Why do you enjoy taking surveys so much? It passes time, but just as importantly is I've found it's therapeutic and help me arrange my feelings and thoughts. Why aren’t you doing something else right now? I don't feel like it right now.
Layer 14: If... If you had a million dollars, what would you spend it on? Buy my mom a new car, her own house, probably a place for Girt and me, do some charity donations, then I'd have to see what's left, I don't even know how much your average car or house costs lol. If you found out someone was cheating on you, would you ever take them back? Nope. If you found a wallet with cash in the street, including identification, would you turn it in? Why or why not? Yes, the guilt would eat me alive otherwise. They might need that money just as much as or even more than I do. If you could have any food right now, what would you like? I've been craving a double chocolate cake super bad lately and it's kinda driving me insane lol If you found out that the world was going to end tomorrow, how would you spend your last day? With my family and Girt's.
Layer 15: Firsts When did you lose your first tooth? You expect me to remember? lol Who was your first teacher that you ever had? Mrs. Makeel or something like that. When did you first learn how to ride a bike? I dunno, the normal age. When was the first time you had sex? I still haven't had proper sex. I started doing sexual stuff at like, 16. Did your first birthday have a theme to it? I dunno.
Layer 16: Lasts Last person you texted: My ma. Last drink you sipped: Flavored water. Last time you rode a bike: Oh, it's been years. I used to LOVE doing this, though. I'd often grab my iPod and go out riding down our path after school for quite a while. Last time you swam in a pool: Around two months ago, when Ma and I went to a friend's place. Last person you hugged: Girt.
Layer 17: Favorites Favorite color: Pink, specifically lighter shades. Favorite season: Autumn. Favorite shape: Out of the very basic ones, circles. I think they're satisfying to look at. Favorite letter: I guess maybe "z." Favorite number: 13, I guess.
Layer 18: This or That Pepsi or Coke? Coke, I don't like Pepsi. Movies or television? Idk, I guess it depends on what it is. Phone or tablet? Honestly, I've never really used a tablet. Fruits or vegetables? Fruits. Animals or humans? Animals, of course.
Layer 19: Which Which Pokemon is your favorite? Ninetales, Espeon, and Houndoom. Which day of the week is your favorite? I don't have one. Which birthday celebration was the most memorable for you? 16th, and not for good reasons. Which holiday is your favorite? Halloween aesthetically, but I enjoy the experience of Christmas more. Which shoe do you put on first? idk
Layer 20: Love Life/Relationships1 What is the name of your first love? Jason. How many times can you honestly say you’ve been in love? Twice. Have you ever been in a relationship before that was abusive in any way? No. Have you ever been engaged or married before? No. Do you have any children? No.
Layer 21: Jobs, Dreams, & Goals What did you want to be when you grew up (as a little kid)? A paleontologist was my first career goal. What do you aspire to be now? What interests you? A nature/wildlife photographer. Art interests me. What is the most recent goal you’ve achieved? A milestone in my legs healing, I suppose. What is a goal you are still striving to reach? To actually make money from my photography. Have you ever won any sort of awards before? If so, for what? Yeah, various academic stuff as well as sports involvement as a kid.
Layer 22: Opinions & Beliefs Pro-life or pro-choice? Pro-choice to the day I fucking die. Were you raised with any sort of religious background? If so, then what? I was raised Roman Catholic, but despise it today and even as a kid, I didn't get it. Democrat, Republican, or Independent? Independent. For or against the death penalty? For, but only in VERY extreme cases and/or severe repeat offenses. Thoughts on assisted suicide? I absolutely believe people basically on their deathbed deserve to make one final choice when it comes to their peace. I think it's very unfair to let someone slowly, painfully wither if they don't want that.
Layer 23: Currently/Today/Present What day is it? October 25th. Holy shit, I cannot believe how fast October went. What’s the weather like outside? Sky is clear, and at the time I'm answering this, it's morning, so it's pretty cold out. What have you eaten? I had some Special K cereal. Did you run any errands? No. What time is it? 8:57 AM right now.
Layer 24: Yesterday Did you have a work shift? I'm unemployed. Did you eat out anywhere? No. Was it snowing? No. Who did you last say goodnight to? I didn't say exactly that to anyone yesterday. Did anything unusual happen? No.
Layer 25: Tomorrow Do you have to go to school/class? I'm not in school anymore. Does this day have any sort of significance to you? No. What is a chore that needs to get done? I'll need to clean Roman's litter. Will you hang out with friends? No. What time will you be expected to be awake by? No specific time, but I generally wake up early.
Layer 26: Have You Ever Performed a magic trick successfully? Yeah, I used to be obsessed with those little boxes you could get from Scholastic, lol. Sat or laid on a rooftop and looked at the stars? Yes. Walked around with your underwear on inside out or backwards all day without realizing it? Not that I remember. Touched a snake? Well yeah, I own one and have had two in the past, and I've held friends' snakes. Even as a kid I know I'd pick up little ones. Been bitten by an animal? If so, what animal? Playfully by cats. My old baby iguana Kaiju also did.
Layer 27: School Life Are preschool and kindergarten mandatory where you live? I know preschool isn't, but I think kindergarten is? Were you or anyone you knew homeschooled? I was homebound at the end of the 8th grade. I'm not sure if I know others. Did you attend public or private school? Mostly public, but my last college was private. Were you bullied in school, popular, or somewhere in-between? None of these; I think the best way to put it is just ignored. I wasn't anybody special and minded my own quiet business. What is the highest level of education that you completed? Some college.
Layer 28: Your Appearance Eye color: Grayish blue. Hair color: Brown, but with a blonde-ish fade from where it used to be green but faded away. Height: 5'4.5'' Weight: nope Do you have freckles, moles, beauty marks, or birthmarks - and where? I have a birthmark on my left forearm, and little freckles in random places throughout my body.
