2,000-Year-Old Roman Villa Discovered in Naples
A three-year project to build a children’s playground and recreation area south of the Italian city of Naples has unearthed the ruins of a 2,000-year-old clifftop beach house.
Built in the first century, the panoramic mansion — which overlooks the islands of Ischia and Procida — is now partly flooded by the sea. Experts believe it could have once been the opulent residence of Pliny the Elder, the legendary author, naturalist, and commander of the Roman navy fleet stationed there.
The discovery, made last week in the coastal town of Bacoli, unearthed the thick perimeter stone walls of 10 large rooms with floors, tiled walls and a maze of intact panoramic outdoor terraces.
Back in the first century, the mansion would have been located within the Roman port at Misenum, where for four centuries a fleet of 70 ships controlled the Tyrrhenian Sea, the security of which was key to holding the western flank of the Roman empire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It is likely that the majestic villa had a 360-degree view of the gulf of Naples for strategic military purposes,” Simona Formola, lead archaeologist at Naples’ art heritage, said in an interview. “We think (the excavation of) deeper layers could reveal more rooms and even frescoes — potentially also precious findings.”
Authorities were surprised by the elaborate style of the walls, which were constructed with diamond-shaped tufa (limestone) blocks placed in a net-like ornamental pattern about 70 centimeters (27.5 inches) below ground.
The villa runs down to a little crumbling stone dock now located about four meters below sea level. That this — and other parts of the unearthed villa — are now underwater is due to the phenomenon of “negative bradyseism,” a term used to describe the gradual descent of the earth’s surface into the sea in areas exposed to frequent volcanic activity. (The area borders a moon-shaped “caldera” or extinct volcanic crater).
Digs will continue in coming months, with authorities hoping to shed further light on not only the form of the beach villa itself, but the broader life and structure of Misenum, one of the most important colonies in the Roman Empire.
“The discovery is even more exceptional given that we know very little (about) the port of Misenum,” said Formola.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as acting as a lookout point, Pliny’s beach villa would have also likely been used for leisure. The private dock was where he would greet high-ranking guests arriving by sea for lavish parties. Many Ancient Romans used to flock to Bacoli and the surrounding area, to enjoy their vacation homes and the region’s thermal baths and spa retreats.
Bacoli is located within the so-called “Phlegraean Fields” (or “Fire Plains”), which are dotted with natural geysers and tiny active craters where there are still frequent earthquakes. Due to its blazes and sulphureous vapors, the ancients believed it to be the entrance to the underworld and had dubbed it “the Mouth of Hell.” Indeed it’s possible that Pliny the Elder would have witnessed the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 from the villa. It is known he died trying to rescue those fleeing the calamity.
While archaeologists were reportedly surprised by the finding, local lore had long speculated on the existence of an underground treasure in this location. On the beach neighboring the newly-discovered villa walls, a large brick ruin had been dubbed the “talking wall” by local residents as, in their view, it proved the one-time existence of a large residence.
The site will now become an open-air museum, set to open in the coming weeks. “The ruins of the Roman villa will be cleaned and cordoned-off with wooden fences,” said Bacoli’s mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione. “They will be the core of this beautiful space which… our citizens and visitors will get to admire.”

l’appel du vide
pairing: Tangerine x F!reader summary: there are few things that tangerine loves more than classic literature and meditations on existence. and then, of course, he meets you in a bustling coffee shop. word count: 2.4k  warnings: swearing?? SFW!
The first time you’d met Tangerine, it was on a gloomy Wednesday evening sheltering in a homely cafe nestled between a smoke shop and nail spa.
He’d been seated at a table fitted in a rich three-piece suit (clearly not suited for the downpour outside) along with another man, sticking out in the crowd like a sore thumb with his glinting gold jewellery and perfectly gelled hair. You felt a little pathetic staring— he was the most gorgeous man you’d ever laid eyes on. It was embarrassing how much he affected you without doing a single thing. It would have almost been a little pathetic on your part, if it hadn’t been so understandable. You would have noticed him first in a crowded room a thousand times over.
Of course, it also helped that you had been the one on stage.
It wasn’t a proper stage, truthfully; only a slightly raised platform at the very end of the cafe wall, practically squeezed between the plethora of tables and the busy barista station. The cafe prided itself on providing live entertainment alongside their specialty menu, nurturing local musicians and budding young artists in a warm environment. And criminals, if you counted the concealed business dealings the owner held in the basement office. This was not the kind of place tangerine tended to frequent if he could help it, not with his impatient nature and constant need for stimulation. They could only ever have been there on business, but they’d been forced to wait and sip on overpriced espressos as another meeting wrapped up ahead of them. As he’d previously narrated upon entrance to his companion, a gentler looking man with bleached coils and a rounded face, he would rather blow his own brains out than have to listen to another average teen attempt a poor rendition of something overplayed like wonderwall.
