Phantom of the Opera: 25th Anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall

I do know that there were restrictions placed by the venue and the fact that it was televised but that's not gonna stop me from commenting on how lame they are.

Also **spoilers** we hate on Hadley Fraser's Raoul a lot in here. I know that much of this may not actually be Hadely Fraser's fault: the direction also has to be considered. This did come out a year after Love Never Dies premiered, and Raoul's character there is less than princely. It occurs to me that this may have impacted the direction/interpretation of his character here. Or not, who knows? All this to say, we're not actually hating on Hadley here, just this particular execution of the character. But also if you like this particular Raoul (not just Hadley Fraser), please do tell me why, I would be fascinated to know.

- Love how there's no grate so they have to have Erik hold her throat again so Raoul has a reason to sing "Free her!" As if Erik would ever put his hands on her throat in anger. And risk damaging her vocal chords? I don't think so

- The "Did you think that I would harm her?" line is harder to justify here. Which irks me because it makes me so weak every time I hear it

- Every time I watch the graveyard and the final lair I just want Christine to turn around and tell Raoul to shut up.

hello there!! how's your week been? any projects, playlists, books, recipes, etc that strike your fancy to ramble about?

i've been sick this week but i am slowly overthrowing the goop that has taken over my body. putting this together has been a nice distraction, so it got super long

Knitting

just before i got sick, i put a (mostly) handspun cardigan to block. the spinning of this was a tiny bit of a spite project, based on how frequently people talk about "muddy" colors in handspun in a disparaging way. as a brown lover, i took offense and decided to make a rainbow-but-brown cardigan incorporating every technique i could think of that people tell new spinners not to use because it will muddy their yarn. the last two pics gives a vague sense of how much optical color mixing you get from afar vs. up close, but the effect works better irl.

(fiber is all corriedale from Hello Yarn's fiber club)

i used 8+ years old leftover brown cascade eco for the cuffs, hem, pocket trim, and double-knit buttonband. this bit me in the ass, because i ran out with about 6" of band to go, and obviously couldn't get a dyelot match. thankfully, it was the button side of the band so the lighter bit will be mostly hidden, but i am pissed that i had to buy another 250g skein of yarn for a project where i was using up leftovers. also my button order got canceled so i need to source new ones. perhaps this project is slightly cursed. but i'll stash it away until autumn and it'll feel like i get a new sweater, just like i imagined, that i didn't even have to knit.

Spinning

currently working on two different spins, both for scarves.

on my spinolution wheel i have a brown-green-blue-white gradient destined to be woven, although i haven't been able to find the right weft yet. (fingering weight, plied, primarily nonsuperwash wool, pale pink that leans coral/orange...) i may end up dyeing it myself if i haven't found the right yarn by the time i get to weaving it.

i'm also spindling the finest yarn i possibly can, for some sort of garter stitch lace shawl situation. the fiber is a decently textured batt that includes silk nepps, so it will be gently tweedy. everyone who sees it says the fiber looks like bacon, but it's based on the dyer's cat, Mungo.

Weaving

before i got sick, my goal was to warp my loom for floral overshot kitchen towels, which is what everyone in my family will be getting as a winter holiday gift. maybe next week when i am more confident in my ability to count.

here's what's been stuck in my head lately for each language i speak. apparently i'm stuck in the 90's and very much the bug, not the windshield this week

Vittles

my go-to tea for the past 6 months has been a 50/50 mix of adagio's hazelnut and this baked apple tea. this started as an attempt to make the most autumnal tea possible (and tone down the cinnamon of the baked apple), but i recently committed to it enough to pre-mix a whole tin of it instead of just blending it in the infuser. i take it with homemade vanilla syrup and milk.

any day that i'm not eating çilbir i'm thinking about when i can have it again

i'm also obsessed with claire saffitz's gooey butter cake recipe (if you have ever wanted to just eat cake batter, this is the cake for you).

i have recently perfected my pretentious grilled cheese game with

some type of fruit preserve (i've used earl grey and apple jelly, apple butter, marmalade)

one slice of american cheese for melt

one slice of trader joe's scotch bonnet cheddar for heat

thick cut ham

homemade pickled red onions

serve with sliced cucumber or tomato sprinkled with cavender's seasoning, and/or apple slices, preferably arranged in a silly design so you feel like your adult self (sandwich) is reaching through time to shake your toddler self's (sides) hand

i've also been making what can only be described as a vaguely korean crunchwrap, which started as a fridge clean-out meal and has taken on a life of its own

tortilla chips for crunch (optional, i rarely have chips around)

daydreaming about an unfaithful recreation of my favorite summer drink from a closed cafe. their thing was orange juice, soda water, and jasmine syrup. i made jasmine syrup last summer and it turned out weirdly grassy and gross, so i'm going to try lavender or rosemary instead.