Layer 29: Electronics, Internet, & Social Media How much time do you spend on the Internet per day? Basically almost every waking moment and it's super sad. Which social media platforms do you belong to? Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr (does that count?). When’s the last time you replaced the batteries in your television remote? Oh hell if I know. Are you more likely to stream movies and shows on your laptop, or cast them to your television? Uh, out of the two, I'm watching on my laptop. Do you have an e-reader, or do you prefer actual books? I STRONGLY prefer actual books, like I have absolutely zero urge to read digitally, and I think it's because it's a very rare escape FROM technology for me.
Layer 30: Are You Are you still in school? No. Are you a member of the LGBTQ+ community? Yes, I'm pansexual. Are you looking forward to anything coming soon? Yeah, a surprise birthday party for Girt's mom. Are you dreading anything coming soon? Hm, I don't believe so, nothing that's truly "soon." Are you gullible or naive? Definitely not.
Layer 31: Does Does your workplace make you feel like you can never take a day off without feeling guilty about it? I don't work. Does anyone out there hate you? I'm sure. Does talking about sex make you uncomfortable? If it's about MY sex life, yes. I'm extremely private about those details, but I'm not uncomfortable if other people are talking about their experiences. Does crying make you feel less strong? No, I absolutely will not feed into the bullshit that crying is a sign of weakness.
Layer 32: Would You Do the Polar Bear Plunge? I would for charity. Ever try to walk across a room blindfolded? No. Swim with sharks? Possibly. I definitely would if I was in one of those safe cages. Go into outer space, given the chance? No, but only because of how long space expeditions are. I would miss Earth and the people I love way, way too much. But if it could be like a day-long adventure, THEN I totally would. Go out in public, looking how you do right now? I'd go in my mom's car dressed how I am (in pjs) if I was just riding somewhere and not getting out, but I wouldn't go in anywhere right now.
Layer 33: Pets/Animals Do you have any pets? If so, what type, and their names... I have a gray and white domestic shorthair of some sort named Roman, a champagne morph ball python named Venus, and my mom's dog is a chihuahua named Cookie. If not, what type of pet have you always wanted? N/A What is your favorite animal? Meerkats, of course. Do you think it is cruel to have circus animals? of course it is????? How often do you walk your dog, if you have one? How often do you scoop the litterbox, if you have a cat? Cookie doesn't go on walks. I scoop the litterbox every few days.
Layer 34: Food What is your favorite breakfast item? Cinnamon rolls. What is your favorite kind of dessert? Probably cakes. Do you eat all three meals everyday? Not every day, no. What’s the longest you’ve gone without food? I dunno, but nothing very long.
Layer 35: Past Does your past ever come back to haunt you at times? Yeah, I think everyone has moments of this. What is one of your favorite memories of the past? I cherish times of playing make-believe with my sister or even myself as a little kid. What is something that you used to do in the past, but no longer do? Pray. Which historical time period would you like to go back to and check out? The time of dinosaurs lol, just put me in a safe bubble.
Layer 36: Future Do you think you will ever get married one day? Yes. Do you plan on ever getting a different job in the future, or are you happy with the one you’ve got? I want a job to begin with. I'm never going to be happy without some sort of career. What age do you plan to retire at? Or do you plan on working til you’re dead? How the hell should I know? What is something on your bucket list worth mentioning? I want to go to the KMP to photograph and interact with the meerkats, specifically Whiskers individuals. If given the opportunity to see how your future plays out, would you take it, or no? I... don't think so. What if it's awful? I'd rather just not know that's the end of me.
Layer 37: Hygiene How often do you shower? I struggle with self-care for a number of reasons and I do not want to share this. How often do you brush your teeth? More than I used to. Do you actually iron any of your clothes? *I* don't, my mom probably would if it was a fancy shirt and I was going to like, an interview or something. How often do you do laundry? Wow I hate this section, *I* don't, my mom does. She does our stuff together, and I don't keep track of how often the washer or dryer is on. How long do you use a bath towel before switching it out? Only once, but keep in mind I don't shower as much as I should so using it twice would be extremely gross.
Layer 38: Clothing, Makeup, & Style Do you wear nail polish? If so, how often do you paint your nails? No. How would you describe your sense of style? Some mix of geek, goth, and metalhead, I guess. Are there any popular trends that you do not find appealing? I'm sure there are, but I don't keep track of this stuff. Where do you typically buy your clothing from? Wal-Mart or Hot Topic. What sorts of accessories do you wear/use? Piercings and one ring. Sometimes I'll put on a necklace.
Layer 39: Hobbies Do you still color, even as an adult? Only when I draw something, really, which is already rare. Do you/would you like to crochet, knit, cross-stitch, etc? Not really. What’s the last thing you crafted all by yourself? I drew something like a year ago. Do you use Pinterest at all? Yeah. What’s the last thing that you cooked or baked? I don't cook.
Layer 40: Dislikes List some of your pet peeves here. People trying to make conversation with me when I'm obviously listening to music (yes I know this is bitchy but it's like my biggest pet peeve there is), "tough guys," the "kill it with fire" mentality towards snakes and spiders (no seriously I fucking despise you), continuously pestering me when I need alone time (not in the case of like, ACTUALLY needing me, this is mostly a situation I've encountered with kids, who obviously don't get it and I can't be TRULY mad at), putting so much effort into a drawing and it not coming out right, competitive people (I don't get their mindset at all and it just makes you look really shitty to me), non-meat eaters acting holier than thou towards people who have meat as part of their diet, etc. What are some things that annoy you about yourself? I catastrophize like NOBODY'S goddamn business, I assume the absolute worst with like everything (this especially includes assuming everyone hates me/pretends to like me), I underestimate the shit out of myself, I'm VERY socially flighty/awkward, etc., blah blah blah this question is gonna make me upset at myself lol Is there anyone out there who you actually hate? Who? That I personally know/have known, I don't think so. The closest would definitely be Sara, but I don't feel confident saying I hate her; "hate" indicates too much of my energy going towards her, to me. I dislike the shit out of her, but "hate" just seems too intense, especially as time passes. What is a feeling that you dislike? Embarrassment. It's the worst sensation to me, I am so absurdly sensitive towards it, like I basically wanna die. Do you get some ugly road rage while driving? I don't drive, but when I did, I was way too terrified and passive of a driver to feel this. People with road rage scare me.