But just before he could excuse himself for a frustrated smoke outside under the awning, you had taken to the stage carrying an acoustic guitar in your trembling hands and a nervous grin spreading across your face. “Hellooo,” you’d said into the microphone, your sing-songy voice jumping the slightest bit. Your nervous gaze swept the crowded tables, noting the cafe was busier than usual this evening. And then regret immediately flooded your body, a sort of paralysis, when your eyes landed on him and you wished you’d never noticed him.
This set would be difficult to get through.
Tangerine uncharacteristically settled back into his chair, all too curious about what would come next. He refrained from making pre-judgments, because then he wouldn’t be able to hide his disappointment if you opened your mouth and absolutely sucked. Lemon lifted his head from his mug with a puzzled expression. He began to ask why Tangerine wasn’t going out for a cigarette anymore, but there wasn’t a moment to spare before the opening chords flew out of your quick fingers and it was the most beautiful medley Tangerine had ever heard.
“this is a song about somebody else, so don’t worry yourself, worry yourself. the devil’s right there, right there in the details. and you don’t wanna hurt yourself, hurt yourself… by looking too closely.”
Tangerine would never admit it to a single soul– not even Lemon, who was as much a part of him as anyone could be– that he’d been deeply moved. He couldn’t pinpoint the source of his feelings. It might have been the lyrics. Or the chords. Or the voice. Or maybe it was the way your eyes wandered from an undetectable point in the wall to him, just for a fraction of a second, before shying away once more. He was not the type to fall for this sort of act, to care for any of it in the slightest– he was not the type, full stop.
But following their meeting with the cafe’s owner, the signing of a contract, he found himself stopping one of the baristas on the way out to ask if you frequented the cafe. Wednesday evenings, without fail. He left the shop with the confidence of simply knowing that information, not necessarily intending to do anything with it.
But you were already on stage when Tangerine slipped into the cafe the following Wednesday, looking the slightest bit out of place once again. Your eyes followed him shamefully as words poured from your lips.
“i’d give anything to borrow your indifference, i’d drink you in; to temper your belief in all my promises; to swallow my desire and choke on it.”
Tangerine settled into a table at the furthest corner of the shop, noting that today was nowhere near as crowded as it’d been last week. He chalked that up to the weather, bright skies and a slight breeze. He vaguely considered that he probably had better things to do as well on such a nice day-- instead of sitting in the corner of a cafe ordering another expensive espresso to excuse his want. He promised himself it would be the last time anyways. he wasn’t the type. he had more important use for his time.
Then there was you. You had noticed him the second the door chimed and your gaze averted from its comforting fixed point on the wall. You were slightly shocked to see him again; men that looked like him tended to make themselves scarce, and the likelihood of seeing him again in the same place at the same time was strange. But there he was, slipping into a corner table and ordering a drink, eyes fixated on you, and it took your breath away.
It was necessary for you to look away then. If you kept focusing on the way he was staring at you, it would only be a matter of time before your mouth forgot how to form words and your hand to strum.
You were allotted a further two songs in your set before you thanked the patrons who remained in the shop and began packing up your guitar. Another person, a young teen with a septum piercing and a kind smile, replaced you on the stage. You stopped by the barista station where one of the staff members Linda was adding the finishing touches to someone’s caramel macchiato.
“Hello, superstar,” she said with a smile. “You want your usual? It’s on me.”
You smiled gratefully, nodding your head. “Thanks, that’d be great.” She slid the drink she’d just prepared on to a tray for mobile order pick ups before leaning over the counter toward you.
“You saw that bombshell in the suit?” She whispered gleefully. You nodded quickly— how could you not have? “He asked me about you last week. Wanted to know when you play. I think you should take your ass over to his table and sit while I make your drink.”
Your mouth immediately dried up. He’d asked about you. Your immediate instinct was to deny it, even though Linda would never lie to you about something like that. “Impossible,” the words fell from your mouth either way, “I can’t go over there.”
Linda stared at you, exasperated. “He’s literally staring at us right now. If you don’t start hustling I’m going to throw your head under my milk steamer.”
You threw your hands up in surrender, shocked laughter escaping. “Okayokay! Damn, lady.” Linda turned around with a satisfied smile on her face, busying herself with starting on your drink to avoid entertaining you any further. The amount of courage that it took for you to turn around and look in his direction was inconceivable, but your sneakers twisted against the hardwood anyway and your eyes fell on him.
He was, indeed, looking at you already.
Your feet began to move automatically, as if someone else had hopped into your body and started puppeteering. You were halting in front of his table in no time, heart hammering against your ribcage.
The man stared up at you with the slightest hint of amusement in his expression. He did not speak, waiting for you to go first. “Is this seat taken?” You asked, fingers gently feathering across the wooden back of the empty chair.
