in light of this post i wanna talk abt my ocs names!!!! obv some of u were already here for the changes but!!!! the logic behind my da oc names hehehehe

WARDENS

Evadne (/iːˈvædniː/; Ancient Greek: Εὐάδνη): From Greek Εὐάδνη (Euadne), from εὖ (eu) meaning "good" possibly combined with Cretan Greek ἀδνός (adnos) meaning "holy".

Explanation: Felt like an unwell name for a trans Circle mage to choose for herself.

Kalyani (/kæljɑːni/; Sanskrit: कल्याणी): Means "beautiful, lovely, auspicious" in Sanskrit.

Explanation: Default Tabris is Kallian, which seems like a good Fereldan name, but I really wanted to draw on themes around belonging and identity with Kal, and so giving her a name that could be confused for Kallian was something I really wanted to do - to reflect the Anglicisation that often happens to our mothertongue names. Also, desi elves ftw.

Faris (/ˈfaː.ris/; Arabic; فارس): Means "horseman, knight" in Arabic.

Explanation: One of my favourite names.

Aedan (/ˈeɪ.dən/; Old Irish: Áedán): From the Old Irish name Áedán meaning "little fire", a diminutive of Áed.

Explanation: Literally just the default m!Cousland name because I could not be bothered.

CHAMPIONS

Lysander (/laɪˈsændə/): Latinized form of the Greek name Λύσανδρος (Lysandros), and it means "liberator".

Explanation: Pro-mage Hawke. Self explanatory (:

Miranda (/mɪ.ˈɹæn.də/): Derived from Latin mirandus meaning "admirable, wonderful". The name was created by Shakespeare for the heroine in his play The Tempest (1611), in which Miranda and her father Prospero are stranded on an island.

Explanation: I do just like the name but hmmm potentially some thoughts around mage!Hawke and Malcolm dynamics...?

Damon (/ˈdeɪ.mən/; Ancient Greek: Δάμων): Derived from Greek δαμάζω (damazo) meaning "to tame". According to Greek legend, Damon and Pythias were friends who lived on Syracuse in the 4th century BC. When Pythias was sentenced to death, he was allowed to temporarily go free on the condition that Damon take his place in prison. Pythias returned just before Damon was to be executed in his place, and the king was so impressed with their loyalty to one another that he pardoned Pythias.

Explanation: Thinking about Handers so no one talk to me rn.

Amalia (/a.ˈmaː.li̯a/; Greek; Αμαλία): Short form of Germanic names beginning with the element amal. This element means "unceasing, vigorous, brave", or it can refer to the Gothic dynasty of the Amali (derived from the same root).

Explanation: Chose this one because I wanted a warrior!Hawke, who was only ever really a warrior because of necessity. Of all my Hawkes, Mal is actually the one who adapts to being a noble well (Leandra's daughter, through and through), and so I wanted to explore different kinds of strength.

Alexis (/ə.ˈlɛk.sɪs/; Ancient Greek; Ἄλεξις): From the Greek name Ἄλεξις (Alexis) meaning "helper" or "defender", derived from Greek ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend, to help".

Explanation: Felt like a super fitting name for a red warrior Hawke tbh!!!!

Joan (/ˈd͡ʒoʊn/): Medieval English form of Johanne, an Old French form of Iohanna (Joanna). A famous bearer was Joan of Arc, a patron saint of France (where she is known as Jeanne d'Arc). She was a 15th-century peasant girl who, after claiming she heard messages from God, was given leadership of the French army. She defeated the English in the battle of Orléans but was eventually captured and burned at the stake.

Explanation: Joan is my pro-Templar Sebmancing playthrough. Of course I named her after Joan of Arc.

Maimunah (/maj.ˈmuː.nah/; Arabic: ميمونة): Means "auspicious, blessed, favourable" in Arabic, in the Malay and Indonesian form.

Explanation: Thought about Malcolm naming his tiny mage daughter and wanted to cry. Also, I've always really loved this name - I knew an adult with this name as a kid, and she was really just... I admired her so much. So why not!!!

INQUISITOR

Isra (/ʔis.ˈraːʔ/; Arabic: إسراء): Means "nocturnal journey", derived from Arabic سرى (sara) meaning "to travel at night" - refers to the Prophet's journey from Makkah to Jerusalem (Isra' and Mi'raj)

Explanation: If you know the context behind this name, then the link to the Herald is quite obvious.

