Kiyoshi: Good morning, sleepyhead. Alfie: Mmm... Five more minutes, please. K: (chuckles and kisses Alfie) What about no? A: (sighs happily) I guess I can see your point. No more sleep. K: Sleep well? A: Uh uh. Except for the human-shaped radiator who got me nearly overheating in the middle of the night. Had some good dream too. K: Oh yeah? Was I in it? A: Of course. Remember when you first came to my house to live? What we did? K: Pillow fight? A: Nah, after. In the corridor, of all places. K: Oh. Those promise rings were so bad quality, I really need to find replacements. Nickel-less, this time. A: In my dream, you did. With the real thing. K: You dreamt of us... getting married? A: Yes. No. Getting engaged. But, yeah. K: I promise you, we'll do that some time. A: Yeah? K: Yes. You and me? It's forever. God, I love you so much. A: Love you too.

Nova and her friends had a bonfire party at the bluffs for the first day of winter!
Whilst the others were (stupidly) paddling in the freezing water, Nova and Seb were able to chat by themselves. During the conversation he asked her if she would go to the winter dance with him to which she said yes, obviously.
The night ended with everyone around the bonfire, and Pierre trying to impress the girls by doing trick slides??

@universal-legacy asked: . . . There's a young man with fiery red hair, and bright red eyes reaching out and patting the head of Blanche, appreciative of the Artic Fox animatronic's presence. Unprompted
The motions that had been committed to the mechanical being made it blink, before moving to look over toward the source of the patting. Once the other was identified within her files, she found herself smiling with her faceplates. "Welcome back, Beryl. How was your night? I assume it was good, given the smile on your face."
She wasn't sure why he looked the way he did, but as long as he was pleased, that was what mattered, considering everything. "We have a long day ahead of us, there is a party scheduled within the Center that will begin at three in the afternoon. This room will once again be the designated safe space for the complex during those hours. Please make sure that the kits for overstimulated and panicking children are ready at a moment's notice."

On January 7th, we venerate Ancestor & Hoodoo Saint, Auntie Zora Neale Hurston on her 133rd birthday (updated 2024). 🎉
Tumblr media
Novelist, Anthropologist, Folklorist, Scholar, Vodou initiate & Historian, Zora Neale Hurston's legacy is forever cemented in Hoodoo Culture (and beyond) as the masterful wordsmith who cast a shining light on black excellence in all everyday forms/spaces, our ATR roots, & the preservation of Black Voices during the prime of the Harlem Renaissance.
Auntie Zora was born in Notasulga, AL and raised on 5 acres of land in Eatonville, FL by her preacher-father and free-spirited mother ; in what would be the first all-Black township in the country. After the shattering loss of her mother, Zora turned up in Baltimore, MD where she presented herself as a 16 year old (10 years her junior) in order to access free public school education resources; thereby finishing school. From then on, Zora lived her life presenting herself as 10 years younger than she actually was. She'd go on to graduate from Barnard College in 1928.
She published several novellas & articles, including "Mules & Men"; a collection of Hoodoo Folklore. She entered the zenith of her career in the late 30s/40s after publishing her masterworks: "Their Eyes Were Watching God", "Tell My Horse", "Moses, Man of the Mountain", & an anthropological study on Hatian Vodou .After publishing her autobiography, "Dust Tracks on a Road, "Auntie Zora finally received the public recognition & literary respect that was long overdue. Despite her successes, and unprecedented contributions in classic literature & anthropology, Zora never received the financial contributions that her work so deserved.
Zora Neale Hurston passed away; penniless, alone, & drifting into obscurity. Friends and supporters from near and far raised $600 for her funeral service and burial. She was buried in an unmarked grave, in a segregated section, at the Garden Of Heavenly Peace Cemetery in Fort Pierce, FL. Over a decade later, in 1973 the Great Alice Walker found the unmarked grave and ordered a headstone to be placed on it; engraved with, "Genius Of The South" in Zora's honor. It remains in place today.  “Let no Negro celebrity, no matter what financial condition they might be in at death, lie in inconspicuous forgetfulness. We must assume the responsibility of their graves being known and honored.” - Zora Neale Hurston to W.E.B. Dubois Auntie Zora wanted to be remembered & demanded that the same honor and respect be given unto her peers & others. Never forget the infectious voice that defined & defied, inspired & struck fear in many hearts of her time & after. We pour libations & give 💐 today as we celebrate Auntie Zora for her enigmatic spirit, ancestral wisdom, labor of love for Hoodoo Folklore, & for the seeing the beauty in the dark, sometimes solemn, corners in Black Culture. Let her studies continue to inform our own. Let her spark a fire in us to reconnect to our roots & grow within our lineages.
Offering suggestions: money, music, read/share her work, libations of water, & flowers.
‼️Note: offering suggestions are just that & strictly for veneration purposes only. Never attempt to conjure up any spirit or entity without proper divination/Mediumship counsel.‼️

