DRAWING CLASS - Negative and positive relations . 2/1/23

Today you will learn how to look at the the balance between the negative space and the positive shape that objects hold. In class we will set the still life together. For those students who are sick you will follow instructions as stated below.

Setting up Props

As you set up your props, find objects similar to those you see on my set up. I use rectangular, cylindrical, square and round objects.

Notice that I have set up some items ( brushes and scissors)  that break up space.

Also, observe that some objects are above the Horizon Line.

Prop them up higher than other objects.

Slightly space out your objects .

Try to create a balance between the objects and the negative space.

The objects in your still life hold positive space and the space around the objects is called negative space.

An artist’s job is to find the balance between these two worlds.

We call that negative to positive space relations.

Once you have created a good arrangement for your Still Life, then you can begin drawing.

Sit in front of your still life at eye level.

Start with the following exercises:

1) 10 mins    

Gesture Drawing warm up exercises non stop for 10 mins.

2) 10 mins  

Non Dominant hand  Gesture Drawing

3) 15 mins      

Contour Drawing.  

4) 15 mins

Blind Contour Drawing

Next you will do an Outer Contour Drawing.

The outer contour drawing looks at the overall shape of all objects. That means,  You are looking at the outer edge of all the objects.

In this drawing your line stays above the Horizon line.

Horizon line is where the table holding your Still Life and the wall meet.

Draw everything above it, nothing below it.

Outer Contour and Negative space Drawing

20 mins      Begin the outer contour drawing .

Starting from the Left side of the Still Life at the horizon line begin drawing using the charcoal pencil.

Draw only the outer edge of the objects that rise above the horizon Line.

Do not draw below the horizon line.

Once you are finished, you will now darken everything above the horizon line using a charcoal stick.

You will then be left with a drawing that documents two worlds:

White (the color of the paper ) is below the horizon line.

Black is everything above the horizon line .

Once you have completed the above drawing you will then spend an hour doing a free lance drawing. You will have two HW to complete this weekend.

1) Homework:

Using a cereal box as your form, create a view finder that measures 5  X 7 inches. See the video above to create your own view finder.

You will cut out ( two L ) measuring 5x 7 inches as you see above in this picture.

You will be using this view finder next week on Monday.

2)Homework

I have added a video where I show you how to do boxes. It will be above this post.

Boxes relate to space and perspective.

They are mathematically correct.

They follow a simple rule of parallel lines.  

These lines are always horizontal, vertical and angled left or right.

You will spend and hour and a half drawing box after box following the example you see in the video.

Do as many boxes as you can in that time frame.

The aim of the assignment is for you to learn how to correctly draw them.

If you need to use more time then do so.

Post the Box HW on your blog by 5pm Thursday. 

Post Class assignments by end of day Weds.

Figures exercise

This exercise is very interesting while we start the first drawing. For the first exercise, all the symbol is different and went I started my drawing my brain suddenly have an idea for every single symbol ,but if the symbol i did have an idea, I will just jump to next symbol till I finish all drawing I will jump back to the symbol i didn't finish and started to think more idea for the symbol.

Drawing 2 has a different compare to drawing 1. Drawing 2 is all the same symbol and this is quite interesting cause went I started to draw the idea also suddenly jump out to my mind but because all the symbol is the same, so went I was drawing I will think that my next drawing will it be the same as the previous figure? I don't want my idea is repeating again so if it is the same I will think another. And this drawing I will draw in order cause all the symbol is the same.

Drawing 3 is the same as drawing 1 and because it is the same so that has some idea the same with drawing 1. Also, I try to combine all of the symbols with the comic and started my drawing in the middle line but that is very hard because the symbol is not related to the previous one so I have to waste more time to think the symbol can become what. For this drawing I learn about the same drawing also can be different, so be more patient and more creative for every single draw.

This exercise is about how to stick the candle to the wall and don't make the melted candle drop on the table.

This exercise I learn about be more creative for the material that we have.

Drawing Class - Compositional Analysis 9/13/22

Last Thursday this class worked on a drawing that emphasized and animated the negative space. 

The technique is called overall contour.

We will begin class today doing several warmups that will include

After the warm up students will begin the assignment for today , compositional analysis .

Today you will be learning how to work with a view finder. Using the view finder will allow you to analyse and balance the space in your still life to create an interesting composition.

In the still life below notice how I have purposely include objects that break up the negative space:

I have set up some items ( brushes and scissors)  that break up space above the horizon line.

Those objects like the mug , brushes scissors are propped up higher than other objects. The horizon line is were the table and wall meet.

After a series of warmups we will do in class, we will proceed to work on today’s assignment.

In your Newsprint pad, divide the paper in 10 spaces as follows:

1) Vertical rectangle

2) Horizontal rectangle

3 +4) Large Square and a Small Square

5 ) Vertical Panoramic

6) horizontal Panoramic

7) Right Angle Triangle

8) Triangle

9) Circle

10) Irregular shape

This is an example of how you can break up your spaces in the 18 x 24 Newsprint Pad.

The purpose of these assignments done with the viewfinder is to teach you how to develop a strong compositional sense .

The class will work on this assignment Tuesday and Thursday.

Tips for using the viewfinder:

Extend your arm with the viewfinder, look through it to find the best compositions.

The best composition is one that can balance the space and the line of the object.

Look thru the still life and try and balance the objects and the negative space.

Once you find an interesting grouping you will do contour drawings of what you see.

Each shape will have a different variation of the still life.

For the final part of class on Thursday:

Students will choose two of their best compositions from the studies above.

Next, working large in the newsprint pad, they will re-create those two different compositions.

One drawing per page. (30 mins each drawing )

Maintain the same compositional boundaries as used in small studies.

Each drawing should be rendered using the contour line only.

Make sure you look at the form, structure of objects and draw them as accurately as you can.

Make sure that the negative space is as interesting as the positive shapes you render.

Look for that negative-positive relation to balance the drawing.

Homework-

Find your favorite garment, can be a hoodie or sweater, T-Shirt, shirt or jacket.

Now get a chair and place the garment on the back of the chair loosely creating interesting folds.

Let the garment create natural free flowing folds as you lay it a top the chair.

I want you to pay attention to the weight of fabric through the folds it creates.

Your drawing should show those folds.

Sit at distance from it and draw it  making sure you include the chair in your drawing as well.

You will complete the following:

Three drawings in your sketchbook.

One drawing per page for a total of  THREE Drawings.

1) First a quick gesture drawing.

2) Contour Drawing

3) Free Hand drawing - any material any style of your choosing.

Post on your Tumblr all work you are able to complete today by end of class time. HW post by tomorrow at 5pm.
