Develop a routine for practicing mindfulness.
Find a quiet place to be quiet and still and take a seat
Set a certain amount of time for your mindfulness session. Keep the time down to five or ten minutes if this is a new practice for you. Sit in your chair with your feet on the floor, or you can sit loosely on the floor or in a lotus position. However, if you take your seat, be sure you are in a place you can comfortably stay for a few minutes.
Be quiet in your seated position and feel your breath as it goes in, out, and back in.
As you breathe, your mind will wander away from that activity into other places. Once you notice that your attention has walked away from your breathing exercise, return your attention to your breathing and continue long, slow breaths, in and out.
Do give yourself a hard time for a wandering mind; just come back and realign on breathing. Don’t judge yourself for inattention to breathing because you will learn to calm your mind and focus, whether doing breathing exercises, meditation, or finding a comfortable yoga position.
You’re finished with your exercise! That is how you practice being mindful. It is not a complex undertaking, but it does require intent and time to practice your mindfulness exercises several times a day if possible.
The ultimate goal of practicing mindfulness is to still your mind and focus, no matter how stressful or complicated the task is. Mindfulness is an exercise that can make you healthier in mind, spirit, and body and, overall, a better you.