Iskandar (/ʔis.ˈkan.dar/; Arabic: إسكندر): Arabic, Malay and Indonesian form of the name Alexander, which is the Latinized form of the Greek name Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexandros), which meant "defending men" from Greek ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend, help" and ἀνήρ (aner) meaning "man" (genitive ἀνδρός).

Uh oh I’m thinking about my dragon age OCs and how much I love them again

actually I’m going to talk about them because nobody can stop me

Catriona Cousland: my OG DA:O Warden. Silver-tongued dual-wielding duelist and queen of Ferelden. Polite but cool, though she has a soft spot for Alistair and Ser Barksleigh. Losing her family the way she did left her a quiet shell of her former self for a while. Discovering her brother lived helped. She wrote to Liliana every other week until she left for her search for a cure to the calling.

Stephen Amell: built like an oak tree. naturally, he’s a spirit healer with only a couple of earth—based tricks for damage. a lover, not a fighter, he focused on buffing and protecting his allies the whole way. maybe that’s why he was drawn to Morrigan. They were a study in contrasts. He annoyed her with his soft heart until it turned toward her. Of course he searched for her. Of course he went with her through the eluvian. Of course they were happy.

Althea Hawke: I meant to try other Hawkes out all the way through, but my force mage purple Hawke ruined me for any others. She’s brash, sometimes rude without meaning to be. Somehow she and Fenris love each other to disgusting distraction.

Daphne Trevelyan: my BABY. Shy, unassuming, and never left the circle out of fear until the option fell upon her. She became a passionate advocate for mage rights and “one of the helpers,” like Mr Rogers called them. She and Cullen better be able to have a nice and boring life. She’s done playing the hero. Being Herald and then Inquisitor was never comfortable for her, though she got good at faking it due to exposure. She was particularly close with Dorian and, surprisingly, Vivienne.

Ellana Lavellan: my sad little archer. Naive and innocent but inclined to distrust non-elves, she immediately fell in with Solas — and had her heart crushed for it. Close with Cole and Varric, she turned them for support and it crumbled the last of her walls. Despite all that, she is a brilliant strategist, and she’s hellbent on catching Solas’ trail so she can save him from himself. Of the two of them, she’s a much better politician than Daphne, which is hilarious considering.

Alternate Endings

By game canon, all thr origins happen, just the one you pick is the one where Duncan steps in to save you, otherwise the rest die.

As I am a huge fan of that not happening and love building extended worlds for my canon, Ive been thinking about what happens with the other potentials when Sheridan is the Warden.

Ellana Cousland is with her parents when the gates fall, the horrible wrenching sound that signals the end to everything she’s ever known. She can hear screaming, from whom she doesn’t know and the sounds of clashing swords and angry barks. The nearby battle stills and she draws the family sword, ready to run through any who enter the pantry. Instead of Howe’s soldiers, it is her Mabari, half leading, half dragging, a pale and bloodied Ser Gilmore. It takes all of Bryce and Eleanor’s pleas to convince the knight to help their daughter to safety, to find Fergus, and inform the King. Ellana has to be pried away from her parents to escape out the secret exit, and out into the shadows of Highever Castle burning. Together she and Rory are on the run for weeks, tracked relentlessly by Howe’s soldiers as they travel deeper and deeper into the Bannorn. It is by a chance encounter that while battling off darkspawn, that Sheridan and company found them and welcomed the two warriors and their pup into her party.

Chanda Aeducan takes a long hard look at the endless abyss of the Deep Roads and decides to survive. She well remembers the maps of the Deep Roads she’d poured over again and again, if she could trust the Stone she knows she can find an outpost of the Legion of the Dead. She wasn’t made Commander for nothing. Old axe in hand, and desperately wishing for her old armor and Gorim at her side, Chanda sets off through the dark caverns, letting the comforting hum of the Stone guide her feet. It’s surreal being alone in the grand darkness, nothing but the vaguely lit pockets of lava and indecipherable sounds of the earth for company. She’s passing through a centuries-lost outpost when she spots…