“DuBois pointed out that in order to fully abolish the oppressive conditions produced by slavery, new democratic institutions would have to be created. Because this did not occur; black people encountered new forms of slavery—from debt peonage and the convict lease system to segregated and second-class education. The prison system continues to carry out this terrible legacy. It has become a receptacle for all of those human beings who bear the inheritance of the failure to create abolition democracy in the aftermath of slavery. And this inheritance is not only born by black prisoners, but by poor Latino, Native American, Asians, and white prisoners. Moreover, its use as such a receptacle for people who are deemed the detritus of society is on the rise throughout the world.” ― Angela Y. Davis, Abolition Democracy: Beyond Empire, Prisons, and Torture

A floorboard creaked beneath the carpet, and Piers leapt a mile in the air, heart racing. Whipping around, they scanned the hallway behind them. No one else was there. [...] Their last shred of common sense screamed at them to get out of there, that they’d seen too much, that someone was- The cold metal of a pistol pressed against their skull.

Synopsis, Characters, and more below the cut!
Synopsis
Although originally planned as a standalone novel, NYTF has now expanded into three separate books: Knight of Dawn, Queen of Noon, and King of Dusk. There's an additional collection of short stories/untold stories planned as well, tentatively titled Pawn of Midnight.
Knight of Dawn
Piers Hall is the newly crowned monarch of the post-apocalyptic State of Georgia, after their mother, Queen Adele, was declared unfit to rule. Despite meaning well, they find themself unprepared for the role, especially as political rivals, like North Carolina’s President René Dubois and Councilmember Shanna Miles, close in on their tail, seemingly threatening to topple their rule. When various palace staff start to show where their real loyalties lie, it seems like Grady Yensey, Commander of the Royal Guard and their closest friend, is the only one they can trust. Piers and Grady must scramble to uncover the truth behind Queen Adele’s questionable associates, Piers’ missing past, and President Dubois’ shady activities
Characters
Monarch Jillian "Piers" Hall (they/them)
Piers (19) is a primary character within Not Your Typical Fairytale. They are the newly crowned Monarch of the State of Georgia, a title inherited from their adoptive mother, Queen Adele Hall. After having studied and trained for the role for years, Piers knows exactly what they have to do, but struggles following through in practice. In political and personal matters, Piers is extremely manipulative and controlling, yet somehow appears personable (and the textbook presentation of ADHD). They regularly get in the way of their own objective to fix what Adele broke. Adele's legacy leaves them with a lot to work through, both politically and personally, driving most of their internal conflicts and growth. Through all this, their long time best friend, Grady, sticks by their side no matter what. They would do anything for her, knowing she'd do the same for them. As the story progresses, and their own paranoia about the situations surrounding them and their past builds, Grady becomes the one of the few people they perceive they can trust.
Commander Grady Juniper Yensey (she/her)
Grady (22) is the other primary character in Not Your Typical Fairytale. She's the youngest ever Commander of the Royal Guard Special Operations, and she will do anything to keep her prestigious military position. She can be extremely tight laced and controlling when on duty, fearing failure and the fact no one will take her seriously. Grady feels an obligation to do her best, and refuses to accept anything less from herself, often leading her to break down when alone, unsure of her purpose when not on duty. When with friends, she is notably softer and kinder, but pushes them to achieve at the highest level like herself. The only thing she cares about more than her job is her best friend, Piers. The two are inseparable, and they are one of few people Grady feels she can be vulnerable around. As Piers' life is put in danger through the story, Grady makes sure to always cover their back and keep them from harm, knowing they'll always do the same for her.
Palace Residents
Queen Adele Hall (she/her)
Adele is Piers' adoptive mother, and can be credited for most of how Piers behaves. As the former Queen of the State of Georgia, Adele stripped many social programs and left the state in ruin, for seemingly no rhyme or reason. She bullied and manipulated the Council to her whims, a trait which Piers has somewhat picked up on much to the dismay of the Councilors. Her personal life was fraught with grief and poor life decisions, which is oftentimes credited as the reason for some of her behavior. Piers and Adele's relationship is strained, as Piers recognizes the negative effect their mother had on their people and on themself, but simultaneously idolizes her as a mother figure, as they never knew their biological parents. Adele isn't present for most of NYTF, but her presence is felt throughout.
HoPS Marcella "Marcie" Olson (she/her)
