before the start of this season i went through all the summaries of the reboot eps of doctor who to write out descriptions & encourage my friend to watch some eps with me. 6 months later and i think i’m pretty funny so if u want some recs here it is:

11 + AMY 5x01- i have a soft spot for this it was my first proper dw ep aw aliens invade hospital and the doctor doesn’t have his tardis or screwdriver so it’s just him running around a lot 5x02 - again soft spot whales driving spaceship britain or something but cute adventure 5x04-05 - the weeping angels get more development p cool 5x07 - THIS IS THE ONE JACOB MEANT where they’re trapped in the tardis and a dream and stuff i remember this being good 5x11 - james corden and matt smith have banter for 40 mins 5x12-13 MY FAVE DOUBLE EP stonehenge and the tardis exploding and timeloops n stuff wow love it 6x00 - literally the only good xmas ep dw has its so pure inspired by scrooge n that wow love it 6x04 - iconic ep where the tardis is a woman bit confusing n weird tho 6x10 - good ep for amy n rory in space quarantine 6x11 - good ep for amy n the doctor, minotaurs n david walliams 6x12 - james corden and matt smith have more bants this time theres cybermen 7x01 - jenna is an absolute babe and defeats the daleks 7x05 - iconic ep where the weeping angels take amy n rory to their exit

11 + CLARA 7x00 - another bad xmas ep but clara is in victorian london so 7x12 - abandoned space fairground w cybermen idk bit weird but i remember enjoying 7x13 - iconic ep where clara throws herself into the doctors timeline which leads into iconic 50th anniversary ep

12 + CLARA 8x03 - robin hood defeats aliens 8x06 - good ep for the doctor n clara but literally don’t remember the plot hes the school caretaker or smth 8x07 - this is the one where the moon is an egg 8x08 - the orient express in space w a killer mummy i remember this being intense 9x05 - masie williams saves her viking village from aliens 9x06 - literally don’t remember the plot but masie williams is immortal and is now named Me 9x11 - bit tedious at start but blew my mind at end good use of timeloops but sadly no clara 9x12 - i just remember crying i love clara 9x00 - idk what happens confusing xmas special but i love river song so

#I mean I sort of dropped it at 8x07 so maybe there's been decent non M/offat stuff in the meantime #but I don't think so #( ;; behind the writing pen )#STG IF THEY CHANGE SHOWRUNNER AND I STILL CANNOT WATCH DW I'M FIGHTING THE WHOLE BBC!!!

Kill the Moon Review [Contain Spoilers of Series 8]

Keyword: Decision

“We have a terrible decision to make. It’s an uncertain decision and we don't have a lot of time. We can kill this creature or we can let it live. We don't know what it’s going to do, we don't know what’s going to happen when it hatches. If it will hurt us, help us, or just leave us alone.”

“The whole future path. Whatever future humanity might have depends upon the choice that is made right here and right now.”

Followed Time Heist which indicated the “sameness” between one and the other (an early version of Flatline in which Clara and the Doctor shared the same identity) and The Caretaker which indicated the differences and conflicts between Clara’s two worlds, an impossible choice arose in this episode.

On the text level, this decision was a dilemma between “kill the moon to save ‘humanity’ (the human race)” and “save the moon to remain ‘humanity’ (humane)”. While on the subtext level, it’s a stand-in of Clara’s personal choice between the Doctor (fantasy and fairy tale) and Danny (normal life). Furthermore, this episode also subtextually implied Clara’s awareness of her feeling toward the Doctor. Thought their relationship seemed broken on the text level, it’s actually turned into a very emotional and deep affection to the extent that she was terrified by its unforeseen and uncontrollable nature.

1. Between Clara’s moon-choice on the text level and her personal-choice on the subtext level, here’re some stand-ins:

(1). Humanity and the earth: Clara's normal life.

(2). The moon: Clara and the Doctor’s relationship, which wasn't breaking apart, but hatching. (It would be further discussed in the end of this post.)

