SHH. Going to tell you a secret: I made a video game and then didn't tell anyone. Well, more of a demo/proof-of-concept (complete with bugs and collision issues!).
Down The Eye Of The Tiger is a dream diary-genre game made in Rpgmaker MV over the course of roughly 2 months and some change as part of Dream Diary Jams 6 & 7. My plan is to keep working on it sporadically whenever I feel like doing pixel art (read: often enough and with excruciating intensity) until it's done.
Hopefully my next update will have more of the "narrative" implemented; in this release I was just trying to make sure that everything I had put in-engine was technically accessible to players.
If anyone's interested in seeing alerts on development, I'll be posting future updates/commentary type stuff over at @downtheeyeofthetiger.
Jam runs from May 15th, 2023 to June 26th, 2023. You can join before or during those dates!
Welcome newcomers and veterans to Dream Diary Jam 7, a game jam all about the creation of fangames for the cult classic RPG Maker 2003 game Yume Nikki. The goal is to create a Yume Nikki fangame, a demo of one, or to even update one of your previous entries. You’ll be given 6 weeks to work on your fangame, starting on May 15th and ending on the June 26th — Yume Nikki’s 19th anniversary.
Submission types:
Traditional Yume Nikki Fangame - The most common type of fangame. Typically follows the same formula/style as the original Yume Nikki, but with an original cast of characters and environments, and sometimes new mechanics. You can get as experimental as you want!
Examples of this type include: .flow, Yume 2kki, Lcd Dem, and Answered Prayers
A Fangame of the Yume Nikki setting - A fangame that uses the characters/settings of the original Yume Nikki, rather than a new original cast. Think something along the lines of fanfiction. This can be any kind of genre, JRPG, dating sim, clicker, etc. You can even make a fangame of YUME NIKKI -DREAM DIARY- if you want to.
Examples of this type include: NASU Plus, Memories of Replica, Dream Kombat, and Yume Nikki Hazard
An update to a previous submission - Didn’t get to make as much as you wanted in a previous jam? Need an excuse to work on your fangame? Don’t want to start anew? This is for you! If you can provide a substantial update to one of your previous entries, then it’s also an acceptable submission, even if you’ve been chipping away at it outside of the jams.

Swan Song, my entry for last year's Dream Diary Jam, has received an update. As per Dream Diary Jam's rules, it's not a big update, but there's a ton of small details that have been improved, a few bugs that have been fixed, etc. With this done, I'll be able to focus on adding new stuff to the game during the next jam rather than fixing everything from last year.
You can read the full update notes here. Big thanks to everyone who has played the game and given feedback. I'm looking forward to doing a proper major update a few months from now.
Refactoring/porting Nocti has been going well. Ive decided to add in an area that's not 100% finished but the way it's structured means that doesn't matter.
Porting the events has given me time to think about the story of Nocti and helped solidify where i want it to go. Its also made me realize that said story, the real "meat" of the game, is found by poking and prodding and showing effects to NPCs. This fits excellently with Nocti's theme but isn't everyone's cup of tea.
In an attempt to mitigate player frustration (and get people to see the stuff I've spent ages on) I've added features to hopefully make finding interactive objects easier.
The in game manual is there to explain the exploration/YNFG genre game loop and basic controls to new players. Interaction Indicators will either highlight objects when you hover over them or when you walk by, based on if the mouse controls are on or off. The symbol also changes to match the type of interaction.
Highlight Objects puts a white, slowly pulsing border on collectable or important objects like Effects and Orbs. Exit Arrows shows the location of more ambiguous transfer points on maps. These options are all off by default, but if you need a little help getting around or need extra clarification they're there for you.
I've tried my best to make as many accessibility options as possible given RPG Maker's limitations, so I hope someone can put them to good use.
There's also a character that serves as a diagetic Universal Hint System, but they aren't immediately present. There are currently two ways to unlock them early, and I changed the dialogue of the item for the easier method to make it clearer you are doing the right thing.
As a final note, I found out the Nocti has an article on the new YNFG wiki, but it is super out of date, mixing stuff from the Jam entry and the current build. I feel weird editing it myself as the creator, but I don't know how big of a following this game has. I don't advertise much, and it's been a long time since an update... If it comes down to it I'll update it myself but for now I'm sending out a call to action.
Thanks for everything! The Update is coming soon, I hope you enjoy it when it's finally out.
im not adding many effects/items to my game (at least for 0.1), so im trying to add some fun functionality to the few i have. ie the torch can reveal stuff literally and metaphorically.