Marcie is Adele's closest friend and the Head of Palace Staff, a role she's served in since she was 18, after the death of her mother. Of all the characters, she is the one who has truly seen the good and horrible Adele's entire life, but also tends to ignore Adele's faults at the same time. Marcie is a very motherly character, having two kids of her own with Gavin Johnson (Gretel and Hansel Olson) and practically raising Grady and Piers as well. She ALSO tends to be pushy, controlling over Palace matters, and constantly talks down to others. Marcie just wants everything to stay the same, and to keep her own family safe, which occasionally puts herself and Piers at odds. However, when it comes down to it, she cares about Piers and wants to see them succeed.
Dr. Charoen Panya (xe/xir)
Dr. Panya is the very well-trusted Royal Physician and one of Adele's old friends. During xir youth in Athens, Dr. Panya studied to become a medical doctor, before falling in with the wrong crowd. After being given a second chance by Adele, xe has never looked back and faithfully served the Royal family and other high ranking officials since. Dr. Panya tends to be erratic and reclusive, confining xirself to the basement of the Palace. If not actively providing medical care, xe can be found dissecting the corpses of plague victims, searching for a more accessible cure. The only person xe allows to assist them is Marlowe, who xe has bonded with over the past ten years. Piers trusts Dr. Panya to an extent... but in the way two crazy people do.
René Dubois (he/him)
René is the Former President of North Carolina and an old friend of Adele's, and he arrives at the Palace near the beginning of the first book. Having never met him before, Piers immediately has suspicions, especially as he seems to know Marcie, Adele, and other palace residents very well, despite none of them ever mentioning him. Those suspicions grow into outright paranoia and hatred as he plays their exact game back at them, refusing to answer questions and seemingly turning their allies against them. René, like Piers, is manipulative and controlling of others, although he hides it better, which has served him well in his career. During his time in North Carolina, he served as both Senator for several years and President for seven years, before resigning. He keeps his personal life private, and has no family he mentions, besides his husband, Darcey.
Gretel Olson (she/her)
Gretel is the oldest of Marcie and Gavin's kids and works as a pastry chef in the Palace's kitchens. She has a similar attitude to Grady, constantly pushing herself to be her best, but takes care of herself better and knows her limits. While Marcie desires that Gretel follow in her footsteps, Gretel doesn't care to become HoPS, instead setting her eyes on becoming the Executive Chef of the Palace's kitchens, like her maternal grandfather. This often puts her at odds with her overbearing mother, a situation her father, Gavin, is not willing to get involved in. While friends with both Grady and Piers, she's definitely sister-close with Grady, and not so much with Piers. Gretel is romantically involved with Marlowe, although no one besides Dr. Panya knows (unbeknownst to them).
Hansel Olson (he/him)
Hansel is the youngest child of Marcie and Gavin. He loves fashion and currently works as a tailor, serving primarily Piers but also others within the Palace. Despite how much he loves his role, Hansel has his sights set on a bigger one: Head of Palace Staff. Marcie refuses to see him potentially fulfilling the role, instead placing her hopes in Gretel. Most characters, including Marcie, see him as ditzy, disorganized, and too childish to make any real impact. Piers, however, sees themself in him, and recognizes Hansel as both a trustworthy friend and a valuable asset to their information gathering, entrusting him to listen in on whatever is being said while working with the Councilors and other political leaders within the palace. Hansel doesn't have any friends beyond Piers, although he was the only one of this generation (Piers, Gretel, Grady, Hansel) to attend a public school (in the Royal District).
Royal Guard
Captain Charles "Gavin" Johnson (he/him)
Gavin is the Captain of the Royal Guard, a rank he achieved after his brother, David, became Councilor. After years of being under his brother, both in rank and academics, Gavin is glad to finally be able to be himself and show what he's capable of. He's very warm and fatherly, but also knows what he's doing and when to act, making him a great leader. Most people in the Palace love him and he's easy to get along with, compared to most of the other people here. His relationship with Marcie can get rocky at times, as they really are friends not lovers, but in the end, they would die for each other. Gavin is the father of Gretel and Hansel, and the adoptive father of Grady.
Commander Mateo Lopez (he/him)
Mateo is the Commander of the Royal Navy, and quite possibly the only person who doesn't like Gavin. As the longest-serving officer of the group, Mateo thinks he should have become the next Captain, and was betrayed when David, his close friend, promoted Gavin instead of him. Despite all this, Mateo and Gavin have continued to hook up for the past 15 years, behind the backs of the other officers. (Marcie knows. She knows everything.) Mateo ranked out of the Academy at 19, and quickly worked his way up to the Navy Commander due to his excellent strategical abilities. Mateo is one of very few characters here to not be born in a Zone, having come from the Brunswick settlement, a daughter settlement of the Savannah Zone of Safety. He can be difficult and a bit of an asshole. That's it.
