The months from hell* are almost over, and I’m celebrating by painting over my gray hairs and becoming a 90s style brunette/brunet again.

*I have truly been overworking myself to a terrible degree for the entirety of the summer. I almost had another nervous breakdown three weeks ago, and I’ve experienced moments of mental paralysis before that. Part of it was work related, part of it was helping my mother set up a space for artists to experiment with… there was just a relentless build up of pressure and it was a nightmare!

BUT, while I won’t say things are fine and dandy now (let’s be honest, I’ll always be a hot mess) they are going better! Anyways, look at my mother’s project space website:

Thanks for that post about dark content lore. I do tend to consume it and the current state of tumblr...does not make me feel very good about myself when I read something as simple as a yandere fic. So hearing that from you gave me a little pick me up.

of course!! tumblr's current environment around dc is like... sad. abysmal. lacking any and all nuance. and overall, perpetuating a culture that does not promote creative freedom!! i truly mean i will always defend one's right to post and share dc. it is so deeply important to me and i'm glad that that sentiment brightened things for you!!

There's something I've noticed recently in Top Gun fanfiction - people are writing pieces set in the late 80s & early 90s, but are including things like modern cellphone usage. I tend to notice that happening more in fics by younger writers.

And it got me thinking that we actually now have almost(?) two generations of fic writers that legit don't know what it was like to live a life without a cellphone/smart phone or things like streaming services, Door Dash, and Uber.

I understand the old adage of "write what you know" but it's extremely jarring and will totally take me out of a story when a 13 year old Bradley has a cellphone to call his mom or Maverick. Because he would have been 13 in 1997 (going by the birth year from the info sheet in the movie) and cellphones really weren't affordable for the general public until just around 2000. In fact, it wouldn't be that unusual if Bradley didn't get his first cellphone until his senior year of highschool which would have been '01/'02 (I was born in '87 and didn't have my own cellphone until junior year in '04). And don't forget the first iPhone didn't come out until 2007 (the same year Netflix started streaming services).

I still distinctly remember babysitting my younger siblings in the mid to late 90s and my parents having to leave the phone number of wherever they were going & what times they'd be there in case I had to get a hold of them.

If you had the money, you might have had a legit car phone. That was a phone that was installed in your car, usually mounted to the dashboard or to something in the center console. My grandparents had one and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It looked kind of like this one.

And if you did have a cellphone in the late 90s, it was basically a brick. This is what my mom's first cellphone looked like (and you actually had to pull the antenna out for it to work).

So, you know, if you're unfamiliar with a certain time period (and this honestly goes for anybody wanting to write anything set in a time other than the present), do a little research or if you're able, talk to someone who lived through that time.

So we know about the origins of dogs in the Beastars world, but they're far from the only domesticated animals in the series, so I figure that they likely had a purpose they were created for after the war.

I could easily see some sort of industrial revolution or rebuilding effort happening after the war, so animals that could aid in the creation of products, services, and modernization (through government, industry, education, etc) were highly valued

Animals like sheep, alpaca, and angora rabbits domesticated for their wool

Cows, goats, and chickens domesticated for their milk and eggs respectively

Dogs and pigs for their intelligence

Pigeons for their abilities as messengers

Cats, I think, would be a bit of an outlier. Probably also domesticated for their intelligence (or maybe even self domesticated without the use of government assistance, if cats domesticated themselves in this universe too) but not really conforming to the government expectations of them due to a cat's natural aloofness

hey everyone! i want to first off thank everyone for your support bc it's meant a lot to me throughout this whole shitshow <3 in better news too, for everyone following the last 4 months of my life and how shitty those have been, i've been grinding my butt off over on twitch and i'll be eligible to get paid next month! not an insane amount, by any means, but enough to cover some bills which i'm so excited about because it means things are turning around.

as of right now, shit's still pretty rough and there's no way to get an advanced payout so i'll have to wait until the 12th for that. i've sold pretty much everything i could sell that i own, and i've been doing some odd translation jobs but it just hasn't even remotely come close to something livable for me. i have around 20€ to my name and that's because a friend was kind enough to help me.

First question! What art program I use!

Mostly procreate, along with a handful of brushes! (Specifically the Jing Set and some custom stuff, which is really just a circle brush with the shape changed to a square.)

Second question! How do i draw so much!

Okay so. I am. Ahhah. Unemployed,,,,? No, I do freelance illustration, but hmm. A studio job would be nice.

i graduated college last year and I’m very used to eight hour art shifts. The body sort of remembers to keep working, even though I no longer have storyboards or visdev homework to do.

Also. The hyperfixation is a deep vast tunnel I STILL have not seen the end of the light to, good golly. (I have dreams now about the kids committing shenanigan crimes. I wake up in cold sweat and write them down in a journal. It’s like being the mouthpiece to an angry god.)

So the overall gist is: I was trained to be a storyboard artist with a visdev background, and I’m using that higher education to draw funny muppets because my brain’s funny.

I also DO have a queue, and I’ve been treating this as a sort of inktober project. I am definitely going to slow down soon though! Maybe. Hopefully. Ah… (sheepishly drops my kofi here)

Third question! How do i color!

I. I, uh. I dont know man the coloring demons have a grip on my soul and i just go along for the ride. But also, if it helps, i prefer to limit my pallets to only a few colors at a time. Lighting is king, so if you can figure out if you want to focus on either on your lights or shadows, you’ll have a much easier time composing. That, and symbolic colors— idk, something hits different about art drenched in gold with a tiny hint of a man staring into the blinding horizon, or a green leafy environment with a single dot of artificial red. I also like using blue and purple for shadows, and I’m a big fan of muting colors with only one or two that pop— one of the reasons why I was so attracted to submas in the first place is because from a design aesthetic, they’re both super funny muppet men AND really cool train guys that have a limited pallet and thematic apparel.

This goes out to a BUNCH of people who sent me inbox queries— sorry for not responding, it’s a tad overwhelming because some of them are story questions even I don’t really know will go yet, and others are words of praise and I’m selfish and like scrolling through the inbox to look at them when I feel down. I am more of an artist who sits in the corner and sprouts like a potato rather then a branching vine who socializes, but I really do see people’s responses and they make me go :)))))

Ok you know what I was recently traumatised by The Straights and now I’m back on my “canon doesn’t work if Remus and Sirius are straight” soapbox.

Do you think my straight dude bro RJ Lupin is ashamed of the fact that he was friends with a mass murderer?? He literally tells everyone about it as his Fun Fact. He tells Harry so much about his definitely not homoerotic friendship with both his father and his father’s killer that the poor kid is actually begging him to stop talking forever. (He still doesn’t tell anyone about the Animagus thing though. Just wouldn’t be chill to betray a homie like that.)

And do you think the heterosexual icon Sirius Black is teaming up with a feral orange cat instead of his best buddy?? He’s showing up at Remus’s office like “bruh BRUH, come on you know it wasn’t me. I’m Man’s Best Friend. Pete is a rat. Connect the dots, bro.”

And Remus hugs him so very straightly, not even in a brotherly way, no, this is one of those one-arm, patting the back hugs. And do you know what they decide is the best course of action from here? A dramatic gay murder plot, perhaps? Of course not. They’re going to disguise Sirius as a woman and pretend he’s Remus’s girlfriend.

But of course everyone (Snape) is suspicious, so Remus is like “if this was Sirius Black, would I do this??” And then they start passionately making out and… ah fuck. Couldn’t contain the gay. We’ll try again next year.