Layer 41: Random Have you ever successfully pogoed on a pogo stick? Yes; I got one one Christmas as a kid and got pretty good at it. Have you ever mastered the jump rope? Not "mastered," but I got decent at it. I could jump in with one rope going, and came extremely close to jumping in while doing double dutch. Do you know what it feels like to be truly happy? As a kid, I think so. In my adult life, I think I've had moments, but it's hard to tell with depression. What’s your favorite type of survey, and why? Ones with totally random questions that you generally wouldn't be asked.
Layer 42: Music What are some of your favorite genres of music? Mostly metal, I think industrial and heavy, specifically. I also like rock, alternative, and indie. What are some music genres that you can’t stand? Rap and country. If you had a blank pair of concert tickets, who would you hope to be going to see? Do you honestly expect me to say anything but Rammstein lmao Do you still listen to music on the radio from time to time? No. iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, or YouTube? I normally do YouTube, especially since I tend to binge songs on repeat.
Layer 43: Books What were some of your favorite books as a child?Stellaluna, What Makes a Rainbow?, Rainbow Fish, 10 Minutes 'til Bedtime, When You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Chrysanthemum, lots of the classics for my age group. What genre of books do you typically read most often? Young adult fantasy, maybe. What are some of your favorite books as an adult?Johnny Got His Gun, The Outsiders, Wings of Fire, The Handmaid's Tale. What is a book that you were required to read for school that you actually enjoyed? The Outsiders was the main one. Do you read any newspapers or magazines anymore? No.
Layer 43: Around the World Where’s the best place you’ve taken a vacation and/or day trip to? A really clear lake multiple hours away from where we live now. We'd been visiting my younger sister's childhood best friend. Fish and stuff were accustomed to human presence so you swam right with them, and everything was SO clear. Oh yeah, of course Disney World was amazing too, but my memories of it are faint because I was quite young. Where is somewhere that you’d like to go someday, assuming you have the funds to do so? Alaska, particularly at a good time of year to see the Northern Lights. I'm very confident I'd cry. Where do your family members originate from? My ancestry includes German, Irish, and Polish, on my mom's side. We don't know Dad's heritage. What is your favorite type of ethnic cuisine? Honestly, probably just basic bitch American lmfao What is something that is typically representative of your own culture? Cheeseburgers? lmao
Layer 44: Would you rather... Drink apple juice or grape juice? Apple, grape juice is repulsive. Wear pants or shorts? Pants. I never wear shorts. Be taller or shorter? I'm fine with where I am. Go to a zoo or an aquarium? Zoo. Visit an art gallery or a museum? Science museum. But an art gallery sounds nice, too.
Layer 45: Movies Do you remember what the first movie was that you saw in theaters? I don't. What are some of your favorite movies you’ve seen? The Lion King has my heart, and I even love the "live action" remake. The Meerkats documentary is fucking beautiful, the cinematography is unreal. What genre of movie do you typically enjoy? Horror and fantasy stuff. I can enjoy comedies, too. What is a movie you’ve seen that you weren’t expecting to like, but were pleasantly surprised? Uhhhh let's see... yeah I actually don't know, I'm not one to watch movies much even if I think I WILL like them.
Layer 46: Personality Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert? I'm way more of an introvert. Are you more easygoing and laid back, or anal? I'm a very anxious person, but still laid back in situations where I'm comfortable. Are you kind to everyone who shows that they deserve kindness? I absolutely try to be. Describe your sense of humor. I don't really know, I don't think I understand my own well enough. I don't think I'm funny, so it's hard to indentify for me. Do you tend to over-share? In real life, hell fucking no, but I KNOOOOOOOOW I do online.
Layer 47: Celebrities Which celebrity has given their child the most unique name, in your opinion? *shrug* Are there any celebrities that you keep tabs on/read articles about often? I don't read articles on people, but I "keep up" with the Rammstein boys, as well as Markiplier, though I've eased up with knowing everything going on in his world. He's still the one YouTube channel I have notifs for though, I care about major things he shares. Who is/are your celebrity crush(es)? rzk is old enough to be my fucking father and i don't care Have you ever personally met someone famous before? If so, then who? No. Who is a celebrity that you’re getting tired of hearing about all the time? I mean, no one specifically because I don't hear about anyone excessively.
Layer 48: Emotions When was the last time you cried? I can't remember for sure. What are some things that you’re afraid of? Parasites (especially internal), tornadoes, pregnancy, driving, becoming paralyzed from the neck down, actually becoming diabetic, never losing the weight I want to lose, going through another serious breakup, living alone on the streets... There's honestly a lot of stuff. What is something small that makes you happy? People I cherish remembering little things about me. Who is the last person that you were angry with, and about what? Ummm not sure? Are you typically a shy or outgoing person? I am extremely shy.
Layer 49: Digging Deeper What is your favorite alcoholic beverage? Sangrias. How old were you when you got drunk for the first time? I've never been drunk, just tipsy. Do you smoke? No. Have you ever taken and sent naked pictures of yourself? No. Have you ever done any drugs other than marijuana? If so, which ones? I've never even tried weed.