Commander Giaan Sei (he/xe)
Giaan is the Commander of the Royal Army and Councilor Adel's husband. He's a bit of a silly guy but he knows what he's doing and can be trusted to stay loyal to the Palace. He followed a more traditional military track, ranking out of the Academy when he was 20 and working his way up to serve as the Army Commander. He and Nyla have three kids, the youngest of which just ranked out of the Academy and is a low-level Army officer. He and Nyla also took part in raising Grady when they were around the Palace, as they are the only high ranking Palace figures to live outside the Palace (in the Royal district of ATLZoS).
Commander Bexley Benjamin (he/him)
Bex is the Commander of Royal Guard Perimeter Operations, the least prestigious of the four commanders. Nevertheless, Bex does his best to keep the seven Perimeters of the Zones up and running, as the first line of defense against invading forces and mindless plague victims. He is most often in Command Central, sitting cross-legged in his rolling chair and constantly monitoring all the Perimeters. The other three commanders and Gavin swear that the man never sleeps. Bex has an off and on relationship with Meghan, which is known by the other commanders and Gavin. Piers isn't so sure what to think of Bex, but throughout the story he proves himself to be a vital player in Piers' game.
Darcey Olson (he/him)
Darcey is a former Navy officer, and now serves as a military advisor. He grew up in the Palace with his older sister Marcie, but was unjustifiably blamed for the death of their parents when he was 13. He grew angry and violent, often lashing out physically. David pushed him into enrolling in the Academy when he turned 16. Darcey turned his life around and ranked out in a record year and a half. He served under Xavier as Captain, before fleeing when he was 25 due to an "incident". Once arriving in North Carolina, he established a new military career for himself, eventually meeting René thanks to Marcie's intervention. The two have been inseparable since, with Darcey serving as René's Secretary of Defense. Softspoken and kind-hearted, you'd never know what kind of past Darcey has.
The Council
Councilor Shanna Miles of Savannah (she/they)
Miles is the Councilor of Savannah and serves as the head of the Council as its now-longest serving member for the past 22 years. She was first elected as Mayor when she was 37, and served in the position until her election to the Council when she was 42. During their tenure, however, Miles has been consistently bullied and picked on by Adele, and in return, became the biggest thorn in her side. After her abdication, Miles is fully prepared to take out years of pent up rage on an unsuspecting Piers, who she views to be an extension of everything she hated about Adele. Piers feels similar, knowing only their mother's side of things during her disagreements with Miles.
Councilor Marlowe Sidney of Athens (they/them)
Marlowe is the Councilor of Athens, and also its "Blessed Heir", the next of the Sidney Family destined to govern the Classic City. After their grandfather was murdered and their father ascended to the Chancellorship, Marlowe took over Councilor duties in Atlanta at age 19. Marlowe grew up sheltered within the cult walls of Athens and didn't spend any time outside the city until becoming Councilor, causing them to feel out of place and betrayed by the state of the world outside. Their history studying genetics led them to meet Dr. Panya, who they quickly bonded with due to their mutual histories in Athens. As they've been exposed more to the outside world, Marlowe has created a new persona, one they can't take back home to Athens without repercussions from the Chancellor and their stepmother, Dr. Levine. Marlowe and Gretel have been romantically involved for the past few months, but Marlowe knows that it won't last as soon as they're called home to become the next Chancellor.
Councilor David Johnson of Atlanta (he/him)
David is the Councilor of Atlanta, elected to the position only two years prior by the people of ATLZoS. Although the newest Councilor, David has been a longtime presence in the Palace, having served as the Captain of the Royal Guard and Commander of Special Operations prior to his current role. It was his steady and very frugal hand in these positions that earned him the respect of military and civilians alike in Atlanta. David has never been married, although he and Adele had a close romantic relationship during the last few years of her life, unbeknownst to most. David and Gavin respect each other's military strengths, but David does tend to hover over Gavin's shoulder frequently, as he misses being part of the military. While coming off as grumpy and cold, David has a heart of gold. Piers trusts his judgement for most matters but still has reservations about his intentions.
Councilor Fantasia Mason of Macon (she/her)
Mason is the Councilor of Macon. She is extremely socially conservative, which puts her at odds with the rest of the Council. No one likes her, not even Miles, not even Adele, not even Meghan. The only reason she can't be ignored is due to Macon's position as an economic and population powerhouse. Piers would do anything to get rid of her (and they aren't alone, most of the Council would like her gone).
