#Repost @egyptology_misr • • • • • • Luxor Museum Golden Flies of Queen Ahhotep I Necklace of Queen Ahhotep I, or Iah (“peace of the moon”), the mother of Ahmose I. The fly symbolized tenacity, this ceremonial necklace given as award for valor in battle. This necklace, with three pendants in the form of flies, was given to queen Ahhotep by her two sons Kamose and Ahmose in gratitude for her supportive role during the struggle for liberation against the Hyksos. The presence of this type of gold jewelry, which corresponds to a military decoration bestowed upon military leaders for their courage in the battle field, is unique in a queen’s collection. It is made of stylized flies formed of plaques of gold with two bulging eyes and an open work body. Second Intermediate Period, 17th Dynasty, ca. 1560-1530 BC. From Dra’ Abu el-Naga’, West Thebes. ‏‎One hundred years ago today King Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered in Luxor, Egypt. We celebrate this monumental discovery with a painting by Johannes Weninger, stonemason at the Epigraphic Survey, which depicts an Egyptian workman holding the “mannequin” of Tutankhamun (JE 60722), a life-sized model of a torso and the head of the king. In the words of the artist: “I found it inspiring to see a contemporary Egyptian carrying the bust of the king of his ancestors. I felt as if historic boundaries suddenly blurred and no longer existed. The photograph that was possibly taken by Arthur Mace and published in a recent book by Christina Riggs “Photographing Tutankhamun” served as the inspiration for this painting. It originally had more figures, but I choose to paint just one and the bust, to show the almost intimate relationship of a man and the bust of the king. By painting this scene, I wanted to capture the long-lasting relation between people who have lived, and live among Luxor’s ancient ruins, tombs, and temples. The people who are the descendants of Ancient Egypt. Looking at the various depictions of Tutankhamun I constantly see the faces of my colleagues and neighbors with whom I share my life in Luxor.”

One of the most popular pieces found in Tutankhamun’s tomb is his golden throne made of gilded wood and decorated with colored glass and semi-precious stones. The focal point of the throne is the decorated scene on the back. It shows the royal couple under the rays of the solar disk. Tutankhamun is seated on his throne and wears an elaborate headdress and jewlery. Tutankhamun’s wife, Ankhesenamun, is shown standing while applying perfumed ointments to his skin from a cup in her hand. The queen also wears an elaborate crown and jewelery.

Tutankhamun’s body was buried in a quartzite sarcophagus which held three coffins: the outer, middle and innermost. This one, the middle gilded coffin, is made of wood before being inlaid with multicolored glass. The king is shown crossing his arms, holding the crook and flail, while a band of hieroglyphs rests vertically on the lower part. Incredibly, Carter found this coffin covered by a red linen shroud topped with dry garlands of flowers.

Ushabti of King Tutankhamun This gilded ushabti is an image of the young king Tut wearing the Blue Khepresh Crown of ceremonies and processions and the uraeus. It is adorned with a broad collar cut in gold leaf and the two insignia of Osiris. The ushabti, or funerary, figures were intended to perform work in the place of the deceased in the afterlife. They were usually made of faience, wood, or pottery and were various sizes. They were divided according to their functions and to the Egyptian calendar as follows: 365 workmen, each for one day of the year, and 36 overseers, each as a chief of a week of ten days or ten workers. In the tomb of Tutankhamun, 12 supplementary foremen were added, one for each month, totaling 413. From the Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), Valley of the Kings, West Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. Bracelet of Queen Ahhotep, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty The tomb of queen Ahhotep was discovered in 1859 in Thebes. This bracelet, found inside the queen’s coffin, bears the name of her son on the clasp: “The son of Re, Ahmose, beloved of Re.” This bracelet is made of 30 rows in tiny beads shaped in a triangular pattern, 15 beads to each triangle. These numbers were very likely intentional, chosen to represent an association with the moon and the lunar calendar. One other marvelous discovery is that this armband is inscribed with the oldest written form (hieroglyphic sign) of the moon. #egyptology_misr #Egypte #Agypten #Egipt #Egipto #Egitto #Египет #مصر #मिस्र #エジプト #埃及 #Egypten #Visit_Egypt #discover_Egypt #Experience_Egypt #diving  #socialmedia #egypt #iloveegypt #luxor #karnak #mylifesamovie #mylifesatravelmovie #travelblog #travelblogger #solotravel #wanderlust #gopro #egyptology #ancientegypt (at Egypt) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeIyVP1skZ-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A spectacular drone shot of the Great Pyramid at Giza. Photo © Alexander Ladanivskyy. It was built over 4,600 years ago as an eternal house for King Khufu's body after death. By most estimates, over 2.3 million limestone blocks were used to construct this magnificent monument. The blocks were of varying sizes, some weighing as much as 20 tons. Several surveys conducted since the 19th century have proven that the pyramid is aligned to the cardinal points (north, south, east, and west) with remarkable accuracy. At an initial height of 147.5 meters, this feat of engineering remained the tallest man-made structure anywhere in the world for over 3,800 years. "The historical origin of geometry, which goes back to the Egyptians, supplies one of the many instances in which intellectual discoveries have grown from material needs. The annual floods of the Nile which fertilized the soil of Egypt brought trouble to landowners: the borderlines of their estates were destroyed every year and had to be reestablished by means of geometrical measurements. The geographical and social conditions of their country, therefore, compelled the Egyptians to invent the art of surveying. Geometry thus arose as an empirical science, whose laws were the results of observations. For instance, the Egyptians knew from practical experience that if they made a triangle the sides of which were respectively 3, 4, and 5 units long it would be a right triangle. The deductive proof for this result was provided much later by Pythagoras, whose famous theorem explains the Egyptian findings by the fact that the sum of the squares of 3 and 4 is equal to the square of 5." #egyptology_misr #Egypte #Agypten #Egipt #Egipto #Egitto #Египет #مصر #मिस्र #エジプト #埃及 #Egypten #Visit_Egypt #discover_Egypt #Experience_Egypt #diving  #socialmedia #egypt #iloveegypt #luxor #karnak #mylifesamovie #mylifesatravelmovie #travelblog #travelblogger #solotravel #wanderlust #gopro #egyptology #ancientegypt (at Great Sphinx of Giza) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVgEddSrFLt/?utm_medium=tumblr

A representation of the deity Hathor, seated on a throne, from a wall in the tomb (QV66) of Queen Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens near Luxor. Hathor is goddess of motherhood, beauty, love, female sexuality, pleasure, intoxication and ecstasy, as well as music and dance. She is also believed to assist deceased souls in their transition to the next world. Technically and stylistically the reliefs in QV66 are some of the finest in Egyptian art. #egyptology_misr #Egypte #Agypten #Egipt #Egipto #Egitto #Египет #مصر #मिस्र #エジプト #埃及 #Egypten #Visit_Egypt #discover_Egypt #Experience_Egypt #diving  #socialmedia #egypt #iloveegypt #luxor #karnak #mylifesamovie #mylifesatravelmovie #travelblog #travelblogger #solotravel #wanderlust #gopro #egyptology #ancientegypt (at Tomb of Nefertari مقبرة نفرتاري) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUDNPqgMkSR/?utm_medium=tumblr