Layer 50: Games What are some of your favorite video games? The Silent Hill franchise, Shadow of the Colossus, World of Warcraft, Spyro games (excluding Skylanders, I won't fucking touch it), the Resident Evil series, and mostly loads of other horror games. Do you have any computer games that you play regularly? Yeah, WoW. What was your favorite board game, growing up? I surprisingly liked "Mall Madness" a lot, even for a kid that didn't like shopping. How about your favorite card game? I liked poker at some point, but I haven't remembered the rules since I WAS a kid. How good are you at solving puzzles? (such as a Rubik’s cube, word puzzles, or putting together a jigsaw puzzle) I guess this depends on the puzzle, but I'm not exceptional at any.

hi! i'm giving these advices as a skincare enthusiast and not as a professional dermatologist 🥹
so when you do skincare it will be lightest/more runny products first. After cleanser, you can use toner. Toner as far as I know helps to prepare and your hydrate your skin so the following products can sink in better to your skin. There are toners you can use everyday. But toners with active ingredients like glycolic acid, aha, bha, and pha shouldn't be use everyday since they're exfoliating acids. better you use those 2-3x a week depending on how your skin can handle the actives. Toner is just optional tho.
after toner, serum/essence. essence and serums were kinda the same but different. Serums differs depending on your skin concerns (there are serums for acne, blemishes, etc.) meanwhile essence most of the time focuses on just hydration. you can use both everyday, but if you want a simpler routine you can just choose the serum since can target your concerns more and just choose a heavy moisturizer (if you have a dry skin dry skin). there are also serums with exfoliating acids tho, you can't use those everyday too.
next is moisturizer/hydrator. moisturizer is used when you want to lock moisture in your skin. while, hydrator is used when you want to attract moisture to your skin. you can use moisturizer if you have oily/normal skin. moisturizer is recommended for oily skin since it locks up moisture on the skin. the thing is when we cleanse our face, it strips away the moisture and oils in our skin, as a result the skin produces more moisture to your skin. putting moisturizer creates a trick that your skin is moisturize so your skin won't produce more oils. moisturizer is also advised for everyday use.
lastly, suncreen (during the day) with broad spectrum, and 30 spf and up is recommended. two finger rule, and also don't forget to reapply sunscreen when you're outside. wear sunscreen everyday, even if you'll just stay inside your house, rainy times, winter times, summer, etc.
extra 1: if you're planning to use retionol, cream retinol is better and easier to work with than serum type retinols. use sandwich method (moisturizer-retinol-moisturizer) if you're a beginner. retinol is not suitable for everyday use if you're a beginner, 1x a week is enough, and if your skin builds tolerance overtime you can then use it 2-3x a week the next month. you can't see instant result in retinol tho, sometimes it takes 3-9 months to see the results you're looking for. and also please start with a lower dosage retinol (0.1%) before going up (0.5% - 1%). research first before diving into retinol ♥️
extra 2: if you have sensitive skin please please please avoid exfoliating acids and the AlL nATuRAl skincares.
extra 3: never brush your teeth after cleansing your face. brush your teeth first before cleansing your face, its a must ♥️
extra 4: cleansing your face for 30secs - 1minute is recommended, especially if you have actives in your cleanser.
extra 5: have a one of two minutes before layering your skincare. let the first one sink in first for a minute of two before adding the next.
- 🥬
DUDE thank you so much. i can’t thank you enough you’re a saint for this thank you !!!
you’ve got me checking the ingredients on my toner now and trying to do math i dont know half this stuff but im listening. my toner does happen to have that glycolic acid thing so im thankful i havent been using that every day. i feel like my skin is so complicated because its dry but also oily and its sensitive but i dont really get breakouts or pimples. i cant ever tell what i need or dont need or whats good for my skin 😩
also i’ve never heard of a hydrator and im just sitting here reading this stuff and i feel so clueless wtf how are you SO smart how do you know all this stuff. /pos
ive been seeing a lot about retinol lately and im not entirely sure what it does like i need to do way more research i think but i saw a tiktok about it today and im like I Need That. ive never heard about the sandwich rule before though so thank you for that, and for the low dosage thing!! i’ll definitely do research and i think i also need to look at what brands are best (and also whats available for me where i live)
since getting this ask ive been cleansing my face for up to a minute which is something ive NEVER done before man i was always so quick and trying to get it over with as fast as possible. you’re putting me onto so much new stuff i cant thank you enough.
THANK YOU ANON you are so kind thank you for writing all of this im gonna screenshot and print it out man you’re amazing for this. thank you youre so smart 💗🙏🏻 i hope youre having an amazing day!

This probably has very little content, but a question came up that I've been thinking about for a while:
I've often wondered what the most unusual type of neural net (as in, the "weirdest" type of neural net out there, not necessarily the best type) is.
Obviously, there are a lot of algorithms
on the internet that give you an uncanny sense of "humanness." My
favorite of these is GANs -- something that is trained like an AI,
except with a loss function similar to the loss function used by the
kind of machine learning algorithms that already learn how to generate
images and text.
What I'm wondering is... what types of things look like a normal
neural net trained to do a very stupid thing, but without being
weirdly good at the original thing?
(This isn't really a research question, but I think it would be very
interesting, in a sense, to see what the field's answer is)
----
There's of course the obvious example -- GANs. The GAN-like models you can get with existing
algorithms (like adversarial examples) are just the very simplest possible
ways of exploiting the fact that neural nets have many flexible layers
and are good at high-level abstractions, while still getting a model
to do something specific.
But one could imagine something more interesting -- something that
is not obviously just an instance of the previous thing but performs
just as well or better on its own task, without being particularly
well-trained as a model on other tasks.
And there are examples in the literature. Stacked Auto-Encoders
try to learn to compress the image, and a lot of other things get done by stacking them. (I think this has to do with the way the encoder-decoder architecture learns to "look for patterns in a sequence of low-level features -- for example, to
learn to predict whether a particular character is a vowel if only
its left-to-right and top-to-bottom neighbors are known," even though
these two things might seem totally unrelated.) But the stacked-autoencoder
models aren't particularly good at many other things like, say, image
recognition.
So are there simple models that are only good on their task?