Councilor Callum Meghan of Valdosta (he/him)
Meghan is the Councilor of Valdosta and is quite a charismatic figure. He was elected at age 30 to serve in the Council, and has held the position ever since. Unlike most of the others, Meghan is a strong anti-monarchist, which earned him his own personal hell from Adele. Now, with Piers in charge, Meghan has changed his strategy just a little bit, trying to weave his policies into those he knows Piers will like. Piers sees right through him, but appreciates the effort and gives him credit where it's due.
Councilor Nyla Adel of Albany (she/her)
Nyla is the Councilor of Albany and a former Commander of Royal Perimeter Operations. She served under David's captainship, before being elected to the Council by her native Albany. Unlike David, Nyla truly fits into the world of politics and has been serving for six years. She and Giaan have three kids, and she hopes all will follow in their parent's footsteps, although only her youngest has attended the Academy. Grady respects Nyla quite a bit, recognizing the role she played in Grady's achievements. Grady often goes to her for military advice (and political advice when she's trying to help Piers).
Councilor Esther Green of Rome (she/her)
Green is the Councilor of Rome, the newest of the Zones of Safety, serving for all 12 years. She often misses Council meetings, working to help stabilize Rome's city government after a recent political attack. When she is in meetings, she often is busy working on other things or sleeping and just votes alongside whatever Miles is voting. Piers really isn't sure what to think of Green.
The Others
Lennox (they/he)
Lennox is an outsider who Piers happened to befriend when sneaking out of the Palace and Perimeter. The two almost killed each other out of fright during their first meeting. Since then, the two have developed such a tight bond, and would do literally anything for each other. Lennox is oblivious to a majority of what's going on politically, and doesn't even know who Piers is, much to their relief, allowing them to relax and be themself around him. Piers knows Lennox works as an assassin, but it allows them to keep tabs on whoever his boss is, while simultaneously not knowing who they are. Outside of murder, Lennox creates a variety of art, preferring fashion design and music composition the most. He dreams often about moving somewhere where he doesn't have to hurt anyone anymore and can just create art for the rest of his life.
Louise Ledet "Lou" (she/they)
Lou is another outsider, who is a little less friendly to Piers. The two have had several encounters. All Piers knows is that she carries a shotgun and rides an electric motorcycle. She is great at appearing from nowhere and seems to be a motherly figure to Lennox. Lennox, however, doesn't like to talk much about her (and doesn't seem to like her).
Jules Ledet (she/her)
Jules is an old Academy friend of Grady, who was discharged on Conspiracy Against the Crown charges, barring her from military service. Since then, she's been working as a hired gun for various people, before approaching Grady after being hired to kill Piers. She's a bit of a tortured soul, hiding behind a flirty goofball persona. Piers takes a liking to her, somewhat trusting her after she tells Grady about the plot.
Dr. Bergeron (he/him)
Dr. Bergeron is the mysterious former research partner of Dr. Panya. Not much is known about him, as Dr. Panya is hard to talk to, let alone get information out of.
Worldbuilding
The Plague
The Plague, or Incarnareum repartus is the cause for the apocalypse. It resembles most zombie diseases from fiction, however there's a weird thing within the NYTF universe around calling them "zombies". The fungi was created in a CDC lab as an experiment in the early 2030s, but escaped in 2035. The initial "apocalypse" happened from 2036-2040. Survival rates are low without extensive (and very expensive) treatment, causing revolts among the lower and middle class which overthrew several governments (including the United States, which fractured into its individual states). By the mid-2040s, the world settled down and began to adapt, using preventative measures and concentrating populations within "Zones of Safety" (in Georgia). These Zones have strict rules but provide safety and sanitation which keeps the plague victim population at bay and outside the Perimeters. By the time of NYTF, it still exists, and their are occasional outbreaks, but it's not actively causing an apocalypse.
The State of Georgia
The State of Georgia is the third post-Apocalyptic iteration of Georgia's government. The first was run by corporations and was overthrown by David Greene. Greene's dictatorship lasted only a year, and was ended with the Second September Revolution. This was led by James and Kylar Hall, who were instated as temporary leaders. After proving themselves to be worthy, they were made kings. Until Adele, the Hall Royal Family has actually been very productive, democratic, and well beloved by the people of Georgia. Within Georgia there are 7 Zones of Safety, who all receive representation in the Council, the democratic body which is supposed to "check" the monarchy (however, Adele gutted their power). There are also 14 settlements, which don't meet 3/5 requirements to become a Zone, although some of them are on their way.

