Storia Di Musica #296 - Eleven, Eleven, 1993

La storia di oggi è una storia di incroci. Sia emotivi sia scambi di persone e di formazioni. Jack Irons è un batterista che verso la fine degli anni '80 vuole mettere su una band. Lo fa con Alain Johannes, con cui fonda gli Anthym. si uniscono altri due amici, Hiller Slovak e Michael Peter Balzary. Cambiano subito nome in What Is This?. Iniziano a suonare alle feste e nei locali fino a quando un amico comune di Slovak e Balzary, Anthony Kiedis, non chiede a loro due di aiutarlo a trovare musicisti per la sua band. Finiscono per entrarci loro stessi, tanto che Balzary cambia nome in Flea e diventeranno il nucleo originario dei futuri Red Hot Chili Peppers. Tuttavia Slovak e Irons non abbandonarono Johannes e continueranno a suonare con lui, pubblicando un EP prima, Squeezed, un album poi, intitolato come la band What Is This?. Nell'impossibilità di continuare a suonare in due gruppi, la band si scioglie. Johannes però non si dà per vinto e ha lui l'incontro della sua vita. Ad un festival rock incontra una ragazza lettone che anglicizza il suo nome in Natasha Shneider, musicista e attrice. Si piacciono e formano un duo, Walk The Moon. Registrano alcuni brani, aiutati da Irons alla batteria e da un bassista, Chris Hutchinson, che però abbandona poco dopo. Irons nel 1988 lascia i RHCP e i tre, Johannes, Shneider e Irons fondano gli Eleven.

Natasha Shneider è una polistrumentista straordinaria, suona piano, organo e uno strumento particolare, il clavinet, che è un piano elettronico (amatissimo da Stevie Wonder) che lei suona con la mano sinistra in modo particolare come se fosse un basso, riuscendo così a sopperire alla mancanza nel trio di questo strumento. La band si sceglie un logo (un 11 disegnato come due linee, II) e firmato un contratto con una piccola etichetta pubblicano il primo disco, registrato e pubblicato nel 1991. Awake In A Dream è hard rock, certo, e si posiziona nella parte più hard rock della nascente scena alternative americana di quel tempo ,che farà nascere il grunge. Ma ha anche dei particolari davvero unici, tra cui il doppio ruolo di lead vocal tra Alain e Natasha. Tra i brani dell'esordio, Break The Spell fu parte della colonna sonora del film di fantascienza Freejack - In Fuga Dal Futuro, dove tra i protagonisti c'è Mick Jagger. La prova del nove è il loro secondo album, che si intitola Eleven.

I riferimenti sono i canonici (Led Zeppelin, l'hard rock degli anni '70, i nuovi suoni di Seattle) ma sono mischiati in modo del tutto singolare. Eleven esce nel 1993. La chitarra di Johannes passa con disinvoltura tra i riferimenti canonici ad un uso particolare e originale degli effetti, soprattutto del pedale fuzz per esemplari distorsioni armoniche. Il tutto si sposa perfettamente, e termine non fu più adatto dato che presto diventeranno marito e moglie, con la tecnica di Shneider, sfoggiando entrambi vocalità particolarissime per intensità e variazioni. Preceduto dal singolo Reach Out, dal suggestivo video musicale in bianco e nero e dominato da un assolo infinito e memorabile di Johannes, Eleven è un disco compatto e suonato alla grande, secondo me da riscoprire perché molto sottovalutato. A brani corposi e potenti come Crash Today, Tower, Heavy esempi di perfetto nuovo hard rock, a cui si aggiungono brani più particolari, come Hieroymus, dal prezioso intro di fisarmonica e di organo, che accompagna il meraviglioso canto di Natasha Shneider, o la litania di distorsioni di Let Down, o l'atmosfera dark di Ava Tar (scritto così in due parole). Il disco colpisce la critica, che ne parla egregiamente ma poco il pubblico. Mentre il gruppo sta registrando il terzo disco, Thunk, Irons se ne va a suonare con i Pearl Jam, e viene sostituito da Matt Cameron, dei Soundgarden, che il caso volle andrà a prendere le bacchette della band di Eddie Vedder qualche anno più tardi. Cameron si prestò ad aiutare gli Eleven poiché questi ultimi furono la band apripista di tour degli stessi Soundgarden e Pearl Jam e di decine di altre formazioni.