That's the question.
----
It's worth noting what this actually is. There are many problems we could
try to solve with a simple neural net. The usual way I've seen this
type of thing modeled is as a function that is both very simple, but
highly nonlinear.
There are many highly nonlinear functions out there -- nonlinear
relationships among variables in physical systems, in financial data,
in the outputs of GAN-like generators, etc.
But when you're "simple," what are you doing complex?
There are many functions (with complex-looking output) that are not
simple. Complexity can come from many places, but you could
potentially say that anything with a sufficiently large number of
nonlinear inputs is not simple.
It is not obvious what counts as "large" and "sufficiently." This is what we don't know, and it is what we're trying to find out.
----
(I should add: the point of all this is not to argue for one way of
encoding a model, in some sort of objective "best" sense. It's to say
that, even among all the different ways of encoding a model, some are better, and some have different trade-offs -- e.g.
easier to fit but harder to interpret, more expressive, etc.)
----
If it helps, here are two things I've thought about, that seem to me
to give you "the same kind of intuition" about nonlinear models I was
looking for:
1. If you use something like ResNet (instead of a GAN), and then add
layers like "a stack of two ResNets" on top of each other, you suddenly
get something that does a lot of the things you were able to do with a
single ResNet.
It looks much simpler than a single ResNet, and still does some of
the things a single ResNet does very well. But the new model still has
the right relationship between its inputs and its outputs. It's still a nonlinear function!
So maybe you should care about the nonlinear relationship, rather than
about how much of the mapping from inputs to outputs the neural net
does, which is how you would usually think about "what's special about
GANs."
2. I think you can think of any model with a large number of
nonlinear inputs as a sequence of "low-level" nonlinear steps, where
the output of the nonlinear step at one scale of "resolution" is fed as
its input to the nonlinear step at the next finer "resolution."
As an example, consider a video sequence consisting of small "video
frames" (pixelated images), each corresponding to a slightly different
camera angle.
Now you can construct an even finer-scale, more "detailed" frame by
repeating the previous frame (or something like it, maybe you can't do
that), but instead of looking at the frame in isolation, you also feed
some "context" (some other frames or images) into the neural net
alongside each frame.
When you get to the "highest" or "final" scale, and then feed it into
the net, you basically get a list of "video frames" "from different
angles" -- so in effect, you've constructed the neural net on a more
detailed level.
Or you could think of it the other way around, by thinking about the
higher scale as itself a sequence of lower scales.
The point of this example isn't to describe a model or
to explain neural nets. The point is to make you imagine what it means for something to have nonlinearities inside
it, even though they're nonlinearities between its inputs and its
outputs -- that is, it means something has "deeper" layers than
usual, even if those layers are (roughly speaking) low-level.
Maybe this gives you some intuition about what's actually
going on in those high-level layers and what it's doing, because, like
we said, they are acting as layers, or scales.
We don't know how to understand the layers that make our high-level
nonlinear mappings, and that's the real problem of interest here, isn't it.

so y'know the whole saying that's like, "if your nonhuman anthro species can easily be replaced with humans without affecting the story, then you didn't make a good species" ?
i don't fully agree with it, since i think having nonhuman/humanoid characters can help with visual storytelling and character design (and i mean, who doesn't love a good cat girl?) but it's also important to consider how this species would live their daily life different from humans.
i struggle with the latter. sometimes i feel that the crustaceans are too similar to humans for them to actually be interesting and different enough from humans, besides appearance. i've been considering a couple details to help the species become a bit more unique, feel free to share your thoughts on these ideas, whether good or bad!
1: crustaceans shed their "skin" (which is more like a thin shell) every few months or so. they aren't exactly like real-life crustaceans, which have an exoskeleton. they have an endoskeleton similar to humans and are protected by an outer layer of thin shell, similar to a reptile's scales. how often the shell sheds can vary from person to person, but it'd generally be once every three months. shedding in some cultures is seen as embarrassing or a strictly private matter, while others embrace it and treat it as a sort of mini-birthday. a crustacean's shell freshly after shedding may be a bit soft and pale, but hardens just a few days later and regains its usual color. the shell may become dull and dry just a few days before shedding. the shell itself is about as tough as a thin sheet of plastic and is designed to shield and absorb blunt impacts, but can crack if pierced by something sharp. a cracked shell can be very painful and takes weeks to heal, but it usually recovers perfectly fine after the next shed.
2: crustaceans are able to sense vibrations in the air with their antennae. this is the idea i'm most sure of, as it makes the most sense and gives the antennae an actual purpose outside of looks. you might think they'd replace the crustaceans' vision, since the innerworld seems like it'd be too dark to see (its a cave system, after all) but by the time the crustaceans were banished to the innerworld, they already had advanced enough to know how to make reliable light sources which, within a few years of living there, were installed and generously dispersed throughout the caves. for this reason, their eyes never evolved, like most cave animals would. but back to the antennae, it'd make sense for them to be able to sense vibrations and/or smells in the air that warn of stalking monsters, unfamiliar crustaceans, etc.
3: it would also make sense for them to be able to swim, maybe not as well or as long as actual shrimp, but definitely better than humans.