“Not at all, love,” he replied smoothly. It took every last ounce of strength in your body to not collapse into the seat upon hearing his poignant British accent. You were always a sucker for a good accent.
Then you noticed the book he had on the table between you.
“No way,” you said, instinctively going to grab it. Your fingers danced across the cover, familiar as you had the exact same copy at home. “You’re reading Virginia Woolf.”
Tangerine would never admit it, but in that moment, you’d taken his breath away. You looked up at him with pure excitement radiating across your face, a slight twinkle in your eyes. He almost forgot to speak, something out of character for a man that was never at loss for words. “You’ve read this?” He asked, eyes skimming over the cover to avoid your intense gaze for just a moment.
“I am made and remade continually. Different people draw different words from me.” It was so clearly an excerpt from the novel The Waves, and Tangerine felt like his mouth might split in two as he smiled at you. The words sounded beautiful from your mouth. “I read it a year ago. Absolutely adored it.”
“I’ve only started it recently.” He admitted to you, a bit sheepish. “But I thoroughly enjoyed To The Lighthouse.”
A well-read man, in a three piece suit, with a glorious head of hair, a NICE accent, beautiful eyes, and a mug of espresso that you did not hesitate to steal. You knew the only way any of this could continue— a person like him talking to someone like you— was to keep him engaged.
You noted the way he stared at you, eyes flickering, as you took a slow sip from his cup. You made a face as you set it down, wanting to play it lightly and joke with him. “Yeah, you definitely loved that one from the taste of this coffee.”
The man did something unexpected— he rolled his eyes with a scoff. “Don’t tell me you’re the type to drown yours in cream and sugar.” As if on cue, Linda reached your table with your iced drink— which was, in fact, drowning in cream and sugar. You looked up to thank her with a laugh bubbling on your lips, and she smiled knowingly before disappearing. The man did not avert his gaze the entire interaction.
“I am the type indeed.” You said mischievously, taking a quick sip from your own drink. “I may be a depressed artist, but taking my coffee black is where I draw the line. I’m not method.”
“Well, aren’t you just full of surprises.” He smiled easily. Your stomach did a backflip off a three-story building from the tone of his voice, the slight curve of his lips. It was a miracle you were still able to talk to him for so long.
“I still haven’t gotten your name.” You blurted out. The man raised his eyebrows. It’s now or never, do or die, sink or swim. All that jazz.
“I hadn’t offered it.” He replied smartly.
“Yet,” you quipped back, avoiding the sensation of rejection bubbling under your skin because he had to give you his name. After this, it was an absolute necessity.
“Truthfully, I’m not much in the habit of giving my name out to people I’ve just met,” he shifted in his seat, adjusting his suit jacket, “no matter how well-read or beautiful I find them to be.” He threw a wink at you following that last part. He fucking winked.
Your tongue was flat and dry in your mouth. Suddenly, it was a chore for you to swallow, let alone formulate a coherent thought that could be translated into words. Eventually, you find your voice. “Of course, I understand. There’s always the potential I could be a homicidal maniac.”
You noticed the amusement dancing in his eyes immediately. He appreciated your quip. “And are you?” He inquired.
You smiled cheekily. “Depends on the type of day I’m having.”
The man observed you for a lingering moment, his book still between your fingertips as you flitted through the pages absentmindedly. “Tell you what, love. You can call me Tangerine.”
A slow smile spread across your face. Codenames. A little bit silly, but you could work with that. “Alright, Tangerine. You a fan?”
He shrugged his shoulders non-committally. “Everyone loves tangerines. They’re adaptable.”
You snorted, immediately embarrassed by the sound. It was ridiculous how quickly he could make you giddy and talkative. “Alright then... you can call me … Nova.”
He leaned forward on his fist, and you noticed the rings again. Various statement pieces, golden signets, all carrying some sort of meaning that you wished you could ask about. You had a million questions to learn this man and not enough time in the world. “Nova, hm?”
It was your turn to shrug non-committally. His lips quirked. “Well. They appear out of nowhere, bright and dramatic.”
Tangerine let out a huff to disguise his laughter. Checking his watch quickly, his brows furrowed together and he looked back at you ruefully. “Apologies, love. It seems I’ve lost track of the time. I have some matters to attend to this evening.”
The disappointment that filled your belly was palpable, and you leaned back in your seat a little dejected. He noted it, but didn’t make any attempt to assuage your feelings. “I understand.”
He stands up, fingers working quickly to button his jacket up again. You reached your arm out to pass him his copy of The Waves back, and you felt your skin brush against his, noting the callouses, as he accepted it. “I trust I’ll be seeing you around, Nova?”
Looking up at him, he shot another wink your way. You nodded your head a little too eagerly. “I expect a book report.”
