People discussing Starfield's (and Bethesda in general) writing being complete soulless toilet water need to understand the source: Emil Pagliarulo has been writing the main story and plot of each release since Fallout 3. New Vegas being the exception, of course. He is behind "Go find your dad. It's the Lone Wanderer's destiny to die in a radiation chamber despite having radiation immune companions next to him. It's poetry." Or the classic, riveting experience of being a pre war parent for 10 agonizing, boring minutes before the game starts and said parent perspective experiences the main quest fly apart as it grinds closer to the trite conclusion. The wrecking of the Super Mutants into irradiated Orcs, making the Enclave goofy stormtroopers, having a story around dragonslaying and civil war be boring, the utter wasted potential of Synths, and whatever the fuck happens in Starfield that takes 100 hours to get going...
It's this asshole. And Todd. This fucking artless, uninteresting hack who has taken the weird and wonderful worlds of Elder Scrolls and Fallout and reduces them to corporate spew.
Kick Todd and Emil out, bury the Creation Engine in the dirt and hire Josh Sawyer and John Gonzalez to write your games. Bethesda leadership is fat and happy with increasingly watered down, wide as an ocean, deep as a mud puddle, tripe. Meanwhile Elden Ring, Witcher 3, and now Baldur's Gate are blowing them out of the water.
"You're gonna give this book to the player and what are they gonna do with it? They are gonna rip out the pages and make paper airplanes with them." Emil at a Game Development seminar
My brother in Christ. You made the book.

Fuck it, I'm throwing my hat on the ring about the Emil announcing Nate from Fallout 4 is the bystander Soldier in the Fallout 1 opener.
First and foremost, it was a stupid thing to say. As he backtracks to later, the conceit of Fallout's protags is they are supposed to be anyone (and that issue is precisely why some people hate the extensive prewar character background given to you in Fallout 4). For the lead writer to pull a JK Rowling (why would you do that? None of those went over well) is such a major marketing misstep that it wouldn't surprise me if Emil gets reprimanded for it before we even get into the implication of what he said.
Emil your voice is as good as God when it comes to the canon. You can't just say shit like that and expect it to go well. Especially considering the implications.
Speaking of the implications, I'm not mad about Nate being a war criminal. It's a coloring I actually would welcome if the games discussed concepts like Capitalism, Racism, and War in any meaningful way anymore. And if Emil also didn't say this.
Tumblr media
Fallout's canon is rooted in reality. That is part of its whole thing. It's fun to do goofy shit like becoming the Silver Shroud and having a make believe superhero fight with the Mechanist or write a woman obsessed with Nuka Cola so much she traverses two games to basically kidnap the CEO's cryogenically preserved head so she can talk to him for all eternity, but the setting is very much rooted in reality.
You aren't dealing with fictional countries, you aren't dealing with fictional races, you aren't dealing with fictional hypotheticals. That is The Elder Scrolls job. You are dealing with actual countries, actual racism, actual history, and actual fucking politics. You have to be mindful of what you are doing and saying. You can't just do things because it's an interesting plot device without first thinking about the implications.
Fallout's world is a heightened version of our own, a path we seem to stumble towards with ever passing year unless we do something about it. It fucking sucks. I'm sure writing it feels like prophesizing the future and eats your soul a bit. It would mine. But that doesn't mean Fallout can just take a sharp left in terms of story and reality and get away with it.
To have Nate be the bystander Soldier and then meet him when he has a very good thing going for him (an expensive house during an inflation crisis, a robot butler, he gets into a vault for free for fucks sake) very much speaks to life rewarding him for his crimes. There is no hatred in his words when he looks at the flag of the country that made him kill innocents. His speech is speaks of remorse for leaving his family and the cycle of war, it does not speak of the horrors. Of watching you comrades bleed out in the Anchorage snow. Of the scream of shells overhead. Of the fear in civilians eyes as your buddy puts a bullet between them.
You all have to see how it looks like the man is fine with what he had to do during the war, right?
Not interacting with these concepts enough paints a picture of apathy and acceptance. In this day and age where being keeping the government honest and responsible for their actions is so important, that isn't going to slide without it being EXTREMELY purposeful, which it is not. It's tone deaf and lazy.
I respect a lot of what Emil has done in the past, but I am not above keeping him culpable when he has something so delicate in his hands. I hope this situation is what he needed to get his head on straight, or is the light bulb moment where he realizes he needs to pass the torch onwards. There is no shame in subject matter becoming too much as time goes on. There is shame in letting a previously critical series become the very thing it was criticizing.
He is going to keep getting dragged until he realizes that or he manages to convince the fans to be complicit in the degradation of setting. In doing so he is going to lose Bethesda most of its biggest fans who well and truly love the series and what it stands for.
But that's just my take, and I'm just a kid who studies polisci and history and can't shield myself from the inherent horror of nuclear war no matter how much I try.
War really never changes

