Anne Ferran has been exhibiting since the 1980s. Her landmark series Scenes on the Death of Nature, presented at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, in 1987, established her as one of Australia’s leading photographic artists. In the mid 1990s she began working with the meagre residues of Australian colonial past, paying particular attention to the lives of women and children. …According to moral standards of the Enlightenment, the sophistication of one’s own education and manners should be reflected in the refinement of material possessions. Maintaining a smooth and lush lawn therefore signalled virtue, since it affirmed the essential role that discipline plays in the mastering of life itself.

Beneath the lawn lies a stratification of intricate ideological and ecological problems that over time have become naturalised. In practice, a lawn is hard to maintain. It is perennially thirsty. Fertilisers and weedkillers pollute and poison. Mowers and blowers are costly, noisy and damaging to the environment. And, crucially, lawns are the grave of biodiversity. Wildlife has little to feed on and nowhere to hide.

As climate change provides dramatic proof of our unsustainable relationship with nature, artificial turf has become a popular alternative to grass in countries that now routinely experience severe droughts. However, laying green plastic carpets made of recycled car tires over already compromised ecosystems is far from the kind of solution we need. It is becoming apparent that the lawn is a manifestation of our deep disconnect with nature: the materialisation of our lack of understanding, or care, for the complex relationships woven across plants, soil and our cultural histories.

Just as during the Enlightenment art instilled our love affair with the lawn, today’s artists are determined to untangle the complex aesthetic, ideological and ecological knots that keep our passion for mown grass alive despite mounting evidence that we’d be better off without it.

Martin Roth’s installations of Persian carpets sown with grass seeds question our desire to control nature on the grounds of our cultural conceptions and, ultimately, to disregard the natural ebbs and flows that characterise organic life. In different but related ways, Amsterdam-based artist Diana Scherer grows grass roots into patterned moulds to challenge the nature/culture dichotomy. “What does the term “natural” mean in the Anthropocene?” the artist asks through her installations and photographs. Scherer’s work reveals grasses as complex organisms whose networked existence is defined by time and space in ways that often remain invisible to us.

Pointing to ecological sustainability, in 1997 Lois Weinbergerplanted a meadow of plants that grew freely among disused train tracks in Kassel, Germany. Almost two decades later, Australian artist Linda Tegg grew a meadow of native grasses and other indigenous plants outside the State Library Victoria in Melbourne. Her project attracted wildlife to an otherwise sterile, paved urban area and envisioned a landscape in which ecological and cultural balance are two sides of the same coin.

Artists are also inviting us to rethink our relationship with the lawn from the ground up by prioritising biology over aesthetics. In Revival Field Mel Chin filled a swath of land with grasses and other plants to test their ability to absorb pollutants from soil compromised by industrial activities. In a similar vein, Frances Whitehead’s Slow Cleanup project, which ran between 2008 and 2012 in Chicago, enlisted the help of plants to regenerate the polluted soil around abandoned gas stations. Petroleum and other pollutants can be absorbed by soil microbes attracted to phenols and sugars exuded by the roots of some plants. Rather than simply providing recreational spaces, Whitehead’s new urban gardens actively engaged communities to learn about plants and ecology.

Whether addressing the implicit meaning of lawn aesthetics, foregrounding the complexity of plant life, inviting us to reconsider the importance of biodiversity in our gardens, or educating us about the regenerative properties of plants, artists (often in collaboration with scientists) have sparked our curiosity and, most importantly, demonstrated that our responsibility to care for our gardens extends beyond the wellbeing of our families. The pollinators, the water, the soil, the air, and the invisible networks of fungi and bacteria that support life on this planet matter now more than ever. No garden is too small to make a difference; it’s never too late to rewild.

An early Melbourne home in Bourke St west

Dilapidated, abandoned and unfit for human habitation, this decaying single-storeyed building was photographed in August 1915 just prior to its demolition. Located in Bourke St west not far from the corner of William St, it was one of the few buildings left standing from the CBD’s earliest days. Built in 1841 by Dr Farquhar MacCrae, brother-in-law of the diarist and artist Georgiana MacCrae, it was occupied for most of the 1840s by that legal luminary Redmond (later Sir Redmond) Barry until Dr Arthur O’Mullane bought it in 1852 and set up his practice there. Years later it was used by the Cameron Tobacco Factory and its most recent use had been, according to the Australasian newspaper, as a “humble, battered appendage to the Metropolitan Mission in Bourke St” where “old people … engaged in mending chairs and doing other light work”.

You definitely didn’t hallucinate the practice of blurring non-celebs’ faces in photos. It’s 2022–the idea of gatekeeping any image you post on the internet is absurd. Calling you out then making a big show of withholding other pictures from the event is a really juvenile, territorial, vindictive, and toxic way to participate in a fandom. You have nothing to apologize for.