Further Commentary
Oh hi! Welcome back to the chaotic world of Not your Typical Fairytale! This story has been going for a long time but I really polished up some shit this time around and it's more cohesive. With that said, here's a few notes I have:
Yes, the intermissions are back
Characters who use multiple sets of pronouns will most often be refferred to using the one which is the most clear writing wise (EX: Using she for Councilor Miles when she's in a scene with Piers, they for when they're in a scene with Grady)
Yes this is going to be three books + a collection of untold stories
London Larson = Lou. I had to change her name for my sanity
Also June = Jules. Another name change for my sanity that JUST happened so if you see June in things....sorry :(
Athens has gotten SO much weirder. Be prepared for cannibalism.
More will be added soon to worldbuilding, I'm just tired from characters.
Here's some character art!

After Day of reckoning a lot of people have been downing Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. A lot of it was just people poking fun at them but I saw this one post from a boxing site that felt deeper and resonated with sentiments I've had about those two. It goes as follows.
"The truth is that as both of their defining fights came against each other (barring Fury/Klitschko), their reputations are inextricably linked and dependent on one another. After Wilder was so thoroughly dominated by Parker, and Fury struggled badly (and arguably lost) to Ngannou, the thinness of their resumes casts a shadow over their legacies.
All of a sudden, Fury being dropped by Cunningham starts to look bad again. Fury's life and death struggle with Wallin starts to look bad (after Joshua thrashed him) . His choice of Schwarz and an unknown Wallin post-Wilder 1 looks like a lack of confidence. His arrogance of choosing Whyte and an ancient Chisora for fights NOBODY wanted post Wilder 3 looks like what it was - greed. And the Ngannou option too - going for high reward/low risk. It's not a good look. I thought Fury was a nailed on ATG, and his bravery for facing Wilder when he did and doing what he did was the stuff of legends. But again, that is the only redeeming factor in his post-Klitschko resume - and now that looks...severely diminished.
Likewise Wilder. His WBC reign was absurdly stage-managed by the WBC and PBC. And Fury was a cherry pick gone wrong. Clever management, but after his thrashing by Parker it starts to really look like smoke and mirrors. And again, I loved Wilder as a fighter. I wanted to see him face the best and genuinely thought he would find a way to win despite his limitations. But we NEVER got those fights. And so now we start to wonder why...and it does seem like he was manufactured. Had he fought Ruiz and beaten him, had he fought and beat Whyte even, or Joyce - or even Martin we wouldn't be saying this as we would have a much better yardstick of his true level. But he managed to be a champ and not fight these fights."
what do you think about this post and what do you think about how these past few months have affected the way people see Wilder and Tyson?
The post is right mostly, though I think it undersells Parker a tad. though I disagree that a win over Charles Martin would have been some huge deterrent for criticism considering Wilder KOed the guy (Helenius) who KOed the guy (Kownacki) who beat Martin.
I think people attributed a lot to Wilder that just was not shown in the ring. For as bad as the Parker fight was for him, it was not a split from the norm. When he has fought skilled heavyweights in the past, he has been down or even on the cards late (See the Ortiz fights). I think the wars with Fury might have blinded people from the fact his resume is really light because that used to be a really common critique up til he fought Fury.
I think Fury has fucked his legacy up more. Almost losing to a guy in his first ever boxing match as the lineal heavyweight champion is bad. Like really bad. Especially when he was openly ducking the unification fight everyone wants to see.
But also, the fact of the matter is heavyweight is bad. Yeah, we could and should have got AJ vs Tyson Fury/Deontay Wilder at some point in the last like 6-7 years, but otherwise it's not like there was much out there. Like Whyte is not a deeply skilled or interesting fighter (and we'd all have preferred for the Usyk fight), but he was honestly the most "interesting" fight available for Fury in 2022. Usyk and AJ were tied up with one another (+ Usyk was serving in the war). Parker had semi-recently lost to Whyte. Hrgovic had yet to beat Zhang, Zhang had yet to beat Joyce, and Joyce's most notable win was either Daniel Dubois or Carlos Takam. The third Chisora fight was blatant cherry-picking, but honestly Whyte was the best available heavyweight come April 2022. The only other one I can think of that "could" have got the fight was Andy Ruiz but people were still laughing at him for coming into the rematch with AJ overweight and underprepared. And when he did pop up, he barely edged out a 43+ year old Luis Ortiz despite knocking him down like 3x. The division is just bad.

