- Konto ga Hajimaru (my jdrama of the year) - Kodoku no Gurume 9 (should I even include this lol, it’s just my all-time fave) - Dragon Zakura 2 (you don’t really need to watch the first season, I watched it not long after it aired over a decade ago and have never had a rewatch since so I even forget what happened lol) - Pension Metsa - Ikiru Toka, Shinu Toka, Chichioya Toka - Hankei 5 Metoru - Kakenai - Ore no Ie no Hanashi - Saiai - Nao-chan wa Shogakusannensei - Zenkamono - Nijiiro Karute - Ojisama to Neko - Boku no Neechan - Solo Katsu Joshi no Susume The last two aren’t fully subbed yet but I can already tell they’re going on the list.

15 years ago I watched a show called Dragon Zakura with my brother. It’s about a teacher coming to a school and teaching a group of “losers” so they manage to get into university. It’s done with care and lots of attention and the teacher (Abe Hiroshi) shows all those different kinds of learning techniques and it’s really just about that but wholesome how he teaches the kids to value themselves and be proud of themselves.

And now ... IN THE YEAR 2021 (!!!!!!) THERE’S A SECOND SEASON ASJAJSHDVJAHSVDJHAVSDJHV!!!!!!!!

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

jdrama spring 2021 (part 2)

Dragon Zakura 2 - rating 13.90 Stars: Abe Hiroshi, etc

The original drama was a breakout amongst feel-good school dramas at the time (e.g. Gokusen). It was one of the few dramas that did not shy away from portraying the adult world in all its hypocrisy, cynicism and soul-crushing favouritism. Don't believe in the lies of going to a reputable university for learning, it said, but go there because having that on your CV opens doors to places that you otherwise can't go. If you want to change the rules of society, no one will listen until you become a part of the game and climb to the top. It's the kind of cruel truth you wish would really get taught in schools, because the older I become, the more accurate I realise it is. Systems don't get changed from the outside. You have to play the game first. Unfortunately the second season doesn't have the deeply cynical message of the first season, nor does Sakuraki have the same domineering confidence that would be so fearsome and captivating to teenagers that age. The high rating is more a symptom of nostalgia than its actual quality, much like several sequels last year.

Nemesis - rating 11.4 Stars: Sakurai Sho, Hirose Suzu

Honestly I wish Sakurai would play a proper detective role, because he's got the looks of an intellectual, and his most interesting characters are the unhinged geniuses in Kazoku Game and Quiz Show. The tone of this series is very similar to Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de, without the comical flamboyance. It's a cute family affair but not particularly believable or memorable.

Sakura no Tou - rating 13.5 Stars: Tamaki Hiroshi, etc

This is the sort of drama that requires you to pay attention for the entire season. It's dark and gritty, but less morally disturbing than some of Tamaki's more recent dramas. It also doesn't have a procedural side to it, so you really have to get invested in all the characters and the story to keep watching. It's held up by solid actors, and this idea of protecting the system vs actually being morally righteous is a recurring theme in Asian shows.
