Betty White was working in theater, on radio, and as a model. But with WWII, she shelved her ambitions and joined the American Women's Voluntary Services. Led by Major Charity Adams, the highest-ranking Black woman in the U.S. Army during WWII, the 6888th was the only all-Black women’s battalion sent overseas during the war. Composed of 824 enlisted soldiers and 31 officers from the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), the 6888th was activated in November 1944 due to a scarcity of qualified postal directory personnel in the European Theater and tasked with helping resolve serious postal delays that were harming troop morale. Arriving in Birmingham, England in February 1945, they found warehouses crowded from floor to ceiling with letters and packages. The women of “Six Triple Eight” worked in three rounds of eight-hour shifts all week long, in a building that was not heated and often had rodents searching for goods in packages. Sorting the mail was challenging because so many soldiers had common names, much of the mail had incorrect addresses, and because units were constantly relocating. The 6888th used seven million information cards to stay organized, and their work ethic marveled the community around them. Their goal was further complicated by racism and sexism. For example, a local club run by the American Red Cross hosted Black and white servicemen and white servicewomen but refused to host the women of the 6888th. This prompted Major Adams to lead the unit in a boycott of all segregated Red Cross services. Six Triple Eight also dealt with rumors and hostility from white and black soldiers who were not fond of black women in the Army. The 6888th persevered, processing 65,000 pieces of mail every shift and completing their initial mission in three months rather than the expected six. They were trailblazers of their time and their commander, Major Charity Adams, became the first Black woman to earn the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Something very few people know; Throughout World War I and World War II many Native Americans served as code talkers for the United States Army. These code talkers were from at least fourteen Native Nations including but not limited to the Comanche, Cherokee, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Chippewa, Choctaw, Cree, Crow, Sioux and more. These Soldiers went through basic combat training then developed and memorized a special military code using their language. They created two codes over time; the first code had 26 Navajo terms for each English letter so that words could be spelled and the second code had 211 terms and was later expanded to 411 so that they could translate more words from English to Navajo. In addition, they made a dictionary for military words that did not exist in Navajo. In World War I, the 142d Infantry served in France and utilized a company of Native Americans who spoke 26 different languages and dialects. Of these 26 languages only about 4 could be written. Once WWII began, the Army searched for a new code due to fears that the one from WWI had been studied. The 4th Signal Company of the Army’s 4th Infantry division assigned 16 Comanches as code talkers to transmit and receive messages. Then at Utah Beach at D-Day in France, Iwo Jima was taken in large part due to the Navajo code talkers. Lawrence Brooks (September 12, 1909 – January 5, 2022) was an American veteran of the United States Army and, at one point, the oldest living man in the United States. A supercentenarian from New Orleans, Louisiana, he was the oldest known American World War II veteran. Brooks was drafted into the US Army in 1940, when he was 31. At the time, he had been employed at a sawmill. He was discharged in 1941, after a year of mandatory service, but he rejoined the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the 91st Engineer Battalion in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. He was a soldier in the Pacific Theatre from 1941 to 1945. He reached the rank of Private First Class. Brooks' Engineering Unit was tasked mainly with constructing infrastructure. The Army was segregated during Brooks' service, and he was responsible for assisting white officers with daily tasks. While stationed in Australia, Brooks noted that he was treated better by the white people there than in the United States in the decades before the Civil Rights movement. If you are a sophomore entering your junior year of college, you may have the opportunity to become a lateral entry cadet at ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps). This program allows college students who did not participate in ROTC during their freshman and sophomore years to enter the program as juniors. As a lateral entry cadet, you will undergo a condensed version of the basic training that freshman and sophomore ROTC cadets complete. This training will prepare you for the advanced ROTC curriculum, which focuses on leadership development, tactical skills, and military ethics. One benefit of becoming a lateral entry cadet is that you may be eligible for a two-year scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition and other expenses. Additionally, upon graduation and completion of the ROTC program, you will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve. Guess what; Dr Kathleen Hallisey Rubins is a microbiologist, NASA astronaut and a Major in the US Army Reserve.She became the 60th woman to fly in space when she launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) on July 7, 2016. MAJ Rubins has spent a total of 300 days, 1 hour, and 31 minutes in space which is the fourth most days in space by a U.S female astronaut. She obtained her Ph.D. from Stanford University and, with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr Rubins said she believes becoming a member of the USAR will help her sharpen her leadership skills and enhance her operational sensibility. With the establishment of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in World War II, women entered military service as something other than nurses for the first time. The original concept for the WAAC was to assign women to critical non-combat roles and “free a man to fight.” They were expressly excluded from combat-related duties, and – as the name "auxiliary" implied – were not considered a formal part of the Army. However, the Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall, experimented with allowing women to serve in a limited combat role as range-finder operators with anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) units of the Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) in the Continental United States. With the encouragement of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who promoted an expansion the WAAC's role, Marshall consulted Colonel Edward W. Timberlake, commander of the air defenses of WashingtWAAC DiOveta Culp Hobby. They selected WAAC 3rd Officer (corresponding to the rank of second lieutenant) Elna Hilliard to oversee the experimental program dubbed "Battery X." Eleven WAAC officers and 58 enlisted women were selected and issued cold weather clothing and equipment to allow performing round the clock duty in anti-aircraft dugout emplacements. They received six weeks of training as range-finder instrument operators and learned about the operations and employment of anti-aircraft defenses at a firing range on a sub-post of Fort Miles at Bethany Beach, Delaware. On graduation, they were expected to train other women to eventually replace male range-finder instrument operators at harbor defense installations in the Continental United States. Despite the potential it may have unleashed, the experiment proved short-lived, and remains relatively unknown.