(3). The creature: Those wonders and amazing things. Their adventure life together. Very similar with (2). (moon as their relationship), and the Doctor also said “That is the moon.”, but the separation here could make things more clear in some ways:

It seemed a threat to humanity and the earth, which stood in the normal life. For her, the life with the Doctor was somehow damaging her normal life. (cf. Her protest “is there any other way you can make this any more surreal than it already is?" in Listen)

It seemed a threat to the moon itself. Their relationship was somehow heading to an unhealthy way in the process of those adventures. (cf. “I don't hate you. I could never hate you. But I can't do this any more. Not the way you do it." in Mummy on the Orient Express)

To prevent the earth (normal life) from its potential harm. They had to kill the creature (adventure life) even in expense of the moon (their relationship). And as part of Clara’s struggle, Captain Lundvik actually said that she loved moon and had dreamed about coming to it.

(4). Lundvik and Courtney: Clara's wish to remain her normal life and her wish to keep her life with the Doctor.

(5). The decision: Clara’s choice between her two lives. Her choice might lead to a totally different future, but she couldn't predict the outcomes of each choice. And her delay would cause certain price. (cf. She lost loved ones in the beginning of Dark Water and in the end of Death in Heaven.)

2. The moon-choice was a stand-in of Clara’s personal-choice. Take that into consideration, no wonder she should be the one who chose. Here’re some people Clara asked for help:

(1). The Doctor, who refused to make the decision for human (Clara) and stated that he didn't know about the outcomes of each choice.

I believed he didn't lie here. He really couldn't tell the future of the moon (the future of their relationship), because whatever happened to the moon (their relationship) hadn’t been decided yet.

And it’s a decision that he couldn’t make for her, because every time when it came to their relationship, it was Clara that took the lead. (cf. Her “I will smile first and then you know it’s safe to smile." and his "If you want to be." in Deep Breath)

How the camera switched its focus during the Doctor’s I-cannot-see-every-moment-in-time speech also reinforced the idea that it’s Clara’s choice, not his. When he said “Little eye-blinks. They didn't look the same as other things. They're not clear. They're fuzzy. They're grey.”, the focus was in the Doctor with Clara in the background. When he came to “I can't tell what happens to the moon, because whatever happens to the moon hasn't been decided yet.”, the focus switched to Clara. Then he said “And it’s going to be decided here and now.”, the camera was focus in Clara and then switched to Captain Lundvik.

(2). Time itself, which was unreliable.

Clara had an absolute belief in time. If she saw something happened in the timeline, it ought to happen. And she let that influence the way she thought, decided, and acted. She believed she had a future with Danny. She believed the earth wouldn't be destroyed by the solar flare. Remember how she became the impossible girl, she chose to jump into the Doctor’s timeline in The Name of the Doctor, because “This is what I've already done… I’m the impossible girl, and this is why.”

However, this time the time itself wasn't on her side. The Doctor couldn't give her information. He even asked her to take the stabilisers off her bike. All these enlarged her uneasiness of things out of control and her scare of doing things wrong. (cf. She asked the Doctor if she did things alright eagerly in Cold War)

When the situation came to her responsibility to choose whether to kill the moon/creature or not (to stop their relationship and life together or not, in the light of its potential damage toward her normal life.), she was panicking. Especially after the Doctor’s "I am not your boyfriend." confession in Deep Breath, and his refusal to help in Kill the Moon. How could she deal with their hatching relationship alone? It was an uncertain decision, and she couldn't decide.

(3). Lundvik and Courtney, each represented different standpoints. They're both solid characters with their own personalities, however, their attitudes toward the decision did echoed with parts of Clara's contradictory thoughts.

Courtney didn't fancy time travel that much (unlike her teacher), but she would like to go to an adventure for feeling special. (cf: Clara's "Don't you dare lump me in with the rest of all the little humans that...." in Kill the Moon and "Travelling with you made me feel really special." in Death in Heaven) She was quite annoying and naive, but could be kind and brave in critical moments.

Courtney thought the creature was the "life here... just next door.", and was absolutely against the killing (no way to stop the life and relationship with the Doctor). It didn't really bother her that the earth (normal life) might be destroyed. She seemed to have a unreasonable faith in both worlds' coexist (which Clara didn't).