June grew up with the perfect life, literally. Born to two wealthy, beautiful, and successful entrepreneurs, June lived a life where your only worries consisted of which party June had to attend next and whose bed June would be residing in that night. June has been surrounded by success, entertained by only the highest social circles. But all good dreams must come to an end. June's parents have given her an ultimatum: either graduate from college as a doctor or lose her inheritance. What’s a sim to do?
master the violin skill, painting skill, and knitting skill (you can choose a different skill of your own choosing if you don’t have the pack)
make at least 2 good friends with at least one “negative” personality trait, party with them at least once every weekend as a young adult.
throw at least one party where your sim has 3 first kisses within the event (for funsies lole)
complete at least one week of university (or work) before having a one-night stand that results in a daughter (you can cheat for this, and if you’re playing as a sim that can’t get pregnant, you can impregnate another sim and raise the child alone.)
drop out of college after having your child
live in an apartment for your entire YA life
have at least 2 children as a young adult that you are not close with, but your third and all others you have as an adult will have high friendship as they are considered a “planned” pregnancy (high friendship, high romance with partner/spouse). this child is your favorite. and it’s blatant.
marry the parent of the third child and move out of your apartment and into a home. no specifications on the build but think of it as your “white picket fence” moment.

fur, money, adventure: mechanisms of colonialism and survivance
riel ✰ | march, 2023
“Of all the things on earth, the motherland is the most important
and sacred to us because we inherited it from our ancestors,”
- Louis Riel
Tumblr media
Fig. 1, Wilson. I. Former Jean Caron Sr. House, Batoche Saskatchewan. Image courtesy of I. Wilson and Parks Canada
I am Red River Métis, descending maternally from historic Métis families by the names of Berthelet, Caron, Ste. Germain, Larivière, Dazè, Dubois, and Boudreau; we come from the Red River Settlement in Manitoba and Batoche, Saskatchewan. My Berthelet family members were employees of the North-West Company and community leaders in the town of Pointe à Grouette, now Ste. Agathe (St. Onge). My fifth great uncle Jean Caron Sr. fought in the Battle of Duck Lake of the North-West Resistance of 1885, with his sons and under the command of Gabriel Dumont, Jean Caron Sr’s house still stands in Batoche to this day (fig. 1). I introduce myself in this way, the traditional way of the Métis to situate myself on this land and contextualise my knowledge and experiences.
My practice serves to counter the settler-colonial understanding of Métis people and our history and establish us as a people who have been practising survivance for generations. With the help of aesthetics of survivance I oppose mechanisms of colonialism; aesthetics including the Hudson’s Bay Company’s bloody legacy, the monuments and public art installed throughout Calgary, the suburban cowboys that come out of hiding in their McMansions on the outskirts of the city, riding their steel steeds, raised trucks, to the summer Stampede. The aesthetics of survivance are “[...]more than survival, more than endurance, or mere response, [...] stories of survivance are the creases of sovereignty,” (Vizenor, 15). In her 2019 book The North-West is Our Mother by Jean Teillet, the author compares the birth of the Métis Nation to human birth; messy, bloody, painful. Our history is vastly complex and controversial in the eyes of the average Canadian settler today. It is a history that makes settlers uncomfortable, confused, sometimes defensive and angry in response to lack of knowledge and this ignorance is often no fault of their own. Canada has a carefully curated canon of history that we are all spoon-fed in school until given the chance to learn the other sides of this history, to think critically and hear stories of survivance.

Countering aesthetics of survivance, The Hudson’s Company has developed their own aesthetics of colonialism. “Fur! Money! Adventure! That [is] what the Hudson’s Bay Company territory had to offer Englishmen and Canadians three hundred years ago,” (Sealy, 1). From the very beginning of the point blanket, with its iconic stripes on white wool, traded for a single beaver pelt to an advertisement from the year 2000 (fig. 2). An image of a nuclear family wearing matching white outfits in a clean white room. Everything accented with green, red, yellow, and indigo stripes, down to the scarf that the grandmother is knitting, referencing the histories of trade and handmade goods long abandoned by the HBC in favour of their modern department store model and multiple aesthetic rebrands throughout the years after the industrial revolution (Toneguzzi). The advertisement simply states, “Shopping is Good, Toronto”. Pro pelle cuttem, a pelt for a skin, a skin for a skin.

The HBC shield on a building in downtown Calgary (fig. 3) is a grim reminder of the bloody birth of this country, laughing in my face. As Billy Ray Belcourt puts it: “Canada is still in the business of gunning down NDNs. […] Despite the stories of progress and equality at the core of Canada’s national identity, a long tradition of brutality and negligence is what constitutes kinship for the nation of citizens sat atop the lands of older, more storied ones. […] What I can do is love as though it will rupture the singularity of Canadian cruelty.” (Belcourt, 5)

A Spectacle of Me for You: Otipemisiwak Fantasy (2022-present) is an ongoing body of work that explores the Métis identity through a modern and Indigiqueer lens, and through humour and the NDN belly laugh (Whitehead). The work consists of a series of photographs of myself wearing a costume I created using a combination of found and handmade garments. In the photographs from 2022 titled Otipemisiwak Fantasy Husband, (figs. 4 and 5) which have been printed in the form of stickers and two different postcard designs, the character Otipemisiwak Fantasy Husband (OFH), the masked trickster, poses with wood leftover from building a Red River cart in 2022. The aesthetics of survivance often incorporate embodying the skewed image that settlers have of the savage Indian, over exaggerating it so that that the joke remains in our own hands, and we can laugh at the ignorant moniyaw. In these photographs OFH is wearing a red and black lumberjack flannel over a red shirt with a black graphic of Louis Riel’s Face and white text that reads “Keeping’ it Riel,”. Around his waist is a ceinture fléchée, and a beaded leather strap on harness worn over brown dress pants. On his head is a latex mask of Louis Riel, his skin is placid and his features cartoonish, in the style of the masks of American presidents used in the 1991 film Point Break (directed by Katherine Bigelow) (fig. 6).

This work explores the aestheticization of colonialism through these political figures and latex masks which can be attributed to the abstraction of the real person from their caricature in history and in the cultural zeitgeist. One postcard design contains a full body shot of the character in a comically dominant pose with a log positioned suggestively between his legs, standing in for the strap on harness’s missing toy. The second design is a close-up shot of the character’s pelvis, the strap on harness visible with his thumbs hooked casually on the straps.
Referencing other Indigenous artistic personas such as Adrian Stimson’s “Buffalo Boy” and Lori Blondeau’s “Belle Sauvage” (fig. 7), my artwork including OFH satirises the settler-colonial understandings of Louis Riel as a violent traitor to the government by pointing to the ways his story has grown into a mythology of sorts in the eyes of Canadians in a similar manner to other related figures like the former presidents represented in Point Break.