He smiled, laying a heavy hand on your arm for a brief second, before he turned toward the exit and made his way back onto the street. As you watched his figure disappear through the frosted windows, you suddenly became aware of your heart hammering in your chest and the blood rushing to your ears.
And his lingering touch, which you could still feel on your arm.

An attempt at some vaguely liminal space-y surreal pics from a work trip to a medical conference.
Taken at The Omni Grove Park Inn Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina
It’s a really old, absolutely massive building, and alternated between super crowded areas where there were loads of tourists and conference attendees and staff, and super empty, absolutely creepy areas with literally no people except me and my camera. The layout of the place was also super confusing and there were multiple random stairwells and hallways that sort of just went into weird side rooms with nothing there.
Including:
- the front desk area was actually above the rooms, so you had to go down to get to the rooms and the conference rooms
- a large model of the hotel floating on a table by a weird side door with nothing by it except a stairwell that did not connect to the nearest landing, but actually went below it
- an elevator nestled in the side of the massive stone fireplace that led to the old vintage hotel rooms, supposedly haunted according to a coworker, the elevator had an attendant
- random, not working fountains hidden in side entrances to the hotel (we entered at night in the dark after a fancy dinner courtesy of our friendly local drug reps)
- a display of fancy gingerbread houses from their gingerbread house competition (this was cute)
Would love to go back and hang out in their awesome spa, but it’s also insanely expensive and the only reason we got the room in the first place was a sweet conference discount.

La Costa Verde’s brochure listed hiking among it’s features using an entire paragraph to describe a scenic footpath accessed somewhere near the rear of the resort. Jessie wanted to explore this feature, so Conquer, who had never heard of it, made a few inquiries with the locals.
Multiple routes to the mysterious path were described, but one detail remained the same: “Just go towards the statue.”
Conquer had of course seen the great statue overlooking the archipelago like a presiding warrior deity, so he had somewhat of an idea where to begin their journey. The boys took the ferry back across the ocean, leaving the Wrangler parked by the Open Air Market’s entrance. Darting down toward the shoreline to avoid shoppers, Conquer, Jessie and Neji headed toward yet another beach Conquer had seen but neglected. They were more than halfway across when Neji’s happy dash drew an invisible line toward a rather indistinct footpath. Deciding they’d at least found something worth their effort, they ascended eventually reaching a spot that did in fact offer a beautiful view of a couple scattered uninhabited islands, and Conquer’s rental.
From the ledge overlooking the vacation house, Jessie snapped a few pics and then switched gears to schedule the rest of the nights activity. Conquer mentioned restaurants, and the spa, but Jessie hinted he’d like cuter company. Conquer then suggested Club Aquarius. Unlike Hobart’s it was a tourist spot, that stayed packed even on a weekday.
With their plans now set, the taller of the sims looked up at the great statue and the dangerous yet still navigable hill leading to it’s base. Jessie then turned back to his best friend with a look of determination on his face, “So are we going to climb up to the top to see this thing, or what?”
They did, with Jessie leading the way.
----
Is there an actual name for that big statue on the highest peak of Isla Paradiso? I did a little search and only got the name of the creator, some concept art, and convos about a disappointing hidden secret.
On another note, I don’t know if you can actually get as close as my sims did to that statue without mods, as I do play with one that allows for slopes to be routable.

Cruising Caspian’s Seas (not a spelling mistake)
So, I have been following an entertaining thread in one of my Goodreads groups. Someone asked, “Just for fun, if you could visit one setting of a Sci-Fi or Fantasy book for a day, which would you choose and why?”
There were some great suggestions, like the Shire, Wall, to visit the fair every nine years, Rivendell, Arrakis, San Francisco in the Star Trek universe and a lot more, that if I’m honest, I didn’t get and had to Google.
This reminded me of the FAQs I answered when I first set up my Goodreads author page…
Q: If you could travel to any fictional book world, where would you go and what would you do there?
A: Robin Tompkins That’s a tricky question. Most of the fictional places I engage with, tend to be great to read about but probably not the best places to actually visit. It’s a bit obvious of me but I would perhaps say Narnia? Not White Witch era Narnia though. Perhaps they are running Dawn Treader cruises now? Nice, comfy, all-inclusive ones, with a good buffet and a nice bar? I’d probably do that.
Which got me thinking about what that cruise would be like exactly…
Tumblr media
Join us on our latest island-hopping cruise,
In the Footsteps of the Dawn Treader
Cruising on either MS Cair Paravel or MS Queen Lucy, identical sister ships recently refurbished to the highest standards. Facilities include: two pools, sauna, spa, gym and fitness centre. Five restaurants, eight bars, movie theatre, planetarium and enclosed observation deck.
Itinerary:
Depart Cair Paravel docks on an early morning sailing into the Great Eastern Ocean.