Lundvik was bossy and a control freak. She had a strong will to fulfill her aim. Sometimes too strong that she chose to repress or overlook her feelings, just to be "on balance". She would choose to blow her dreams up, in order to save the earth (normal life). For her, the normal life was the only thing real and was already vulnerable.

"Let me tell you something. You want to know what I look back from being in space? The atmosphere, that is paper thin. That is the only thing that saves us all from death. Everything else, the stars, the blackness. That's all dead. Sadly, that is the only life any of us will ever know."

When they're discussing, Lundvik asked if Clara wanted to have babies (one of the steps of "normal" life planning) to convince her to kill the moon (the relationship with the Doctor) and save the earth (the normal life with Danny).

Worth to mention that her attitude toward the moon, unlike that toward the creature, had been changed during this episode. At the very first, Lundvik was trying to save the moon (the relationship).

Clara: How can the moon die, though? Doctor: Everything does, sooner or later. Lundvik: Can we save it?

(YMMV: Clara asked if their relationship was heading to the end. Might be a delay discussion from the moment 12th regenerated. The Doctor answered that everything had its end. And Lundvik, represented parts of Clara's thoughts, was the one who wanted to save it.)

However, when the situation came to the decision between the relationship and the normal life, Lundvik chose the latter, in expense of the former. "All my life I've dreamed about coming here. But this is how it has to end." (YMMV: All her ever wanted was the Doctor. But he's impossible and she had to end their relationship to save her normal life.)

And in the end of Kill the Moon, she thanked Clara for "Giving her moon back." (YMMV: Despite all of her considerations, "on balance", and "get in control" things, her true feelings were toward the moon, her childhood dream.)

3. Moon as the stand-in of their relationship: "It isn't breaking apart. It is hatching."

Their relationship was different from the 11th/Clara era, but the bond was still there. Clara might think it wasn't a romantic one anymore after 12th's "I am not your boyfriend." confession in Deep Breath. However, during their getting-to-know-each-other-again process, something deeper and unexpected happened.

"Okay. So the moon has never been the moon?"

"No, no, no, no. It’s never been dead. It’s just taking a long time to come alive."

Clara didn't foresee this. When it suddenly popped out and she was urged to choose, she was frightened. She couldn't afford to make it wrong.

Danny was absolutely NOT the Doctor's substitute. (If Clara wanted one, she would choose the history teacher.) He represented the perfect boyfriend in the normal life, a world that Clara wanted as much as the world with the Doctor. (And the normal life was never the substitutes of her fairy tales.) That's why Clara would suffer that much when these two collided.

What Lundvik said during the moon-conversation indicated Clara's nervous and worries about her awareness of her feelings and the hatching relationship. "It's not going to just stop being there... a gigantic creature forcing its way out. And when it does, which is going to be pretty damn soon, there are going to be huge chunks of the moon heading right for us, like whatever killed the dinosaurs, only ten thousand times bigger."

How about the Doctor's POV? He did said the creature is the moon, and "I think that it’s unique. I think that’s the only one of it’s kind in the universe. I think that, that is…Utterly beautiful." Just compare this with what Peter said about the relationship of Clara and the Doctor.

Clara pressed the bottom and saved the creature/the moon, but she failed to do the same in her own personal-choice. She lied and delayed that impossible choice. She would continued paying her price. However, on the bright side, in the end of Kill the Moon, when Clara asked the Doctor what would happened after her choice. The Doctor said that humankind "spreads its way through the galaxy to the very edges of the universe. And it endures till the end of time." Let's just hope their relationship would do the same.

我/非我、鏡像與宿敵：12th Doctor自我追尋的敘事完結 (8x12)

從重生那一刻起，12th Doctor就處在恆久的自我質疑中。他懷疑自己過去漫長歲月的所作所為、擔憂自己是否能算好人，並害怕可能的答案。直到Missy/Master送上絕對的權力，將他的自我追尋推向最終完結。

給一個好人絕對的權力，他將不愁沒有敵人可殺。

"Give a good man firepower, and he'll never run out of people to kill."