4: maybe i should clarify here that crustaceans reproduce the same as humans. just so i don't get any questions about eggs. yeah

Projection
Everything projectile cause in stats in statistics That could b labeled as false
If my sugar daddy said u are using me etc. he would be 100% correct cause if we check stats along with situation it adds up completely
When a man my age starts playing that game
Subconsciously but a game
I just have to sit and ponder
Cause only thing they used was time and maybe they had to feel pathetic for loving but love is quite pathetic cause it DOESNT exist among relationships with somebody who you are not kin too,
Cheat steal use and the good times make up for all the bullshit thats a relationship
Most relationships pple lie and cry alot
Alot of fights too alot of disagreements all cause some person or both are lonely
Rather have a bunch of bullshit cause maybe this gets better or good eventually
The only love that truly exists between mothers and grandmothers thats so unconditional they dnt wanna argue n fight just cause maybe at the end of the road there will b a worthy exchange for pain
They love n argue cause they want the best for you there is no reward in the love they show they show it cause dammit they love you and ive always shown that kind of love
Well i thought i have
Probably didnt but i tried
Cause if its not the correct puzzle piece or information that connects to the right button or switch bitch u otw out
And soon this will be laughing material for most, i think what alotta people dont realize is my life has been laughing matieral at all stages not just this one so

Ive had niggas say they gone come kill me
Gun to my face
Stomps on my head
Ive been raped multiple times from a young age
My mom dgaf bout me i mean what more could u possibly do to me for me to feel slighted im chronically slighted
Paper cut is how most shit feel to me now
There’s nothing fun in being afraid of nothing, always said u tryna to b hard
Idk what way 2 be soft with a endearment cycle like mine. Everything comes out harsh cause how do u say things with a softness ?
How do u live softly? If u not using softness as a cover as a straight up lie cause u know deep down its not pink jeeps and white fur carpets face masks and femininity is a JOKE!
I got extremely tired of covering up who i was cause it got to be a second job
If not being me was the first one
If i gotta b scapegoat for being authentic this merely a example
Dont be honest, every girl has told me that and have been 1000% correct

5 Reasons Why an Orthopaedic Mattress is Good For Everyone
Your quality of sleep often depends on the quality of the mattress you pick. If you wish to sleep uninterruptedly without compromising your long-term health, the best solution would be to settle for an orthopedic mattress. Here are a few benefits of using the best orthopedic mattress in India.
1.    Provides Spine Alignment
To begin with, every orthopedic mattress offers the user the utmost spinal cord alignment which everyone needs. Especially if you are suffering from back pains, joint pains, and more such issues, ortho mattresses can be a good relief.
While using an ortho mattress, regardless of the sleeping position, the mattress supports the entire spinal cord adequately. However, experts recommend side sleeping for people with pain and ache problems in addition to ortho mattresses for better relief from aches. Ortho mattress come in the latest technology compressed roll packing enabling you to carry easily without anyone’s help.once package is opened the mattress regains its original size and shape in a few hours.
2.    Comfortable And Better Sleep
When your body feels comfortable, you sleep better. Disturbed sleep can be a source of several additional health hazards. Ortho mattresses feature a memory foam layer and several other layers facilitating undisturbed sleep.
The zero partner disturbances feature of this mattress also makes sure that you do not wake up in the middle of the night experiencing an impact caused by your partner’s movement on the other side of the bed. Check the collection of reputed mattress brands to pick the best orthopedic mattress.
3.    Prevents Pressure Points
Another advantage of using an ortho mattress remains reduced pressure points. When a person sleeps on a mattress for several hours, the body experiences differing pressure exertion points based on the weight of the body parts. For example, the area around the hip generally experiences more pressure than the legs.
But, ortho mattresses offer the perfect balance of firmness and softness so that you feel comfortable and do not suffer from an uneven distribution of body weight. No matter how you sleep, this variety of mattresses will always provide you with adequate cushioning.
4.    Reduce Allergies
Orthopedic mattresses also come with a top cover of breathable fabric. When you sleep on the mattress for a very long time, the contact between the top layer and your skin might become a source of sweating, irritation, itching, etc.
For people with sensitive skin, this can be a critical issue. The breathable fabric layer of ortho mattresses allows the skin of the user to breathe adequately and regularly. Therefore, allergies, 0itchings, and other problems stay far away. Even those who suffer from asthma will find this variety of mattresses useful and comfortable.
5.    Keeps Your Body Cooler
The top layer of the breathable fabric also keeps the body cooler. Especially during the summer months, when sweating remains one of the primary problems of disturbed sleep and low-energy days, ortho mattresses can help. When your skin can breathe well, you perspire less. Therefore, your body feels cooler and more comfortable.

React.JS: A Bliss or Woe for Developers?
Tumblr media
What is React.JS?
React.JS is a multi-purpose, open-source JavaScript framework and library used for front-end development focusing on building interactive user interfaces (UI) and web applications faster and better. One can develop their applications by creating reusable components. These components are individual pieces of a final interface, which can be assembled to form the application’s entire user interface.
The primary role of react is to handle the view layer of the application by providing efficient execution just like the V in a model view controller (MVC). Rather than handling the whole user interface as one unit, React.JS allows developers to separate these complex UIs into individual reusable components which form the building blocks of the whole UI which helps the ReactJS framework to combine the speed and efficiency of JavaScript with a more efficient method of manipulating the DOM to render web pages faster and create highly dynamic and responsive web applications.
Origin of ReactJS
“The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML as opposed to native," said Mark Zuckerberg. He promised Facebook would soon deliver a better mobile experience.
Later, In 2011 ReactJS was created by one of the Software Engineers on Facebook named Jordan Walke and was utilized by the company for its news section. In 2012, One of the subsidiaries of Facebook, Instagram also started using it. Looking into the problem solved by React.JS Facebook made it open-sourced in the year 2013. In the beginning, developers didn’t support it because it used Markup and JavaScript in a single file. But as more people experimented with it, they started embracing the component-centric approach for separating concerns.
In 2014, many large companies across the globe started using React.JS in their production environments.
Features of React.JS
1.  JSX:  JSX is an abbreviation for JavaScript XML. It is an extension of JavaScript Syntax. It combines HTML syntax with JavaScript directly to make it easier for developers to interact with the browser. It is type-safe, and most of the errors can be found at compilation time. It is easy to create a template using JSX in React.
2. Virtual DOM: It is a DOM object representation that helps in creating a virtual copy of the original DOM object by web browsers for simplifying the process of keeping track of updates in real time. React maintains two virtual DOMs in which the first one contains the updated virtual DOM and the other is a pre-updated version of the updated virtual DOM. When comparing the current virtual DOM with the previous one is known as 'defying'. Once React knows what has changed, it updates the objects in the actual DOM.