The Lone Islands
Plenty of time to visit the bustling local markets and get a bite to eat at one of the many fine restaurants, or, if you prefer, the street food scene here is a lively one.
Optional Tour
Guided excursion to the Ducal Palace (former Governor’s residence) and a chance to hear about the darker side of the island’s history, with a visit to the Museum of Slavery. Entrance to both included.
Dragon Island
A small but lovely island with an interesting past. Simply relax on the beach or at one of the many cool beach bars. Local speciality is a cocktail made with fermented palm sap called a “Hot Dragon,” (two shots) or a “Warm Dragon,” (one shot).
Optional Tour
Locally guided tour to the Dragon’s Cave. Marvel at the life size animatronic dragon and see the actual dragon bones in the small museum. The museum shop is a great place to pick up souvenirs, they have dragon themed gifts to suit all budgets, from key rings and fridge magnets to gigantic and wonderfully cuddly plushies!
Deathwater Island
An unremarkable looking little island with quite the secret. Purchase one of the sweet little key ring sized teddy bears from the gift shop at the docks and follow our experienced guide up to “The Pool.” Please, Please, stay behind the line and listen to your guide at all times, it’s for your own safety. Watch, as the local custodian takes your teddies for a dip in the pool and returns them to you, now made from solid gold!
Duffer’s Island
The friendly locals will make you very welcome. There is plenty to see and do here and the restaurants are superb. However, you might want to be aware of this comment that we snipped from “Trip Advisor.”
“The Dufflepuds could not have been more welcoming. Lovely restaurant, decorated in the island style with curios everywhere and a great ambience. The food is to die for but don’t make my mistake, you have to remember the local’s mode of locomotion here people… Don’t order the soup, don’t order the soup or any, and I mean any, hot beverage… oh yes, and no red wine either, don’t go there, trust me.”
Optional Tour
Guided visit to the Magician’s Palace and two hour “introduction to simple spell casting” lesson with a registered second year apprentice magician.
The Dark Island
Unfortunately, due to new international maritime guidelines and certain well publicised incidents that you may be aware of, we no longer take parties ashore here. It is still a spectacular and mysterious site as we sail by though.
The Island of the Star
There is a wealth of information available at the visitor centre here and in the “Sleeping Lords” Museum. Star spotters though need to be cautious, as Ramandu and his lovely daughter understandably, do not like people turning up unannounced at their gates. There are however, a number of lovely items that they have been gracious enough to trap a little starlight in, available in the gift shop. These range from earrings and necklaces, through to tiny bottles of starlight and snow globes. Proceeds from the sale of these items benefit local charities.
Merpeople Fiesta
At the edge of the “Sweet Seas” we anchor up. Your ship will hold a spectacular gala party with fireworks and dancing. It’s Merpeople themed, and costumes are available in our onboard shop. For that authentic touch, why not barter with the actual Merpeople who will swim out to the ship in the afternoon? They love to trade for their hand made trinkets, sustainably made from coral and shells.
Only the Brave
If you are brave enough, the ship’s launch can take a small party out onto the Lily Sea to get a better look at the Reepicheep memorial and the Great Wave. The really intrepid can take out a two-man kayak with one of our expert guides and get even closer. Please note that the line of lion headed buoys marks the international Aslan Line and your guide cannot take you beyond that point in line with maritime law. Please be aware that places are limited on this excursion, it’s first come first served, so register early.
A Fond Farewell?
For those on the Short Package, we sadly must say farewell. You will portal back via picture/wardrobe to your original joining point. *
The party is not over yet for those clients who opted for the Full Package. Your ship will now return to Narnia Cair Paravel Docks via a limited stop reverse of the outward route. There will be more days at sea but that is all the more time to enjoy the wonderful facilities and “me time” available on your lavishly appointed cruise ship.
Here be Sea Serpents
You may have noticed on your maps an area near Deathwater Island marked “Here be Sea Serpents.” The reverse route will take in this enigmatic ocean area and if you are lucky and we usually are (management cannot guarantee sightings) you will be able to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. For your own safety, we recommend viewing from the enclosed observation deck, where our resident serpent expert will be on hand to answer all of your questions.
Cair Paravel and Sadly we Must Say Goodbye
Upon docking at our final destination, we include a tour of the castle and a farewell luncheon in the main hall. After which we say goodbye as you portal home via picture/wardrobe to your original joining point, * your mind brimming with happy memories. See you next year?
*Please note some clients may need to change at the “Wood Between the Worlds” interchange before travelling on to your original joining point. Royal Narnia Lines representatives will be on hand to safely guide you through the process.
______________________________________________________________
What do you think? Who wants to come with me?
PS: For any Narnia super fans who have stumbled upon this, it is not meant to knock or mock the series in any way, I love the work of C S Lewis too, it’s all just in fun OK?

