"REPAIRS TO GEORGE WILL MAKE GOOD JOB," Victoria Daily Times. December 23, 1913 Page 6. --- Specifications for Work Now Being Drawn Up; Coast Free From Accidents ---- Repairs to the hull of the G. T. P. steamer Prince George, now in dry- dock at Esquimalt, will comprise a fairly good job for one of the local shipyards. Specifications for the work which the underwriters will carry out on the injured steamer are now being drawn up by Capt. W. H. Logan. Tenders for the work will be invited Immediately after Christmas and the contract will be awarded by the beginning of next week.
The damage is not all confined to the formed section of the ship. She has injured herself amidships considerably, and some new plates will no doubt be required. The work of repairing the Prince George will take probably three weeks.
Very Little Repairing. Capt. Logan, the salvage expert, said this morning that there is very little repair work going on at the present time. Besides the Prince George, there is one job in Vancouver and another in Seattle, and this comprises the entire amount of repairing being done on the coast. This is a phenomenal state of affairs for this season of the year.
Around Christmas there are usually a number of vessels in port having their hulls repaired, following strandings or terrific battles with wind and wave. Few coasting boats have come to grief this year, and the ocean liners have been very fortunate in evading most of the heavy storms which have so far swept the Pacific. Not one bad accident has been brought to the notice of shipping and seafaring men so far, and they are hoping that the masters will be able to continue to keep their ships off the rocky shores.

"CAPTURE VAN HORST AFTER LONG CHASE," The Province (Vancouver). November 27, 1913. Page 15. --- He and Lester May Have Caused Disappearance of Japanese. ---- After being closely pursued for over a month, G. Van Horst, wanted in connection with the disappearance of Owago, a Japanese, and for alleged robberies in Vancouver, was captured yesterday afternoon in the woods not far from the Canadian border line, in the State of Washington. He surrendered without a struggle, and is now held in jail awaiting extradition proceedings. A companion, Lester is in the city jail here. He will appear in court on Friday on a charge of having stolen property in his possession.
The exact manner in which Van Horst was captured was not contained in the notification of the capture sent by Provincial Detective James Green, who with City Detective Killeen, has been on the trail of the man for several weeks.
Van Horst may be charged with the murder of Owago, a Japanese fisherman, who was was employed, it is alleged, by him and Lester to take them to Victoria, after having, it is said, committed several robberies in this city. They started from Lulu Island with the Japanese, but on reaching the gulf islands he was missing. The launch in which they made the journey was set on fire near Salt Spring Island, and scuttled. The two occupants took the regular coasting boat to Victoria and escaped.
Examination of the launch, it is stated, resulted in the discovery of blood stains on the gunwale of the partially destroyed boat, and also marks that were said to indicate that several shots had been fired. At Victoria, according to the police, an attempt was made by the men to dispose of the proceeds of their alleged crimes in Vancouver. Suspicions were aroused as to the manner in which the two men were behaving themselves. Detective Sergeant McLeod of this city, who Van Horst had been heard to remark, was the only man that he was afraid of, went to Victoria to aid in the search for the men.
They were followed by Victoria detectives and Lester was arrested, but Van Horst escaped after drawing a revolver on the officers who almost captured him on Point Ellice bridge. He was thought to have taken refuge in the vicinity of Esquimalt, and for several days a diligent search was continued there for him. Every effort was made to preclude the possibility of the man's escape from Vancouver Island, Special watch was kept over the possible means of escape, but he slipped through the officers' fingers. It is thought that he escaped from Vancouver Island in a rowboat.
Detectives Killeen and Green were detailed to work on the case, and after tracing him from the time that he escaped from the Victoria authorities, they finally located him across the line. Detective Killeen was forced to return to Vancouver, so the reward offered by the Japanese society for his capture will go to the other officer.
Lester, since his Incarceration about a month ago has maintained a stony silence, but It is said that amongst his effects was found a watch that belonged to the Japanese. When Van Horst escaped from Victoria, it is said he had over $15.000 worth of diamonds in his possession.
