CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER
DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE 337 10TH DECEMBER 2003
BY BENJAMIN COOK
“He’s imbued with this slice of evil,” explains Paul McGann, when I ask him to tell me about the Eighth Doctor’s current predicament… “I won’t go into the whole detail of it, because I’ve only just recorded it. I’ll still be trying to figure it out tonight! But yeah, the Doctor’s a bit of a bastard in this one. And that’s great. What’s fun, what’s nice to play, is a dark side…”
“You have more fun being a baddie,” confirms Peter Davison, who’s wearing exactly the same T-shirt that he wore for the recording of The Sirens of Time half-a-decade earlier (his own way of commemorating the anniversary, perhaps?). “There are more things to do with a bastard.”
“There’s more space, there’s more latitude, there’s more elbowroom with a baddie,” agrees Paul. “The good guys have to be patently good, if you know what I mean. They have to look noble.” Is there nothing that Doctor Who can’t do? “I don’t think so. That’s the beauty of it, isn’t it?”
“Maybe there are some things,” Colin Baker chips in, “but if we say what they are you can bet that somebody will come up with a script that includes precisely those things – and it’ll work. You can say that the Doctor could never massacre a thousand innocent children, but if someone came up with a script that gave a very good reason why he should…well, then I’d do it.”
“You could have said that Doctor Who can’t sing,” smiles Sylvester McCoy, pointing accusingly at Colin Baker.
“He sang? When?” Paul grins. “Why didn’t they ask me to sing?”
“Actually, when I heard,” says Colin, “that they were doing a Gilbert and Sullivan [see Doctor Who and the Pirates], I thought, ‘This is taking it too far.’ But I read the script and it gave entirely credible reasons why the Doctor would sing. It’s one of the most moving scripts I’ve read in terms of the context in which the Doctor decides to do what he does.”
“A barbershop quartet!” exclaims Peter Davison, quite suddenly. “Wouldn’t it be perfect? It’d be perfect, wouldn’t it?” The Four Doctors, he means. “Yeah, we’d go down a storm.” At conventions, I suggest. “I’m thinking bigger than that. We could be huge…”
“Worldwide domination,” whispers Sylvester McCoy, menacingly.
…..
“The hero has to be unmistakable,” suggests Colin Baker, “but that bad person can be anyone.” His voice drops to a whisper. “They might not reveal themselves. You know what I mean?”
“There’s just more room there,” says Paul McGann, “with a baddie, you know?” Does it ever get a bit dull, then, playing a do-gooder like the Doctor? “I don’t know if he is a do-gooder – in considering, for example, how he was exiled from his homeland. He has a bit of a record. He’s a bit erratic and – what’s the word?”
“Eccentric!” offers Peter Davison. “He could be your uncle, who’s the black sheep of the family, who all the children love and the parents disapprove of.”
“I was going to say ‘fractious’. I mean, sure,” Paul says, “he’s a force for good, and he understands that, and doesn’t mind admitting it, but they never call if good. No one ever talks about ‘good’ and ‘bad’, or ‘good’ and ‘evil’, do they? I mean, there’s never quite that, sort of, quasi-religious thing going on. No, it’s just power corrupting and fights around the universe.”
Peter says: “He’s definitely anti-authority in many ways.”
“That’s why I’m attracted to him,” joins in Sylvester, “and I think why other people are as well.”
….
“Is Paul being regenerated?” frowns Sylvester McCoy, leafing through his script. “Is this the end?”
“Yeah. We decided that’s it.” Gary Russell grins. “We don’t want to do Doctor Who any more. That’s it, it’s finished now.”
“Richard E Grant,” persists Sylvester. “Is he not taking over?”
“Richard Who?” Gary laughs. “No, doesn’t mean anything to me!”
“Yes, well, when people have said to me, ‘Who do you think would make a good Doctor?’, I’ve often said Richard E Grant,” insists Sylvester. “He may be a touch young, but he’s definitely the right kind of eccentric, quirky character. Knowing that people want a younger Doctor, he’ll fit the bill really well, won’t he?”