Johannes e Shneider divennero anche un ricercato team di produzione che lavorò su album come Euphoria Morning di Chris Cornell (sul quale scrissero, suonarono e andarono in tournée). ), Return of Saturn dei No Doubt , Revive degli inglesi Steadman e The Desert Sessions 7&8 and 9&10 con Josh Homme, che li conobbe quando gli Eleven suonarono per delle date in apertura ai suoi Queens Of The Stone Age. Con Chris Cornell una Ave Maria di Franz Schubert, riarrangiata da Shneider, che apparve in una compilation speciale natalizia, con il preciso intento di fare avvicinare interessare i giovani alla musica classica. La storia però finisce tristemente, perché nel 2008 una malattia portò via Natasha Shneider. Johannes continua a suonare e produrre, spesso accompagnato nel ricordo della moglie da tutti i grandi artisti che li conobbero, li apprezzarono e ne chiesero la collaborazione.

My Eurovision 2024 predictions

Hi !

How are you ?

Here are my predictions for Eurovision 2024 nobody asked !

Disclaimer : I'm not clairvoyant, so most of my predictions won't come true. Also, please note that I don't mean to offend anyone in this post, I just like to guess what will happen in the next Eurovision season.

The jury system will remain the same but EBU won't bring it back in the semi-finals

The rest of the world will still have the ability to vote

They will introduce a new rule where we have to create an account to vote from the Eurovision app

38 countries will participate

In plus of Luxembourg, North Macedonia will come back

Romania will withdraw following the bad result in ESC and because of poor TV ratings

Turkey won't come back for obvious reasons

Monaco will be back... in 2025 because TV Monaco will join EBU only in 2024

A ballad will win the contest

The edition will be dominated by pop songs in English

Malmö will host

Petra Mede won't come back as a host but Måns Zelmerlöw (Sweden 2015, host in 2016) will

Farah Abadi or Sarah Dawn Finer will be the other host

Carola Häggkvist (Sweden 1983, 1991, 2006) will be involved in the contest

🇦🇱 Albania

The winner of FiK will also be chosen by the public as the representative

The entry will be a power ballad which will be revamped in English

The artist had already participated to FiK once

Will be in the same semi-final than Serbia

Will finish 11th in its SF

🇦🇲 Armenia

The country will send a woman again

The entry is an up-tempo pop song with disco influences

Will be the last song to be released

Will be a favourite of the eurofans

Will qualify but will flop in the grand final and finish in the right side of the table

🇦🇺 Australia

EBU will confirm that the country will participate to the contest during summer

Internal selection

The chosen artist has never participated to Eurovision- Australia Decides

The song will be a sad ballad

It will be popular on TikTok

🇦🇹 Austria

A male duo will be chosen

The entry will sound like a Troye Sivan song

Will not get attention from the fandom until the rehearsals

The staging will be simple but efficient

Will qualify but will finish in the bottom 5

🇦🇿 Azerbaijan

The chosen artist is famous in Turkey

The song will be an up-tempo pop song in English

Most of the songwriters are from Sweden

The staging will be similar to the Euphoria one but with dancers

The chosen artist has participated to The Voice Belgique and was in the team of Beverly Jo Scott aka BJ Scott

Dora 2024 will take place

A former representative will be involved as a contestant

ESCZ will take place again

Eurovision Fact #186:

Following the 1990 win of Italian entry Toto Cutugno, Italy had the honor of hosting Eurovision for the second time. They selected Cutugno and previous Italian winner Gigliola Cinquetti (1964) to host the show. The duo spoke in Italian for a majority of the contest.

