This is not a question, it's more of a way for me to vent, (you can ignore it if you want >_<).
A while back I read a comment about how the lives of all the characters in TVD would have been better if the doppelgangers (and especially Elena) didn't exist. Basically the comment said that all the tragedies that happened in the series are the fault of the doppelganger's face and blood. And while it is true that the reason why the Originals exist and therefore all the vampires also exist, is thanks to the same blood that runs through Elena's veins in no way do I think she should get all the blame.
I have always found it very unfair the way some fans judge Elena, as if the suffering of other characters were her fault. For example, I've seen her blamed for the death of Bonnie's grandmother and mother, or even the death of Enzo, and there are those who hate her for killing Kol... (It's not like Kol didn't try to kill her 🤦🏻♀️).
Elena also suffered throughout the whole damn series because everyone wanted to kill her or use her or sacrifice her, her adoptive parents and her biological parents died, then she saw her aunt being killed in front of her eyes. She also lost her younger brother and was turned into a vampire against her will, not to mention the way she was abused and manipulated by both Damon and Stefan.
For me, Elena is a complex and deep character, too painfully human, maybe that's why some people hate her.
First of all, I love you ❤️ really, truly!
Second of all, you are so eloquent, I’m honoured you’d send this ask/vent here.
I’m going to start by saying - TVD wouldn’t exist if it hadn’t been for doppelgängers, the originals would’ve died as humans, as would the Salvatores. Also, I’m a bit boggled that someone tried to blame everything that happened on Elena.
I completely agree - there is nothing I judge Elena for 🙈 mostly because she’s a young girl who’s depressed and traumatised and has really been through so much.
About Bonnie’s grandmother, Sheila Bennett knew what she was doing, she had been practising magic longer than Elena had lived, she considered everything and made that decision. That night was Damon’s fault, if anyone’s. As for Abby Bennett, that’s Elijah’s fault.
Also, if Elena hadn’t wanted to save Elijah, all vampires would’ve died that night. Including Caroline, Tyler, Stefan and Damon. It is only because of Elena’s compassion/feelings towards Elijah that no one died.
Kol, on the other hand, is more complex but the fact is that Elena was sired to Damon at that point, and Kol wanted to hurt Damon, not to mention Jeremy. We’ve all seen the lengths vampires who are sired would go to protect their sire, and that’s where I believe Elena’s plan came from.
Elena is probably one of the most tragic characters I’ve seen. It’s why I write so much for her, whether it is to set up more situations for her to come out of or if it’s to write situations where she gets the comfort she desperately needs.
And all those people she has supposedly wronged, are centuries old vampires who have harmed her or threatened the people she loves. Klaus killed her, he is absolutely the one at fault in that situation, Stefan abused her and gaslighted her for a period, Damon’s abuse of her was more open, be it threats of physical violence or the stuff he says to her. Even Elijah betrays her and plays on her fears, Rebekah and Klaus openly terrorise and traumatise her. The fact that she can still get out of bed is a marvel.
Elena is complex, deep character, too painfully human. Oh my God, I have never seen her be described in such a beautiful manner. Because she is.
She is human, and fragile and vulnerable, and she keeps fighting back. Even when all hope is lost and she’s surrounded by darkness, she fights back.
She’s a fighter.
It’s who is she, and the reason why I think so many people hate her is that she refuses to fit into a mould. Her kindness and her cruelty go hand in hand, and she knows when to use which weapon. And when she isn’t fighting enemies, she’s fighting the darkness inside her, she’s fighting everything that has been done to her, and she doesn’t just manage to survive, she thrives. It’s why after every bad thing that’s happened to her, she can still get up and hope for something better, smile and laugh despite everything.
I am sorry for how long this answer got, but I just had to say it, because you gave me the opportunity to do this. Truly, thank you so much for this ask 🥰🥰🥰