“And he’s quite well-known in his own right,” says Peter Davison, “so I don’t think he’ll get lost in it – unless he becomes the television Doctor. In that case, it won’t swamp everything he’s doing, but it’ll change his life quite dramatically, I should think. He knows what it’s like to have a fanbase thing, because of what Withnail and I brought him…”
What advice would they give the new TV Doctor? “I wouldn’t presume to give anybody any advice,” declares Colin Baker.
“Why should we help him?” grins Paul McGann. “To hell with him!”
In studio, Gary Russell and Lalla Ward are debating whether Romana would use the word ‘poppycock’. “You’re right, Lalla. It should, of course, be ‘affirmative’. But you did enjoy ‘poppycock’, didn’t you?”
“I loved poppycock!”
“Let’s keep it, then. Maybe you could just - ”
“A bit more ‘poppy’ and a bit less ‘cock’?”
Gary Russell sighs. “It’s going to be one of those days, isn’t it?”
“I haven’t even ravished the universe yet,” bemoans Paul McGann.
“I’ve got two hearts,” Lalla boasts. “I don’t need to ravish anything!”
…..
“There’s a jokey rivalry. Yeah, of course there is,” says Peter Davison, when asked about working with the other three Doctors. “It’s like any actor with another actor, really. When we meet up, it’s not for real. And we do put it on a bit.”
Colin Baker says: “And there’s probably an underlying rivalry that we don’t acknowledge – you know, he has that script and I don’t…”
“A shorthand between any group of people that work together is to be rude,” continues Peter.
“It’s a very British phenomenon, that. You insult your workmates,” says Colin, “and that means you like them! The people you don’t insult and have a go at are the ones that you actually don’t like, so you don’t want to get involved in anything with them. Of course we have a go at each other and take the mick. We’re all terribly disrespectful!”
…..
“Actually,” says Nicola Bryant, scanning through her next scene, “this makes a lot more sense than the last scene I was doing…”
“It isn’t supposed to make sense,” cries Gary Russell, poking his head out of the studio door. “The only bits that make sense are the bits that Alan Barnes wrote. All of my bits make no sense at all!”
Colin Baker says this: “I mean, Zagreus – it’s so labyrinthine and so clever, and, even though there are bits that I don’t understand, I know that I will understand them when I listen to it. It deals with huge issues about the nature of the Time Lords and their history and their future – entirely appropriate for a 40th anniversary.”
“It’s very weird,” says Paul. “That’s nice. It’s good when it’s weird.”
“It’s quite a milestone,” says Peter Davison, “I see no reason why it shouldn’t go on and on. I think it’s rather nice. I can’t think of many shows that have reached that milestone. And like anyone else, I want to know what happens next…or before…or alternatively…or as well. It fills in a lot of gaps.”
……
“I like the Doctor,” concludes Paul. “He wears his background, and he wears his solitude sometimes. He’s a little bit, for some people, hard to get to know, and definitely, for others, hard to get to like. There are the complexities there that we come across daily. But there is, of course, the hero aspect of him – from time to time. He’s the white knight. It goes in and out – he can be very, very good and very, very bad. I’d hate it if he were always the sword of truth and justice – a cleansing agent. It’d be boring. It’d just be boring. It’d be Borax, in fact, folks!
“It’ll be interesting to see what happens next…”

SCARING THE HOES - JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown
Tumblr media
Mom, come pick me up I’m scared :(
Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA have been discussing a collaborative project in the works for a while now.  Now that an album has finally been released and is available on streaming services, and I have listened to both the album and the rapturous praise it has garnered from some critics as of writing, I am left with very mixed feelings on the project we actually got.
I think I should start with the concept of a collaborative debut from these two particular rappers.
Was this a misguided attempt? JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown have largely disparate styles, and while many of the beats on this tape are stellar the chemistry between the two rappers is so lackluster it pulls away from my enjoyment of the record significantly.
On the topic of the mix, rarely do I listen to an album where the leveling between tracks is so consistently inconsistent. Song for song the vocals are leveled somewhere from way too low to just barely audible, only on occasion being mixed high enough to make out what’s being said.
The times where the vocals are mixed better still frustrates me in the context of the record. Why couldn’t every song be mixed properly? The fact that I had to listen to the album multiple times and then read through genius to decipher 90% of the lyrics makes me wonder how anyone can argue this is a good mix for a collaborative rap album, how anyone who cares about rap can defend a mix where most of the vocals are mixed as loud as the quietest impulses in the percussion. Or lower!