Missy/Master的話推了最後一把，讓他從一整季以來的拉扯中解脫。不要將自己侷限在這樣靜態、貼標籤式的、非黑即白的問題中。執著認定自己為善，可能導向絕對的優越感與道德危險，似乎好人就具有干涉他人未來、生命的權力，而這絕非12th Doctor想要扮演的角色(參見8x07中，他並不想為人類決定未來)。他不是傳統意義上的英雄，也不再是過去幾任化身所背負的彌賽亞、拯救者形象。

我不是好人，但也不是壞人。我不是英雄，也絕對不是地球的總統。不，我也不是一呼百諾的將軍。你知道我是誰嗎？我只是一個無知的人，在一個藍色盒子裡旅行，帶著一把音速起子。走走逛逛、隨手幫忙，在過程中學習。

"I am not a good man! I am not a bad man. I am not a hero. And I'm definitely not a president. And no, I'm not an officer. Do you know what I am? I am an idiot, with a box and a screwdriver. Just passing through, helping out, learning."

明白自己始終是無知的(對自己的、他人的、世界的本質。對善惡、情感、關係。對自己所作的選擇及可能招致的後果)，並永不放棄探索、理解、與學習。他在此處的領悟扣回第八季持續呈現的「Doctor/同伴」做為「學生/老師」象徵。這也是為什麼，在文本層次上，Clara被設定成一位老師。而在潛文本層次上，Clara被設置為Doctor的鏡子(他的"鏡像自我")。從8x01中，Doctor介紹Clara是他的"Not-Me One" 開始，她映照出他的一切，無論好、壞。她協助他經歷自我懷疑、自我厭惡的過程。在這樣的意義上，當然最終反派必須是Master，Doctor的宿敵(archenemy)與黑暗自我(dark-self)，當然Missy/Master必須試著說服Doctor他倆並無不同，唯有在這個「我」與「非我」的對照拉扯中，Doctor的自我認同才得以獲得敘事上的完結。(這也是對8x02中Doctor對Rusty說「直到遇見你們我才明白自己是誰，Doctor不是Daleks ("And then I met you lot and I understood who I was. The Doctor was not the Daleks.")」的一個召回(callback))

在本季後半，Clara因為不可能抉擇(the impossible choice)的影響變得脆弱，12th Doctor則相對成長與逐漸穩固。此外，他��Clara身上所學到的良善與同理也逐漸在性格裡生根，從8x07理性有餘卻斷然無情的「人類的未來只能妳們自己決定 ("The Earth isn't my home. The moon's not my moon. Sorry.")」，經過8x08以時間領主之身容納人類情感的「妳所有的創傷、哀痛與怨懟，現在都是我的了 ("All of that is your grief, your trauma, your resentment. And now. It's mine.)」，到8x09重負Doctor之名挺身阻止怪物的「這個地方是被我所保護的 ("This plane is protected. I am the Doctor.")」，以及8x10即便看似終局依舊希望為地球做些什麼的「這也是我珍視的世界，我與妳一同行走、呼吸相同的空氣("This is my world, too. I walk your earth, I breathe your air.")」，經歷這一切人與人之間界線的重新定義與劃分，最終在8x11中，即便遭受背叛、感到傷心憤怒，他也已足夠強壯，得以在關係中感受、卻超越那些情緒與投射，進而全然理解、接受關係中受損的另一半，做為Clara的支撐，就如同她在8x01時所做的那樣。對我來說，12th Doctor性格中最美好的那部份，正是能為了重要他人自我反思、調整的能力與意願。

人生往往是艱困的，有時候放在面前的都是壞選項。但當我們必須從中選擇時，始終銘記每個選擇都會招致特定的後果，可能會傷害自我、也可能會傷害他人。無論如何，都不要為自己貼上特定的標籤，並讓它定義我們的所作所為。

而這天正是Doctor的生日，敘事上的必然。從重生那一刻起便如新生嬰孩徬徨不安的Doctor，在這天自我終能暫時安頓。雖然並非她/他所預期，但這才是Missy/Master送上的真正大禮。他的新生之日。