Lyrie Brosca had been in the Deep Roads exactly never. And why should she? Casteless arent even good enough to wander the ancient abandoned darkspawn-blighted halls of their forefathers, let alone leave Dust Town. But she’d opened her big stupid mouth again and instead of just accepting what would have been a quick death to satisfy Jarvia and the stone-sodding Deshyr’s, she’d proclaimed joining the Legion of the Dead. If Leske hadn’t slipped away before she’d been spotted he’d half laughed himself stupid. This is what you get when Casteless read. So there she was, in the pitch black with a dagger and a handful of dried deep mushroom, not sure how long it’d been down here, and hoping whatever came along would at least kill her before eating her. But instead of being a genlock, she came face to face with another dwarf who looked strangely like… Ancestors! What was Princess Aeducan doing down here?!? Together the pair opted to team up and they both eventually made it to the Legion and a propper meal. Both survived long enough to march with Kardol on the surface against the 5th Blight.

Kellas Mahariel is not from Clan Sabrae in this canon, at least not initially. Born of the clan, but traded during the last Arlathvhen to Zathrian’s Clan. There he’s a determined hunter and one of the first to discover the werewolves. It is during that period when he meets the Warden and her entourage, a cluster of humans he bares little trust for. He is, however, curious of the blond, accented elf that journeys with them. Intrigued by meeting one of his own people so wildly different than all those he knew. With Lanaya’s permission, he joins the Warden’s group with the intent to learn and observe, but rather finds himself falling for Zevran’s wily charms. He becomes more of an envoy to the Dalish clans after the Battle of Denerim, content to explore and to spend time with his new partner on the run from the Crows.

Nadia Tabris had long been a thief and a killer before she cut the heart out of Vaughn Kendall in retribution. For years she’d been sneaking out of the Alienage, terrorizing and wreaking havoc on the humans that hurt her people. She was an assassin, a mercenary, a vandal, or a theif as she pleased. Escaping from the Denerim prison after faking her own death, Nadia returned to the Alienage ready to destroy anyone who dared try anything against the elves of Denerim. It was during Loghain and Howe’s upheval that she was brought to the attention of both the Friends of Red Jenny and Master Ignacio and his Ferelden-based Crows. Though she hardly trusted the Warden, being a human as she was, Nadia approved of the harsh way she handled the Tevinter slavers, as well as the kindness by which Sheridan helped the other elves. Eventually, Nadia signed on properly with the Friends of Red Jenny, and though incorrectly, many believe her to have been the Dark Wolf.

3) Do they personally take care of their weapon and equipment if they don’t have to?

MEREDITH — occasionally, yes. she didn't have much of a choice during the blight and was so meticulous in her caring for the things that you'd think she was protecting them from dirt itself, but when she's in her natural habitat of a noblewoman then she's absolutely taking advantage of the fact she has professionals to look after them. she has work to do, no time for all of those tedious tasks.

ELLANA — yeah. she’s not above asking for assistance if something is beyond her skills, but she enjoys taking care of her own things and has done so for as long as she can remember. proper upkeep and repair of her gear was taught early as part of learning to become a hunter and she’s always enjoyed it. she’s found that there’s a peace to the routine of it, a nice winding down activity after a busy or stressful day.

RIYA — so i see you've chosen the perfect question to bully riya with, love that. she has not a single idea how to care for her equipment, be it weapons or armor or anything in the area. 100% lessons on this happened in her vicinity but she wasn’t paying any mind to them, which i’m sure definitely won’t be an issue for her in these coming years seeing as they’ll be a cakewalk and plenty of people will be around to handle the work for her 😌

6) What kind of fighter are they: defense focused, offense focused, balanced, or flexible?

MEREDITH — flexible is a good term for it. she prefers to be on the outskirts of a fight, bow in hand taking out the most dangerous enemies from afar and directing her allies to where they’d be most helpful, but she’s not incapable of diving in to handle things more closely or with a sharper focus on defense. the type of fighter who rarely appears flustered, nearly always in control of her emotions and movements when it comes to fighting.

ELLANA — not exactly tunnel visioned on the enemy, but it’s more that she has blind faith her companions will protect her as she goes to work with daggers and alchemical mixtures. give her a barrier and she’ll swiftly dispatch the enemies, usually starting with the largest grouping of them. a pretty big focus on offense that borders on dangerous depending on the encounter, which has her pals kindly requesting she start working on defense and dodging a bit more.

