A recent survey reveals that CMOs around the world are optimistic and confident about GenAI’s future ability to enhance productivity and create competitive advantage. Seventy per cent are already using GenAI and 19 per cent are testing it. And the main areas they’re exploring are personalisation (67%), content creation (49%) and market segmentation (41%).
However, for many consumer brands, the divide between expectations and reality looms large. Marketers envisioning a seamless, magical customer experience must recognise that AI’s effectiveness depends on high-quality underlying data. Without that, the AI falls flat, leaving marketers grappling with a less-than-magical reality.
AI-powered marketing fail
Let’s take a closer look at what AI-powered marketing with poor data quality could look like. Say I’m a customer of a general sports apparel and outdoor store, and I’m planning for my upcoming annual winter ski trip. I’m excited to use the personal shopper AI to give me an experience that’s easy and customised to me.
I need to fill in some gaps in my ski wardrobe, so I ask the personal shopper AI to suggest some items to purchase. But the AI is creating its responses based on data about me that’s been scattered across the brand’s multiple systems. Without a clear picture of who I am, it asks me for some basic information that it should already know. Slightly annoying… I’m used to entering my info when I shop online, but I was hoping the AI upgrade to the experience would make things easier for me. 
Because my data is so disconnected, the AI concierge only has an order associated with my name from two years ago, which was actually a gift. Without a full picture of me, this personal shopper AI is unable to generate accurate insights and ends up sharing recommendations that aren’t helpful.
Ultimately this subpar experience makes me less excited about purchasing from this brand, and I decide to go elsewhere. 
The culprit behind a disconnected and impersonal generative AI experience is data quality — poor data quality = poor customer experience. 
AI-powered marketing for the win
Now, let’s revisit this outdoor sports retailer scenario, but imagine that the personal shopper AI is powered by accurate, unified data that has a complete history of my interactions with the brand from first purchase to last return. 
I enter my first question, and I get a super-personalised and friendly response, already starting to create the experience of a one-on-one connection with a helpful sales associate. It automatically references my shopping history and connects my past purchases to my current shopping needs. 
Based on my prompts and responses, the concierge provides a tailored set of recommendations to fill in my ski wardrobe along with direct links to purchase. The AI is then able to generate sophisticated insights about me as a customer and even make predictions about the types of products I might want to buy based on my past purchases, driving up the likelihood of me purchasing and potentially even expanding my basket to buy additional items. 
Within the experience, I am able to actually use the concierge to order without having to navigate elsewhere. I also know my returns or any future purchases will be incorporated into my profile. 
Because it knew my history and preferences, Generative AI was able to create a buying experience for me that was super personalised and convenient. This is a brand I will keep returning to for future purchases.
In other words, when it comes to AI for marketing, better data = better results.
So how do you actually address the data quality challenge? And what could that look like in this new world of AI?
Solving the data quality problem
The critical first element to powering an effective AI strategy is a unified customer data foundation. The tricky part is that accurately unifying customer data is hard due to its scale and complexity — most consumers have at least two email addresses, have moved over eleven times in their lifetimes and use an average of five channels (or if they are millennials or Gen Z, it’s actually twelve channels).
Many familiar approaches to unifying customer data are rules-based and use deterministic/fuzzy matching, but these methods are rigid and break down when data doesn’t match perfectly. This, in turn, creates an inaccurate customer profile that can actually miss a huge portion of a customer’s lifetime history with the brand and not account for recent purchases or changes of contact information. 
A better way to build a unified data foundation actually involves using AI models (a different flavour of AI than generative AI for marketing) to find the connections between data points to tell if they belong to the same person with the same nuance and flexibility of a human but at massive scale. 
When your customer data tools can use AI to unify every touchpoint in the customer journey from first interaction to last purchase and beyond (loyalty, email, website data, etc…), the result is a comprehensive customer profile that tells you who your customers are and how they interact with your brand. 
How data quality in generative AI drives growth
For the most part, marketers have access to the same set of generative AI tools, therefore, the fuel you input will become your differentiator. 
Data quality to power AI provides benefits in three areas: 
Customer experiences that stand out — more personalised, creative offers, better customer service interactions, a smoother end-to-end experience, etc.
Operational efficiency gains for your teams — faster time to market, less manual intervention, better ROI on campaigns, etc.
Reduced compute costs — better-informed AI doesn’t need to go back and forth with the user, which saves on racking up API calls that quickly get expensive
As generative AI tools for marketing continue to evolve, they bring the promise of getting back to the level of one-to-one personalisation that customers would expect in their favourite stores, but now at a massive scale. That won’t happen on its own, though — brands need to provide AI tools with accurate customer data to bring the AI magic to life.
The dos and don’ts of AI in marketing
AI is a helpful sidekick to many industries, especially marketing — as long as it’s leveraged appropriately. Here’s a quick ‘cheat-sheet’ to help marketers on their GenAI journey:

Carefully evaluate if Gen AI is the most appropriate tool for your specific use case.

