I just don't know how he expected anyone (i.e. me) to be normal about it afterwards #once you've introduced BATB; it ceases to be a fun and casual reference and just makes the literature major girlies go feral #i thought this was gonna be a quick and easy little project but it wasn't #the parallels are all there but they're in slightly different order in EoA than the original and the pacing for each reference is differen #so i had to determine which ones I needed to skip frames for and which ones to use all the frames #and then try to figure out the speed from there #the coronation day scenes were very hard to color because the grey skies and muted filter kind of whitewash the characters #like you don't even understand i added so MUCH vibrance and saturation to the 4th and 5th gifs but elena's skin still is just gray #and the coloring is still just a very very mixed bag #also i've realized that while I don't think it was an intentional reference in the same way BATB was #anna's sacrifice and resurrection from frozen is perhaps just as --if not more-- a clear parallel to the coronation day scene than BATB #so maybe I will do that one someday too? #once i psych myself up again to try coloring coronation day again #which i imagine will be awhile #these do not look like the same scene and pretty much the same scene at all even if i tried to use the same psd when i could #and edit them to make the coloring as close as i could

ugh yes my queen

favorite thing about them: how REAL she is! she honestly feels so real and so relatable. i love how she makes mistakes and has honest growth; it really makes her stand out to other disney princesses because she feels like an actual teenager learning. you can see her mature and learn over the seasons and it's so lovely to see her grow.

least favorite thing about them: probably how impulsive she is. i do agree w isabel in the gecko's tale when she said elena was always in a rush because, well, it's true. she hardly stops to take a breath, and reacts without thinking. but it's okay bc we love her anyways :D

unpopular opinion: i wish she dealt w the esteban thing differently, however, i don't blame her for how she reacted. if i found out my cousin was indirectly the reason why i lost my parents, had been traumitized for life, and my kingdom's suffering for 40+ years? i would have been pissed too. so, i don't blame her for being SO upset, but i do wish that she had thought more from esteban's pov and tried to understand where he was coming from. she was so keen on her anger and hurt that she basically disregarded any reasoning for what he did. obviously what he did was awful, but i do wish that she tried harder to see why he did what he did.

What she says: I'm fine.

What she means: I just don't understand how the showrunners of EoA expected me, an English major, to cope with their explicitly and visually coding Elena and Esteban as narrative foils and two sides of the same coin throughout S3. And they weren't even remotely subtle about intertwining their characters, destinies, and relationship with each other.

They were just like "what if we gave Esteban and Elena the exact same unique, transformative experience (i.e. falling in the crystal well and absorbing its magic) but ONLY them.? Then maybe, we explicitly seal up Takaina so that no one else can ever have that same experience again?"

And then if that wasn't blatant enough, they each get magical powers that are specifically tailored to their most notable character flaws (Esteban's running away from his responsibilities vs. Elena's emotional intensity and volatility). And if that still was a little too subtle, they also get matching sparkly outfits as souvenirs from their trip down the magic well. So that in every scene they have together (with the exception of the Coronation scene) from then on visually links the two of them together.

Like all of that is just barely scratching the surface of the thematic ramifications of this. Because at the end of the day, Esteban and Elena each metaphorically (if accidentally) gave the other their corresponding powers.

Esteban canonically gets his teleportation because Elena's new anger powers literally lift him up and throw him down the crystal well.

Similarly, Esteban is (albeit much more indirectly) somewhat responsible for Elena's magic as well. It's somewhat implied that the reason Elena is able to use the Scepter of Light in the first place (when presumably her parents and ancestors could not) is because of the Maruvian magic that she absorbed from her years in the Amulet. Crucially, a very real part of the reason that she was even in said amulet in the first place is due to Esteban's decision to smuggle Shuriki into Avalor. His (admittedly terrible) choice led to Elena's ability to use her greatest weapon and that very weapon (via spying on Ash with "Farsight") is what eventually leads Elena to Takaina where she gets her additional emotion powers.

That's canon, baby. Esteban's actions in the past indirectly give Elena her magic. Elena's direct (if accidental) actions in the present give Esteban his.

