When they finally made it to the river, Bug was too tired to do anything but stand there and let Brayan undress him.

"I'm tired," Bug whispered.

"I can see that," Brayan said as he undid the last of Bug's shirt buttons and tugged it off his shoulders.

"I can't really do much but you can... you can... I don't know."

"Hmm?"

"Sorry. I'm not much fun right now."

Brayan undid Bug's pants and then supported his weight as he helped him step out of them.

"That's okay. I've been told I don't know how to have fun."

"You like sex, though."

"Yes and we had it last night."

"But I can't..."

Brayan raised his eyebrows, waiting for Bug to continue.

When he didn't, Brayan dismissed the unfinished thought with a shake of his head.

"Do you think I dragged you down here as an excuse to get you out of your clothes?"

"Well..."

"I'm not some horny teenager. I like sex but I can go more than a day without it. I won't die."

Bug dropped his head and nodded.

"Hmm."

Brayan helped Bug settle himself in the shallow water at the river's edge and then sat down on the bank to take his own boots off.

It wasn't until he'd removed them and stood again to unbutton his shirt that he spoke again.

"I won't stop wanting you, either. I pick my loyalties carefully and I stand by them."

Bug swished his fingertips through the clear water.

"I just wish I could do as much for you as you do for me."

"Hmm. I don't."

Bug shot him a confused look.

"Should I?" Brayan asked as he shed his pants.

"You need help right now. I don't. I hope I never do because it seems miserable. Even if you had the energy to support me as I've been supporting you, there would be no way for you to reciprocate because there's no matching need for it. Sometimes things aren't equal, can't be equaland that's okay. I promise I don't mind."

"Thank you," Bug murmured.

He reached his arms up towards Brayan.

"Can I have a hug?"

"Hmm."

Brayan sat down next to Bug and wrapped an arm around him and then shuffled them both slightly deeper into the water.

"I don't mean to be emotionally needy, either, it's just... it's been so long since anyone has cared. It's hard to truly believe that I've found something nice but... in a way you've been with me for most of my life. Those visions of you, the way I felt... it wasn't a trick. I was right to treasure those glimpses I got of you."

"I never would have guessed I'd come to care about someone in this way," Brayan said as he splashed water up onto Bug's chest and used his hand to rub him clean.

"It seemed simpler not to. Women expect relationships but you can always find a man who will have sex with no strings attached. I appreciated that I could satisfy my needs without having to involve myself in anything as complicated as romance. Perhaps that always held an edge of cowardice, though. There's nothing admirable about avoiding something because you find it difficult."

"I suppose not but it's understandable. You're very critical of yourself."

"Hmm."

Brayan traced the delicate curve of Bug's ear with damp fingers.

"Someone in my position has to be. There's no one else to do that for me, except for Maric and he shouldn't have to."

"No, I... of course, that makes sense but I hope you recognise your strengths and achievements just as much."

"I'm aware that most people would consider me a successful man, if that's what you mean."

"You're an admirable man. Strong, principled, loyal and smart. Maybe I can't be of as much practical use to you as you are to me and maybe there's nothing wrong with that but I hope I can at least make you feel loved and valued. Maybe I'm wrong but I get the feeling that you haven't had people in your life who have expressed their appreciation for you on a personal level."

"You only get out of this world what you put into it. If I've earnt those feelings from you, I'm glad but it's my own fault I've never had those kinds of connections before."

"Brayan... does it matter?"

"Hmm."

Brayan stared out across the water.

"Maybe not. There's a time and a place for blame and responsibility, as with all things. Deflecting your sympathy doesn't add anything to the conversation, does it?"

"I wasn't trying to scold you. Just... please. Let yourself take a break."

"I'll try."

Dara had been talking to Mathers about medicine for quite some time now and Maric had shamefully found himself feeling like a jealous child as he sat at a distance, pretending to be interested in other things.

That was one part of himself he didn't like but as a prince, everyone indulged it.

Everyone made room in their lives for his petty whims.

Until he was around eight or nine, he hadn't even been aware of it.

He would drag their old cook into a game with no regard for whether he had other duties he ought to have been attending to or whether someone his age was up for the things being demanded of him.

It had shaken Maric deeply when he'd realised people only did what he asked because he was a prince.

That they may hate and resent him on the inside while pretending to happily abide by his demands on the outside because if they didn't, there might be consequences.

Between that and his father's proclivities towards his young friends, Maric had spent his childhood in isolation and he'd continued those habits into adulthood.

He had always felt that he couldn't have friendships or sincere relationships of any kind because he couldn't trust people to be honest with him.

He didn't want to live by those ideas anymore.

Maric sat down next to Raedon, who was cutting vegetables for dinner.

"Can I help?"

For a moment, Raedon just looked stunned and then he quickly shook his head.

"No, no. You don't have to."

"I'm well aware I don't have to. I'm asking if I can be of help."

"Cutting vegetables isn't a very princely job."

"Princes don't cut vegetables because they have more important matters to attend to. This prince, right now, has nothing else to do. Are you going to let me help with dinner or not?"

Raedon opened his mouth but it took him a moment to answer.

"Of course. If you want to. I, uh..."

He offered Maric the knife he'd been using.

"Do you know how?"

"Ah," Maric said as he accepted the knife.

"I do not. Can you show me?"

"Of course."