What’s curious to me is the twitter outrage, at first, was mostly centered around me putting a sticker over the fan’s face, but then when I immediately apologized, offered my reason for doing what I did, and deleted the post, the outrage is now more centered around me not asking permission to post the picture, and not crediting the source, which, I do believe is valid criticism in the sense that that is what is polite to do, but in the age of the internet, any photo with a celebrity that gets published to a public platform (as opposed to shared within private dms, or on a private twitter, etc.) is now public, and people can and will republish/redistribute those photos on instagram, twitter, tumblr, etc. with impunity, and not always while maintaining credit to the proper source, because the “rights” of the photograph are generally those of public domain images, despite copyright law still recognizing the owner of the photo. It’s as if the photo was taken by paparazzi, essentially—the Getty photographer’s name is usually associated with the picture on the original site itself, but that doesn’t mean it’s common practice for fans to add the photographer’s name to their descriptions and tag them on instagram. Further, twitter’s terms of use dictate that once a photo is shared on twitter: “by submitting, posting, or displaying content on or through the services, you grant worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display, and distribute such content on any and all media or distribution methods (now known or later developed.”

This is all to say: was it impolite to modify and republish the image without giving credit to the source? Yes. Does it violate terms of service? No. In fact, I did exactly what twitter outlines is fair use.

They also changed their tweet response to my apology to add that I’m using the photo for my own content “& engagement.” Why delete the original tweet to add “& engagement?” At the time of me deleting the Melbourne photo, the photo had not been engaged with hardly at all…? Perhaps two likes? And one reblog from an angry friend adding the source? That’s hardly any engagement at all, and when I saw the outrage, I immediately deleted it when I realized there was genuine upset over it. I gained absolutely nothing from posting that photo, and did not post it with the intention of personal gain or “engagement”…? Let’s be real—tumblr is not the platform where “engagement” drives literally anything, except perhaps for gifsets and art. There is no algorithm I’m trying to hit with someone else’s photo. I was simply, in my mind, recording Miranda Otto’s presence at the Melbourne Film Festival on my Miranda Otto-centric blog, which is used these days largely as an archive and a place to post announcements of new projects. I put the sticker on the photo to ensure I wasn’t broadcasting someone’s face who is not a public figure to thousands of my followers. Now that I know that specific person would prefer me not to do that, I will not do so with their photos again, but it bears repeating that that is because I want to be polite, and avoid outrage—not because doing what I did went against terms of service or even general internet practice.

Regardless, my original apology stands, and I will not be sharing any content of cursedsapphic’s in the future.

Du haut de son mètre soixante-dix-huit, voilà plusieurs saisons qu’Adut Akech fait tourner la tête de la mode. Sous ses airs de Grace Jones, avec son teint d’ébène et sa moue mutine, l’australo-soudanaise foule absolument tous les podiums des fashion weeks, devenant la coqueluche des créateurs. Quelques mois plus tard, sa famille fuit la guerre et se rend à Kakuma, un camp de réfugiés au Kenya. 7 ans plus tard, elle part pour l'Australie afin de démarrer une nouvelle vie.  Adut fait ensuite ses premiers pas dans le mannequinat à l’âge de 13 ans. Elle défile tout d’abord pour sa tante, modeste créatrice de vêtements. À 16 ans, elle signe un contrat avec l’agence Chadwick Models à Sydney. Néanmoins, c’est lors de la Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia à Melbourne que le déclic se produit. En effet, elle est prise en photo pour un casting d’Yves Saint Laurent en vue de la fashion week parisienne. Atong Atem is a Ethiopian born, South Sudanese artist and photographer who now lives in Narrm, Melbourne. Her photography focuses postcolonial practices of African culture and the relationship between home and identity in either public or private spaces. Her work explores the intimacy of portraiture and acts as a storyteller with the surreal scenes she creates.

Analysis:

Left photo: This lighting is bright, light cool tone and directed at Atem's face which creates shadows under her jaw. Her velvet jacket is shiny which makes me think that a flash was used. The main three compositional elements I focus on are her clothes, her makeup and the background (patterned fabric curtain). There are strong bold colours of pink and orange, which are similar in colour, and a contrasting deep green. This makes the photo very attention-grabbing.

Middle photo: This lighting is similar, in which it is directed at Atem and feels cool toned, as a result of the deep magenta and lilac colours that stand out. The main compositional elements are her clothing, her makeup and the flower bouquets. The flowers closest to the camera are blurred, which indicates a deeper depth of field. The flowers frame the shot and make her face in the centre the focal point.

Right photo: This lighting feels like it has more yellow undertones as her skin looks yellower. The main compositions are her teal blazer, her makeup and her silk head wrap. The background for this photo is very simple and uninteresting, which is unusual for Atem as usually this is busy and full of colour/pattern.