Avoiding & Fighting An Entity | Writers Talking About Emil Pagliarulo & Bethesda
Emil Pagliarulo Dream 1 All that I can remember of this dream is that it took place during the day at a fictional college. I am not sure if I was a student there or not, I just remember being inside a multi-story building at the college. I remember wanting to not be seen, so I made my way up to the roof of the building, where there was no one. Continue reading Untitled

thinking abt my weird relationship with tes and how i played skyrim first when i was like 11/12 and fell in love with this mediocre game because i didn't know any better, and then played oblivion and then morrowind and fell even more in love but what i loved the most as i grew up was the stories i made in this universe, my characters, the meanings i put into this world that the writers never did. and even now i still think a lot about tes world building and put so much thought and research into something that isn't even mine.
and it's like a lot of love into something that doesn't love you back and actually even Hates you. because bethesda thinks good writing is for chums. i was excited for tes 6 once as a wee lad but now im genuinely hoping that, if anything it gets cancelled bc i don't want this thing i love to eat itself further.
i do think about my characters and how much i love them. and how i wonder what if i Moved➡️them to an original fantasy universe where the things i don't like about tes don't exist but they're so deeply anchored in the game setting and lore i dunno how id do it without making fundamentally different characters.
i know it's just video games like it's polygons. but Man. :/

To be clear, it doesn't actually matter if FNV got "retconned" by the show or not.
I'm already seeing people on social media post screenshots of Emil Pagliarulo's tweets where he confirms that FNV is canon to the show, but that was never what I was upset about. In fact, I didn't even notice until just now that the year that the "Fall of Shady Sands" happened the same year as the First Battle of Hoover Dam.
The thing is, even in the most generous interpretation: that FNV did happen, the writers just can't keep track of the year when it happened (an embarrassing mistake by itself) is still terrible, because that means that NCR and New Vegas got offscreened, and the events of FNV ended up not mattering worth a fuck. The way the writers handled this still speaks of immense disrespect towards Obsidian's work on the game.

genuinely loathe anti-intellectualism and "the curtains were just blue" type rhetoric but when it comes to bethesda games oftentimes there is a point at which it just ISN'T that deep bc the writing is just. that bad.
Like i'm all for deriving your own meaning/interpretation/analyses from the text of the games but theres a point where you need to be praising yourself on your interpretation instead of bethesda on their writing because i can guarantee bethesda did not think about it that hard. the games arent DEVOID of meaning or good writing in places, but emil pagliarulo thinks the last dragonborn is an apt christ figure and that the dark brotherhood are the "twisted and evil" version of the catholic church there is literally no hope here

The show, the NCR, and me defending their timeline
If you know, you know. SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT. Do not read if you haven't seen the show in its entirety. Stamped and immediately published so if you see spelling mistakes, no u don't
Tumblr media
Now, the tv show did absolutely fuck up the fact that they didn't put a date under the blast, but you need to realize that Lucy and Maximus both lived in Shady Sands as children! The blast itself couldn't have been in 2277.
Especially when the show is set in 2296.
Now following this, in the show, Maximus/The show calls Shady Sands the first capitol of the NCR. I believe this correlates to the 'fall of Shady Sands' to say not that the NCR is irrelevant, but that something happened along the way for the NCR to essentially lose its hold on the city. The fall of an empire takes longer than a day. And events like that are labeled in hindsight! It wasn't the 'fall of Rome' to the Romans, it was a buildup to the world's shittiest Tuesday. We know it as the Fall of Rome.
The Vaulties know it as the Fall of Shady Sands.
The question is; what did the city fall to? Fact of the matter is that the NCR was already showing signs of being overtaxed with the First Battle of Hoover Dam. They lost a prison to some basic ass gang, and a good 100 men in the fight to reclaim it. They didn't pursue the Legion after the battle and could have done numbers to the faction. There's a very good chance that something happened very fast and very violently to make the NCR lose its hold on Shady Sands. They’re not retconning New Vegas, they’re giving us mapped out teasers to the truth! That’s why 'The Fall' starts in 2277. It begins with Hoover Dam.
New Vegas doesn't happen till 2281. Lucy and Maximus are both early 20s, and were at least 5 and at most 8 when Shady Sands was nuked. 15 years have passed since New Vegas and 19 since the alleged bomb! They would have to have been younger for the bomb to happen before the game. It's very plausible that the events happened post-game, and do not retcon NV at all.
In the end, we won't know the truth till next season, but I think there's a reason the writers both inserted Shady Sands and the NCR conversation into the story; its going to become very relevant, very quickly. House is in the show, for goodness sake, at that same round table Bud is. There's a reason Hank ran to NV. They're going to have to address the events, and we are going to get answers.
EDIT TO ADD: this is a tweet from Emil Pagliarulo, designer at Bethesda:
Tumblr media
And Bethesda/Todd okayed or vetoed every choice and plot point in the television show as they’re also making another Fallout game, and have plans for the events in that. Todd wouldn’t have nuked their best selling game. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a statement from him sometime this week because of the blowback regarding the blackboard.
It’ll be fine.
