Where Anne was associated at court with religious reform, Darrell seems to have been firmly in the conservative camp. Her father, Sir Edward Darrell of Littlecote in Wiltshire, was vice-chamberlain to Queen Katherine of Aragon, and it was no doubt through his influence that she became a maid of honour to the Queen, probably at some point in 1529 or 1530. This was a troubled time in which to join Katherine's household, in the midst of Henry's Great Matter, and to do so argues for a conscious choice of loyalties.

William came to his father's office exactly 10 minutes later. He could only speculate about what exactly had prompted his father to order him to return, but he was not sure of any assumption - even after so many years, William's father's train of thought was unknown. The most likely assumption seemed to be Lord Aldridge's desire to involve his son in managing family assets. It is safe to say that he considered this activity much more useful than studying at the university or writing, which his son took up his time with. However, William did not expect his father to remember his engagement to Miss Elizabeth Vivian Darrell, the only daughter and heir to her father's impressive fortune. This marriage was beneficial to both parties: the Darrells climbed the social ladder, intermarried with aristocrats, and the Aldridges received a rich bride whose dowry would replenish the family fortune. William saw Elizabeth several times before the engagement and not once after her, and he could hardly remember her face, so his father's words about the imminent wedding took him by surprise.

Sex worker wins in Nova Scotia court but ruling leaves sex industry conflicted

In a legal decision described as the first of its kind in Canada, a Halifax sex worker successfully sued a client for nonpayment of services, but actors in the industry are conflicted about the ruling's impacts.

Former sex worker Brogan Sheehan took Bradley Samuelson to small claims court after he didn't fully pay her fee, which both parties had agreed to beforehand. Samuelson argued that the agreement was invalid because it is illegal to purchase sexual services, but court adjudicator Darrel Pink said the contract could still be enforced and awarded Sheehan $1,800.

Sex work remains criminalized in Canada, but a 2014 law removed criminal penalties for people, like Sheehan, who sell sexual services. Paying for sex, however, remains illegal.

Sheehan's lawyer, Jessica Rose, says she and her client wanted to expose the court to the "economic realities of doing sex work." As well, Rose said they wanted to raise awareness about "what is needed as far as access to the civil justice system to ensure sex workers are treated fairly by their clients."

"This type of issue had never been addressed before in court," Rose said in a recent interview.

Emma Halpern, executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia, says the decision empowers sex workers to seek legal remedies to enforce their contracts.

The decision also reflects a changing attitude within society and the law toward sex work, Halpern said. The public is beginning to understand the difference between "extremely harmful, predatory things like sex trafficking, and legitimate sex work by an adult who is a worker, pays taxes, has a business."

As a response to the ruling, Halpern and Sheehan said they planned to hold workshops for sex workers to help them understand their legal rights.

But not everyone in the sex industry sees the court's decision as a step forward. Real change will occur once politicians decriminalize sex work, said Sandra Wesley, executive director of Stella, a Montreal-based organization by and for sex workers.

The vast majority of sex workers, she said, won't seek financial recourse via the court system because sex work is still criminalized in Canada. Going to court exposes a sex worker -- and potentially everyone else she is associated with -- to the justice system, Wesley said.

"Even if there's a chance she can win, there's always a risk of workplaces being shut down, police being alerted to the activity, being evicted, deported," she said. "There are many consequences of being criminalized, even if we win in court."

Wesley says the small claims court decision actually goes against the 2014 federal sex work law, called the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. That law emphasizes the importance of discouraging sex work and denouncing and prohibiting the purchase of sexual services "because it creates a demand for prostitution."

Wesley says, "I hope the minister of justice and prime minister read the decision, read the law, and consider it's time to change it."

And while Pink's decision says that both sides in the court case believe it is the first of its kind in Canada, a legal expert questions its importance on jurisprudence because the ruling was rendered in small claims court.

"The usual court hierarchy doesn't apply," said Wayne MacKay, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University's law school. "Another small claims judge wouldn't necessarily have to follow it, nor a higher court."

And while the decision doesn't have a binding precedent, it could still influence other court rulings, he said.

"The message is out there," MacKay said. "Sex work is work, legal work, and deserves to be treated like other legal work, and if people chose not to pay, they can get a remedy in small claims court."