I could keep harping on the horrible mix to no end, but I would have to stop myself for the sake of time. I’ll just conclude this point that the mix hides what should have been a string of bombastic and fun performances by Danny and JPEG alike.
The opener Lean Beef Patty needs seasoning.  I was considering putting out a track review when this was released as the first single of the project, but I wanted to wait until I heard it in the full context of the album.  Overall, JPEGMAFIA relies again on very “edgy” yet not the slightest bit controversial humor, lines like “fuck yall **** I feel like Papa John” should have been left on the cutting room floor even when they were still relevant. Danny’s verse, while better, seems like a nonsequitur about drug and alcohol abuse when compared to JPEGMAFIA’s more vaguely political verse before.
Steppa Pig picks up the pace with a beat that is more interesting and with better performances from both JPEG and Danny. The title track after may be the album’s opus, a song that is a funny commentary on making weird, commercially unappealing music with layered sax squeals and clapping before the percussion drops in. Stylistically I think the album shines when the weird elements in the production are more sparse and spread far in between so the vocals get some elbowroom, which happens to be exemplified well here.
Other songs like Garbage Pale Kids and Where Ya Get Ya Coke From? have phenomenal beats behind them but the clashing with the vocals in the mix cannot be overstated.
I usually don’t like to pull other critics into the conversation, but I’ve now watched Crash Thompson and Brad Taste in Music (reviewers who I like and respect) give this album very high scores while endlessly criticizing various aspects of the songs or the skill level between the two rappers.  I wonder if this is a case of the Emperor’s new clothes, where no one wants to be the first to criticize one of music’s biggest tastemaker’s holy cows.
The best defense of the album I heard was Shawn Cee’s description of the beats as making you want to eat your vegetables, which describes the production well but not the final product.  If the lyrics, vocal mixing or chemistry between JPEGMAFIA and Danny does not factor into the equation, this should’ve been released as a beat tape. I think then it would’ve turned out less artistically and conceptually scattered.
Highlights:  SCARING THE HOES, Garbage Pale Kids, HOE (Heaven on Earth)

Working in a cabaret frequented by lesbians, gay men, cross-dressers, and sissies, gave Mabel some elbowroom; she could move without worrying about some man on her ass. The Garden of Joy allowed her the space and time to flower into a lover of women. For two years, she danced, waited on tables, acted as hostess, and served drinks.

Awesome High Sleeper Beds For Developing Children
Our two children have their own bedrooms but with the passing of years the two accumulated books, toys, clothing plus further bric-a-brac which they wouldn't part with. They suggested that we purchase them high sleeper beds the equivalent as their friends, this would create more elbowroom in the room as well as having a lot of storage below the bed. a few even had a desk and shelves which click here to learn more would be great for them to do their homework or surf the world wide web.
After discussing the idea in detail with my better half he suggested I visit one of our friends whose kids have high sleeper beds. I did and immediately saw what my kids meant. These beds are compressed and leave room for the kids to amuse themselves or entertaining friends. They even have computer desks under the beds together with their private possessions. This encouraged me to do some of my own legwork online about the bed business.
After doing several homework myself I seen out that this particular corporation is well known for supplying nursery and children's bedroom furniture, whether it's bedroom sets, bunk beds, cabin beds, car beds, attic beds or themed beds, they have it all. They stock plenty fashionable brand names too such as Stompa, Thuka, Gemi, Verona containing Scallywag and are a prime partnership that offers first-rate furniture at the lowest prices.
Our children chose the beds they wanted, namely Kaliko and Stompa Casa 9 that had room underneath to provide them with a desk, drawers, cupboard and a bookcase. They conjointly needed their computers and personal things near. Before ordering, my spouse decked out both rooms and the kids eagerly awaited delivery of the new beds.
Delivery was quick and to our enjoyment delivery was free and we also got an uncommon deal on both mattresses owing to we ordered online. My husband constructed both beds briskly. Our daughter's was a white wash color with a ladder and plenty of elbowroom underneath for her books and DVD player. My son's bed was heirloom and blue with two units; a chair and a computer stand which was just what he wanted.