Like Stimson’s Buffalo Boy, my character represents an exaggerated Métis identity in order to “[…] camp up colonialism, sexuality, and authenticity,”  embodying the trickster archetype like Buffalo Boy in the words of Stimson, “he’s campy, ridiculous, and absurd, but he is also a storyteller, who exposes cultural and societal truths,” (Rice, Taunton, Stimson). OFH mimics the over-sexualized settler-colonial perception of Indigenous masculinity, sexuality,  and queerness and is an exploration of the ways in which my identity is tokenized: sexually, spiritually, academically, and culturally.
A Spectacle of Me for You: Otipemisiwak Fantasy is a way of participating in the phenomenon within contemporary Métis art of Louis Riel related kitsch objects that flood markets across the Métis homeland. Alongside and juxtaposing red and white Canadian kitsch that litters tourists' traps and contemporary art galleries across this land, appears the stoic face Louis Riel, gazing out at the country that has developed since his murder in 1885. As Marilyn Dumont puts it: “Riel is dead, but he just keeps coming back,” (70) Contemporary artists like Jessie Ray Short embody Louis Riel by taking on his likeness as a costume. The short film Wake up! (2015) (fig. 8) is a queering of this popular trend.

The artist, transforms herself into Louis Riel by applying facial hair, a wig, and clothing to mimic the most famous portrait of Riel in a drag-esque performance. The work asks, “How do you explain a culture in small talk?” and is an example of the “re-examining the cultural significance of Louis Riel [that] allows us to consider the ways in which we can question representation while still respecting the importance this history holds.” (Junker)

Fig. 10 (right), Danger, Dayna. Big’Uns: Adrienne, 2017. Courtesy of the artist’s website.
The beaded strap-on worn over the pants and the explicit nature of the posing is in reference to Dayna Danger’s Big’Uns (2017) (fig. 10) series, as well as their series of beaded fetish masks for their emphasis on material and process (fig. 9). The result is what Danger refers to as “the most Native BDSM thing ever,” to wrap yourself in beads. Like Danger’s beaded mask project, the Otipemisiwak Fantasy Husband persona came about partly out of a joke, the desire to make something humorous and sexy. Being queered by my Indigeneity, my sexuality, and gender, I consider Sara Ahmed’s words from the introduction of her book Queer Phenomenology: Orientations, Objects, Others,
“A queer phenomenology, perhaps, might start by redirecting our attention toward different objects, those that are “less proximate” or even those that deviate or are deviant. And yet, I would not say that a queer phenomenology would simply be a matter of generating queer objects,”
The emphasis on the strap-on harness points to a specific queer object with cultural associations within the concept of queer phenomenology and orientations. It functions not only as a deviant object or a queer object but also an Indigiqueer “orientation device,” (Ahmed, 3).

The most recent work in A Spectacle of Me for You: Otipemisiwak Fantasy is a performance titled Reading Marilyn Dumont to A Railway Berm (2023) in which OFH, sporting a new fringed leather jacket and matching tan suede Manitobah Mukluks reads poetry by Métis poet, author, and academic Marilyn Dumont to the dismantled railway that once entered the former Fort Calgary. The title of the poem is A Letter to John A. MacDonald and the author directly addresses the first prime minister and informs him of his failed railroad project. In addition to the Louis Riel mask, I had also begun the process of making a mask in the image of John A. MacDonald but had not found a use for it until reading the poem by Dumont. The performance is documented in the form of a hand-bound zine using imitation sinew, with photo documentation of the performance of reading to the railroad and John A. as well as the action of “scalping” the John A. mask to remove it from the base. This is contrasted with documentation of the site using both historical and modern images taken during the performance and sourced from the museum of Fort Calgary’s website (fig. 11).

Fig. 12, Starr, Riel. Prairie Vessel, 2022. Image courtesy of the artist.
Prairie Vessel (2022) (fig. 12) is an exploration of Métis aesthetics of survivance, specifically the Red River Cart and its material and physical qualities, as well as its history and symbolism in our culture. The Red River Cart is represented in the contemporary Métis Nation of Alberta and Manitoba Métis Federation logos, the cart being revered as an important symbol of survivance to our people. Historically the carts were built without the use of standardised measurement or plans, however there were two defining design features common to all Red River carts; their two wheels and lack of any metal joinery, only using wood and rawhide in their construction. The research for this piece included scouring online databases like the Louis Riel Institute and the Gabriel Dumont Institute in order to find any sort of construction plans for the carts. George Fayant is one of the few Métis makers with this skill, and has been building them for over two decades, since 1998 (Patterson). Prairie Vessel (2022) is a study of Métis material culture out of the need to preserve a lesser-known art form, and to practise survivance both personally and for my people so that I may keep knowledge and ways of making beyond alive, to keep them thriving in the spirits of my ancestors and all living Métis.
I am just one Halfbreed, but I am still Halfbreed. My ancestors' spiritual and genetic material makes up my personhood and part of that personhood is in all Métis. I do not yet know who I am to my people, but I carry an important name and an old spirit. I would like to be a trickster, “lotta raven in that one,” they’ll say (Maracle, 19). I would like to be like old James Bird Jr., trickster, trader, smart as a whip, a deadly sense of humour, and mean to missionaries. Wiisakayachack, Nanabush, Bluejay, Raven, Coyote, Li P’tchi Mond, Chi Jean, James Bird Jr., I long to be a chakapish.