All of this alone is already more than enough to make me absolutely feral, but they just have to up the ante even more in the series finale. Esteban uses his teleportation powers to take the magical bullet for Elena; Elena uses her own emotion magic to bring him back to life after his sacrifice. They use their powers--the same powers that they technically gave to each other in the first place--to save each other.

And then, if all that isn't enough, they proceed to use each other's powers together in order to defeat the enemy. First, Esteban is able to break Cahu's hourglass by using Elena's scepter, and then the two of them are able to send Cahu back to the Spirit World through the combined power of the scepter and staff. They've converged into one tight, solid, united force for Good that is powerful beyond imagining.

And I am deeply insane about all of it.

*Nervous Laughter.* Ummm...I really really like the scene that visually and thematically referenced a key moment from Beauty and the Beast (1991). And that's all I'm gonna say on that. If you know, you know.

13. Favorite quote from the series?

"We may not be able to change the past, but if we change ourselves, we have the power to change the future."

^Not really sure if this actually my favorite quote or just the one that is hitting hardest for me now. Because I just watched THAT scene from "Coronation Day" multiple times in a row and they're hitting me with all the feels right now.

Bonus: What is your favorite Elena and Esteban moment together?

Esteban's heroic sacrifice and Elena's restoring him to life with the power of Forgiveness™. The music, the writing, the voice acting, the animation (especially the animation tbh)--just everything about that sequence is *chef's kiss.*

The fact that Esteban's just chilling on the throne, but can somehow sense Elena's thwarted "blaze" spell (crystal well psychic link?) and teleports to the balcony to investigate. The fear on his face turning toward resolve just before he slams his staff to the ground to teleport in front of the grain of sand. The apology he just barely gets out before he runs out of time. The fact that the last thing he does before turning to stone is to reach out to her.

The way it takes her a moment to realize what's happening and her face cycles between confusion, horror, and finally sorrow. The way she cradles his stone face in her hands as a single tear falls slowly down her face. The quiet "I forgive you" accompanied by her curling into him and trying as best she can to embrace him.

The silver-white sparkles gradually surrounding her, transforming her dress (unrelated but white is also a very very pretty color on her in general and even prettier in this context given both the lighting and the emotional resonance). And her emotion magic spreads out and starts disintegrating the stone tablet. The way her eyes widen when she realizes that he's not gone; that her magic has saved him--just as his magic saved her.

The fact that when he emerges from his stone prison, he stumbles and ends up on his knees -just as he's fallen countless times (metaphorically and sometimes literally) over the past 45 years. Only this time she is there with hands reaching out to help him to his feet.

"Forgiveness, it's more powerful than anything I've ever felt."

Elena's emotion magic rippling out and restoring not just Esteban but everyone who has been impacted by the Shades' magic. The gray skies suddenly being replaced by bright sunlight.

Esteban grabbing Elena's scepter and being ready to throw it to her, only to have it start glowing in his hand. Elena giving him permission to use it. Esteban casting "blaze"--the first spell that Elena cast with it and the very spell she used to defeat Shuriki once and for all--to shatter Cahu's hourglass and metaphorically free himself from the Time that had trapped him for over four decades.

Elena reaching for Esteban's staff--ready to borrow his power as he had just borrowed hers in order to drag Cahu to the Spirit World. Him cautioning her not to use the scepter, because he knows its limits. The two of them agreeing to try using their powers together.

Elena literally saying "Your time is up," because even at a moment this important, she can't resist making a pun. The matching little chaotic gremlin faces just before Elena and Esteban use the staff + scepter combo and disappear off the Spirit World with Cahu.

(It was at this moment that Cahu knew she was truly, irrevocably fucked.)

Elena's test having been Esteban all all along. Esteban promising to spend the rest of his life making up for what he has done. Esteban finally handing the scepter back to Elena, only to have her jump on him and wrap her arms around him. The HUG.

Esteban finally standing back where he belongs with his family and their friends. Isa is right in front of him and we see Francisco put a hand around his grandson's shoulder as the scene fades to black.

favourite canon pairing: ymmv on how canon it is, but considering it was pretty strongly teased in the series finale, Julio/Doña Paloma. I do find Carla/Mateo pretty cute as well.

worst pairing ever: I wouldn't say any of the pairings for the show are bad. It's just a lot of them don't particularly interest me. I could say Elena/Mateo, because personally I find it overrrated and I'm already gonna talk about it later. But I am going to go with Esteban/Doña Paloma.