The put together beds briskly made clear how much extra space they now had in their bedrooms and they were able to store everything tidily. They also could be neatly gathered away when not in use. They could as well have the benefit of an added cozy night's sleep in the well-manufactured, stylish, high sleeper beds.
The other day my sister and her two children came over. She was really impressed with the two brilliant brand-new beds. She couldn't believe how much spare room was produced in each room and how excellent both beds looked. Her children tried the beds and had a lot of fun going up and down the ladders. I think she will be ordering soon.

When it comes to being able to travel and see the world, it’s important that you set a budget and stay within the scope of your estimated costs. Traveling without a budget in place can lead to financial disaster. At the same time, you want to make sure you leave some elbow room for those unexpected costs or the occasional splurge! One easy way to stay within budget is to plan every aspect of your trip while learning from the travel experts who know how to tighten those purse strings and get more out of every trip, for less. Here are a few tips to get your travel hustle on so you can save a ton of money without taking away from your experience: Timing is Everything You can save a ton of money when traveling just by timing your trip correctly. Certain times of year are always going to be more affordable as they’re deemed “off-season”. This is especially true for tropical hot-spots or beach vacations. While you don’t want to lose out on enjoying the key areas of a location simply because you visit in the off-season, timing your trip so that it aligns with the final days of off-season can help you save a tremendous amount of money as hotels will be significantly more affordable. As popular travel expert, Tausha Cowan has said, “If you want to travel to a certain place, be flexible about the timing. If you want to travel at a certain time, be flexible about the location. Choose one - not both.” Off season is the time of year where there is less tourism, which means hotels and even restaurants will offer special time-limited deals to garner business and encourage activity. But saving money isn’t the only reason to consider traveling during the off-season. Because of the decrease in tourism, you’ll find lots of deals on local activities with less line-up’s and crowds, even at the local hot-spots. Oftentimes, low season begins around October and ends in late April or late May, depending on location. For example, in Southeast Asia, off season typically runs from March to October and in Mexico, off season (or low-season) runs from May to mid December. Save on Everything As mentioned, in off or low season months, you’ll find great bargains and special discounts on hotels and restaurants but that also applies to flights! One thing to keep in mind is that with airlines, what qualifies as low season will vary. Some airlines will offer lower-priced flights based around seasons while others on destination or even school schedules when airlines know that families will start looking to go on vacation. And finally, traveling during off season will open up new opportunities because you won’t be disappointed by tickets to local attractions quickly selling out like you would during peak season. That means you’ll have the flexibility of changing your schedule and itinerary as you choose. source: Expert Travel Insider

Embracing a new Cosmopolis, with Kindness
youtube
The movie, Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, was pretty bizarre and interesting to be sure. You have a Chinese family where the mother and daughter have a dysfunctional relationship. In some way the movie is all about that but it goes through a bizarre multiverse storyline that brings a radical perspective on the conflict.
In the scene I included above, the mother and daughter, who are in the midst of a life and death multiverse struggle, are taking a break from their conflict in a universe where life never began. This allows them to talk and listen to each other for once and "just be a rock." The conversation goes into a deeply philosophical topic where Joy, the daughter, is desperately looking for meaning in a world that is, at least to her, completely chaotic. At this point in the movie, she hopes that her mother could offer her a broader perspective, but so far that is not the case.
