Thinking about the twins growing up in Byroden with their mother, happy and nurtured their whole lives.
I like to imagine them getting a farm at some point, though the three still make clothes to donate to the local temple.
The twins would love it, I imagine - working with animals all day, helping to tend the field, making wonderful meals using their own produce, spending time with their beloved mother...
I think it would look good on them - Maybe Vax would take better care of himself, and maybe Vex would stress less?
Elaina would get to see her babies mature into adults, helping them grow and learn.
It would be so sweet!

ive discussed this with my friends a couple of times, and birdie/zathuda really made me think on it again.
cr has always but especially the past few years come in swinging with a very oddly specific representation: the bible belt. i could go into that itself in infinite detail, but im here to focus on one aspect.
something about.... syldor's one night stand with elaina. ludinus taking in liliana as a ruby vanguard general. and now athion's arranged siring of fearne with birdie. there's a pattern here: syldor/ludinus/zathuda. extremely upper class, european (usually british) coded, white/white-coded - and they are elves, which, by tolkien's merit, were "superior" to humans. elaina/liliana/birdie. none of them elves, two human. noticeably much lower class, all with southern state roots (elaina being from a town based on laredo, central/northern texas-coded liliana, liliana & birdie having heavy southern accents), with elaina being bipoc, & liliana being disabled.
i keep fixating on this. the way these women have been lured into impossible power dynamics either due to coercion or desperation to break from their simple downtrodden or small-town life. the way it is rare, for me, to see such specific showcases of how southern women can be lulled into cults and/or abusive relationships/situations in a way thats very hard to describe if you havent been down here, havent seen the vice grip of the christian housewife on the entire small world around you. i see these fictional women in the women of my own life every day. i see them in giggling young college girls my age, clinging to a man who hurts them because theyre someone new, from beyond their hometown no one will ever remember the name of. i see them in girls barely out of high school married off, destined to have 4 kids by 25 because it's "god's plan", or else be shunned. i see them in my great-aunt, timid & quiet as a mouse beside her loud, angry preacher husband. i see them in single mothers raising their kids, like my own mother, who refuse to discuss a father knowing they are judged severely for it. i see them in every cult thats too small for hollywood to care to make documentaries of.
i don't know how to end this meta, i just.... i think part of why cr appeals so much to me? is because it's a show about fae, & robots, & weird fucking red moons. but i see home, too, in a way no tough-guy western show airing on cable could ever truly portray.