Celebrated local poet’s work to be cast in brickwork of new Leeds building
Location: Whitelock St, North Leeds, West Yorkshire, northern England, UK
Design: Howarth Litchfield Architects, Durham
Whitelock Street Leeds Student Residences for Alumno
As regeneration begins on a disused site in Whitelock Street, north of Leeds city centre, Alumno is planning a wide-ranging programme of artists commissions for its new development to support the city’s growing student population.
Alumno’s first arts project focuses on award-winning Yorkshire-based poet Zaffar Kunial, who has been commissioned to write two new works for the building, exploring both the natural and the artistic history of the area.
The building’s atrium will include a large frieze based on an abstract painting by Terry Frost OBE. Frost took up painting in his 30s after serving in World War Two. After his tenure in Leeds as Gregory Fellow in 1954-1956, he taught at Leeds College of Art. Kunial is currently a Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University and is developing a poem inspired by the work of Frost, which will be cast into the brickwork at the building’s entrance.
The new development will feature specially designed external spaces, including a ‘rain garden’ overlooking the Sheepscar Beck, which runs to the rear of the site before disappearing under Leeds city centre. Kunial will create a poem based on the idea and history of this ‘hidden river’, which will be built into the retaining wall.
“It’s an honour to find poetic words to complement this exciting new building, relating both to the artwork of Terry Frost and also to the geographical setting near Sheepscar Beck,” said Kunial, whose poem ‘Hill Speak’ won third prize in the 2011 National Poetry Competition. “Composing public-facing short poems that can be repeatedly read and also throw new light on the built environment around the words has been a wonderful challenge.”
Alumno has a strong track record of commissioning artists and poets to make site-specific commissions for its new buildings, working with curator Matthew Jarratt to develop their arts strategies and commissions. Previous poetry commissions have included: Jacob Polley in St Andrews, Ira Lightman in Durham and Norwich, Bob Deveraux in Leamington Spa, Jenny Pagdin in Norwich, and Otis Mensah in Sheffield.
“Alumno’s commitment to working with local artists and poets as part of their developments demonstrates their understanding that the Arts are so important in creating interesting and atmospheric spaces,” said Jarrett. “Working with poets such as Zaffar means that the new building in Leeds will be a creative space that references local history and culture.”
Commenting on the working with Kunial, Alumno CEO David Campbell said: “We have been creating premium quality student accommodation around the UK for over 14 years, and have always strived to support the Arts and the heritage of the areas adjacent to our developments by liaising with local artists.
“We are delighted to be working with Zaffar on our Whitelock Street project, which will be a great addition to this emerging, creative district and offer significant regeneration benefits at a crucial time. It will also assist in providing more housing options, particularly to local people, by alleviating the need for students to rent family homes privately in the area.”
Alumno’s Whitelock Street development will comprise 105 residential units that will house 411 students in 53 studios and a range of 4 to 8 bedroom cluster flats. Facilities will include areas for communal living, including a central hub, gym, study, cinema, laundry room, roof terrace with a garden, and extensive secure bicycle storage. The ground floor of the building will feature flexible gallery and studio space, which will be managed by local award-winning non-profit organisation East St Arts.
Alumno and the Whitlock Street development
Alumno’s development in Leeds received Planning Permission in November 2021 and construction has now commenced on site. Located on Whitelock Street to the north of Leeds city centre, Alumno are working with architects Howarth Litchfield to demolish a number of vacant buildings on the site to provide student accommodation with ground floor commercial and cultural uses, including potential for convenience retail, food-beverage and artist’s studios. https://ift.tt/JkeO1lo
Alumno, established in 2006, partners with universities, colleges and other stakeholders to provide high quality living space for over 7,000 students to date across the UK, including London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Norwich, Glasgow, Durham and St Andrews.
Alumno delivers distinct and sensitive designs, carefully engaging with local residents to integrate its developments for the benefit of the existing community. Its schemes introduce a mix of other uses alongside the student accommodation.

Poet Zaffar Kunial
In 2011, Kunial won third prize in the National Poetry Competition with Hill Speak. His further achievements include contributing to ‘The Pity’, a series of new poems commissioned and published by the Poetry Society to the centenary of the First World War, which premiered live at London’s Southbank Centre on National Poetry Day 2014. Also in 2014, Kunial published a pamphlet in the Faber New Poets series and was Poet-in-Residence at the Wordsworth Trust the same year.

5 Free Things to Do in Washington State in 2024
Tumblr media
We all like to have fun. However, most of us are thrifty and aren’t willing to part with our hard-earned cash.
So what do you do when you want to take your significant other on a date, but don’t have the funds for an expensive meal? What about when you want to take the kids out of the house to do something fun, but don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars doing it? Where do you go when you want to take a self-care day, but can’t afford the abhorrent fees of a spa?
These are all questions people ask all the time, and rightfully so. But what if I told you there are tons of fun free things to do in Washington state?
