#Repost @thelacqueredllama with @make_repost ・・・ [Please SWIPE ↩ for a heartfelt gesture] 😇 My hubby let his nails grow out during his cancer treatments, so that I could paint them for you guys. This is our way of saying thank you to everyone that participated in the #manipawsawarenesscollab organized by @nailsoflizmo back in January, and to those that have sent encouraging messages, and lifted us in prayer. 🙏 Of course, I took it one step further and added nail art because April is #esophagealcancer awareness month, which means more to us now than ever. 💜 . For those that don't know, my husband was diagnosed with Stage III esophageal cancer on December 1st, 2018. He went through 28 daily radiation doses coupled with 5 weeks of chemo. On March 28th he had an esophagectomy. An esophagectomy is a surgical procedure in which they cut out the section of esophagus where the tumor was growing, then cut and staple your stomach into a new esophagus. They attach that newly created esophagus up into your chest, which means you now have a food tube, but no stomach. 🙁 . From the onset of his cancer to the day of his surgery, he'd lost 60 lbs. Cancer is so incredibly cruel. He completely lost his ability to swallow, and had to have a feeding tube. Once your ability to eat has been taken away do you realize how much of your life revolves around food. I felt guilty everytime I would eat, because he couldn't. His nutrition was coming from boxed supplements and a pump. He couldn't fellowship over a meal with his family anymore, and that really hurt. 😔 He has regained some of his ability to eat, but he can't eat much because he no longer has a food pouch. He is a shell of his former self (literally), but he never lost his spirit or sense of humor through it all. ❤ . A few weeks ago we received the pathology from his surgery, but we didn't get to hear the words - "you're cancer free". Out of the 20 lymph nodes they removed, 4 had active cancerous cells, which means it has spread beyond the esophagus. He will continue to see his oncologist every 3 months for the next 3 years. In June he'll have another PET scan to establish a baseline, and every 6 months thereafter he will hav https://www.instagram.com/p/B30Uj-kAq8m/?igshid=1s6twk4tpb3di

Hello, everyone! Knowing the risk factors is crucial in understanding how to reduce your chances of developing this disease. Let's look at the main risk factors associated with esophageal cancer:
Tobacco use: Smoking or using smokeless tobacco significantly increases the risk.
Excessive alcohol consumption: Heavy drinking is linked to a higher chance of developing esophageal cancer.
Obesity: Higher body weight is associated with an increased risk, particularly for adenocarcinoma.
Chronic acid reflux or GERD: Long-term gastroesophageal reflux disease can damage the esophagus, raising the risk.
Age: Most cases occur in people over 50 years old.
Gender: Men are more likely to develop esophageal cancer than women.
By being aware of these risk factors, we can take steps to reduce our risk and encourage early detection. If you have concerns about esophageal cancer, don't hesitate to reach out to our team at Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute for support and guidance.