3. Performance: As we discussed earlier, react uses virtual DOM and updates only the modified parts which make the DOM run faster. DOM executes in memory so we can create separate components which helps in the efficiency of the DOM.
4. One-way Data Binding: One-way data binding, as the name itself suggests that it is a one-direction flow. The data in react flows only in one direction which means the data is transferred from top to bottom i.e., from parent components to child components. The properties in the child component cannot return the data to its parent component but it can have communication with the parent components to modify the states according to the provided inputs. It helps in keeping everything modular and fast.
5. Extension: React has many extensions which can be used to create full-fledged UI applications. It supports mobile Application Development and helps in providing server-side rendering. React is extended with Flux, Redux, React Native, etc. which helps to create a good-looking User Interface.
6. Simplicity: React.JS is component-based which helps in making the code reusable. It uses JSX which is a combination of HTML and JavaScript. This makes code easy to understand for everyone.
React supports more features like routing, debugging, API interaction, and state management. It is the best choice when it comes to rendering data.
Benefits of ReactJS for Front-end Development
1. Performance: React JS prioritizes high performance as its core design principle. The framework offers a dual DOM programming model and server-side rendering, enabling the seamless execution of complex applications with remarkable speed and efficiency.
2. Reusable Components: One of the main benefits of using ReactJS is its potential to reuse components. This time-saving feature allows developers to focus their efforts on other aspects of the application's development. Additionally, ReactJS ensures that changes made to a specific component have no adverse effects on other parts of the application, providing a robust and isolated development environment.
 3. Speed: By enabling the utilization of specific application parts on both the client and server sides, ReactJS significantly enhances the speed of the development process. This means that different developers can work on distinct components independently, without introducing conflicts or interfering with the overall application logic, resulting in efficient development and streamlined collaboration.
4. Flexibility: Compared to other frontend frameworks, the React code is easier to maintain and is flexible due to its modular structure. This flexibility, in turn, saves a huge amount of time and cost for businesses. Deploying React is fairly easy to accomplish if you have some basic knowledge of JavaScript. An expert JavaScript developer can easily learn all ins and outs of the React framework in a matter of a day or two.
This framework offers various benefits to both developers as well as business owners. It's no surprise that this framework gained popularity quickly and is still on the rise.
Why is React so popular among the Developer Community?
1.   Easy to Grasp: One of the main reasons for the wide adoption of React.JS is that it’s easy to grasp the fundamentals of React, especially if you already are a pro at JavaScript. You can install React and be up and running in a few hours, getting straight up to building web applications. The documentation is clear and there is a lot of it. Furthermore, the short learning curve means less downtime learning—allowing you to operate sooner.
2.   Easy to Scale: React is built to be extremely versatile to easily integrate with other third-party libraries and frameworks in your tech stack. React apps happily scale to hundreds or even thousands of components. It doesn’t create any unnecessary barriers for developers to build complex applications.
3.   Testing & Functionality: With ReactJS, developers can utilize ecmascript6 modules to define dependencies and make use of tools like Babel and React. di. These modules are easy to test and can be considered as the current state's functionality. They can be observed for changes in triggered functions, outputs, events, and more. It's important to test them before using them, and ReactJS simplifies the testing process, making it much easier to ensure the desired functionality.

Gardening is a hobby that many people enjoy, but it can also be challenging and confusing at times. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned gardener, you might have some questions about how to grow and care for your plants, flowers, and vegetables.
Ultimate Guide to Gardening
In this article, we will answer some of the most frequently asked questions about gardening, such as what are the different types of gardens, when to plant, how to make the soil fertile, how to prune, guide to gardening and more. By reading this article, you will learn some useful tips and tricks to make your gardening experience more enjoyable and successful.
Tumblr media
What are the different types of gardens?A garden is a small place attached to the residence where people grow plants. However, when people are passionate about growing plants and have less space around them, they tend to create gardens at places like rooftops, atriums, balconies, window boxes, patios, and vivariums. Gardening is not restricted to these small residential areas; it can also be done in public places like parks, botanical gardens, tourist places, hotels, etc. What month should I start planting in my garden?Vegetable and annual flower plant seeds should be planted 6 months before the winter season, but there are some vegetables and flowers that can tolerate winter. So, the planting depends greatly on what one is planning to grow in their garden. How long does it take for seeds to germinate in the soil? When sprouting with 2 to 3 mm of root, soaked seeds should be planted in the soil at a depth of 0.5 to 1 cm with the root facing downwards. Doing so will help seeds germinate within 3 to 5 days of sowing. How can one make the soil more fertile? Two basic things which indicate fertile soil are organic matter and mineral availability. It is important to know that the soil should not be tilled very often. Otherwise, it would disturb the soil structure. Add organic materials to the soil. Add wood ash to the soil. How deep should a raised vegetable garden be?A raised garden bed is a restricted space for growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables, so in order to provide enough space and adequate soil for root development, the depth of the raised bed is maintained properly. The minimum depth of the soil bed should be around 6 to 8 inches for vegetables like turnips, cucumbers, broccoli, beet, lettuce, etc., but vegetables like cabbage need a depth of 10 inches. Vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, peppers, etc., need a depth of 12 inches to survive. How does one prepare a garden bed for planting?Preparing the bed is almost similar to soil preparation and is important because the roots of the plants thrive in this area. Three types of garden areas could be possible: the new bed, the empty bed, and the existing garden bed. The soil in the area should be turned over to a depth of 12 inches. Compost should be added to it such that it forms 2-3 inches of bed-like structure. Mulch the bed with