The deeply philosophical topic that Joy brings up during this conversation is the tension of Cosmopolis. A tension that philosopher Stephen Toulmin discusses in his book by that same title. I wrote a post on this philosophical theme as it is one of my favorite concepts that can help me understand the need to change socio-political systems based on the shifts in our understanding of nature and the cosmos. Back in the 1990's Toulmin recognized that our new cosmology, the world of Einstein and Bohr, would eventually undermine the existing social systems that were built from a Newtonian cosmology (what Toulmin calls a modern cosmopolis). As he put it, "our concern can no longer be to guarantee the stability and uniformity of Science or the State alone: instead, it must be to provide the elbowroom we need in order to protect diversity and adaptability." He goes on to say:
Nostalgia for the Modern Cosmopolis exposes us to the frailty of the image of Nature on which it rests: of a stable physical system of bodies moving in fixed orbits around a single, central source of power -The Sun and the planets as a model for the Sun King and his subjects. This model served constructive ends in the 17th century, but the rigidity it imposed on rational practice in a world of independent and seperate agents is no longer appropriate in the late 20th century, which is a time of increasing interdependence, cultural diversity and historical change. ...By continuing to impose on thought and action all the demands of unreconstructed Modernity -rigor, exactitude, and system- we risk makin our ideas and institutions not just stable but sclerotic, and being unable to modify them in reasonable ways to meet the fresh demands of novel situations. (Toulmin, Pg. 183-184)
This is the challenge that Joy is going through and she is hoping that her mom, who serves as a source of stability and conflict, can offer a perspective to help her see meaning in this multiverse reality. A reality that follows the pattern of quantum mechanics, a pattern based on diversity and probabilities versus the Newtonian order of universals and cosmic stability. Towards the end of the movie the mom does come into a insight that seems to give Joy the ability to endure the chaos of their reality. It is an insight that is based on a central Christian truth, to be loving and kind to one another. The insight comes from her husband Waymond who recognizes the chaos that causes everyone to be scared and afraid. In the midst of this chaos he pleads for everyone to be kind to one another. In his most recent encyclical Pope Francis helps to unpack this wisdom from our tradition.
Kindness frees us from the cruelty that at times infects human relationships, from the anxiety that prevents us from thinking of others, from the frantic flurry of activity that forgets that others also have a right to be happy. Often nowadays we find neither the time nor the energy to stop and be kind to others, to say “excuse me”, “pardon me”, “thank you”. Yet every now and then, miraculously, a kind person appears and is willing to set everything else aside in order to show interest, to give the gift of a smile, to speak a word of encouragement, to listen amid general indifference. If we make a daily effort to do exactly this, we can create a healthy social atmosphere in which misunderstandings can be overcome and conflict forestalled. Kindness ought to be cultivated; it is no superficial bourgeois virtue. Precisely because it entails esteem and respect for others, once kindness becomes a culture within society it transforms lifestyles, relationships and the ways ideas are discussed and compared. Kindness facilitates the quest for consensus; it opens new paths where hostility and conflict would burn all bridges.
In the movie, Waymond makes this plea in the midst of a large fight involving factions supporting the daughter and those supporting the mother. in the background you hear CEO Waymond, one of the multiverse versions of her husband who never ended up marrying her and instead became a very successful CEO, as he offers the mother the following insight during a random visit.
You think I am weak, don't you? All of those years ago when we first fell in love your father would say I was too sweet for my own good. Maybe he was right. You tell me that it's a cruel world and we're all just running around in circles. I know that. I've been on this earth just as many days as you. When I choose to see the good side of things, I'm not being naive. It is strategic and necessary. It's how I've learned to survive through everything. I know you see yourself as a fighter. Well, I see myself as one too. This is how I fight.
In the Christian/Catholic tradition Jesus preps us for kindness and compassion and many times people see this as a great weakness. Jesus is given a pass to exhibit these qualities because he is the Son of God but that does not become a relevant ethic for us. And yet this is exactly what Jesus invites us to be. As the Cosmopolis of the Greco-Roman world was coming to its end he wanted us to usher this new cosmological shift with the same plea that Waymon makes. Unfortunately we did not do a good job of following his lead. Both Jesus and Waymond want us to know that these "nice" virtues are not a weakness but a gentle strength that has tremendous force.
As we face the new cosmological shift that Joy recognizes in the movie, we should be attentive to this Christian plea towards kindness and mutual respect. Least we forget, ths is also an American ideal.

We may not be going through a Civil War (and God willing we won't have to) we are definately experiencing social instability through the chaos of the new cosmopolis. Many on the conservative side are clinging to the ideals of nationalism with the old promise of stability and uniformity (MAGA) which does not coincide with the our new cosmological framework. The rest of us are not sure how to design the socio-political systems that embrace this new cosmological framework order but we know that the old one is repressive and unable to address the new issues that we face. We are all going through this tension and traditionally this is resolved through conflict and war. We already see this happening. But perhaps many of us can take to heart the lessons of our Catholic faith and movies such as Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, and push for a culture of firm kindness and mutual respect.