speaking of rosemary, i also have the stuff to make brown butter rosemary rice krispie treats! can't wait until i have the energy to both make and eat food that's interesting again. herby sweet treats my beloved <333

EGLE at youth fishing events this summer focusing on assessing fish contaminants

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) was awarded a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess contaminants in fish in several areas of Michigan -- with a particular focus on water bodies where youth fishing events have historically or are currently taking place.

Brandon Armstrong, EGLE aquatic biology specialist, filets a rainbow trout for a successful angler at the Wayne County Parks youth fishing derby at Waterford Bend Recreation Area in Northville. 

The primary goal of EGLE’s Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program is to collect data that are used to inform the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Eat Safe Fish guide. This grant helps EGLE meet this goal by providing funds to assess contaminants in fish from water bodies nearby communities that may be disproportionately impacted by environmental hazards, often referred to as Environmental Justice areas. EGLE will be attending youth fishing events near these areas to collect samples for contaminant monitoring.

Upcoming events include:

The Public Safety Youth Derby at Muskegon Lake in Muskegon, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15.

The Buell Lake Fish Camp at Buell Lake Park in Clio from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 16.

The Brighton Optimist Club Derby at Brighton Mill Pond in Brighton from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.

The Global Water Festival at Canal Park in Grand Rapids from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 29.

The Thread Lake Fish Camp at Thread Lake’s McKinley Park in Flint from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 11.

Events that already have taken place as part of the grant are:

Wayne County Parks Derby at Waterford Bend Park in Northville.

Saginaw County Parks’ Catch Me If You Can family fishing festival at Haithco Lake in Saginaw Charter Township.

The Hesse-Earl Youth Fishing Program at Hawk Island Park in Ingham County.

Fish will also be collected under this grant from additional water bodies located near Environmental Justice areas including  Reflection Pond in Riverview, Spring Valley Pond in Kalamazoo, Richmond Park Pond in Grand Rapids, Battjes Park Pond in Wyoming, Galloway Lake, Osmun Lake and the Clinton River in Pontiac, Muskegon Lake and Little Black Creek in Muskegon, WmP Thompson Pond in Port Huron, Carpenter Lake in Southfield, the St. Joseph River and the Paw Paw River in Benton Harbor, and the St. Marys River in Sault Ste Marie.

Vintage Earl Review

With all the Earl love going around I did some digging and found my handwritten notes from when I saw him in 2005! It was my first time seeing POTO on the West End and it was amazing 😍

The performance was June 14, 2005 (evening) with Earl Carpenter, Rachel Barrell, and Oliver Thornton. I’m not positive as to the rest of the cast other than Rohan Tickell as Piangi, since I went back to see Earl again the next night and Rohan was on as u/s Phantom 😭 (I did enjoy Rohan, though!) The first few groups of notes are in order then it starts to skip around as I remembered things. I originally posted a full review on PFN from an internet café AKA a computer in a McDonald’s you could rent to use the internet 😅 Transcription below the cut!

13: what's something that made you smile today?

The Earl Carpenter fan club going insane on my dash about their fave being cast as the Phantom in PotO <3

23: what's your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations?

Realistically? Most often I find myself all stressed out over nothing and/or being so goddamn exhausted I can get nothing done, not even fun things. It's been a rough couple of years.

Ideally, however? Drawing something fun while watching a nice video essay or something in the background, or maybe really getting into the zone and writing something.

57: go listen to bohemian rhapsody. how did it make you feel? did you dramatically reenact the lyrics?

100% honest? Chill but also a bit bored. I've never been super into this song, personally. So no dramatic reenacting here, just some slight jamming along. Please don't cancel me over this opinion, everybody.

For the Earl Carpenter Club members. Been getting absolutely destroyed by my friends for fancying Earl as Phantom. Apparently my taste in men is described by “tall thin maybe a bit “lived in the sewer” men who have lots of theatrics”. Worst thing was that I really couldn’t defend myself lol