According to documents filed in Nova Scotia's small claims court, Sheehan charged $300 an hour for her services, and spent seven hours with Samuelson on Jan. 26, 2022. But the next morning, when she attempted to take cash out of an ATM with his bank card, the transaction was denied. After several text exchanges, Samuelson eventually paid Sheehan $300, leaving $1,800 outstanding.

Pink's decision, rendered in April, says public policy requires the courts "not to increase or contribute to exploitation of sex work, and thus favours a regime that gives aggrieved sex workers access to the civil courts when they have a civil claim."

MacKay said the broader social impact of the novel decision may be more important than the technical, legal impact.

"One has to kind of admire the sex worker that decided to test the waters, see what small claims court would do, and succeeded," he said. "That's the way things change sometimes."

Sheehan, who advocates for the decriminalization of sex work, said she wanted to pursue the case in court because she was a victim of human trafficking when she was a minor.

"I feel obligated to not leave things the way that they were," she said.

Yeah, the Imperial Lady emerges at very much a boiling point of sorts-- it's right after Anne's first miscarriage, so the time is ripe, and it's also just after the Pope has finally declared Henry and Catherine's marriage valid, so I believe that was a crossing of the Rubicon for those that had already somewhat been on the fence re: religious changes in the kingdom... but, unlike Jane materializing officially unto the record Feb 1536 (so, some believe this means the relationship with Henry began late January at earliest), Catherine is still very much alive and the Pope has declared for her.

So, in that case, although she's mainly referred to as Mary's supporter, by virtue of being categorized as favorable to the 'Imperial' party by Chapuys, one would assume it's the entire reinstatement, or at least leniency towards, these two women she was in support of, that she was in contact with those that were in support of their reinstatement, etc. The irony being that she's of course still a mistress herself (so how much was she Catherine's 'friend', or Mary's for that matter, who would have thought of her as a mistress even if she liked that she was causing Anne distress?), despite that she apparently didn't pay due deference towards Anne, one assumes because she believed she was no more than one (so if there was judgement there for Anne being Henry's mistress, the perception that had been only for preferement, either before marriage, or that she still was...lol).

HOUSE WYATT

Despite first impression, the Wyatt family name stretches far back into the legions of history, and has often taken a fine position in the halls of court. Thomas, who's older brother died young and sister married into the Lee family, was suspected to be just the same. Through good luck and genuine charisma, he was made an ambassador, a fine courtier and by all means, a prisoner. To some, not much has changed, even if he was chosen to be the new husband of the eternally famous Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth Brooke was his first wife, a marriage arranged without love or even true understanding. As soon as she fell pregnant, Thomas took various jobs to travel abroad as an ambassador to the English King, sowing wild oats in Spain, France, Germany and Italy as he went. Upon his escape from prison under the watch of the Holy Roman Emperor, Thomas took a mistress as his common-law wife, despite his surviving spouse. With Elizabeth Darrell, he had three sons, two died young whilst one remained - all taking their mother's family name.

And though luck had always shined upon his head, it seemed that the wheel had finally changed. Upon the death of Brooke, Darrell quickly followed before then being joined by the death of his first and only legitimate child. As Boleyn's second husband, he has since informally adopted her two offspring with the late kind as his step-children (William and Elizabeth), and despite general opinion, Thomas does not lure for the throne, but rather offers his comfort and advice, whilst writing his sonnets and lines despite the shaken earth they sit upon.

The Ernest family (Some of them): Christopher Ernest (Millicent’s half-brother, Darrel and Emilia’s son), Rachel Ernest (Gideon’s sister and Christopher’s wife), Samara Ernest (Christopher and Rachel’s eldest child), Ralph Ernest (Christopher and Rachel’s youngest child), and Ellen Ernest (The daughter of Christopher and Rachel’s son Walter, and Dorothy’s younger sister Barbara). 

Samara’s eyes are actually pink like Margaret’s just a lighter shade that looks kind of orange, but they are pink. 

To make room for Elizabeth and Margaret I moved Walter, Barbara and Ellen out nearby but they should be living in the home so I’m just going to pretend as if they are still there story-wise. But yeah, the Ernest family is currently full of drama.
