GEORGE IV MONUMENT ERECTED IN 1823
King George arrived in Ireland on his 59th birthday in August 1821 and it was expected that he would arrive in Dun Laoghaire. I think that it was spelled 'DunLeary' at the time. But for some reason [related to too much alcohol] he first landed in Howth

Seven Walks in Seven Days – Day 1. Great South Wall Walk
This is a beautiful coastal walk that starts in Irishtown, just 2km from Dublin City Centre. From there you can walk 4km out into Dublin Bay along the Great South Wall until you reach the Poolbeg Lighthouse at the end.
It can be tricky to figure out how to get there. You start at the park in Irishtown/end of Sandymount Strand and just follow the trail around the coastline from there. After around 2kms, you’ll get to the start of the South Wall and continue another couple of kilometers along it to get to the lovely red lighthouse.
There are stunning views of the Poolbeg Chimneys, Dublin Bay, Howth Head, Dun Laoghaire Harbour and the Dublin and Wicklow mountains beyond. The surface can be a bit uneven along the sea wall at times, so be sure to wear walking shoes (not heels!). It’s also a great spot for bird watching if that’s your vibe.

Dublin & Kingstown Revisited
Dublin & Kingstown Revisited
In mid-October, I traveled the length of the old Dublin and Kingstown route to meet with my friends in Dun Laoghaire.
The Dublin and Kingstown Railway was opened in 1834 between Westland Row (today Pearse Station) and the harbour in Kingstown (now called Dun Laoghaire).
It was the first railway in Ireland and often claimed as the world’s first suburban railway.
Today, this route is operated as…

I posted a picture of the RNLI's Anna Livia lifeboat at Dun Laoghaire a few days ago but the picture was meant to be an animation I made with the sea moving around it. I'll have to post it again when the gif is working right because I really like it, and I'll have to put a separate post on groundhogday.com about the RNLI. For now, I'll just share some of the other pictures I've taken of the RNLI in action. (at Dun Laoghaire Harbour) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeeRyeurIew/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

QUEENS ROAD
The route required the implementation of a one-way system for vehicles on Seapoint Avenue, Queen’s Road, Windsor Terrace and Marine Parade
I TOOK A WALK ALONG QUEENS ROAD A FEW DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2020 – DUN LAOGHAIRE
Along this road at least one traditional “cabman’s shelter” survives – these were small buildings built for the drivers of horse-drawn taxis. I always believed that there were three but it would appear that two may be replicas.
A segregated cycle route, from Blackrock to the Forty Foot in Sandycove has be installed…