Vesper had been fussing all night, her cries ringing through the empty halls of the palace. Not wanting to disturb Vex, who had been sleeping peacefully next to him, Percy was the one to get up to care for their daughter. He’d always been a light sleeper anyways, and his wife needed the rest a whole lot more than he did.
In his half-awake haze, Percy barely remembered to fetch his glasses from his nightstand before he pulled himself from the warm comforts of his bed, careful not to wake Vex. He rushed through the hallways with stumbling feet, his vision still blurry from sleep. He opened the door to the nursery and winced as the noise of Vesper’s screaming got louder as he stepped into the room. “Come on now, little one,” he said as he scooped her into his arms.
He tried everything. He tried to give her the baby formula, hoping beyond all hope that she was just hungry. She wouldn’t take it.
“There’s one trait we share,” he told her. “Stubbornness. Though I had hoped that by some miracle, you’d be at least somewhat compliant.”
He rocked her back and forth, cooing soft assurances, but nothing he did seemed to appease his tiny daughter. He cringed again as her desperate shrieks continued, the sound piercing his ears.
“Well, fuck, Vesper,” he said, sitting on an armchair with her still crying in his arms, “I’m not sure what it is that you want from me.”
Vesper, who couldn’t yet understand her father’s frustration, continued to cry. Percy was on the verge of tears himself. He wasn’t like Vex, who had taken to parenthood naturally, as if it was a natural next step after the years they’d spent adventuring. Sure, he’d taken care of his little siblings when they were children, but that had been years ago, when he’d been a child himself.
And now, here he was, a grown man who couldn’t figure out how to get his infant daughter to go back to sleep.
He didn’t know what else he could possibly do, so with a sigh, he began to sing. It was hardly a lullaby, but it was a song Percy’s parents had used when he and his siblings were too fussy in the night. Some nights, it was the only thing that got them to shut up. Over the years, as he got older, the song became a constant in his life. Even in his adulthood, after he lost one family member after another, he would hum the song under his breath when he needed the comfort it brought him.
As the beginning lyrics hit her ears, Vesper stopped her wailing and looked up at him with curious eyes, as if she could understand the meaning behind the simple melody. As if she recognized the words she didn’t know yet.
“Echo of the clock tower
Footstep in the alleyway
Sweep of the wind sifting the leaves”
Percy thought of his family often. They constantly flooded his thoughts, bringing both bad and good memories of every variety. He thought of his siblings, wondering what they would have given to have the chance of the life that Percy now did. He thought of his parents, hoping to any god that would listen that he wouldn’t have to lose his children as they did.
He thought of Vox Machina: heroes who had almost reached the status of gods, torn apart by the unforgiving hand of the Raven Queen. Percy thought of his wife, the mother of his child, the love and light of his life. Vex, the woman who had once told him that she didn’t know what she was without her brother, the only one that had stood at her side throughout it all.
He thought of Keyleth, who was now the wise and brave leader of her people, how she had cried into Percy’s shoulder after everything, muttering nonsense about how much she would give for the opportunity to hold her partner in her arms again.
He thought of Vax: not quite dead but just out of reach, unable to have the life he more than deserved, the life that for some reason, Percy got in his place.
Yet another ghost to haunt him, to remind him of his many shortcomings. Another raven to watch on from his windowsill.
Percy kept singing.
“Jeweler of the spider web
Connoisseur of autumn’s opulence
Blade of lightning harvesting the sky”
He thought of the Gods, of their cruelty and their indifference towards human affairs. When it came down to it, they cared for no one and nothing but themselves. He’d seen their selfishness firsthand.
“Keeper of the small gate
Choreographer of entrances and exits
Midnight whisper traveling the wires”
He thought of the Raven Queen, the stone-cold ruler over death and fate, the god that had pried away Percy’s chances of a normal life when he was nothing but a child.
“Seducer, healer,
Deity or thief?
I will see you soon enough”
Someday, he would be able to ask her why, face to face. He would be able to look her in the eye and demand to know why he got to live instead of his mother, his father, his siblings. He would demand to know why he got to live and Vax didn’t.
He would muster the courage to ask the questions he was too afraid to find the words for now.
Vesper had fallen asleep again, nestling into Percy’s chest. As he looked down at his young daughter, he could feel his anger evaporate, turning into a soft adoration of his child, an appreciation for the life he had gained in exchange for the one he had lost all those years ago. He had built a new branch of the family he had once considered lost to history, and for that opportunity, he was eternally grateful. But did the growth compensate for the destruction that had taken place, all those years ago?
Had the Raven Queen granted Percy new life in a way that made up for the ones she had taken so mercilessly? Was it worth it, now that he had Vex, now that he had Vesper? Would anyone ever be able to fill the empty chasms that had taken up residence in Percy’s soul since he had lost everything? Could anyone ever hope to replace his parents or his brothers and sisters? Could anyone ever bring back the man Percival de Rolo could have become, if he had not been consumed by vengeance at such an early age?
His thoughts turned to each sibling that he lost. In his head, he recited each of their names in a silent chant. A promise to remember.
Julius, Vesper, Oliver, Whitney, Ludwig.
Vax’ildan, he added, after a moment’s hesitation. Yes, they weren’t actually related, but for all intents and purposes, they were brothers. There was no other way to describe their relationship, in the years they’d known each other.
“You have taken everyone I have ever dared to call a brother,” he whispered, half to himself, half to the God he knew wasn’t listening. “But you will not take my friends, my wife, my daughter. Not in the way you took them. Not in the way you took him.”
In the shadow of the rainfall
In the brief violet darkening of a sunset
But until then I pray
Watch over him
Julius. Vesper. Oliver. Whitney. Ludwig. Vax’ildan.
Watch over him
As the mountain guards it’s covert ore
And the harsh falcon
It’s flightless young
“You had better protect him,” he continued, “Because if I get there, and I find him to be anything less than the absolute pain in the ass he was in life, you and I are going to have a real fucking problem.”
And with those final words to the wretched goddess of death, he let himself fall asleep again, his beloved daughter safely curled into his chest.
Vex awoke to an empty bed, which wasn’t entirely a rare occasion, so she didn’t think much of it. With a groan and a great effort, she sat upright and padded through the hallways to check on Vesper.
She froze with her hand on the doorknob when she heard the sound of Percy’s soft snores coming from the inside of the nursery. As carefully as she could, she cracked the door open and stepped inside.
Percy sat slumped on the armchair, mouth hanging open and glasses crooked on his nose, his arms wrapped around Vesper, who slept peacefully. Vex laughed softly to herself at the sight, about to close the door again when she caught a flutter of black somewhere in her periphery.
Her eyes followed the movement to the windowsill, where a raven sat, watching.