RIYA — very much an intentional decision, riya’s spellbook is entirely offense focused outside of a single spell (though you can argue armor of agathys is a bit aggressive). i played for a while with the idea of her also having some tactics to mess with but it didn’t feel right, felt like something she hadn’t really earned yet. she’s Thee glass cannon, rushing into battles with such an eagerness that her magic is sparking before she’s decided what spell to sling first. don’t have to worry about defense if you beat everybody into submission first, right? :)

9) How’s their aim?

MEREDITH — y’know when you see something so unbelievable that you can’t help but laugh out of shock??? that’s the kind of reaction mere’s gotten more than once after some of the shots she’s made with a bow, but that’s with careful calculation having gone into the aiming and years of practice to support it. archery is as much a hobby as it is a necessary skillset for her tbh.

ELLANA — i was gonna go on a tiny ramble about her preference for melee weapons but she was a fuckn hunter for her clan, of course she has great aim. she’d need it to provide for and protect her loved ones. i wouldn’t say anywhere near the skill of lady cousland up there, but her aim serves her well in combat and provides a nice basis for any archery contests she may organize for the inquisition’s entertainment.

RIYA — surprisingly impressive when it comes to dexterity based weaponry or spells that require it. she’s so quick to pull the trigger, so hyphy in a fight that you’d imagine her aim to be iffy or perhaps entirely off but man. it could be some kind of dumb luck or maybe, just maybe, you have to admit she’s good at what she does (which can be painful if you’re not a fan of her cockiness lmao).

14) Will they assume command during a battle if their leader had fallen or are they better at following orders?

MEREDITH — no need for her to assume the command, she's already the leader lmao. she's gonna have her feathers ruffled if anybody tries to give her orders, the time for that is long past. you could say it's presumptuous of her to take charge in nearly every scenario but,,,she's good at it. she's had years of studying tactics and historical battles, add on the experience of her own fights and her ability to connect with folk and you've got yourself a leader that everybody looks to without hesitation.

ELLANA — opposite situation here in the fact that ellana was a follower for years, then abruptly thrust into the position of leader when nobody else was taking it. between her charisma and own skills on the battlefield people are drawn to her for their orders, which she's decent at delivering on her own but made all the better at with the right advisement and companions at her side. something she gets better at over the course of the inquisition until she's finally comfortable being the one soldiers look to.

RIYA — the thing is that she’s fine accepting orders so long as they aren’t dumb, or what she herself believes to be so which may not always match up with others’ beliefs. where she is now??? i don't see her as a great leader. too impatient for it and without the proper mindset to analyze a field for any but her own approach. which could work out fine if you just need somebody to blindly follow in attacking something, but fuckn dreadful if you actually need someone to give orders and direct separate focus.

Marian Hawke

Marian is based heavily off of Aaron Burr, particularly as portrayed in the musical Hamilton. This is probably her on any given day in Kirkwall tbh but particularly after the fallout of the Chantry explosion, in which she kills Anders, one of her dearest friends, and immediately regrets what she has done. Her intense regret for the life she has lived weighs on her heavily.

Fact swap! Ellana scrapes any food she doesn’t like off her plate and gives it to the dog — Cullen is confused why the dog keeps putting on weight

Oh my god - Ellana is following the rules of pet ownership perfectly! Golden rule number one: spoil that pup! But you gotta admit, Cullen probably isn’t helping himself by giving the dog the odd treats himself when he thinks she’s not looking ;)

Unfortunately Oscar has no pet (or at least one that eats enough) like a dog to spoil in such a way, but both Scarlet and Lizbeth do!

Lizbeth had her dog since it was a pup, so he’s very much her baby. She spoils him but is a bit more wary of weight gain, and would always slap Fergus’ hand if he tried giving too many treats before glaring at him. She’s more likely to be running around or playing with the dog and getting muddy with him (much to both her parents disgust because ‘Lizbeth, dear, we have a dinner event this evening and you need to wash yourself up again now’).

As bad as Fergus is though absolutely nothing compares to how badly Alistair spoils the dog. And once the dog’s gotten warmed up to his new friend he knows he just has to lean his head in Alistair’s lap, give him the puppy dog look and suddenly, there’s half the chicken Alistair was eating gone. Lizbeth just glares at him when she catches it happening, and Alistair always gives her that big, cheeky grin that melts her heart in return so honestly, she can’t stay mad at him.

When the dog later has puppies of its own however…