Sembra una frase buona per una bacheca facebook, magari con l’immagine del maestro tartaruga di Kung Fu Panda per renderla più accattivante, ma per quanto riguarda il sottoscritto si tratta di un pensiero scaturito da un episodio accadutomi parecchi anni fa e su cui non ho mai smesso di arrovellarmi.

Avevo una ventina d’anni e stavo togliendo catena e lucchetto dal Ciao che avevo legato a un palo, quando un cane e il suo proprietario (uso questo termine invece di ‘umano’ e il perché vi sarà evidente a breve) mi passano accanto.

Da un aiuola con cespugli esce un altro cane che si avvicina scodinzolando per annusarlo, quando il tizio tira indietro il suo strattonando il guinzaglio e portando indietro la gamba tira una calcio di punta con tutta la sua forza nel costato del cane che si era avvicinato.

Sono passati trent’anni ma io ricordo chiaramente il guaito straziante di dolore dell’animale e come questo fuggì contorcendosi.

Io rimasi letteralmente raggelato e sconvolto da un gesto di crudeltà così gratuito e me ne rimasi lì dieci minuti con la catena in mano e il motorino per terra.

Dopo tanti anni di condivisione di vita coi miei cani posso dire che spesse volte il guaito è più di sorpresa e paura che di dolore reale (me lo hanno insegnato Otto e Cthulhu che si sfasciano gravemente senza proferire un cai e poi sembrano morire tra atroci sofferenze quando li spazzolo) e qualche volta ci sono situazioni di emergenza in cui DEVI dare un calcio per proteggere te o il tuo cane (e io allora non potevo sapere se ci fossero stati precedenti episodi di aggressione) ma il racconto non riguarda i due cani o il padrone...

Il racconto riguarda me e come ho reagito. Anzi... come NON ho reagito.

Ho guardato picchiare un cane e non ho fatto nulla.

Da quella primavera del 1991 ho rievocato l’immagine migliaia di volte, con la differenza che dopo il calcio al cane io arrivavo alle spalle del tizio e gli tiravo una catenata a braccio teso tra il collo e la faccia, col lucchetto che faceva un bellissimo rumore mentre gli spappolava il naso. E una volta caduto a terra gli mollavo un calcio da Arancia Meccanica nel fianco urlando - ADESSO LO SAI COSA SI SENTE!

Nei primi anni questo pensiero mi faceva stare meglio ed era sempre la prima e l’ultima cosa che rievocavo tutte le volte che davo o prendevo botte per raddrizzare un torto (vero o presunto che fosse) ma aldilà della penosa sceneggiatura mentale coi tragici motivi della nascita di un John Wick ante litteram, man mano che col passare del tempo mi facevo coinvolgere nel ‘salvataggio’ del metaforico cane di turno, mi rendevo conto che non stavo difendendo proprio nessuno...

Stavo ricucendo il mio orgoglio ferito.

Non ero stato abbastanza coraggioso e dovevo dimostrare a tutti il contrario.

Ovviamente non era solo quello - mi è sempre stato insegnato un forte senso di giustizia e di accudimento - e qualcuno potrebbe dire che in fondo l’importante è che un ‘ultimo’ venga difeso ma invece era... È proprio quello il problema.

Se difendi l’ultimo tirando calci al penultimo tu li stai scambiando solo di posto.

È imperativo morale che tu impedisca immediatamente un atto di crudeltà e sopraffazione ma devi anche essere consapevole del PERCHÉ hai voluto/dovuto farlo e dopodiché chiederti COME evitare che questo venga reiterato.

Se non sai (o non vuoi) rispondere a queste domande, la risposta allora è L’ORGOGLIO e quindi non hai bisogno di chiederti le motivazioni - hai semplicemente dimostrato di essere migliore dell’oppressore - o le soluzioni, perché l’oppresso era solo una scusa per mostrare la tua forza.

Tutto ciò per dire che adesso quel cane finalmente riposa nella mia mente, insieme alla catena col lucchetto, meno rugginosi di quanto vorrei ma sufficientemente polverosi da non dovermene preoccupare troppo.