I don't think it's a Hot Take to suggest that Vex got her habit of calling people darling from her mother.
What might be a liiiittle more contentious is that I think she got some traits from the twins' time with Syldor, too. Maybe the tricks she uses when balancing the books, how she signs her name, the way she holds her head in high society, verbal tics not from Syngorn or elves in general but him, specifically.
Vax notices all of them. He'd suspect Vex does, too - not much escapes her notice.
Does she keep to these habits intentionally? An efficient tally of what works and what does not? Or can she not shake them? Is it something deeper - a hope that their father will look at her and see, finally see, that she's his daughter? That she might fit in if she's like him?
(What Vax does not notice are the parts of Syldor that live deeper in Vex. The need for control, the way she snaps out when slighted, the selfishness. She thinks she got all of that from him, because he is all those terrible things, and desecrating Elaina's memory with the possibility she could be petty, or snide - no, no. All the parts of herself she hates are from Syldor and because of Syldor and if she could neatly carve them away she'd be just right... but she wouldn't be his daughter, either, now would she?)

I saw people pointing out that the Tal’dorei campaign guide has Gwendolyn at around the age she is in c3 right now but it’s dated 10 years before c3, and i was confused by this too. I figured maybe matt fudged some ages cuz he wanted to showcase Percy being a big softie for an 8 year old.
but it just hit me, she’s of elven decent…like i immediately knew vex “looked” 30 but is in her late 50’s maybe 60’s, but it somehow didn’t occur to me that Gwendolyn, and by that metric all the De Rolo children, might ALSO be aging slower. Like, Vesper is in her 30’s (maybe late 20’s idk she’s roughly Beau’s age), but she might look like she’s in her early twenties or maybe even her mid-late teens. idk how does quarter elf aging work? (i know matt called the twins, Wolfe and Leona, Half-elves but whatever). It’s fully possible the Gwendolyn we’re seeing is in her teens but only looks 6-8.
(i know that according to official d&d lore elves, and by proxy half elves, are supposed to age like humans till maturity then slow down…but that makes absolutely no sense to me)
idk has matt talked anywhere about how elf/half elf aging (both before maturity and in general) work in Exandria specifically?

Okay what r ur thoughts on Percy and vexs kids i must know
Omg anon thanxxxx I have many thoughts. I don't know why i gave a few sentences for the de rolo siblings but for the kids you're getting a good chunky boi lol.
One thing is that I keep flip flopping whether or not they’re half-elves or quarter elves (as Vex has the blood of a full elf in her, they could be half elves in an interpretation of lore). I tend to just prefer half-elves so I know they’ll outlive Vex tbh though I am not wedded to the idea.
Vesper: She is the oldest child and acts like the oldest child. She loves Whitestone and as soon as she turns into a teenager she wants to rule. She feels a bond with Pelor as she's plane touched, and will often pray for her family's sake when they're going through difficult times, especially when her parents and aunt seem sad, lost, stuck in grief and trauma. She differs with Percy on this a lot, but she gets along well with both her parents, other than matters of Whitestone. She gets along well with Cassandra, who does eventually cut through to Vesper that she can't just give her whole life up to Whitestone at a young age, so I like to think she agrees and Vesper spends time in other cities learning and studying for a year or so, keeping close to Pelor's temples, but just feels homesick for Whitestone so would never leave long-term. Enjoys riding but doesn't enjoy the outdoors much and never liked hunting or anything to do with the grey hunt as a special force, and isn't physically inclined and only knows 'a few' offensive cleric spells. Men and women throw themselves at her feet with marriage proposals, not sure if she'd ever accept any.
Wolfe: Slightly older than Leona and proud of it. He is a smarmy lil boy who think he's the absolute shit, and think he's more charismatic than he actually is. Of all the siblings he wants the glory of being a hero like Vox Machina the most, and becomes a fairly good all-rounded fighter. However, despite being a bit of an apparent fuck-boi, he has a childhood sweetheart he marries early on.
Leona: More level-headed than her brother. She's less of adventurer and has Percy's tinkering spirit. Unlike Percy, she sits and talks his ear off when she's tinkering. She is very chatty and friendly. She loves building things mechanically but doesn't have the aversion to magic her father does. Bit more of a flirt than Wolfe, string of broken hearts behind her. I could see her moving away to help continue with the rebuilding of Emon when she's in her twenties.
Wolfe and Leona: Vex notes how as the pair are twins they're close, but they don't have that intense, dependent bond that she and Vax had, which is probably a good thing becaue these two grew up not needing to depend on each other. Unlike Vesper, both enjoyed the outdoors, exploring, the grey hunt. Both are far more extraverted. When they're adults, they decide to travel, and Leona keeps Wolfe in check. They join an adventuring party and do some good deeds (far more minor) EDIT AS I AM WRITING THIS WHAT IF THEY JOINED THE DARRINGTON BRIGADE??? like they become loyal members throughout their lives, they sometimes just join an adventure as a twin bonding exercise despite living apart.
Vax'ildan: They call him 'Dan.' A mumma's boy when he's young. Good with animals, the grey hunt makes him cry, and he becomes a vegetarian (at least for a period of time). Close with Auntie Keyleth and enjoys Zeprah a lot, I could see him joining the Ashari as a druidy boy. I think when he's young, because he's so close with Vex he just doesn't see much of his father. But as he gets older, he likes taking his textbooks on animals and nature into his father's workshop and quietly reading whilst his father works, enjoying the background noise his father makes whilst he creates. Both get that the other needs space (this quiet time is sometimes ruined by Leona, who eventually realises that she should maybe leave them alone), and Dan is close with both.
Gwendolyn: A little angel girl who just happens to look like a devil. When she's a baby she cries a lot and Percy soothes her better, I think because he had the pact with Ipkesh. Vex and Percy are honest with Gwen and the children (as their other kids could have a tiefling because of Percy) that Percy is the reason they have a tiefling BUT with the rest of Whitestone and visiting parties Vex is like 'yeah?? maybe it was me??? what of it??'. Whitestone accepts Gwendolyn as she is (said before but I think after everything that happened in whitestone, the people of whitestone would be quick to realise that tieflings are not a cause of evil or pain) and Gwen has a very peaceful, loving childhood. Still daddy's little girl growing up, but as she get's older she enjoys the grey hunt with her mother, and I just picture Gwen with a full body camoflage outfit on with only her eyes visible to give her the ability to blend in. She does enjoy combat sports a little, but is mostly 'dainty' and charming and friendly, Whitestone adore her. People start proposing marriage to her as well. Maybe she's a little chaotic and accepts a few, before ending them shortly after, but she would settle down and be adored by a loving partner. I think she could rule Whitestone in Cassandra's place on the council with Vesper--- I think Gwen would be a little naïve/easily swayed on her own, but would be a very dedicated ruler for the people and adored.