Google is going to start scraping all of their platforms to use for AI training. So, here are some alternatives for common Google tools!
Google Chrome -> Firefox
If you’re on tumblr, you’ve probably already been told this a thousand times. But FireFox is an open-source browser which is safe, fast and secure. Basically all other browsers are Chrome reskins. Try Firefox Profilemaker, Arkenfox and Librewolf! Alternatively, vanilla Firefox is alright, but get Ublock Origin, turn off pocket, and get Tabliss.
Google Search -> DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo very rarely tracks or stores your browsing data (though they have only been known to sell this info to Microsoft). Don’t use their browser; only their search engine. Domain visits in their browser get shared. Alternatively, you can also use Ecosia, which is a safe search engine that uses its income to plant trees! 🌲
Google Reverse Image Search -> Tineye
Tineye uses image identification tech rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks to find you the source of your image!
Gmail -> ProtonMail
All data stored on ProtonMail is encrypted, and it boasts self-destructing emails, text search, and a commitment to user privacy. Tutanota is also a good alternative!
Google Docs -> LibreOffice
LibreOffice is free and open-source software, which includes functions like writing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, formula editing and more.
Google Translate -> DeepL
DeepL is notable for its accuracy of translation, and is much better that Google Translate in this regard. It does cost money for unlimited usage, but it will let you translate 500,000 characters per month for free. If this is a dealbreaker, consider checking out the iTranslate app.
Google Forms -> ClickUp
ClickUp comes with a built-in form view, and also has a documents feature, which could make it a good option to take out two birds with one stone.
Google Drive -> Mega
Mega offers a better encryption method than Google Drive, which means it’s more secure.
YouTube -> PeerTube
YouTube is the most difficult to account for, because it has a functional monopoly on long-form video-sharing. That being said, PeerTube is open-source and decentralized. The Internet Archive also has a video section!
However, if you still want access to YouTube’s library, check out NewPipe and LibreTube! NewPipe scrapes YouTube’s API so you can watch YouTube videos without Google collecting your info. LibreTube does the same thing, but instead of using YouTube servers, it uses piped servers, so Google doesn’t even get your IP address. Both of these are free, don’t require sign-ins, and are open source!

The popularity of WhatsApp is on the rise. It seems like a strange thing to say about the most popular messaging app in the world, but it is true.
To respond to growing business and consumer needs, WhatsApp has launched several features and tools. One of the most important recent additions to the WhatsApp Business toolkit is interactive messages. This represents an important shift in the quality of communication that businesses can use to offer a superior customer experience.
What are Interactive Message Templates?
Before interactive message templates, brands would have to use clunky lists to offer multiple options to customers within a conversation. Now, they can replace these cluttered lists with clean buttons that look better, cleaner and offer a better UX.
With the addition of these buttons, customers can now quickly make crucial choices during a conversational flow and move to the next step of the funnel. This interactivity improves the chances of conversion and reduces cart abandonment issues.
Interactive messages and interactive message templates are also WhatsApp template messages which means they must be pre-approved by WhatsApp. They are only available to businesses which have access to the WhatsApp Business API via Business solution providers (BSPs) such as Karix. If you are using the free WhatsApp Business App, you will not have access to them.
What types of Interactive Message Templates Are Available with WhatsApp Business?
There are two types of interactive message templates that are currently available to businesses using the WhatsApp Business API:
Quick replies
Call-to-action (CTA) buttons
These can be added to your regular rich-media messages (images, videos, documents) and normal text messages that you send out to your audience.
Let’s take a look at each of these interactive message templates in detail.
Quick Replies
Quick reply buttons are pretty self-explanatory. They are buttons that users can tap to quickly select a reply that is sent as a short text message. Quick replies are a mainstay of Facebook Messenger chatbots, so if you have communicated with brands on Facebook, you will be familiar with these types of buttons.
Quick replies are great for when you want to offer people a limited set of options, such as the solution we designed for Croma, one of India’s largest consumer electronic brands.
Without quick reply buttons, the person you are chatting with will have to manually type in their response which takes more time and slows down the conversation.
How to build your quick replies
Even though quick replies are fairly simple to lay out, you still need to get them approved by WhatsApp.
You will need to send in the following details to WhatsApp for approval:
The template message that quick replies will be used in
The text that will be on the buttons that users will tap on
Keep in mind that you are allowed a maximum of 3 reply options for quick reply buttons and each of the replies can be up to a maximum of 20 characters.
Once the button text has been approved, it can’t be changed unless you undergo the WhatsApp approval process again.
Call-To-Action (CTA) Buttons
Call-to-action buttons are similar to quick reply buttons in that they are tappable and generate a quick response.
However, they have a different purpose within the conversation. Whereas quick reply buttons are used by customers to select from a bunch of different options, CTA buttons as the name suggests prompt the customer to take an action.
The action could be anything from visiting a link to calling a phone number, depending on the context of the conversation.
A sample call-to-action button response can look like this:

The message template that includes the CTA button
The tappable text that will go on the call-to-action buttons
The type of CTA button (do you want to send people to a URL/ do you want them to call a number when they click)
The details of the action you want users to take (URL you want to send them to/ the number you want them to call)
Interactive message templates save both businesses and customers a lot of time and effort and make conversations flow better. The more engaged a customer is and the less effort they have to take to move through the steps you want them to, the more likely it is that a conversion will take place.