grass clippings (3-4 inch layers). Add more compost to the garden to preserve moisture. How deep do you dig a hole for a plant? The depth of the hole for planting depends on the type of plant and its size. Small plants of about 3 inches need a planting depth of 6 to 12 inches; when slightly greater than 3-inch plants need a depth twice the diameter of the existing pot size so as to have plenty of room for roots. How can one break down clay soil?Clay soil is categorized as a heavy soil type and should be loosened to facilitate proper plant growth. Naturally obtained sand has silt and little organic matter, which is considered better for plants. It is not the pure form of sand. Rather, it is called sandy loam or loamy sand, depending on the sand and silt in it. Sandy soil needs to be amended according to the plant type. Acidic soil is added with lime to balance the pH, and alkaline sandy soil is added with sulfur to make it neutral. How long does it take for a garden to grow? This factor depends on the type of plants one is growing in the garden. Normally, seeds germinate within one or two weeks time and then, depending on the maintenance of the garden, one can expect to see a garden ready in about 60 to 90 days after planting. What are the best plants for shade? Some plants that grow indoors in less space are Aloe Vera, basil, spider plant, snake plant, weeping plant, Areca palm, English ivy, lady slipper orchid etc. apart from these vegetables and fruit plants also grow in the shade like cabbage, carrots, lettuce, herbs, blackberries, pears, etc.How often should I water my plants? The general watering count is one to two inches of water every week, but it is important to know that sandy soil holds less water than clay soil and will hence dry early. The best time to water the plants is in the morning or late afternoon so as to avoid evaporation and fungal infections. 2 inches deep watering once a week is preferable, and shallow watering frequently should be avoided. What is the correct way to prune the plants in the garden? To keep the houseplants properly aerated, fresh and healthy, it is advisable to prune or remove the dead leaves, limbs, and flowers from the plants. Sometimes even the stem or branches are cut to encourage fresh growth and foliage. Pruning should be done after the growing season has started. Cut the diseased or dead part at an angle of 45°. Trim the dead flowers off the plant to encourage new bloom. The longest branches on the main stem should be cut almost to one-third. Never cut the nodules of the plant having new buds. What makes a garden organic?Growing plants the natural way, i.e., without the use of chemicals or synthetic fertilizers, is the main idea of an organic garden. When the ecosystem in which the plants sustain and get nourished is controlled by soil microbes and beneficial insects rather than artificial agents, then it becomes an organic garden. What is vertical gardening, and why is it important?A method of gardening in which plants are encouraged to grow upward in the vertical space with the help of a frame or a wall. This method utilizes various resources and techniques to grow plants in a particular fashion. The frame of plants can be designed anywhere around the house without any problem. Vertical gardens are a pleasant sight to look at, very fast to create and easy to tend, and they lower the temperature of the surroundings. How can one test the garden soil? The soil in the backyard or garden area can be tested easily without a pH kit. Take one cup of soil from different parts of the garden and put 2 spoonfuls into a separate container, and then add half a cup of vinegar to the soil. If the soil fizzes, then it is assumed that the soil has a pH range of 7-8 (alkaline). Now if the soil doesn’t fizz, add water and 2 spoons of soil and make it muddy; add half a cup of baking soda to the muddy mixture to check for fizzes. If fizzes are observed, the soil is acidic and must have a pH of 5-6.What indoor plants are the easiest to grow?If you're a beginner or someone who prefers low-maintenance plants, you might want to consider philodendron, pothos, rubber plants, mother-in-law's tongue, dracaena, spider plants, cast iron plants, or umbrella plants. These plants are known for their hardiness and ease of care. What does high and low light mean for indoor plants?High-light plants require direct or strong sunlight for most of the day. Medium-light plants should stay out of direct sunlight but still should be in a bright room. Low-light plants should be away from the window. Understanding the light requirements of your plants is crucial for their survival and growth. What about grow lights for indoor plants? You can grow almost any plant, including blooming plants, with a grow light equipped with a special light bulb for plants. Grow lights can be a great solution for indoor gardening, especially in spaces with limited natural light. What's the best potting mix for houseplants?Using a mix that drains well is best since the number one problem with indoor plants is overwatering. A recommended mix is one that holds enough water to keep the plants happy but also is very porous, so there is good air circulation around the roots. For cactus and succulents, a specialized cactus soil is recommended. How do I know if my plant needs repotting? You can slide the plant out of the pot and look at the roots. If the roots are circling outside the root ball and it looks like there are more roots than soil, it is probably time to repot. It's recommended to pot in one size larger pot when you report. What is the best vase for my flowers? Or how do I choose a vase?Choose a vase that’s half the height of the flowers. If the bouquet is bottom-heavy, use a narrower vase; use a wider one if the top is overpowering. Make sure that your vase is clean before use. Let the vase dry naturally because using a towel or some other material can introduce bacteria that may cause your flowers to die off faster. How much water do I add to a vase?Fill the vase two-thirds with water – use lukewarm water, as flowers can drink this more quickly. Avoid using hot or cold water for delicate flowers that can come as a shock. Better still, allow the filled vase to sit for a while and adjust to room temperature. This will also allow any air bubbles to escape.Should I use flower food in the vase?Flower food contains 2 main ingredients, sugar and bleach. Sugar will feed the flowers, and bleach will help prevent the growth of algae and bacteria. Algae has the potential to clog the stems, making it more difficult for the flower stems to absorb water. Therefore, the addition of flower food is a must.Should I trim my flower stems?Flower stems will immediately start to dry out soon after they have been picked from the soil. When you receive your flowers, they will be 100% fresh and hydrated, but you should still cut about 2-3cm from the bottom of the stems at an angle. This increases their water intake because it stops the stems from resting against the bottom of the vase and gives them a better surface area to absorb.Should I remove any leaves or other foliage that sits below the waterline?Yes, removing any leaf or other foliage that sits below the waterline is essential. This helps to keep the water clean and free from any potential sources of bacteria or algae, which can shorten the lifespan of your flowers.