[Image description: A digital chibi drawing of the de Rolo siblings from Critical Role set against a royal blue background with gold stripes. The five siblings are arranged in a way that when they hold their arms out, they form a star shape. Going clockwise, first is Wolfe, then Vax'ildan Fredrick, then Vesper Elaina, then Gwendolyn, and finally Leona. All the siblings are wearing black sunglasses and smirking. Wolfe is a pale complexion half elf teen with short curly brown hair. He is wearing a two tone brown shirt over a white collared shirt. Vax'ildan Fredrick is a young pale complexion half elf boy with short curly brown hair. He is wearing a long sleeve blue shirt. Vesper Elaina is a young pale complexion half elf woman with long white hair in a braid. She is wearing a lilac dress with gold accents. Gwendolyn is a young red tiefling girl with long black hair in twin braids and small two pronged horns. She is wearing a poofy sleeved white dress. Leona is a pale complexion half elf teen with shoulder length curly brown hair. She is wearing a blue vest over a white collared shirt. End description.]
I was looking for a fun piece of fan art to do of at least one of the de Rolo kids in honor of episode 36 and was planning on doing something just simple and sweet, but then I found this pose ref and knew I had to do it. Perhaps I'll also draw their parents' reaction to this too lmao

And then my favourite, luckiest number - 13 for Elaina and the twins.
13. Shared blood.
Vampire bats are super social! They’ll bring blood back to their relatives who were too weak to go out slurping. They also bitch and argue a lot. Something fascinating and poetic, about sharing blood from others with those that share your blood on the inside. Same blood in the veins, same blood in the guts.
I have! so many feelings about Elaina, and what the twins share with her.
Vex 100% got her penchant for haggling from her mother, and learned most of her tricks from mother, too. Elaina was beautiful, had to have been to catch Syldor's eye, and as a working woman living on meager income she had to know how to barter and make every copper count.
I like to think a lot of Vax's humor and how he wears his heart on his sleeve is due to her. I see Elaina as an emotionally intelligent woman, who encouraged her children to talk through their feelings to help them understand them and work through conflicts (because as much as the twins love eachother, they were kids, they absolutely got into a stupid wailing fight every day for some reason or another and made up by sundown).
I don't think she was literate. Probably could sign her name and maybe do math, but that was about it. Just given her livelyhood and everything - but Byroden did have a school, and she made sure to send both kids to it. Vex has memories of being very small and helping her mother with bookkeeping, and eventually trying to teach her some too.
She absolutely made the kids toys - again, seamstress! - and taught them to be nimble and creative with their hands. I've talked about this before, but I think Vax took to it especially, and would make dollies and little ghosts out of scrap cloth just to keep his hands busy and feel close to her.
And one last one:
Elaina, once she figured out she was pregnant, set aside enough money for a child - she hadn't expected twins. It occurs to Vex, years later, how much easier her mother's life would have been if she'd only had one kid. Vex or Vax. They could have stayed with her. Everything would have been different.