That’s right! You don’t have to spend a dime on any of these five events!
Check Out These Free Things To Do In Washington State This Year!
Soak In World-Renowned Mineral Water
Soap Lake is one of the most unique bodies of water in the world. The water has twenty-three minerals naturally found in the lake, which is the highest mineral-count in the world!
What does this mean?
The water and mud in the lake have tons of health benefits. For example, it can improve circulation, soothe skin discomfort, heal bacterial and fungal infections, and give your skin a healthy glow.
Some visitors choose to slather the lake mud on their skin, which acts as a natural mud bath. With the mineral water and mud to soak in, it’s like having a free spa day!
In fact, the town of Soap Lake has incredible hiking spots, bird watching areas, and a scenic byway to drive down.
Go On A Hike Or Visit A Park
While national parks require a fee to enter the park, many beautiful hiking spots in Washington that are free.
For instance, Hawk Creek Trail and Hoodoo Canyon Trail are beautiful, water-front hikes that aren’t too strenuous or difficult.
If you happen to find yourself in Grant County, which is only twenty-five miles from Soap Lake, be sure to explore the Blue Lake Rhino Cave, which was formed by a 15 million-year-old rhinoceros! You can explore the oddly-shaped cave for free.
In addition to hikes, you can also go to a park. For example, Seattle’s Washington Park Arboretum, Lakewood’s Fort Steilacoom Park, and Bellingham’s Sehome Hill Arboretum are favorites of locals.
Take A Trip To The Ocean
There are some incredibly unique beaches in Washington to check out!
For instance, Glass Beach is a great place to find beach glass and other cool rocks. Then, you can take your findings home and make free jewelry or household decorations out of the beautiful glass and rocks. Additionally, near Glass Beach is a quaint Victorian-styled town to walk around.
Tree Root Cave is another unique beach, with a large tree making up the roof of an ocean cave. Some picturesque beaches with historical significance include Waikiki Beach and Cape Flattery. Lastly, Seattle’s Waterfront is a fun urban area to walk around.
Additionally, there are many dog-friendly beaches in Washington to bring your furry friend along.
Tumblr media
Visit A Museum
Believe it or not, but some museums are free! For example, the Frye Art Museum has free parking, admissions, and tours!
However, most museums have an entrance fee. But there’s good news! Most museums have a free day once a month. Here is a list of free admission days of some of the most popular museums in Washington state:
Seattle Art Museum: free admission for everyone on the first Thursday of every month. On the first Friday of every month, seniors are free.
The Museum of Flight: free admission on the first Thursday of each month from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
The Museum of Glass: free admission on the third Thursday of each month from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

If there is a museum near you that you would like to visit for free, check their website, or give them a call to find out which day of the month they have free admission.
Enjoy A Local Art Walk
Art walks take place all over Seattle, from little towns to Seattle’s big city. These events are free of charge and offer art-lovers a chance to see local talent.
For instance, Pioneer Square in Seattle hosts an art walk on the first Thursday of every month with free parking from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm. On the second Friday of each month, Belltown hosts a lovely art walk to promote local businesses, celebrate art, and connect with the community. Navigating Opulence: 5 Emerging Trends in Luxury Real Estate for 2024
The luxury real estate sector is an ever-evolving landscape, responding to shifts in the global economy, technological advancements, and the changing lifestyles of the affluent. As we venture into 2024, it becomes clear that new trends are shaping the preferences and decisions of luxury property buyers. These trends not only redefine the concept of luxury but also offer insights into the future direction of the real estate market. Let’s dive into the five key trends that will dominate luxury real estate in 2024.
Integration of Art and Living Spaces
Luxury real estate in 2024 sees a significant shift towards integrating art within living spaces. Affluent buyers are increasingly interested in properties that not only accommodate fine art but are themselves architectural masterpieces. This trend extends beyond mere aesthetics; it encompasses a more profound desire for living spaces that reflect cultural sophistication and personal identity. Architects and designers are responding with homes that feature gallery-like spaces, innovative use of materials, and unique, thought-provoking designs that challenge conventional living environments.
Enhanced Privacy and Security
In an age where privacy is a luxury, high-net-worth individuals are placing a premium on properties that offer enhanced security features and secluded locales. The demand for estates with advanced surveillance systems, biometric security measures, and private, gated entrances is on the rise. Additionally, locations offering natural seclusion without sacrificing accessibility to urban centers are increasingly desirable. This trend underscores the importance of privacy and security as defining elements of luxury in the real estate market.
Multigenerational Living
The concept of multigenerational living is gaining traction in the luxury real estate market, driven by a desire for closer family connections and long-term financial planning. Luxury properties that accommodate multiple generations under one roof, with features such as separate living quarters, multiple master suites, and communal spaces designed for family gatherings, are becoming more popular. This trend reflects a shift towards more familial and community-oriented living arrangements, blending luxury with practicality and warmth.