I did actually kind of ship it the first time I watched the show...right up until the episode where their AU selves got married. And even though the whole point of "to Queen or Not to Queen" is that everything is absurd and everyone is wildly out-of-character (especially the two of them), they just seemed so miserable together and I couldn't unsee it. I also find it kind of annoying that Paloma is treated as sort of the default "acceptable" Esteban shipping option for people who don't want to pair him with OCs. And just...it's fine and I understand why many people would feel uncomfortable shipping him with certain characters (even if I don't)...but like...Victor is also right there. And honestly, I'm able to get a lot of the same vibes that I initially liked about esteoma out of estevictor, esteban/naomi, gaberico, and Julio/ Paloma---plus just I find those dynamics are more interesting in general.

guilty pleasure pairing: It used to be estebalena, but now, I have much less shame over it. It helps that I really only see it happening in S3 or later and that I hc that Elena would be the much more dominant/instigating partner in the relationship. I mean I guess Shuriki/Esteban is the obvious answer. But it is worth noting that I don't like it when it's genuine/mutual/romantic. I only like esteriki in the noncon/dubcon "Shuriki abusing her power" sense. So my guilty pleasure ship is less Shuriki/Esteban and more "Esteban/severe Shuriki-related trauma that leads to extreme woobification." I want him sad and pretty and haunted by the Dark Times™ so that he can have allll the angst, whump and hurt/comfort.

a pairing you want to see more: Literally every ship that isn't just some permutation of the Four Amigos. There are so many great characters in this ship that can be paired in so many interesting ways, but they rarely get acknowledged. I think I am particularly baffled by the lack of m/m in this fandom, since it's like the complete opposite of every other fandom ever. There's a bit of Mateo/Gabe, but honestly, it's positively dwarfed by other pairings for the amigos. (Also I don't care about Mateo, lol). There's also a criminally small bit of Gabe/Rico, but there could be so much more.

But honestly, the ship that I am genuinely baffled isn't more popular and really really want to see more of is Victor/Esteban. Like it just seems like a no-brainer to me. It has so many tropes that people normally go feral over. Childhood friends to lovers? Enemies to Lovers? Foe yay? Mutual redemption arcs? There isn't even an age difference and Victor's marriage is all-but-over. So, what is stopping people? I've seen at most a handful of ambiguously romantic ship art and not a single fic. Where is it? Where is the estevictor? Give me the estevictor!

that pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no” : Elena/Mateo. I mean I get why it's so popular given the popularity and attractiveness of both characters. But personally, I just don't find them interesting. I feel they both have better chemistry and interesting potential with other characters than they do with each other. And its popularity within the fandom certainly doesn't help, as my little contrarian hipster brain turns its nose about 90% of fandom juggernaut pairings. Plus, I just don't care enough about Mateo to care about a ship with him. He's casually cute with Carla and I can see him with Gabe as well. But otherwise, nope. Don't like him enough to care who he's shipped with.

favorite non-romantic pair: There are a bunch of dynamics that I do ship sometimes (or more than sometimes) but I also love platonically. (Esteban & Elena, Elena & Naomi, Esteban & Naomi, Naomi & Gabe, Elena & Gabe, Elena & Valentina, Elena & Marisa, Chloe & Maliga, Cacahuate & Bobo, various permutations of "Team Isa"). But in terms of pairings that I only view platonically, either Victor & Carla or Isabel & Elena.

What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*: sooo many if i'm being honest. which i am! anyways i am going to be salty so here's my truthful response >:D -> gabela, gababel, esteomi, esturiki, estebalena, carzel, etc. some of them are just outright wrong, and others i don't get at all bc they don't seem compatible/have never met. idk they just rub me the wrong way hehhe

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*: yeah 😆 the fandom ruined gabe and isabel's friendship for me, as well as naomi and esteban's friendship. i loved the respective dynamics, but now when i see those scenes, i just cringe.