The Appeal of Resort-Style Amenities
Luxury real estate in 2024 is synonymous with resort-style living, with affluent buyers seeking properties that offer a vacation-like experience year-round. This trend includes estates with lavish outdoor pools, spa facilities, private beaches or waterfronts, and on-site leisure activities such as golf courses, equestrian facilities, and tennis courts. The allure of having a personal retreat that provides a plethora of recreational options continues to be a significant draw for luxury buyers.
Sustainable Luxury
Sustainability has become a cornerstone of luxury real estate, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental issues among affluent buyers. Sustainable luxury combines the opulence of high-end properties with eco-friendly practices, including energy-efficient designs, green building materials, and landscapes that enhance the local ecosystem. Properties that achieve a balance between luxurious living and sustainability are not only in demand but are also setting the standard for future developments in the luxury real estate sector.
The luxury real estate market in 2024 is shaped by a blend of artistic integration, enhanced privacy, multigenerational living, resort-style amenities, and a strong emphasis on sustainability. These trends illustrate the evolving preferences of affluent buyers who seek more than just luxury; they desire properties that reflect their values, lifestyles, and aspirations. As the luxury real estate market continues to adapt and innovate, it offers a window into the future of sophisticated living, where luxury is defined not just by wealth but by a harmonious blend of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

Transforming Your Basement: Creative Renovation Ideas
Tumblr media
Transforming your basement from a dark, cluttered space into a functional and inviting area can significantly enhance your home's livability and value. Whether you're looking to create an entertainment zone, a home office, or an extra living space, numerous basement renovation ideas exist. Here are some creative suggestions to inspire your basement makeover:
Multipurpose Space: Design your basement to serve multiple functions, such as a family room, home theater, and game area. Use versatile furniture that can be easily rearranged to accommodate different activities. Incorporate built-in storage solutions for basement renovations to keep clutter at bay.
Home Office: With more people working remotely, a basement home office can provide a quiet and productive workspace. Install ample lighting, including task lighting for workstations, and consider soundproofing measures to minimize distractions. Incorporate ergonomic furniture and storage solutions to optimize comfort and organization.
Guest Suite: Transform your basement into a welcoming guest suite with a bedroom, bathroom, and sitting area. Choose neutral colors and comfortable furnishings to create a relaxing retreat for visitors. Consider adding amenities like a mini kitchenette or coffee bar for added convenience.
Fitness Center: Convert your basement into a home gym or fitness center to create a dedicated space for exercise and wellness activities. Install rubber flooring for shock absorption, mirrors to check form, and equipment tailored to your workout preferences. Incorporate storage for exercise gear, and consider adding a small sauna or steam room for post-workout relaxation.
Creative Studio: If you're an artist, crafter, or hobbyist, turn your basement into a creative studio where you can unleash your imagination. Customize the space with ample storage for supplies, a large work surface, and good lighting to illuminate your projects. Consider adding a sink for easy cleanup and ventilation to remove fumes from art materials.
Wine Cellar or Bar: Create an elegant wine cellar or stylish bar area in your basement for entertaining guests or indulging in your favorite libations. Install climate-controlled wine storage, a tasting area with comfortable seating, and a bar equipped with a sink, refrigerator, and wine cooler. Incorporate mood lighting and decorative accents to enhance the ambiance for basement renovations.
Playroom: Design a fun and functional playroom for children to enjoy, complete with age-appropriate toys, games, and activities. Consider incorporating built-in storage for easy organization and safety features such as soft flooring and rounded corners. Create designated zones for different types of play, such as arts and crafts, reading, and active play.
Home Theater: Bring the cinematic experience home by transforming your basement renovation work into a state-of-the-art home theater. Install a large screen or projector, surround sound speakers, and comfortable seating for optimal viewing enjoyment. To create an authentic theater atmosphere, enhance the ambiance with dimmable lighting, plush carpeting, and blackout curtains. Create a cozy corner for literary escape and relaxation.
Home Spa: Create a luxurious retreat in your basement with a home spa featuring a sauna, steam room, hot tub, or shower with massage jets. Incorporate calming elements like natural materials, soothing colors, and ambient lighting to promote relaxation and rejuvenation. Remember to include plush towels, robes, and aromatic candles for a spa-like experience.
Rental Suite: Convert your basement into a self-contained rental suite with its own entrance, kitchen, bathroom, and living space to generate additional income. Check local regulations and zoning laws before proceeding, and ensure the space meets tenants' safety and accessibility requirements.
When planning your basement renovation in Ajax, consider your lifestyle, preferences, and budget to create a space that suits your needs and enhances your home's overall functionality and appeal. With creativity and careful planning, your basement can become a valuable and versatile extension of your living space.
